There was a show on the BBC of a young apprentice electrician wiring up the intercom in the captains cabin of this boat. A small bit of wiring but very necessary. The whole show was fascinating.
My first link to an British carrier was the HMS Eagle (1951 build) and the jets appeared small. I wish I had a camera but alas...I still have contact with John to this time. The Swedish sub with a sterling engine had virtually sank and American carrier and the sub could not be located. :)
That single boat can cause a lot of damage only the US boats are comparable, no other countries come near. The UK is the only country that has shared nuclear research program with the US. These really are the battleships of the 21st century. Carriers project power but these boats can destroy entire fleets. The UK's fleet may be small but it packs hell of a punch for its size. The next generation AUKUS attack boats capabilities will be terrifying.
I like the guy with the torch opening the tube door to make sure the torpedo had "left the building." Must make sense to check rather than believe the panel lights. Someones arse would have been in a sling if it was still there. I imagine the navy RSM equivalent has the same function and inbuilt fear factor.
The UK should build at least 10 successor class nuclear attack subs. The Astute class subs have gone through a long process of working out the "bugs" in these boats, so a successor class would have a great, tested platform to start with and modify using the best current submarine technology that has been developed since the Astute class Astute-class program began in February 1986. That being said, the US should loan the UK the money necessary to build a successor class to the Astute class subs or commit to buying a few successor class attack subs for the US Navy...
Yes, HMS Ambush is indeed the sub that both hit the bottom - in public - and while submerged, hit a tanker . Only cost a billion or so to sort it. Dont worry, the Captains knighthood is still safe.
"Repairs cost £2.1 million and the commander, who was training a group of students at the time, was sentenced to forfeiting a year of seniority for negligently hazarding the vessel."

Just wondering what the life span of such a sub might be. Is it a case of dry dock & a complete refit or does the sub just reach a point where it's simply too old?
Can you sell some to Australia?.... The French subs on order may not be available for decades....We may have to recommission some of our Oberon class until problems with the Collins class are sorted.

I still don't get who the UK thinks they'll need to fight to buy such advanced systems. It's amazing such a small country can spend billions of pounds on ships and missiles of all types. I've seen a frigate escort an oil tanker in the Persian gulf, but if anything goes hot, nothing wouldn't be sunk in such a small area with supersonic and potentially hypersonic anti-ship missiles, so it's curious indeed.
