Just a couple of tips for newbies like me.. I started my pile 3 weeks ago, and a couple of more flips and it should be done.. it took longer due to rainy days and not able to flip every 2 days.. so totally expected it to take longer. I did find that I couldn't "kick" the pile with the side of my boot like they say to do, the rake idea worked, but it was a lot more work to use the rake. I used the toe of my boot and kicked in the edges that way, than went around again with the side of my boot and it worked great! When I built the cage to start the pile, I mistakenly bent the fence wire inward and wrapped it around like they said to do, but when it came to taking the wire fencing off the pile to flip it, it was a lot of work to undue the fencing as the compost pile inside the cage, was in the way, so make sure when you join the fencing, leave the ends on the outside of the cage.

"Why not just buy compost at the store" YOU CRACK ME UP. You don't grow it....you don't know it- applies to compost too. Starting a pile this weekend too.
I've done both. Inclosed...and an open one like you show here. This is for the women out there who are gardening without help. In both cases...snakes. Now, the open one like here was close to a ditch. I had a momma water mocasin and her babies. I have a covered one in my raised bed, container garden area and have found harmless, helpful snakes. But, if you are a female this is still intemidating. I don't have a lot of help. Depending on where you live, your zone, and all that...DON'T let it scare you. DO IT. I'm a very scared female and have managed just fine. Although I will say, my neighbor relocated to the ditch the garden snake. I chopped up some of the water moccasin...but, honestly I ran in the end. I created enough havoc that they all left. Next day everything was fine. Don't run ladies. Collect your ovaries and move forward! LOL Compost is AMAZING!!!

I saw another method that is the same procese but using pvc tubes with holes every 14 inches and the tubes separated 14 inches from one and another going from the top to the bottom of the pile and the cage that holdd it in place raped with a tarp and is kept coverd on the top but without covering the pipes, the idea is so that you never have to turn the pile, well maybe just when you start it, for even distribution of the material, thanks for all the education you guys are providing. I live on a wooded half acre in MN and we back up to a 12 acre pond owned by the city. I don’t have a good source for green material other than kitchen scraps and chicken poop. Can I use the “seaweed” that grows in the pond? I’m concerned about heavy metals and other toxins coming off the streets and lawns. Half of the 20 or so home owners around the pond use a lawn service to kill weeds and fertilize. Will I introduce toxins to my compost if I use the pond vegetation? I want the compost for my new food forest and raised beds. Thanks! Oh, I do have a big bag of alfalfa pellets
Greeting from S.A Texas. So glad you mentioned the part of making it too big. I live just on the outskirts of San Antonio, next to Helotes, Tx. Long story short there was a gentlemen that started a pile for mulch, it got as long a a football field....that pile caught fire. It almost if not took a year to put it out, but the smell when the wind blew was horrendous. And it really wasn't a compost pile. The gentleman collected the brush from area developers and grounded into mulch to control erosion on several ranch properties . It's started around 2006 it almost took year or maybe over a year. It was a hot mess( no pun intended ). But I remember the smell that emanated from there. Stay safe and happy holidays.
Perfect timing...we need to get started on our own compost. We need some for THIS year for our new garden and your right ya don’t know what’s in the bags!

You guys are great! I have always gardened with my Child Care / Preschool but this year want to amp it it up. So ordered a hoop house to prolong our growing time (Zone 5 in Iowa) and to compost with them. I was already looking forward to the compost episode 🙌 was not dissapointed! Only thing I am wondering is if it would be possible to water less at the beginning and leave the tarp off. That way you possibly could better airflow and save some water (not really just replace tab with rainwater)
You really need all of that water on the front end to get the microbe party going. The other application we do with the chickens is a lot like what you’re describing. Stay tuned for that!
So I’m down here in Florida and it came to my attention something was eating on you both. What was it? I live in the lowland swamps so here there’s no end to what hungry as far as bugs go. Also I’m definitely doing this for compost. Thanks Guys!

Question for William, can I use dry cow manure and grass cuttings for one layer and then use dry chicken manure and grass for the next layer and so on,or just use one type of manure . I don't have manure and hay bedding right now. I have made compost from just grass cutting and rabbit manure but it took a long time to break down, I like this 18 day method and am above to do my first batch, please let me know what you think about what I'm trying,or if I might be doing it wrong thanks
You don't need to add an activator. You have enough natural bacteria & fungi on your cut grass & animal bedding to get your hot compost going. I did a 50/50 mix of horse manure to oak leaves & that pile was hot for about 3 weeks. I was churning every 3-5 days.
The grass will really get your pile to start generating heat in 48 hours. Also, use a compost thermometer to use as a guide to know when to churn your pile.
My compost efforts were rained out yesterday and today. But I have everything except the cow manure that I still need to collect from my neighbor’s pasture. Too muddy today. Also, the only fence I could find is 36” tall, so I’ll expand the diameter to make a cubic meter, (maybe taller than the fence) is that okay?
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 Starting it today. Got cow manure and leaves for brown, grass and weeds for green. Coffee grounds and eggshells for activators. After I put in the leaves, I’m going to weed whack them to grind up inside the cage. About ready to start filling after I cut some greens. Exciting!

Please tell me more about your all-egg diet for your dogs. I switched my dog over to a Vegi & Nutritional Yeast diet about 8 months ago [She is incredibly healthy]. I currently give her an egg every few days and am interested in what you are feeding your dogs.
We switch them over to eggs and organs about 10 years ago. We did it on the recommendation of a veterinarian and naturopath by the name of Dr. Wallach. We basically use our waste streams (too many eggs along with pig, Cow, sheep and chicken guts) to have them eat like sled dogs. We also throw in fat of some kind. The best part about this doggy diet is that they maintain health and you seldom find dog poop anywhere. It decomposes in days!
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 Right on! Thank you for the info! Agreed on the dog poo, My dog's waste breaks down in days on her Vegi and Nutritional Yeast diet. It makes you wonder what really is in dog food. Eggs are plentiful, so I may start adding more eggs into my dogs diet- thank you again!
Sorry if you already mentioned this but.... I don't have a lot of materials for a pile from my own lot and I'm concerned about getting other people's yard waste. Any suggestions? Does it matter if I get manure from animals that are fed sprayed, and possibly gmo feed? Or if the yard waste was treated with chemical fertelizer and herbicide? @@PermaPasturesFarm21 Right on! Thank you for the info! Agreed on the dog poo, My dog's waste breaks down in days on her Vegi and Nutritional Yeast diet. It makes you wonder what really is in dog food. Eggs are plentiful, so I may start adding more eggs into my dogs diet- thank you again!
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 Do you feed the dogs raw eggs or prepare them some way?
@@steelhorses2004 all raw my friend.
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 raw organs and guts also?
Sorry if you already mentioned this but.... I don't have a lot of materials for a pile from my own lot and I'm concerned about getting other people's yard waste. Any suggestions? Does it matter if I get manure from animals that are fed sprayed, and possibly gmo feed? Or if the yard waste was treated with chemical fertelizer and herbicide? I know not ideal but will it be still better than buying compost?! Thank you!!! 😄
Do I remember correctly that you used Biochar on the first one you did ?
How would you do that ?
Excellent video and explanations!
Thank you my friend!
I'd like to make a hot pile but the only space I have available is in my garage. Could this be done in a garage on a concrete floor?
Probably but I’ve never heard of one being done in a place like that. The temperature might prove to be a concern.
I keep telling my wife don't waste anything in our yard.
It can all be useful!
Do you guys have visitors to you place
What size wire roll is that to start with
I'm just curious what size tarp are you using, for this set up?
I don’t have animals, so no access to animal bedding/ manure. Can you advise please if I can still make my own compost?
Awesome instructions! Should I assume this pile requires a full sun location?
Actually, it doesn’t. You can even build and flip it inside of a building if you’d like!

@@PermaPasturesFarm21 Great news, Thank you! I have no full sun out-of-sight locations on my tiny property, but I do have a shady spot. How do you flip it? Turn the whole thing over (cage and all)? Or fork it into a new cage?
@@adz5bneweng589 see their part two video
@@adz5bneweng589 We sort of answer all of that in our video that came out today.
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 TY. Viewed part 2. Great info. Cannot tell you enough how much I appreciate that you take the time to answer my and other sunscribers' questions!
Good info
Many thanks!
What did you guys use as the activator
@@dariomccollin5617 In this version I believe we used comfrey.
@@PermaPasturesFarm21 ok what others would you normally use if you dont mind me asking
@@dariomccollin5617 The activator isn’t typically needed in this type of compost making. The construction of the pile by itself creates the necessary reaction.

PIMP (I get the acronym and twist) but seriously? A person that exploits and abuses women. Most of the time women that are at a very low point in their life. For a channel that has so much to offer its just unfortunate that someone thinks thats even remotely funny. 😒
I thought the same thing, especially with them raising money to help with the abuse/trafficing. I hope they reconsider.
Thank you!
