I have been so overwhelmed with how to begin this process, and I cannot express enough how grateful I am for your video! So clear and well done. Thank you!
Thank you, this has been very helpful. I have more difficulty listening to lectures and picking up on information that way, so having a visual step-by-step guide on this has been really useful!
Thanks Dr Shaw. This was a very useful introduction to using the Nvivo software. I have felt really overwhelmed with starting my analysis but this was helpful and easy to follow. Thank you!
Thank you Dr. Shaw. I using your lesson to figure out my NVivo software and learn the interface to use it in the future for my Independent research papers! Take care!
I have been searching tirelessly to understand the underpinnings of NVivo. I am extremely thankful for the laymen's use of language and demonstration in this video. Excellent efforts! My only recommendation is to remove the pop-up tabs so that we are able to see what you are typing as you type.
I have almost lost my mind trying to understand Nvivo-- each time I created a file and returned all my work was gone-- I have cried and made myself repeat it -after spending hours/days searching I realized it has a version for Mac and one for windows-both are entirely different-- this presentation helps- I didn't see my dissertation taking place if I could not do this part of the paper-thank you for saving my emotional health and taking the crazy part of my days. One big thank you.
I am using your video to help me complete my degree. I'm so grateful for your explanation, I've never actually used this software before. Thank you so much =-)
Super useful tutorial! Thanks a bunch, Dr. Shaw! For removing a child node from a parent node, I've found that instead of right clicking and selecting create as code etc., you can just ctrl + x and then ctrl + v (cut and paste) wherever you want to put the node. Thank you again, this has been a great help!
This video was a helpful re-orientation to qualitative coding using NVivo. I appreciated it. However, I do wish more attention was given to memoing in NVivo. For even first-level processes such as thematic analysis, it will be important to have guiding notes that contextualize what codes mean as well as the relationship between parent and child nodes. You'll also want to just have personal reflections about the codes that might be helpful for the write-up of the data.
Dr. Shaw, this is a very helpful presentation, especially because I've never used NVivo. I'm finishing up my dissertation this spring and summer and am now coding. At the 25:10 mark you show your three themes. How did you list them as your Themes? I suppose you typed them in that way, as Codes/Nodes, and everything else became subordinate to them? I hope my question make sense. Thanks
Hello professor, I have research on well being at work especially the generation of items for the purpose of a scale development. We'll be using interviews and Nvivo to code them. How should we code the data to generate items that could be used as a basis for a quantitative study? We want to compare the items gathered with already existing scales and theory.
Thanks alot DR Alan Shaw for your informative presentation for Nvivo12, I will proceed coding 77 semi-strucutured interviews what is you ponit of view, I guess will give depth for emreged themes and support my grounded theory..Forward to hear your feedback Kindly my you post you (Email) for further question on Nvivo. Many Thankssssss
The images that were placed on top of the windows opened to do actions on Nvivo, actually impede that the viewers can see what it is being done. Would be better to remove them...
Thank you so much for this video, it was really helpful and clear. I just wondered if there is a way to export a document or diagram that shows how you funneled the codes into themes, like a concept map?
Very illuminating and easy to follow. Toward the end, you highlighted text as an example of coded text and said one can build a story. Is there a way to document that storybuilding in NVivo?
I am ending up with way to many Codes for my data. Can you help me with this? I am undertaking a thematic analysis of interviews of football players. My goal is to find patterns between motivation accross different career stages. In essence, the difference in motivation between young, middle-aged, and older football players.
Hi Tumbalam, sorry for the delay in getting back, this Covid thing has been a problem. Anyway, in terms of your question, You should start by choosing a code through an Nvivo method, i.e., make a code that using a word in the transcript. Then you sort and re-code. Finally develop a theme from the re-code. I will try and do a video to explain this in the next few weeks.
Not sure what you mean. Ultimately it will be interpreted you. Let's say you had the following symptoms: Excessive thirst and hunger. Frequent urination (from urinary tract infections or kidney problems) Weight loss or gain. Fatigue. Irritability. Blurred vision. Slow-healing wounds. Nausea. If they were taken from a document of patient data explaining their symptoms, then they could all be placed as a "child" of diabetes (i.e., a subnode). The problem you will have is Blurred vision and Nausea would also be the subnodes of other complications. What you could do is create a list of symptoms in NVivo then give each a code to each associated condition. Now, when you click on that code you would get all the associated symptoms for that condition. This will be a big job! Hope that helps.
Hello. I'm having a major problem with NVivo. I can't make any selections of user Group A and User Group in coding comparison. When I choose, the name section says my computer brand, Dell. That's why I can't get a cappa result. I can't pick any code.Thank you
Hi i have one question 🙋. Can you please tell me How to search 3 words frequency at a time ..... Example: "Cyber physical system" as one word i am trying to search but it is showing me system as different , cyber as different as well physical ...Can you please tell me how to do it "CYBER PHYSICAL SYSTEM" AS ONE WORD ? and for other other words also
Hi Pham, I did a video on this earlier (see ruclips.net/video/IXadOjrca4Q/видео.html ). Just bear in mind that it is not on NVivo 12 and has a slightly different look and feel. All the principles remain the same.
Yes you can, I do this if when I embark on a Netnographic piece of research. The problem you may is, when you click on a node (theme) it will show you what was said but it might be difficult to find out who said it. I call all my documents Participant 1, Participant 2 etc.. so when I click on the node I will see it is from Participant 1 (i.e., it refers to the document). In netnography, the threads are shorter and will have the Username (or handle) which I highlight so I can see who said what. Does that make sense?
Unlike previous version of NVIVO, there is no Analyze tab where we can find "Identify Theme". Word frequency not really giving the result expected. This version does not look smart enough as you are required to do everything manually. Identify themes should be automatic after autocode.
Not sure what you mean. If it relates to needing a licence, then yes, you need a buy a licence. You can get a trial see www.qsrinternational.com/nvivo/trial also if you are a student then your University should have licences that you can use.
I have been so overwhelmed with how to begin this process, and I cannot express enough how grateful I am for your video! So clear and well done. Thank you!
Would like to know, on what applications you are using the tool? @iamcheekyfish
Thank you so much Dr Alan for guiding me this. Clearly I understand the way you present it to us! Thank you so much
Khairunnisa Mag, I would like to know on which area you are using the Nvivo tool?
you're literally perfect for this comprehensive analysis. COVERED EVERYTHING!!
Thank you, this has been very helpful. I have more difficulty listening to lectures and picking up on information that way, so having a visual step-by-step guide on this has been really useful!
Thank you so much, Dr. Shaw. This is incredibly helpful as I complete my thesis research!
Thank you Dr Alan, could not someone to mentor me with the process of coding using NVivo until i search for the RUclips and you made it simple
Thanks Dr Shaw. This was a very useful introduction to using the Nvivo software. I have felt really overwhelmed with starting my analysis but this was helpful and easy to follow. Thank you!

Dr. Shaw, thank you so much for this helpful session.
Great video. This was very helpful in getting started with qualitative data.
I needed a quick refresher on thematic content analysis....my transcripts are ready and the nodes will provide excellent visualization.

Thank you very much, Dr. Shaw. It is a very clear and useful video for a new user like me.
Thankyou Alan. Just starting on this software. I like your overview, helps a beginner to see the various features.

I Would like to know, what areas you are using the Nvivo tool? @MishalDar
Thank-you for the video. Much appreciated. It was very helpful.
Thank you great job on making the complex simple
Thank you. This helped a lot to understand how Nvivo works
Thank you, this has been very helpful.
Thank You so much. Really helpful for my research.
Highly informative and thanks
Very useful and thanks Dr Alan Shaw
@dralanshaw thank you sooooo much. This is literally saving my life now!
Thank you! It can really get me started.
The distorted sound quality makes this useful video difficult to stick with.
Very helpful. Thanks so much.
Thank you. You are a true teacher
Thank you so much for tihis very informative turtorial. I have done the coding and shall now start to put the codes in themas
thanks for sharing, Dr. Shaw.
Really very nice and easy to understand video, thank you
Very informative and concise
I really enjoyed the video, thank you
Thank you so much, very very very helpful!
Very helpful. Thank you!
Very usefull, thank you very much :D
Thanks for your explanation Sir
Thank you! Has really helped me to undertake my Masters dissertation at Leeds
I spent an hour figuring out removing code from a parent as 22:17 .. thanks for this video
thank you very much that was very helpful.

Thank you. It was very useful, but can be very difficult to hear.
thanks prof.
Thank you dear colleague

its a good effort, nothing i would like to mention voice pauses may be reduced and would be much helpful
Thanks for this, how would you go about exporting the transcription with the relevant codes onto Word or another word processing application.

Hello! Can I ask if you ever figured this out Grace? I am wondering the same thing
Fab!
Very illuminating and easy to follow. Toward the end, you highlighted text as an example of coded text and said one can build a story. Is there a way to document that storybuilding in NVivo?
A possible way is to use the Memo facility. I will try and do a video to explain this in the coming week.
The sound, as others have also pointed out, makes it incredibly hard to listen to. Such a shame because this looks very helpful. 😭
I am ending up with way to many Codes for my data. Can you help me with this? I am undertaking a thematic analysis of interviews of football players. My goal is to find patterns between motivation accross different career stages. In essence, the difference in motivation between young, middle-aged, and older football players.
Do we have to manually create core theme of a particular document just like you did for eating , blood levels and symptoms?

I was wondering if one could put together subnodes say of symptom in a way that they would suggest a diagnosis.

Can somebody tell me if Nvivo can import MKV video files?????
Is there anyway to get free access to Nvivo?
Hi i have one question 🙋.
Can you please tell me How to search 3 words frequency at a time ..... Example: "Cyber physical system" as one word i am trying to search but it is showing me system as different , cyber as different as well physical ...Can you please tell me how to do it "CYBER PHYSICAL SYSTEM" AS ONE WORD ? and for other other words also
How about thematic/ content analysis for literature review?
Hi Pham, I did a video on this earlier (see ruclips.net/video/IXadOjrca4Q/видео.html ). Just bear in mind that it is not on NVivo 12 and has a slightly different look and feel. All the principles remain the same.
Please am a student in university now and i want to use nvivo for my analysis but i donot have the money power to get one now please i need help.
How can I give score to nodes based on scale?
Hi Farima, Not really sure what you mean here, can you elaborate?
Can one do collaboration while doing the coding? working in a team digitally?
Can I not just input a whole word document that consists of responses from several participants in one go?
Yes you can, I do this if when I embark on a Netnographic piece of research. The problem you may is, when you click on a node (theme) it will show you what was said but it might be difficult to find out who said it. This is helpful but extremely hard to listen to due all the uhs, which are very disruptive to pay attention.
You are right

The sound quality was bad! :(
Is the 2019 NVivo 12 paid?

That's so weird, I'm doing my interviews on people with type 1 diabetes and ADHD
Good vid, but get a new mic bro
shissh the sound quality is so poor!!
bad audio
Fix your mic
your audio levels are aggressively bad
Too many "uhhs"...go straight to the point. Hard to comprehend your presentation.
