Guts is the same kind of role model a really troubled dad is. He's got PTSD beyond moral comprehension, he was SA'd as a child, and was a child solider. This man has literally been broken since day 1. However like a very troubled father, he's grown for those he loves, for his family. I'd say Guts is one of the most real protagonist in all of fiction, on the same grounding of Shinji from NGE.

Like most characters, you can take and admire the good things they bring and discard the bad. Almost all Berserk fans are inspired by Guts perseverance, resiliency, and tenacity he shows when dealing with any kind of conflict in the manga. We don’t like it when he’s cold and disregards others for the sake of his own goal, however he has long moved on from those days. With that being said, Guts is without a doubt a role model, anyone who reads berserk can definitely feel motivated from his ability to adapt and overcome his trauma, adversity and problems he faces.

You don’t discard the bad. You understand the bad. You understand the character’s journey, and when you do wrong, you learn how the role model came to the crossroads and why he choose the wrong path. Understanding the bad is almost as important as admiring the good.

The Beast of Darkness specifically is something I've used as motivation. The absolute worst thing Guts could become, a being lacking humanity who's only goal is murder, mayhem, and misery, is inherently human. We all have that dark side that preys on our insecurities like a dog for scraps, waiting for the slightest advantage to rip us off of the proper path. Guts' drive to beat the beast back, understanding that although it claims to know him, it isn't him.
The worst aspects of ourselves, can be beaten with something far larger than a slab of raw iron, and that's our humanity.

I was addicted to drugs from the time I was 19 until 30.. I'm 32 now and I'm going on 2 years clean. After I had quit I had no trust in anyone, I had to completely change who I spoke to and was super picky about who I would let be around me. I also went countless nights without sleep and it nearly drove me insane..wanting to sleep but not being able to because I was fighting demons by myself all night when I didn't have money or couldn't get anything. Feeling sick, depressed, driving out and losing everyone that was ever important to me because i was constantly giving in to my own beast of darkness. That was my abyss..and that was my armor that kept me going through everyday. Even tho behind my armor I was bleeding and wanting to die...I still got up everyday and kept going knowing the odds were against me.
k.m. made it so easy to relate to guts, anyone can apply this to any personal struggle they are going through themselves, so then it stops being just a story and starts being a struggle you feel like you've lived through with him .I will forever love this manga for all the happy , sad, Angry and inspiring tears it's brought me. As fantastical as it is, it's about as close you'll get to a real life story 🖤

At this point in his journey yes. Guts has reached a point of maturity in his journey. He's mostly worked through his worst character traits. This might be an odd comparison however Zuko's journey in Avatar somewhat reminds me of Guts at least on a thematic level. Zuko starts out obsessed with a single goal to his own detriment who over time is able to mature and come to terms with himself.

I'm gonna have to say yeah, he's a decent role model. Sure he fucks up, but he learns from it. Once he has a goal, no matter how big or small, he doesn't give up on it. He's a very human character that's constantly changing. The only thing consistent in life is change, and he kind of embraces that fact. He tries his best no matter what, and will/has gone to the ends of the Earth for his loved ones. Sure one could say all kinds of negative things about him, but to me, the positives far out weigh the negatives.

Guts is a hero to me. I've told my own story on this channel enough times to piss people off, so I won't get into the details. But Guts is a realistic hero because he is not perfect. He is not the strongest character in the story. He is not pure of heart and has done some truly despicable things. But he has also come back from the darkness in such a way that very few people have. I find inspiration in this because I once saw my own trauma as a brand that marked me as unable to connect with others beyond what my autism prevented me from doing.
But I have kept moving forward and felt less isolated in part due to the story that I have seen Guts live through. He has survived so much of the same kinds of violence and accessible human evils that I have that the experience does not leave me feeling that I am unworthy of human connection nor that I am incapable of it. Guts is someone who keeps pushing through and finding that despite what he has done and what he has survived that he is able to pull himself out from the darkness and surround himself with friends that help to keep him rooted in what is left of his humanity.
Hope is not a bright and shining emotion. It is a very somber feeling that we turn to when nothing else exists. And out of all of the hellish experiences I have endured, the absence of hope is the worst thing I have ever felt because when you lose hope, you begin to shut down and lose the connections that you have. Despair rusts and corrodes that foundation until you sink below into the darkness, losing yourself to the beast within. No person is a monolith. Not even Guts.
All in all, I owe my life, my sanity, and even my relationship to having known the hero that is Guts through the hellish story of Berserk. From a single piece of art 23 years ago to thirty years old next month, Berserk has made its place in my life as a source of inspiration and hope since I was seven years old. It opened my mind, my heart, and helped me to cease my self-destructive ways before I lost more of myself than just some tissue in my right knee. I could be so much worse off than needing a cane to walk if I hadn't embraced the lessons of this story.

Not all role models have to be squeaky clean. Most of our old idols are being torn down for being flawed more than actually doing anything wrong. However sometimes heroes that used to be villains can be great heroes because they overcame something and chose to be a better person. Darth Vader did unspeakably evil things yet he was redeemed in the end. The goodness in him over came the bad. We all have some bad in us, being able to overcome it has as much merit as being always clean.

I have bipolar disorder. That means that, when left unchecked, I have an unbelievable temper. Seeing Guts battle with his inner demons to try and overcome the innate darkness within him is something that I personally resonate with. His lack of blood family, his distrust of people, his love for his friends are all things that I relate to greatly. Sure maybe the dude does some questionable things, but overall I think he's a human with flaws who struggles, but continues. That's inspiring to me.

  • @rupertkhan2

For me, Guts is the embodiment of resilience and loneliness. It is an extremely complex character (as seen on his evolution), but is still an incomplete character. He is strong, physically, but he has had to learn to become emotionally and psychologically strong, to accept it's ok to depend on others, to trust. Yet, his path is one of loneliness and emptiness. I would like to say Casca could be the response to his destiny or mission in this world. But I don't think that will be the case. I really hope to continue seeing this marvelous character evolution, I don't think I have seen a similar one in any other media.

At the beginning of the series, I would say he definitely isn’t, but Guts grew to be a great role model. He honestly grew to be what every man should aspire to be. He’s physically and mentally strong, he’s kind to those who are weaker than him and offers wisdom to those younger than him who need it, Schierke and Isidro, he’s grateful to his friends who’s help was indispensable in journey, Farnese and Serpico, and no matter what struggles he faces he never complains, he just faces the danger head on and never cowers in sight of it.

I think the role model aspect of Guts is often misunderstood or rather oversimplified as "just keep struggling," when thats really not the case is it? If guts simply "kept struggling," he would have long ago given in to his beast of darkness. Black Swordsman guts was really simply Griffith in regards to his ambition; one that was purely self centered where Guts at the very least wished to appear like Griffith in that he had an uncompromising desire that he would quench no matter the expense. With Casca though during the conviction arc that changed (or rather went back to that which it was during the Golden age when he first became vulnerable with her), he no longer fought for simply himself but others as well, allowing himself to open up to others and realize that happiness and being content is more important than egoist aspirations. That to me is the lesson of guts' story - growth not for purely selfish motivation, flying higher like a hawk alone at the top so to speak but to find inner peace through companionship amongst fellows.

Honestly cracks in the blade explains guts to a tee, godo got down to the depths of guts as a character. When donovan did what he did it broke him as a kid he expressed this by achieving great things on the battlefield while pushing everyone away, it wasn't till he met griffith till he found meaning in his mission in life. Then we find out trauma also from Gambino when him and casca make love. He at first from what happened with donovan that sex was an act of aggression and anger and almost hurt casca, then he looked at her and saw himself. That's when he started crying and talking about gambino saying how he sold him he fights with the fact that gambino and his wife saved him from certain death under that hanging tree and raised him. To Gambino treating him like garbage and selling him to donovan. Most kids feel this way when they get older they are conflicted because they don't know whether to see someone that hurt them as children as good people or monsters. He then found a family with the hawks to leaving because family scares him he pushes things away when it feels good because he expects them to hurt him like donovan and Gambino did. Luckily I believe until griffith showed up when he was in elfheim he looked truly at peace, even showing affection to moonlight boy before he was revealed to be Griffith.

I think guts is a role model. He’s a very solid character with a lot of things to look up to, such as his drive to keep moving and his way of struggling rather than giving up. Just look at many of his quotes and his great traits shine. I personally find his willpower very inspiring and he is a character I look up to in many ways.
Yes, he has imperfections and some bad qualities, but who doesn’t? His imperfections are part of him and even those are something readers can learn from. You can learn from a man’s mistakes just as much as from his success. Guts’ ways of disregarding others and their feelings (moreso early on after the eclipse out of anger) is something you shouldn’t do bc it will lead you into darkness, and guts’ entire arc of becoming the current stage guts is a journey of development that is very admirable. He slowly becomes a better man and grows as a person through trial and tribulations that are relatable in a way to many as well as many that are not. He repents for his past mistakes and now does all he can to be a better man. That’s pretty badass.

Is he a role model? Nope, his story is usually like a cautionary tale as it’s usually about how his mistakes affect him and the people around him. The most profound messages come from Gut’s learning from his mistake. He’s a great example of will power but where he channels his will and energy is usually where he falters.

He’s definitely a role model. He easily could have been a dick and just dropped Casca when he realized she wasn’t the same person after the eclipse (while in her childlike state). He also could easily have ditched everyone else while they were sleeping, at any point during their travels, to seek revenge on Griffith. He stands up for them, and with them, instead. His determination to fight through all the demons coming after them, rather than giving up, is exactly what we should strive for. Never give up! Never surrender! 🤘😎

Berserk has the most powerful imagery i have ever seen. That still with Guts looking back at Casca in the midst of his whirlwind of violence to save her in the heretic's cave is unreal. Sends chills down my spine and makes me want to hug my wife and annihilate a demon

It's not about power he's just so familiar, this anger building up within just what I have stumbled upon, for pretty not exact same but still well enough pain, which is foundation for bad thoughts trying to take me down, questioning me am I the only monster here. The only difference that I wasn't killing anyone.

hes more inspirational more then any other mc due to his black swordsman arc, doing horrible things to combat horrible circumstances, and throughout the story you see him go from the black swordsman of revenge to someone whos priority is to keep casca safe and protecting those around him, changing and maturing throughout his journey

If guts was smart he would avoid Griffith and never come back so he could never go through the eclipse I’d let old caska hit the streets and face the eclipse by herself old dumbbell turned her back on him so she can die that’s how I’d view it in guts shoes why face that fate over someone who doesn’t care about you wanting to please Griffith didn’t know who she wanted to win in the sword fight when gut left I think she did want a romantic relationship but Griffith didn’t show the feelings back and the feelings faded

I see Guts as a role model, because I see Guts as a character that "grows".
He is an embodiment of masculinity in this era where people are questioning its nature, altering it or not recognize it.
All struggles of those and worse are what Guts has already faced and moves on to a future, where he provides for his loved ones.
