I also noticed how she changes thru the song. First, she feels responsible for her father and sympathizes with him since her mom left them both because he was a drunk who wasn’t working. Then when she has kids and her partner is an unemployed drunk…she is seeing life from her mother’s side and tells her partner to leave…but she doesn’t leave her kids

I was an 18 year old metalhead guy when this came out. I felt her desperation to get out of her situation. I felt that same desperation. It made me cry then and now at 52, with a wife, grown kids, money in the bank and 3000 miles from where i started it still makes me cry. Im no longer in that position but i can still connect to moment though this song. I will always love this.

Many of the greatest songs are about longing, yearning, nostalgia, about the fragility of life and everything a lifetime has to give.
These songs open the heart and go the deepest..

I was listening to this song in my car on the way home crying. Good music is about emotion, good and bad. One of the all time best songs.

This video helped me reach an epiphany. I LOVE me some Tracy Chapman but I never did like this song. Always took it to be on the eerie side. But it was and still is *everywhere* - I know every word and every riff. I'm not much of a guitarist but I can sure play THIS song. So watching and listening to this video, the more I hear these interpretations of the lyrics and accompanying melodies, chords etc. the more entranced I'm becoming with the song than I ever have been before. Mid-way through the video, I paused it and sang a line from the bridge and started to cry right as I got the to "feeling that I could be someone...be someone.....be someone" line. All this time, the reason I never liked it is because of how it reminds me -the optimist-turned-defeatist vibe of it moreso than any specific scenario in the lyrics- of my own damn life. Sorry for rambling. Thanks for listening. Stay determined everyone

I'VE HEARD THIS SONG COUNTLESS TIMES (TOP 5 FAVORITE SONGS) & STILL OVERLOOKED SO MANY OF THESE THINGS EXPLAINED INCLUDING TRACY BEING PREGNANT & WANTING TO ESCAPE THE HUSTLE & BUSSLE TO MOVE TO THE SUBURBS.
ALSO HOW THE START OF THE SONG WAS HER OPTIMISM OF THE FUTURE & AT THE END HER DEFEATIST ATTITUDE BY SINGING "I GOT NO PLANS, I AIN'T GOING NOWHERE / SO TAKE YOUR FAST CAR & KEEP ON DRIVING", & THE HALF VERSE AT THE END WHERE SHE CHANGES THE " *WE* " IN "WE GOT A FAST CAR" TO " *YOU* " GOT A FAST CAR, THEN *YOU* "GOTTA MAKE A DECISION". WOW. BRAVO SIR!

Thanks for a great video. I love music but don't understand it from a technical perspective. Your breaking down of the basic elements of the song and they interact to elicit emotion is very thoughtful, insightful and helpful, allowing me to understand it in a multifaceted way.
I very much agree with your interpretation. Chapman once said that this song : "... basically it’s about a relationship that doesn’t work out because it’s starting from a wrong place.” This makes sense, as the protagonist is so consumed by desperation and a need to escape her present reality that she latches onto a dream. She continues to hold onto that dream until she realizes that no matter her position in life, her partner is not who she thought he was. He himself is lost and unable to be a husband and father. A poignant story, and unfortunately, not an uncommon one.

The idea that he has a fast car is a nice bit of character development not to mention foreshadowing. It suggests his bad boy-ness is what attracted her to him in the first place but then she had dreams they could settle down and forge a more stable life. Brilliant song and brilliant lesson. Thank you.
