Will wait to hear your thoughts on some of the sentiments in this video, especially the idea of not actively driving your knees outwards since you seemingly squat this way yourself (knees 'forward'). I think it's pretty ingrained technical advice so these contrasting thoughts would be an interesting discussion for sure
he’s an incredibly smart guy about weightlifting too, it’s he eat that his english is getting so good so he can articulate all his knowledge to everyone
I watch all of Gabriel's training videos while I train in my garage instead of listening to music and I get a lot out of my training more, thank you sir gabe!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I swear the tension between me and my paycheck trying not to pay for 1 to 1 coaching with you guys is becoming unbearable. Excellent content as always!
Unless you're competing, I don't see why spending a significant amount of money would be worth it. They pump out heaps of good content and it's seemingly only getting better. You'll surely find a majority of general knowledge with online content.
Really amazing insights from Gabriel. I was just recently wondering why a lot of elite weightlifters had that slight bit of valgus on heavy back squats
That’s super interesting. Especially the ratios information. I’m definitely limited by my strength, currently. I’ve been working exclusively on my jerk for 9 months - because of my ruined shoulders, it was catastrophically far behind my clean. Hopefully, when I test it next Thursday, it will finally be at the same weight as my best clean - which is about 87.5% of my best front squat: which lines up perfectly with the 1.16 ratio. My limiting factor is now quad strength - or rather my lack of quad strength! I guess that should be my next focus!
@@getstrongby4038 I’m trying not too! Cheers, dude. I think I’ve made peace with the fact that I’m in my early forties, and not strong, and as such - I’m not likely to get much stronger. I like the movements though, and they are stopping me from physically deteriorating. But, I have always been good at learning movement patterns, and have good mobility, so trying to be an efficient lifter, and working on my ratios, has kind of become my main goal. If I can improve my snatch percentages next year - I’ll be happy. It’s trying tricky because I train at home, and can’t drop the weights. A lot of my work is wasted putting things down safely - that’s harder for me to do with heavy snatches, than it is with the clean and jerk. I’m just going to keep chipping away at it though!
@@nickwysoczanskyj785 no problem have you ever tried gaining weight? Maybe a pure strength phase with some extra calories could push your squat up? I'm terrible at snatching/clean and jerk so I just stick to strength training, I can push press more than I can clean ffs 😆
@@getstrongby4038 I think you’re right. I am gaining weight slowly. I was built like a stick - I’ve gained about 7-8 kg over the last year and a bit. I was chronically underweight. It’s certainly helped. And I’m trying to see if I can gain more. A dedicated hypertrophy and strength block would definitely help. I think that’s my next plan. I figure if I can improve my front squat and strict press numbers - I will likely gain some upwards movement in my C&J. I know that I can squeeze more out of my efficiency in the snatch, as my technique isn’t as good as my C&J; but I definitely need to get stronger if I want to clean and jerk more. I’ll have to start planning out a decent strength phase! 👍
Great video, super interesting information from Gabriel. Judging from the ratio thing, my strength exceeds my c&j & snatch by far, need to work on those! Thanks guys for the amazing video.
Having the knees being more straight forward allows for greater quad utilisation and better stimuli. Having knees pushed out father and wide doesn’t give you the same stimuli, or leg drive While it may not be the absolute best way to squat the most weight, it is what will have the most transfer over the Snatch and C&J.
What does he say about calculating snatch? It sounds like he says take median number between squat, deadlift, and pulls? I think maybe lost in translation or I'm just not getting it.
Snatch max should probably be around half of your max conventional deadlift or 2/3 of your max back squat but since olympic lifters don't focus on maxing at back squats or conventional deadlifts, those are only rough estimates. Gabriel works in close contact with lifters and his knowledge is world class. I guess his numbers were pretty close to those marks when he competed at the Olympics. Great upload, guys!
I could definitely be wrong, but since dorsiflexion requires tibial internal rotation I imagine this could add to some knee valgus. I'm a powerlifter but squat with a narrow stance and feet mostly straight and the only way I can hit depth is by cueing my knees in slightly, altho I dont actually have any visible valgus
Was the calculation he spoke about for snatch the medium of your backsquat, deadlift and snatch pull? Sorry, the audio on my phone is bad and I couldn't hear it clearly.
Great listen. Thanks fellas.

I bought Gabriel's 4 week beginner program and I did the Thursday session today, and it is just such a high quality program.
Very Very Interesting Information!! Thank You Very Much for posting!!🙏⚡️💥🏋️♂️✨😊
Best weightlifting channel rn 👌🏻
Fitz probably in tears when Gabriel said his front squat was good
You know it's not bs when almost every answer starts with "ehhh it depends"
I really enjoyed hearing him use ratio reasoning right out of the Russian manuals.
This is a goldmine

I love listening to these. So many great little tidbits in here.
Solid information!

Thank you. Gabriel has a wealth of knowledge.
Amazing video and interview. Thank you all!
I don’t even squat or do WL anymore but I just freaking love this channel. Thanks for the knowledge.
Gabriel is such a friendly man.
Thank you for having him on! Loved listening to this conversation.
Super informative. Thanks guys!
Holy shit I’m excited to listen to this one, that’s a holy grail notification!

Thanks for making this, great stuff as always
Very nice!!! Good information about the ratio, any way Much appreciation Gabi , u will remain a history… good luck
That was very informative. Thank you!
Great info!
This was amazing advice. Thanks so much lads *said in my fake Irish accent*
great video. not a weightlifter but always down for more Squat tips
Thank you, very interesting.
So what’s your view on his first statement on knees slightly in getting out of the hole?
Having the knees being more straight forward allows for greater quad utilisation and better stimuli. Having knees pushed out father and wide doesn’t give you the same stimuli, or leg drive

I’m one of those online athletes in one of his programs 👋
Very interesting.
Shouldn't Olympic lifters be doing front squats?
Boys you forgot to link to Gabriel's website
‚Yeah nah I’m not tight when I squat‘ 😂
This might sound weird how I notice this, but his weightlifting grunt sounds exactly like Lu Xiaojun lmao

What was the method to work out snatch weight around 13:00? I couldn't get it
Still don’t know… average out of squat, deadlift and pulls? Doesn’t make sense
@@Cafaura that's a big fn snatch
@@user-dd7pq2to3o a comment down below said it’s 50% of your average of your squats, deadlifts and pulls

I can't snatch or clean 50% of my squat 😤
@@skmotorcycles8123 much better than me, I can squat 175 but can't even clean 100

Apparently you take 50% of your average backsquat deadlit and pull, that's what I understood
@@weightedsumwl oh awesome thankyou. That makes more sense lol. My interpretation had me at a 138kg Snatch! I wish!
@@jsuewrs135 lol, I guess you just need to work on technique then, bc you are already devilish strong
I thought he said pulls* is as in both snatch and clean pull but idk if that sounds less likely
