Hey I have a syrian hamster and I have tried giving her childrens play sand but she never seemed too use it. Is there any other way she could clean her coat without hurting my hamster?

It took months to convince my wife to allow our daughter to get a hamster because she's afraid of mice and rats. Penny (the hamster, not my wife), was frightened and bit each of us once, but after lots of positive attention and some time, she's friendly, curious and silly. Now, we'll sit on the couch while Penny crawls around and over us. My wife even gets a kick out of scooping her up and holding her. We had a good friend watch her while we were gone for 2 whole weeks and Penny hid the entire time. As soon as she heard my daughter's voice, she came running out and started climbing the bars full of curiosity. Hamsters make great pets and they do remember you. Good luck. PS - Their bite is like a good hard pinch. Not that bad.
With my first hamster I used to bathe her in water and she had a tiny cage with no sand bath and no enrichment or toys! I fed her a really bad pet store muesli, but I’m so happy that I came across your channel and now my current hamster has a 720sq inches of floor space bin cage with two big sand baths, a 8inch wheel and many toys and hideouts! I use herbs as well, and I I currently looking into getting some more stuff to fit a naturalistic theme. Thanks so much!

I use Tiny Friends Farm and it’s definitely changed. It’s grey now, whereas it used to be sand colour, it’s dusty as hell and made my boys sneeze. I’m using organic ready heated kiddies sand now and it’s a ton cheaper and smells nicer... 🤷🏻♀️😂
Great video! My hamster refuses to bathe with an audience. 😢 In the past, I would put a dish or tub of sand in her habitat, uncovered, and she would only use it as a potty. This time, I put a bendy bridge over it as a cover and she is actually using it as a bath! Still not when I'm watching, but I don't really want people watching me take a bath either! 😏👍 My hamster is a Chinese dwarf.

Idk if this is a joke (it probably is 😂) but if you see your hamster doing backflips please go to a vet or get a larger cage! It’s stress. But that another level of stress. When they get so stressed they get I think it’s mini heart attacks or something so please look for help if so

Ohh I loved this! Honestly I feel like sand is looked at something optional instead of a necessity which I find very sad! Also, thank you for mentioning that those little ceramic hides are too small for sand! A lot of people also use really small bowls, so I'm really happy you brought that up! Another interesting thing that may be note worthy to some is that here in Germany we say that robos should have about 1/3 of their cage be sand as they come from sandy environments and it helps with good well-being. Keep making your great videos as always :)
Thank you so much for this. I've been struggling to find sand that didn't have reviews saying it was dusty. My local Home Depot has a 50 lbs bag of play sand for under $5.00, so I'll definitely be opting for that! Your channel is vital for people like me who want to do the best for their hamsters but are starting from scratch.
I just got my first Syrian hammy (apart from when I had one when I was about 10, but obviously I wasn’t doing any of the care at that age!!) and honestly your videos have helped so much!! I initially bought a typical pet store cage but immediately upgraded to a big enclosure after watching your videos, my hammy is SO happy and has all the digging and enrichment she needs! Thankyou for making the new way of hammy keeping easy!

Thanks so much for this video! My Syrian doesn’t use his sand bath so I did some research and it said that dwarfs are more likely to use them rather than Syrians. After watching this I realized that the pet store sold me tooooo small of a sand bath. Luckily I found this great container so I’m going to transfer to that. Thank you Victoria! I would have given up on sand baths but u really helped!!!

Hello! I have been watching your videos SO much since I got my hamster. He is a little Russian Dwarf, and I named him Dusty. He loves being held and exploring. I have been doing everything that you say, like making him a large bin cage, giving him more bedding, putting the water bottle up with sticky Velcro ( That was a life saver), and now I’m going to make him a nice, large sand bath! I can’t thank you enough for all the valuable information you have given me!
You should put the 3 sands inside of your hamsters cages, and record their reactions. After a few weeks, give them a different brand until they've tried all and whichever had the most positive outcome is their favorite or if you're doing it overall, share the recordings and tell which one won and that could be the most comfortable brand for hamsters. (1. Its ok if you dont do this its a suggestion not a demand, 2. If this doesn't make any sense just tell me and I'll see if i can make it simpler)

Another option for your viewers. I use Carib Sea all natural aquarium sand. Its pretty affordable and also doesn’t need to be sifted or baked. My dwarf loves her baths! I got an oval ceramic dish for her to bathe in and she seems to like it.
I just realized, my friend didn’t treat her hamster correct 😢 it had no sand bath, the cage was very tiny, and they was like a inch of bedding. It had almost no toys and a small wheel. 😢😭😭
Syrians aren’t known for liking sand baths as much as dwarfs but my Syrian LOVES it she spend all night in it! I here her digging in the middle of the night! This video really helped me bc before I was nervous about keeping it in all the time bc my friend told me not to... I just stumbled upon this video today even though it was made a while ago...
Natalia it is definitely not. and she didn’t say it was, chinchilla SAND is but dust is not okay it will cause respiratory problems and will make your hamster sick
Natalia she also said that she doesn’t recommend even the sand because almost all of them are too dusty and will also cause sickness, you should use any other option that she said was good like kids play sand (make sure you heat treat if it isn’t already)

When i first got my hamster,i didn't no anything about hamster. So the pet store employee give me some information which is now i know it is wrong. One of the information the employee did say that i should give my hamster a bath sand ones a WEEK. So after i start to do a lot of research and watch all of your videos its really does help me! And my hamster did live in a habitrail retreat hamster cage and after that i know that it was way to small and now i got a new diy hamster enclosure that my dad build for me! And it is 630sq inches of floorspace. And thank you Victoria! You really help me change my hamster care!❤️
I showed my mum a picture of a hamster and asked if I could maybe get one, she said we'll see, she then showed my dad and he thought it was a rat (the photo was a front view of a hamster) and then my mum asked me if it had a tail, I said "yeah but it's really tiny and fluffy" and then she was like "Oh! That kinda mouse!" *finally she remembered-*

So, some time ago when I was first getting a sand bath I accidentally got dust since I didn’t notice while I was buying it and mistook it for sand. By the time I realised I already placed the dust/powder into the cage and my hamster already dig in it. I’m wondering if there’s any risk of my hamster getting sick or anything. I took out the dust already and I’m thinking about calling an vet just in case. I would just like to know if that’s Necessary or not. Sorry if this comment is kinda awkward I was just wondering so I could know if my hamster could possibly get sick. Ps sorry this is long lol
I found the ideal sand bath for my Syrian hamster Taz I use the bottom half of the carrier he was brought home in and he loves it Only had him a week but I'm learning so much from people like you so many thanks ❤
Amazon is actually more expensive to buy the reptile sand in Canada. I get mine at big als for around $14 and I’ve gotten it on sale at Petsmart for $12
The first hamster I had was when I was seven, I remember my friends asking me why I had a giant hamster inclosure in my room, why there was a container full of sand and me being so shocked they didn’t know about sand baths. 🐹

I think the reason people said tiny friends farm sand is “dusty” or “clumpy” because there was like 40 people on amazon selling tiny friends farm sand on amazon. In my last comment the new ones “got fixed”. It is neither dusty or clumpy. It’s like the children’s play sand. I guess by “dusty” it is a TINY bit of dusty. Not like the chinchilla sand. (Also thanks Tori for replying to my last comment.)
I wish i watched this video before i got Tiny friends farm sand from my pet shop. It is incredibly dusty so i did throw it out after opening!!! Please dont buy it
The recipe used to be so good! About 2 years ago, it was this golden, non dusty sand, but now it’s grey and dusty, very disappointed in Tiny Friends :(

Ok so ive learned that my dearf hamster digs in his sand bath as if hes a big old dog digging to escape his tiny yard....my hamster throws nearly all hia sand out of the sand bath bowl that even has a lid and he just turns his butt towards the opening and digs like mad throwing it all out and at first it was flying onto his wheel so that wasnt good, i moved it on other side, but still this sand isnt cheap and hes throwing it everywhere outside in his substrates and bedding
I use the tiny friends farm sand for my hamsters and it only clumps when they pee in it. U can solve this by just sieving through it every now and then. U can actually buy a really big tub of it if u live in the uk. I find this a really great option.
Hai Victoria! I have a question for you that would be very appreciated if you would take the time to answer it but of course its understandable if you didnt 😁👍. So my dad has this REALLY big bag of just normal sand (that's what he says) and so we washed it 2 times (to take out the dirt), then we sifted it once, baked it with the correct temperature and time and sifted it 3 and a half more times. I wanted to know what you thought and if it is safe for my hamster before I give it to him 😁🐹⛑
Thank you so much for your videos! I’ve got a question, I’ve got a robo who lives in a detolf. Around a 1/4 of her enclosure is sand, I use reptile sand. She spends ages in there digging and running about, however recently she’s started making burrows all around the enclosure and she’s trying to burrow in the sand which made me wonder how deep should the sand be? Because I know robos come from deserts and sandy places, however I know that the sand there is different as it contains more moisture as you go down which enable burrows to be held. She currently has around 2 and a half inches of sand. Should this be made deeper to allow her to dig or is that enough?x
You may not read this comment but I was using children’s play sand and yes the type you showed, yet my hamster was itching itself for probably an hour. Yet, I use natural aspen with some comfy and cozy bedding with no odors and she still bites and chews at herself! I think she may of had mites but she was practically fine until I added the sand then I took it out and she was fine and there were no extra added powder, dust and all of that, (btw she is a short haired Syrian.) I don’t know what the problem is besides thinking she has mites but I’ve never seen her itch so much until I added the sand
Victoria Raechel yeah, i did and it seems to be better but I was just worried the sand carried mites. But she seems fine now, also I pretty much get all the info on your vids cus I was a new owner and I pretty much new nothing, but now I have a 40 gallon breeder tank with food, water, toys, and a running wheel. I might try reptisand to see if it gets better.

Just upgraded my first hamsters cage and finally ordered some sand for him 🥰 at first he was in a terrible small cage as he was a rescue, today I finally splurged, as part of that I've got some bigger bowls for sand baths 🥰

If your cage has bars it’s probably too small. Make sure you have 6+ inches of bedding

Another option for your viewers. I use Carib Sea all natural aquarium sand. Its pretty affordable and also doesn’t need to be sifted or baked. My dwarf loves her baths! I got an oval ceramic dish for her to bathe in and she seems to like it.

I just realized, my friend didn’t treat her hamster correct 😢 it had no sand bath, the cage was very tiny, and they was like a inch of bedding. It had almost no toys and a small wheel. 😢😭😭

Syrians aren’t known for liking sand baths as much as dwarfs but my Syrian LOVES it she spend all night in it! I here her digging in the middle of the night! This video really helped me bc before I was nervous about keeping it in all the time bc my friend told me not to... I just stumbled upon this video today even though it was made a while ago...

Natalia it is definitely not. and she didn’t say it was, chinchilla SAND is but dust is not okay it will cause respiratory problems and will make your hamster sick
Natalia she also said that she doesn’t recommend even the sand because almost all of them are too dusty and will also cause sickness, you should use any other option that she said was good like kids play sand (make sure you heat treat if it isn’t already)
I’m from England and I am sooo happy they do the tiny friends sand at my local petshop, it’s really cheap as well! 🥰

When i first got my hamster,i didn't no anything about hamster. So the pet store employee give me some information which is now i know it is wrong. One of the information the employee did say that i should give my hamster a bath sand ones a WEEK. So after i start to do a lot of research and watch all of your videos its really does help me! And my hamster did live in a habitrail retreat hamster cage and after that i know that it was way to small and now i got a new diy hamster enclosure that my dad build for me! And it is 630sq inches of floorspace. And thank you Victoria! You really help me change my hamster care!❤️

That kinda mouse!" *finally she remembered-*

So, some time ago when I was first getting a sand bath I accidentally got dust since I didn’t notice while I was buying it and mistook it for sand. By the time I realised I already placed the dust/powder into the cage and my hamster already dig in it. I’m wondering if there’s any risk of my hamster getting sick or anything. I took out the dust already and I’m thinking about calling an vet just in case. I would just like to know if that’s Necessary or not. Sorry if this comment is kinda awkward I was just wondering so I could know if my hamster could possibly get sick.

I think the reason people said tiny friends farm sand is “dusty” or “clumpy” because there was like 40 people on amazon selling tiny friends farm sand on amazon. In my last comment the new ones “got fixed”. It is neither dusty or clumpy. It’s like the children’s play sand. I guess by “dusty” it is a TINY bit of dusty. Not like the chinchilla sand. (Also thanks Tori for replying to my last comment.)

Ok so ive learned that my dearf hamster digs in his sand bath as if hes a big old dog digging to escape his tiny yard....my hamster throws nearly all hia sand out of the sand bath bowl that even has a lid and he just turns his butt towards the opening and digs like mad throwing it all out and at first it was flying onto his wheel so that wasnt good, i moved it on other side, but still this sand isnt cheap and hes throwing it everywhere outside in his substrates and bedding
I use the tiny friends farm sand for my hamsters and it only clumps when they pee in it. U can solve this by just sieving through it every now and then. U can actually buy a really big tub of it if u live in the uk. I find this a really great option.
Hai Victoria! I have a question for you that would be very appreciated if you would take the time to answer it but of course its understandable if you didnt 😁👍. So my dad has this REALLY big bag of just normal sand (that's what he says) and so we washed it 2 times (to take out the dirt), then we sifted it once, baked it with the correct temperature and time and sifted it 3 and a half more times. I wanted to know what you thought and if it is safe for my hamster before I give it to him 😁🐹⛑

Thank you so much for your videos! I’ve got a question, I’ve got a robo who lives in a detolf. Around a 1/4 of her enclosure is sand, I use reptile sand. She spends ages in there digging and running about, however recently she’s started making burrows all around the enclosure and she’s trying to burrow in the sand which made me wonder how deep should the sand be? Because I know robos come from deserts and sandy places, however I know that the sand there is different as it contains more moisture as you go down which enable burrows to be held. She currently has around 2 and a half inches of sand. Should this be made deeper to allow her to dig or is that enough?x
I know this is late but you should put the sand in a large, deep container so she can't burrow into it
You may not read this comment but I was using children’s play sand and yes the type you showed, yet my hamster was itching itself for probably an hour. Yet, I use natural aspen with some comfy and cozy bedding with no odors and she still bites and chews at herself! I think she may of had mites but she was practically fine until I added the sand then I took it out and she was fine and there were no extra added powder, dust and all of that, (btw she is a short haired Syrian.) I don’t know what the problem is besides thinking she has mites but I’ve never seen her itch so much until I added the sand
Have you tried removing the sand to see if it stops? Maybe your hamster has sensitive skin.
Victoria Raechel yeah, i did and it seems to be better but I was just worried the sand carried mites. But she seems fine now, also I pretty much get all the info on your vids cus I was a new owner and I pretty much new nothing, but now I have a 40 gallon breeder tank with food, water, toys, and a running wheel. I might try reptisand to see if it gets better.

Just upgraded my first hamsters cage and finally ordered some sand for him 🥰 at first he was in a terrible small cage as he was a rescue, today I finally splurged, as part of that I've got some bigger bowls for sand baths 🥰
Theres now sand from science select! Its very good and my hampster cloey was so happy to get it :)
