  • In this video I distinguish the differences between a Expander Gate and a Noise Gate. So which one is better for podcasting and podcasters? After viewing this video you should have a good understanding of how an Expander Gate works and how a Noise Gate works. This will allow you to make a better decision in choosing which one works best for your recording.

Great job explaining something that I've always thought was complicated. After trying to play around with both, you've helped me quickly determine - expander is the way to go. Thank you!

THIS is the type of teachers we need. "If you 5ft, you aint getting in. If you 6ft, you coming in. That's how noise gate work ... now take ft to db and there you have it" BOOM, done to the point and learned within 3 minutes. Music class from 97, i'd still be trying to figure it out. I hated my teacher

This is the most descriptive explanation I've ever found despite reading many sites and watching a lot of videos on the topic of expander. Thanks!

Great explanation! I've had random cut outs of my voice and I think it's cus of my noise gate so gonna work on doing the expander

Would have been good if you'd hit bypass on your expander to let us hear your aircon, freezer, daughters talking and wife calling for comparison. Nice explanations anyway. Thanks!

Great explanation really helped me confirm that I'm better using the expander on my behringer mdx2600 than the questionable gate.

I started with a noise gate and later changed to a downward expander instead.

A noise gate is just that, its a gate. Its an on/off switch. Anything below the cut off and its off, anything above it and its on. Once its on you hear everything in background. That being said it is adjustable to a point with pre open, attack, hold, release and lowpass and high pass for frequencies. However once its on, it completely on and you hear everything until it closes. Its a gate, NOT a filter.
And expander is a filter. Along with being able to set a limit, attack and release you can also set a rate and how strong the roll off is. Think of it more as a Xover for a speaker or an eq adjustment but instead of working with frequency it works with sound level. This is why many good xover networks will have both frequency and decibal filters in them. Or an eq might have a bandwidth adjustment to effect how sharp or soft it rolls it off.

I have both the DBX 286s and the API Vision Channel Strip UAD plugin. The UAD plugin is actually giving me better background noise suppression AND audio quality than the DBX 286s hardware, any idea why?

Nice explanation, but you have "DBX 286S Channel Strip" so normaly you don't use expander and gate in the DAW.

Thanks for the feedback SchmauSy. Yes that is true but everyone doesn't have a DBX286s so I was speaking of Expanders and noise gates plugins for those who dont have the DBX286s.

Unless you are performing live, better to just use a plugin.

Hey mate, great explanation! Really helped me understand the key differences between the two. What would you recommend between the dbx166xs, dbx266xs or the Behringer mdx2600? These 3 are all around the same price range where I live (Australia) so I would appreciate your advice. Cheers

Expander. And unless you are performing live, skip the hardware solution and just use a plugin!

This is just my opinion but plugins are secondary (just my opinion). It all depends on the user and what works best for them. Some will use plugins while others choose hardware. I find that for me plugins don't work well and do a thorough enough job than when I use hardware. Some users will use plugin as it is a lot cheaper to get free plugins compared to buying hardware. Like I said though it all depends on the user. I rather have hardware. Me using plugins compared to using hardware is like me going into the store and buying the Food Lion/Kroger/ShopRite/Harris Teeter brand of sugar flakes cereal instead of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes.

@@StartToFinishPodcastingTV it's a different purpose. In live performance, the processing needs to be applied in real time.
But when studio recording, you are better off recording the master "clean" -- without effects -- and adding effects in post/render.
With decent preamps/converters, there is nothing you can't do better in post, unless your gain is too high and you are clipping.

@@mrtechie6810 I am now confused bro LOL. We were talking about using hardware vs plugins. Now you switched it up to the subject of recording with plugins vs recording without plugins. I guess I can address the "recording with vs recording without" plugins. The keyword you said in your last reply was "better off". The term "better off" is very subjective. Your "better off" may be different from someone else's "better off". What works for you may not work for the next person. I think you and I agree on the same thing but I may have not been clear in this video. When I talk about using hardware instead of plugins I didnt mean it in instances of prerecording. What I meant was that I prefer hardware when I am going live compare to using plugins. Now when recording a prerecorded podcast then it is best to record clean with no effects. I myself sometimes record with live processing applied to my live recordings because I have been in this game for a long time and know the exact settings I need to obtain good audio while others may not. If someone is more on the side of being a new podcaster then I strongly recommend that they record flat with no effects. However for a seasoned podcaster as myself I know more of what I am doing so applying effects (whether it is live recordings or prerecorded recordings) I get the same good results.
