I used to go to school in this district from K-3 (2003-2007). I was at Tara Oaks. That elementary school was a militaristic, abusive environment. Classes walked through the halls in separate lines for boys and girls, with designated "line leaders", and the teacher at the front. Students had to place their index finger over their lips while walking through the halls to remind them that there was no talking in the halls. One year had a dress code requiring boys to tuck in their shirts, and I was made fun of when I was the only person that followed that policy. Gym teachers were unforgiving and strict, with things like strenuous warm-ups and students having to do laps around the gym in alphabetical order of their classes (so I was stuck running in front of a bully that was purposely stepping on the backs of my shoes). I was scolded in front of everyone for accidentally getting started on an activity while the teacher was still explaining, and was then not allowed to move onto the next activity. Students in music class were treated badly, such as when students were disallowed to play an instrument after they were picked just because they accidentally stepped over a xylophone on the floor instead of walking around it. One of my teachers (who is still there) denied that I was being bullied and would not make the class be inclusive to me (I'm on the autism spectrum). This teacher would not allow anyone to go to the nurse for legitimate reasons, resulting in me throwing up on the cafeteria floor in front of my classmates (after the teacher told me to throw up in the restroom instead of allowing me to go to the nurse). On another occasion, this teacher threatened to call my mom and tell her that I wasn't doing my school work because I wanted to go to the nurse instead. The school had a contest over which class could behave the best during lunch and would get a sticker for each day that the class was deemed well-behaved by the cafeteria staff. I accidentally caused my class to not receive a good rating on one day because I was talking to someone and I did not notice that the table had been called to attention for dismissal, and everyone was mad at me. I heard that the new principal who was there after I left was even more militaristic and made a policy disallowing students to talk during the first ten minutes of lunch. The school district that I spent 4-12 in had its own problems but Tara Oaks was an abusive place. The entire school district might have been like it, who knows.
Drew Collier My school was very similar to this. We had the same policies and also couldn’t talk during lunch. Most teachers were bullies to the students. My assistant principal abused his powers in the school and often forced kids to do things that were certainty illegal. It’s sad the school systems are failing us.
The other school district I went to had hazing issues in their secondary schools. Middle schoolers weren't allowed to use their lockers between most periods (but also weren't allowed to wear backpacks), so they had to carry a ton of stuff at once with just their hands. The high school didn't have enough time between classes for students to use their lockers so people got back problems from carrying all of their textbooks in their backpack. I later found evidence that it was because this high school never increased the amount of time between classes when they switched into their current huge building a couple DECADES ago. I brought this stuff to that district's school board but they unanimously covered it up and changed the wording of their hazing law instead of fixing anything. Yeah, school systems have problems.
