- Ten years since fighting started in Afghanistan, British Army soldiers have been transformed as almost every piece of equipment has been replaced or upgraded to cope with the conflict. Now, desert boots replace jungle boots and the new multi-terrain pattern is designed to blend into almost any background. Much of the new kit has come in as urgent operational requirements and that means it faces an uncertain future beyond Afghanistan.

The new camo saves your life, the old camo doesn't. Good enough reason for me.
Good to see ur boys finally recieving the right kit to get the job done, for so many years British Troops where expected to "Soldier On "using sub standard equiptment or expected to but thier own "Gucci" Kit lol,we seem to have come along way since the Northern Ireland and Iraq days
The head cam you see is just a night vision goggle.
No camera, lol.
Much love and respect with salute is giving to all the British Army.
catterick is giving recruits PCS (mtp) its good kit despite what anyone says. it works well but the smocks are cheap and ive broke the zips a few times on ex. the pattern works well in woodblocks aswell as urban and sandy environments. if you havent used it, dont slag it off its good kit
20 years .... woah
I believe the sight is an Elcan Spectre DR. (1/4x). Also now used by US special forces.
I feel yours too man.
The rail is so you can stick stuff like flash lights on so when you are going into a compound from the sun, the compound has no windows and no lights so its pretty dark. Also stick or laser target lights that you can see through you night optics :)
The plates on the ECBA plate carrier are way too small
Using civilian designations. Conventional US forces use the ACOG TA31RCO models. SOCOM units have acess to the ELCAN SpectreDR, which can flip between 1 and 4 power magnification.
The UK MoD initial trialled, the Elcan SpecterDR but due to cost and weight contraints opted for the Elcan SpecterOS which is a fixed X4 optic. The use of the ACOGs by the UK MoD was always a stop gap measure until a replacement for the SUSAT could be found.
I'd still rather have my old SLR with a S.U.I.T. sight. They never let you down! And a good old 7.62mm high velocity round had withering hitting abilities.
I loved the SLR, never let me down.
Snap.
@Irish16King Those aren't headcams, they're NVGs (night vision goggles). They're attached to the helmets so that they can flip down at will for night combat.
Transition to multicam, plate carriers, L85s A2s with rail, bipod grip, flashlight, scope/rds, nvg mounts. Very nice to see that the British Army compensated for CQB warfare and night warfare.
Not Multicam
Such a big change
its not an a3, it's an a2 just with railing and different sights
The old SUIT scope on the L1A1 had the German point inverted.I am puzzled on how you guys used it?Im used to using the M21 using standard cross hairs or the M24 with Mil Dots.I want to know?
Problem is all this new kit was locked in the Stores untill the very last mi Ute and we were made to use the older kit, OP Herrick 11 and we were sharing kit because there wasn't enough or they head sheds didn't want to give it out.
Heck yeah, the one good thing that's come out of this war is a 10 year field-test environment to hone the training, soldiers, equipment, and tactics of the nato armed forces, in particular the U.S., U.K. Canada, etc putting us a few steps ahead of the russians/chinese/indians etc
I’m actually looking to join the army infantry, hopefully joining next year
@@kyleham4330 thanks I still need it
@@kyleham4330 what part are you hoping to join?
@@kyleham4330 army infantry, good luck with your exam it’s a hard one
@Irish16King cams? Are you talking about the night vision monocle?
lucky you, dont know when RM cadets are gettin it! some of yours already have!
Google "Multicam UBACS".
Incorrect. It said "Csgt Jed Owens RM" suggesting he's RM, he has the RMC flash on his arm whereas AACC guys wear one that says "Army Commando" or "Royal Navy Commando" respectively, and he also has an RM capbadge... if you do AACC you keep your capbadge but put it on the beret.
This guy is 100% Royal Marines Commando, bootie through and through.
Those are night vision devices. The Brits are looking pretty sharp, here.
“Uploaded 9 years ago”
The ELCAN sight has been brought in for the FIST programme, 35000 sets are to be ordered, to replace the aging SUSAT also new thermal and nightvision sights, new radios and possibly a new grenade launcher. I wish this kit could be spread cross our entire infantry but I dout that..
so magpul makin some cash on loading out all those kits with mags holy sheet haha
Some Twaddle here . It is not illegal to own any form of military kit the UK past or present . except of course weapons .
just pointing out, it's not only the army whos kit has changed
Sorry but your wrong. Yes the SA80 has been in use for 20 years or so but that was the A1 not the upgraded A2. I think you have got mixed up.
Just imagine using the original osprey + A1
Those head cams, are those the cams that record the battle fottage that you can see on youtube or are those cams personal ones of the soldiers?
No they are night sites
@Irish16King yes they are
lol , old ged owens. sprog marine in Bravo back in 97. good to see he has done well for himself
Great to see the I.T.D.U. getting a mention..
Wasn't the A2 already in use by the start of Afghan?
No not in full use some regiments had but most did not how ever some regiments had upgrade kits given to the then they were later issued new weapons
ill buy my own plate carrier still, however weve gone on leaps and bounds, the americans were spot on to adopt the plate carrier with molle attachments :)
That MTP works well in a gravel pit.
Yeah Multicam N' MTP sucks too
@@AntzolY111 Had to dye some mtp trousers green to get them to fit in with the local environment.
I live in North Yorkshire.
cant wait for the new multicam uniform to be issued to the ACF..
This was 10 years ago. Not much had changed.
nice to see some change. I would have liked more on the boots. as I was told, the first issues back then were terrible.
by the way, what's up with the A3 upgrade to the SA80?
Long story short, the A3 is HK's improvements to the original SA80 line of guns. In iraq, british soilders reported that stoppages were common, and sent it to the councils for further investigation. The british hired HK to "redesighn" the rifle. They ended up replacing everything execpt the bolt I think. The reason for these flaws was Enfield's quality control, not the desighn. The SA80 had a legacy of being rather crude and not of high quality, due to Enfield's lack of proper management during manufacturing.
@@userhome4588 that was the A2 buddy. The A3 is a further refinement of the A2 which came into service a couple of years ago
why do the news and press refer to the entire armed forces as "Army"? what happened to the Royal Navy, RAF and Royal Marines? they could at least say armed forces
What's the name of that new sight at 1:06 is it going to replace the ACOG ?
8 years to late but it’s an Elcan spector
@@gooseman7522 better late than never haha, however I’ve since used it now :)
The defence industry is the same as any industry in that products are constantly being developed. All this new kit, that they have bought now, will be outdated in a year because of enhancements made by competing companies. Unfortunately the cost to constantly upgrade kit every time something new arrives is just too high. Thats why we've had to wait for upgrades. I was in Afghan in '07 and the kit now is so much better than we had, but that's life when you don't have an endless supply of funding.
A massive change since i joined in 1983...lol..
they always say you had it tougher it back then.
1:30 EMAG :D
Where do they put the pld magazine when they reload ? Please respond
My brother used to put the empty in his pocket then after the engagement back into his pouches
They have a small ‘drop bag’ attached to them.
Its the Specter OS 4X . Only 4x magnification.. The 1-4 proved no better and in some ways worse than just a 4x with Sheild red dot ontop. With the DR the differant zeroing between the two, so you either have good zero at 4x or good zero on 1x.
Luckily the sight is not UOR and will be permanent replacement for the gash SUSAT. The ACOGs where SUSAT.
Do you prefer the elcan os4x over any of the acogs? In Canada that elcan isn't that expensive
Because they were about 150 years apart, that's why
ive got it :p
you can get many copies/similar variants but you'll not get an exact British army one...or at least you shouldn't. I've only just been issued the stuff myself like 3 months ago.
I'm sure the US are still using the trijicon 4x32 then again i may be wrong
Well to get Technical, Its a slightly different camoflage to the US Multicam. Its the British version called 'Multi Terrain Pattern' and It's illegal For Civilians to own at this point in time.
Bizarre. Here in Oz we can own the current multicam but we cannot have airsoft. Meanwhile in the UK, the reverse is true
I would rather have the airsoft and use any old camo 😎
pwnd him
US Army has officially dumped the UCP pattern and all US Army uniforms are to be changed to Multicam (June 2012 update)
it has since bean decided to ship all the vehicles back to the UK in 2013/ 2014 and thay will all be upgraded with new armer better for anti tank war fair because the MOD thinks that the wars the uk will be fighting will involve mines and tanks so thay are keeping some anti tank vichales and some mine resident vichales but most will be combined to do the same joe by adding more equipment adding more weapons ect have a look at the MOD's "after afghan" plan
From a Product Design aspect its rele cool to see the Difference, and Makes you think why weren't the Products Designed Right First Day ?
Can't help but think the old kit looks a bit goofy. Not that it matters in war.
Suitable in the Iraqi desert.
British army best in world 🏴👍😄
old uniforms look dopey
Why do sportsmen get the "top tech" when soldiers get poor kit and kit in poor conditions in Afghanistan? Is it more important to entertain or to keep the peace and stem the tide of terrorism? Bottom line: Spend some of the money spent in sport on the military instead, it helps keep the boys alive. Don't care if Man City can't buy players, I care if soldiers lose their lives.
but the thing is there is not enough money to go around to spend on all this kit.
@@name5798 Cheers for the reply. I've served a few years in the forces since then and have dropped the naiveté!
It's a simple generalization that is reasonably accurate in its summary i suppose. I know your comment is old, but meh.
The old camo was sort-of goodguys, the new camo is sort-of badguys.

I'd assume this has to do with the fact that the US Military has an infinitely larger budget to invest in their troops than any other Nation on the Planet. In fact, I believe that even if every other Nation on the Planet were to combine their Military expenditure, the US would still trump this figure 2:1.
It wasn't 10 years ago the fighting started, it was ages ago . . . The First Anglo-Afghan War was fought between British India and Afghanistan from 1839 to 1842, which resulted in the deaths of 4,500 British soldiers and 12,000 of their camp followers by the warring Afghan tribal fighters. You can say "oh, that was a different war" but it wasn't, was it? It was Brits against Afghans, like today . . . . 172 years since the fighting started, why not say so .?
Current conflict. 😒
How much is "enough" to spend on the military?
sad to say British Army soldiers are still out class to U.S Army soldiers but i never trad them for the world to have them in my fox hole we all fight to bitter end
That old helmet lol
@ginjaninja1988 I'm pretty sure he is an Army Commando. A soldier who has undergone the All Arms Commando Course.
I prefer a tried and trusted model called an AR15 chambered in wtfIchoose ammo with over10k mods, addons and barrel sizes typical British gov trying to reinvent the wheel as someone is getting a backhander!

We learned nothing
War is rich old men protecting their wealth by sending lower and middle-class young men off to die

Sorry but can't let this go without saying something. If you knew anything about history - you know actually picked up a book and read it - you would know that realistically WW1 and WW2 were one and the same war, look at the social, economic and political situation in Germany in 1919 as the troops marched home (with their weapons technically "undefeated" for want of a better word). They formed Friecorps, members of which became the SA which became the SS, the iron fist of the Nazi regime.
Simon Cuthbertson The SA did not become the SS, thank you.
it's the 4x only version, ebay $1100. with a red dot on top
Hitler himself a disgruntled WW1 soldier who could not accept that Germany had surrendered because the soldiers on the ground didn't realise that at home the country was falling apart and so the politicians had to end the war quickly. They are one and the same war, they are just seperated by 20 years. Read a book.
Agree. To elected Germany in Country.
Hopefully the US Army switches over to multicam, at least I hope. I dislike ACU with a passion.
And a few years later they did. In various places. Australia, UK and the US.
