Where to get experience when starting a bookkeeping business? These are hacks for you to get started bookkeeping. I often get questions from aspiring bookkeepers who are having trouble getting their first client, or have questions about if they should focus on schooling or real-world experience. My answer is that both are important in your bookkeeping business. When I started bookkeeping, I first took classes on QuickBooks, then volunteered to get experience, then got my first paying bookkeeping client. It's a balance that will look different for everyone. This video gives you some ideas and hacks about where to start--including finding the QuickBooks Online sample company.

FinePoints will do. I am currently a bookkeeper at a elementary school and would like to start up my own business, one that I can take remotely while traveling. Over my 15 years working as accounting assistant and 2 years as bookkeeper for the schools, I have learned that government accounting and bookkeeping is quite a bit different from public sector. Can you touch on that as well as making business remote. What is recommended to best serve clients and myself etc.? Also if I start my business in Virginia and travel, will Va always be my business home base? Is there a FB page or blog which we can submit lengthy or specific to our situation questions?

It sounds like you have some great experience under your belt that will be invaluable as you get going (even if you do find some differences--I don't know much about working for the school system). I will add to my video list one specifically about working remotely and tips for that. I do have tips in many videos, but don't think I've made it all into one dedicated video. Your home base would be wherever you're filing taxes--I believe that people would usually pick one state as a base. Right now, this comments section is the best way to reach me and get a reply!

Nice to hear you mention Seth David at Nerd Enterprises. He has a video course called Bulletprooof Bookkeeping that teaches bookkeeping from the perspective of QBO. He teaches a lot of ways that Excel can be used with QBO, to speed up certain processes. The course also includes a slack community, where you can get all your questions answered. It's a fairly small group, so Seth is able to answer basically any question that comes through. There are others who are highly qualified in the group that answer as well. I'm taking the course right now and am enjoying it.

Hi, I am majoring in accounting at college but I think my English skill is just intermediate level. WHAT should I do to get a bookkeeping job? Furthermore, I don't have connections here because I am international student.
Practical experience is important for theoretical book knowledge to stick. I think going to University before any practical experience to properly frame the concepts is backwards.

Absolutely right! Plus, getting a degree it's not the cheapest thing in the world. So what if you end up not even liking bookkeeping/accounting? I think it's best to just get exposed to what ever trade and THEN pursue a college degree if you end up liking it!

Can you talk about how you have dealt with clients that commingle personal expenses in their business and/or questionable categorization directives being asked of bookkeepers? I’m concerned about the grey areas that can come up, and how hard to question whether a charge is a true business expense. Thanks!

Hello! It's been a couple of years. Did you start the bookkeeping business and if so, how's it going?
@@adrienemurphy1110 no, I didn’t start one. I ended up moving states twice in the last 2 years and changing jobs. I also didn’t really want to deal with unscrupulous business owners pushing for illegal accounting practices. I deal with enough difficult customers in my day job, and forcing others to adhere to regulatory requirements is tiring. Still, I think bookkeeping is a good business to start if you have the desire to do it.
@@LG_Av8r Thank you for your detailed response. I truly understand and share your frustration with dishonest people. I am in the early stages of learning to be a bookkeeper. The accountant I team with must have scruples and a work ethic that will not tolerate dishonest clients.

Hello Morgan. Love your channel so thank you! I have a question completely unrelated to this video. What is the difference between QB Online Accountant and your offer of 50% off Quickbooks for 6 months?
Good question! The accountant version would be for bookkeepers who want multiple clients. The offer of 50% off would be for a business owner who wants to get a subscription to QB (and not go through a specific bookkeeper).
As a proadvisor you can give your clients the 50% also

Also, You mentioned software in another video and initially always looking for the cheapest options. Are you talking about software like Quickbooks online? What other software would be needed? I am looking into Bookkeeper Launch and apparently they give you a year of Quickbooks for free but I want to make sure I’m not forgetting anything in terms of startup costs.

Can we work more than 40 hrs on qb as a student bcz uk government dont allow us to work more then 20 hrs
You said you are constantly partnering with a CPA. I'm just wondering if you pay them hourly for their time or how this works? Also, around tax time when a CPA is necessary, do most businesses you work for seek out their own CPA and you just work with them at that time? I'm just a bit confused with how this works.
There are different ways you can work with CPAs/Tax Professionals. You can be the outsourced bookeeper for them and they pay you. This is a great way to start.
You wouldn't neccesarily pay the CPA/Tax Professional yourself unless they are doing the tax prep for YOUR clients.

I like the idea to get free clients for a few months. How else, besides friends, can I find free clients?
How about asking friends if they know of anyone who owns a small business that may need help? Asking the "wrong" people can lead to finding the "right" ones :) -Gabe (FinePoints Admin)
I know this may be a stupid question but whatever. Who would pay for Quickbooks fee? The client or me?
Not a dumb question! :) You can do it either way... as a bookkeeper you can get a wholesale deal for each client. Then, you can either roll it in to your fees (which is what I do) or have them pay. Here's a video all about it: ruclips.net/video/hyKoi3Lhncg/видео.html

I'm currently enrolled in Bookkeeper Business Launch, and it is DEFINITELY worth the investment. We're learning material in months that would usually take years if you went to a university.
Of course you'll always want to continue learning, but I promise upon completion of the course, you'll feel a lot more confident to take on clients. As Ms. FinePoints stated, I think most of us struggle more with the idea of having our own businesses and gaining the first few clients vs actually being able to service them.
