Can you make a detailed video about examples of weekly/monthly workflows, like when’s the best time of the week/month to categorize or reconcile client accounts? Thank you!

Potential clients who ask for references. Some of my potential clients have asked to speak with my current clients to use as a reference but I am not very comfortable with this because my clients are already busy enough and its not fair to badger them with references all the time. I have testimonials on my website now so it's not as often anymore but still references are a topic that is cringey for me. I'd love to know your thoughts on this!

Ohh, yes, good points. I haven't run in to this a lot, but it's an interesting topic. Could you use other references (not clients specifically), like from past jobs, teachers, etc....anyone that you have a good relationship with and has see your personality/work ethic? Good call on getting testimonials on your website--I'm sure that helps.

@@FinePointsBookkeeping I want to let you know that your videos are well done and so helpful to new or wannabe bookkeepers! IMO, your videos rank in quality with Hector Garcia because of your content (and this is my biggest “bookkeeping” compliment!).

Great tips Morgan. Keep in mind, if you put yourself out there and market yourself as a bookkeeper and have a QB certification, you will rarely be asked about your experience. Even though the certification does not teach you bookkeeping, folks on the other side of the desk assumes that it does. I have tons of experience and not one of my 50 + prior tax clients or 10 of my current bookkeeping clients ever asked about my experience level since I started asking questions about them and their business that demonstrates empathy, understanding and an ability to solve their problem. Just never came up. Just have confidence in yourself and your prospective client will not be focused on your experience.

This is so true! I agree, I am almost never asked about my training/experience--most clients don't really understand the options. Great tips.

Many accounting firms require at least 3 years of working experience, which freshly certified workers don't have. I think starting your own company without experience at all is a little too risky because it's not just about your accuracy and knowledge as a bookkeeper but also about intricate laws that you have to navigate. When you work for a company they are insured in case something goes wrong and professional CPAs have your back, they can make complex adjustments if and when necessary. Taking all that into consideration, however, there should be more opportunities for workers to have on-the-job training. More often than not experience is required by employers, not clients. Clients assume you have experience when they reach out to you and if you don't deliver then it's easy to get a bad review that would go against the reputation of your company.

Hi! You make some really great points, but starting your own business is also very doable. Morgan always recommends opening your bookkeeping business as an LLC and getting E&O insurance to protect yourself and your company. There are also lots of great small businesses out there that have much simpler bookkeeping needs that are a great clients for someone just starting out. It also helps to have a bookkeeping network for when you do come across a question you can't answer. There are lots of really helpful bookkeepers out there that likely have the answer for you.

Hello, I love your videos and am desiring to start my own business. I have one client at the moment, a family member of a very small business that I'm handling books for. But I am nervous about getting a client I don't already know: I feel they could be much less understanding/patient with my learning curve than a family member.
Anyway, I am curious if you had ever thought about doing bookkeeping mentorship. You're a great teacher, and I know I'd for sure be willing to pay a set fee a month to have an expert available to contact just in case I needed guidance/assistance. Do you do something like that already?

Hi Miss Morgan, I love your videos! They're so in depth. Can the info in this video also apply to W-2 jobs as well? Reason being, I have applied to over 20 jobs and got 3 interviews. My resume only lists my past jobs as experience. I guess I need to rearrange it? I also did Bookkeeper Launch but didn't know I could put that experience on my resume. I was honest in the interviews but it hurt me every time. I wasn't ready yet to do a full blown bookkeeping business with little experience. Any info and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! First of all just let me just thank you for all your videos! I’m about to start my own bookkeeping business and I’m finding them so so helpful!
I have a question for you, do you print checks to pay for your clients expenses? Or you only pay online bills for them? I’m a little confused on how to go about it
I’ve worked with a bookkeeper that didn’t and I work with a bookkeeper ow that does but I’m not sure what is best?
    Thank you!

If you can only pay bills online, this is a great option, as it's real-time rather than waiting for checks to clear. -Gabe (FinePoints Admin)
