Somehow my pyrs have always been able to tell if a strangers motives we good or not. They have occasionally gotten creeped out by a few people and we knew that if the dogs don’t trust someone then we shouldn’t either. Great video!!!
Your right! And they will do it with the least aggression necessary. Most of the time just stepping between their owner and the danger is enough. If the danger accelerates so do they. They are smart and loyal.
Ok, I fell asleep watching dog channels a few nights and woke up to homestead livestock guardian dogs! Probably too old for the energy required, now. But I love these dogs!!! Adorable dogs!
The fencing should be in place before the purchase of the guard dogs. That way they are protected and are able to mark their territory. It would be wise to install an electric wire to the top of the fence to help encourage the dogs to stay in and the predators out. It would also be wise not to not allow people who don’t live at that residence to pet/play with the dogs. They could lose the ability to act accordingly to defend against a unwanted human threat. I wish you well with your homestead and with your dogs.
Reminds me if something I read about cats. They tend to get intrusively in your face when you’re on the phone. Especially if you’re alone in the house. They hear you talking and assume you’re talking to them and assume you want to interact. Maybe your dogs assume the same, that you’re inviting interaction. Beautiful animals!
I’m confused you speak of children and grandchildren...........I thought you and your husband were in your early 30’s and just starting your life in your new career! Please tell us about your family. Yes I’m nosey. I see your dogs have excepted their new brothers . God bless you and your ever expanding family. I love watching the journey of your lives Thank you 🌵✝️🛐👍🏼💕
A friend had a GP on their ranch. NOBODY was allowed on that property when nobody was home so they had to build a special mailbox for the postman to drop packages in over the fence. Another friend found a GP runt (about the size of a tall Golden Retreiver) at the pound and had it trained as a seizure alert dog.
We have 2 GP's . Love these dogs. I will add though , they think of family as their livestock as well as they are very protective. They can sense when something isn't right even as far as people and not just animals. Very loyal family dogs.
I am in VA. I raised Great Pyrs for years and I also had Maremmas. LGD. I got my first one in 1975. Great Pyrs, I found will go on a 20-mile walkabout if they are not busy enough. They are harder to contain. LOL, I have had folks over the mountain 20 miles away call me and ask me if I was missing a dog. My Maremmas were better at staying with the livestock. The Great Pyrs sleep all-day and tour all night. I have watched my Maremmas work together while guarding my sheep and goats. The 2 of them were in the pasture with the sheep and goats. The male, Tony was on the hill overlooking the pasture taking a power nap. Patty Ankle Biter was further down with the sheep and goats. A large dog jumped in the pasture, Tony opened 1 eye and barked didn't even lift his head. Patty Ankle Biter herded the goats and sheep to the far corner and had them in a huddle against the fence. The interloper was just about to go to the sheep and goats when Tony stood up. Tony barked a couple of times then nonchalantly truck down to where the other dog was, just wagging his tail like "Hi, old buddy, old pal whats ya doing?" Then just as calmly walk up to the other dog like he was just going to sniff him, then he grabbed him by the neck and snap that sucker. That dog never knew what happened. Tony dropped the dead dog and trotted back up to the hill barked and Patty Ankle Biter released the animals back to grazing and he laid back down like nothing ever happened. LOL
I've had dogs my whole life, golden retrievers, German shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, mutts, cocker spaniel, border collies. Now I have three great Pyrenees. Never had a better dog. Never had a dog that loved me as much as these great Pyrenees. Don't live on a farm so there's no animals to guard so they guard me, while I'm in bed, while I'm watching TV, while I'm on the toilet. They are either laying at my feet, or at the door facing away towards the direction where anything else could come in. Yes they bark a lot, but they're worth it. Yes they shed a lot, but they're worth it. Investigate the barking and let him know it's okay and they slowly get the idea of what to bark at. Brush them once a week mitigate that hair on the floor. You'll still need a good vacuum cleaner for dog hair, but they're worth it.
Chlorophyll chew bones ( sold at the Mart ), will help doggie breath and are excellent for their teeth and gums. You must keep their mouths in excellent condition for them to be able to do their jobs correctly, not to mention their overall general health. Beautiful animals and a great choice, Mrs. Homestead Heart. 🐾🐾🐾🐾
We have 2 pyrs. I want to tell you GRATZ on making one of the most real, honest & informative pyr vids I have EVER seen on the breed! Thank you so much!
They are handsome beautiful dogs, I just was looking at Chick-a-Woof Ranch they had them same problems with their dogs getting out and roaming so I thought it would be nice for you to to look at what they did hope it help with some good ideas in fencing So proud of you and your husband working together doing things
Hey my sister and brother. Maybe yall should consider getting some birds. I saw one video where these people had guinea hens. They said that they were great to have around also because they let you know when predators are near.
Awww, love seeing Grizz & crew for he reminds me of my Spiritual Grandparents dog, Master, whom we grew up with & rode like a horse when we were little. They are indeed very loyal guard dogs.💜
Our LSGD is a Great Pyr/Anatolian Shepherd cross. This “breed” is a popular cross for many homesteaders, farmers and ranchers here in South Texas. (I cannot speak for other areas of the farming/ranching/homesteading country.) My Special Boyfriend is Maccabe (Mac, Big Mac, Boo, Macaboo, Boo-Boo =0 ) and always, without fail, positions himself close to me. I say, “Any closer and he’ll be among me.” Last week when I returned home after surgery, Boo whimpered then pressed himself so close to me (among?) that Hubbs had to gently ease him back. LOVE my Boo; the old boy is polydactyl (Pyr) but has all the body type, yellow fur and black mask/tail tip of the Anatolian. Calm and gentle, he will not allow the other dogs have a serious dust up, so he is also the Peacekeeper. Wonderful animal. If you ever have the chance to own one, do not think about it more than a nanosecond.
I raised GSDs and love them. If I had a farm I would have these, I have had them in the past when I lived on a farm. They are the very best dogs for a farm you can have, you made an excellent choice.
They're beautiful dogs! I have a Pyr mix.My daughter has his brother. They both adore my grandaughter.Theres no worry about anybody messing with my grandaughter playing in the yard as they stick like glue to that girl.
Grizzly loves you and Taimou seems to be more serious. His facial markings may fade the older he gets. They are among the best LGDs their is. They knew you were faking when you fell on the ground. They said " she faking Bruh, she'll get up" 😂😂
I’m nearly 32 now and have grown up with Great Pyrenees since I was 8 they are by far the most loyal family friendly dog I’ve known that’ll even include your own close friends and guard them like family or livestock. They’re instincts are truly incredible. I might have missed it but is the homestead on social media? I’d love to keep in contact?
My aunt had a farm up the road from mine and had Great Pyrenees to protect her sheep and chickens, I tried to raise chickens 3 different times and kept their enclosures sealed pretty good even with chicken wire on top and within a few months some predator always managed to get in and kill everything....My aunt had a rickety old fence a few feet tall and rarely lost a chicken, those dogs kept the predators out.
Grizzly has that "love me!" paw work on point! I doubt that he'd ever want to hurt you! TaiMou is obviously a big fat love dog! But he's a big dog as well. Capable! Does l'il Jackson boss them yet? My last dog, I knew her forebears to her grandparents--grandmother, half greyhound, half coyote (a lurcher, bred to chase coyote away from sheep); grandfatherS, labrador retriever & German shepherd; mother, that; father, wolf hybrid ("87%). My dog, who I immediately began training the moment I got her, was very gentle with my elderly cat (he bossed her!), followed my voice command off-leash (!) when we saw a raccoon in the park to "Leave it!", gently herded off the street (vs chased or ate) a friends' poultry... She bit two people, one (barely, no skin broken), a stranger guy who startled her & held his hand out in her face. She was scared. On the other occasion, more seriously, a friend's drunken brother suddenly began trying to strangle him. Kaya came out from under a shrub like a white bolt of lightening and got hold of his leg...he was lucky that he had motorcycle boots on, bc even with those he had bruises. He got the h*** out of there and my friend was ok. Unbelievable.
Beautiful dogs, I'm looking into a different breed for when we move to our new homestead. I use to breed Bull Mastiff and I don't wanna do that breed again.
Great video! Thank you for sharing. We have 4 Great Pyrenees. We absolutely love them. Most loyal and protective breed. But they are also very affectionate.
If you are looking for another dog. The Lavonia Humane Society, Ga has one of those dogs. They are beautiful dogs. The shelter says people around here don't fence them in and they usually get hit by a car. It's was at the Hartwell, Ga. shelter and has been transferred to Lavonia shelter for a few months.

I know this is a dog video, but you have some beautiful hair! As women of color, you know we always notice a beautiful crown. And yes, your dogs are absolutely beautiful as well. May the Most High continue to bless you and yours.
I will consider this breed. I saw today a bear from My window four feet away, On my birthday. I appreciate the sight but Now is scary. I have 1 and Half acres property well Maintained, however, my Backyard is a forest. So, I will need to consider a Companion pet dog.
I can not stress enough how much the Great Pry uses his paws. That are slappers lol. Oh and 100lb lapdogs as hers!!!! Beautiful pups :) Lastly the Great Pyr is also known as the Great Disa Pyr. They just patrol everywhere.
We have 2 brothers from different litters and they are as different as night and day. Friendly to a fault but there is a big difference between "Ice" and "Storm". Storm can be aggressive but will relent whereas Ice is a big baby. One looks similar to your Grizzly and the other like a newfie... Our fencing is buried 1 foot down and the entrances to the yards have patio blocks to prevent them from digging. Love your dogs :)
I love this breed and own a few. For some reason when I researched them I was under the impression they dont roam all over. This ended up a HUGE problem for us. Being so large they roamed over the whole area and like to keep tabs on all the neighbor dogs. Neighbor dogs almost never bark now btw. I assume they are terrified of our dogs. One neighbor got animal control to catch them and we had to pay to get them back. That said Ive seen them chase off a mountain lion and also saw the evidence of the coyote they killed. Im worried a sherrif or something will kill them one day, as there was a fire close by once and the sherrif was coming to talk to the people in the area and had his gun drawn even though we had the dogs behind a fence until we can get a fence for the whole yard so we can keep them away from the neighbors. So I agree with "homestead heart" its an amazing and loving and protective breed, but realize you are basically bringing a tame version of the hounds of hell to your place. they will terrify most people if they get to barking and jumping around etc. Might be wise to have them fenced in entirely if you dont want issues with nieghbors because if you look outside and see these guys chasing your kids around even though they are friendly it might scare the living daylights out of them. Im not sure they are a good dog to train either not that this part matters to much to us. We just have them for protection and companionship. I get the impression they make a poor working dog.
We had roaming issues and ended up getting a high priced electric fence from amazon. We have two and it didnt take long for them to figure out no go zones and even when we move the line they hear the beep and understand they have a new territory to guard.
We have 2 GP females. Both spayed. One is a better guard than the other. Random birds are not allowed to land in our yard! The hens are protected. The girls do fight each other pretty bad when they get triggered by stray dogs coming to our fence line. I probably shouldn't have gotten two females, but it's the way it turned out. But they are also cuddle buddies and playmates. For people considering them: They bark all the time. They will escape and wander if property isn't secure. Get them chipped. They bark fiercely at some people who approach and sometimes completely ignore other people....all strangers. They need brushing and grooming. We are in TX and we keep a big fan on them in summer. And they have their own kiddie pool to lay in. They will not protect hens well until they fully mature. Around 18month to 2 years of age. When young they "play" with hens to death. Sweetest dogs ever.
Pyres are the greatest dogs ever!!! Especially if you have land and any kind of live beings. As she said in the video Pyres consider all beings they grow up with part of their pack. Not just other dogs, and they will fiercely protect their pack. It’s amazing honestly because they are so sensitive and gentle. Unlit they need to protect and then they are an unstoppable force. People underestimate how much land they need, if you don’t have a fence they will claim your Neighbor’s land as their own. If you talk to them they should be happy to know you have LGD dogs. If I had cattle and didn’t have my own pyres I would be very happy to know my neighbors did 🙏
Thank you! We run our bird dogs out AWAYS where there could be sheep herds! We don't let them run anywhere near this cause the great pyraneez would kill our dogs protecting their flock!
They are beautiful! I am thinking about them for children? I have heard the are good with little kids for protection? You have cows but what about sheep?
The Pyrenees will patrol the perimeter of your property all day. NOTHING will enter the property that doesn’t belong there. They also love children. They do roam and wander. But will return. Great Great Animal!
Somehow my pyrs have always been able to tell if a strangers motives we good or not. They have occasionally gotten creeped out by a few people and we knew that if the dogs don’t trust someone then we shouldn’t either. Great video!!!
Dogs supposedly can sence things in people we cant so thats a good point there..
Do not be fooled, tho. These dogs love, love, love. But, if they don’t want someone or something near you, they will remove that intruder.
Your right! And they will do it with the least aggression necessary. Most of the time just stepping between their owner and the danger is enough. If the danger accelerates so do they. They are smart and loyal.

Grandchildren???? What? You look WAAAAAAY to young!!! Good living huh? I love your spirit!
Yes..great living and eating healthy is the way to go. She looks amazing.
I have a beautiful Great Pyrenees who stays in the house mostly , he is always loving and watching over me . Best dog ever !!!
I’m confused you speak of children and grandchildren...........I thought you and your husband were in your early 30’s and just starting your life in your new career! Please tell us about your family. Damn!!!!!
They are very Handsome Dogs. Thanks for sharing Have a Great Evening
Love these dogs. They are majestically beautiful!!!! Thank you for introducing them.
Beautiful dogs. 8 months old, wow!
He's beautiful. I'm glad you did research your breed, many don't and end up unhappy with the breed.
That dog really loves you. Hug him and give him lots of loving! I think they bark alot because they hear alot and are very protective and alert!
This is just so adorable. He worships the ground you walk on.
I have a Great Pyrenees and she is the best dog I’ve ever owned! I recommend them for home protection or just a big baby pet! ❤️❤️❤️

they are so cute as puppies! Great choice of breed.
It's always good to do your research

PS: The Pyr paw is killing me lol
Beautiful dogs what do you use for fleas and heartworm? Hope you get a fence soon.💞🐾🐾
I know this is a dog video, but you have some beautiful hair! As women of color, you know we always notice a beautiful crown.
And yes, your dogs are absolutely beautiful as well. May the Most High continue to bless you and yours.
I never laughed so hard in my life‼️that dog just wanted to be up in with you, all in your face and “in your grill.” Oh my gosh too funny. 🤣😂

I saw today a bear from
My window four feet away,
On my birthday. I appreciate the sight but
Now is scary. I have 1 and
Half acres property well
Maintained, however, my
Backyard is a forest. So,
I will need to consider a
Companion pet dog.
Oh My!! Stay safe!!! ❤
He sure loves you!
Yay!! Thank you so much for this! 💕💕
I'll never tire of the Pyr paw. I think it's adorable, most people hate it.

I’m watching this video with our 5.5 month Great Pyr girl at my side. She does that paw thing too.
I love this breed and own a few. For some reason when I researched them I was under the impression they dont roam all over. This ended up a HUGE problem for us. No they are GREAT Pets IF U train them regularly & w discipline
@@davidhumphreys4657 You definitely need to be the boss here. More training.
We had roaming issues and ended up getting a high priced electric fence from amazon. We have two and it didnt take long for them to figure out no go zones and even when we move the line they hear the beep and understand they have a new territory to guard.
Great Pyrenees are awesome. Maremmas are great too.
I know all about that Great Pyr Paw! It ain't no joke!
Awwwe, they love you...
I just lost my Great Pyrenees 😢
They are beautiful so loving. Mine did the same paw pay attention to me thing.
New sub . Thats why they call them The Gentle Giant ! Ive had lots of them before. Used to raise them. Like your channel
These dogs are so sweet. They love sweet potatoes mixed with scrambled eggs.
LOL Grizzly doesn't want you to stop petting him.
For people considering them:
They bark all the time.
If I had cattle and didn’t have my own pyres I would be very happy to know my neighbors did 🙏
love that Pyr paw!
They have such sweet faces.
Beautiful dogs omg 🥰🥰🥰
The Pyrenees will patrol the perimeter of your property all day. NOTHING will enter the property that doesn’t belong there. They also love children. They do roam and wander. But will return. Great Great Animal!
what a lover. Geesh you both are funny
Love your pups!!
