- In this video I show you how to add the new vJunos switch from Juniper to EVE-NG. This switch is also known as the vEX as it is essentially the virtual EX switch appliance.
NOTE: Your EVE-NG VM must being running software version 5.0 or later to add this device to your lab.
Enjoy and subscribe!

Just discovered your channel whilst studying for the JNCIA, awesome content
Nice, happy labbing!
Helpful as always. Thanks Jon.
Thanks a lot! You are a good juniper influencer
I appreciate that
First of all, I would like to thank you for this explanation and this excellent video. I would simply like to suggest that you include the download links for the vjunos image in the video description and share it via a link on a drive to make access to the image easier. Thank you again :)
Hi @hamzadrif1356, thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you for the video helpful. Post reading this comment I've updated the video description with the Juniper link. Unfortunately I personally am unable to redistribute this image via a sharable link due to legal reasons.
Very funny…“ unless you’ve been living under a rock,“ you say…. I’m not under a rock, but close…Seoul. And primarily trained in Cisco but have my JNCIA. Been looking to make Juniper my main focus for a while. I love the programmability they offer
Haha… expanding familiarity with different vendors is always good. The cli of Juniper can be a learning curve at first but it’s nice to know the command line interface was built with automation in mind
Don't talk about me and my rock lol... Awesome vid perusal 😊
Haha I’m a few weeks late myself, don’t take it personally
Please pay attention, his eve-ng is Pro version so he does not need to do anything else rather than put the image inside a folder in qemu directory. If you use eve-ng community version you have to install git, then update the the template inside the /opt/unetlab/html/templates directory then you will see EX switch in your inventory list.
Thanks for sharing this tip
@@bph3649,can you do a video on this for community version?
@@priviledgekasambira1157 sure thing
Please more explanation, what do you mean by git ? what is it, hwo can i get it, thanks
Great video man! I'm moving from doing Cisco for the last 13yrs to Juniper these last few days. I took a position supporting the government and everything we deploy is Juniper. I need to pickup the basic syntax and start working on VXLAN Mist, but not sure if this switch supports it.
Nice, glad to hear your you enjoyed the video. So the vEx is supported in Mist however Mist won't allow you to configure a evpn fabric using this device even though vxlan is supported. So this function may come in the future.
My EVE-NG version is 5.0.1-13-Community
I followed your steps to set junos-vsrx3-x86-64-21.3R1.9.qcow2 successfully.
But vjunos-switch-23.1R1.8.qcow2 just won't appear as an option in my LAB add new node page.
please clarify my query
Hi Ran, it looks like there's a small difference between installing this new image on the community addition vs installing it on the EVE-NG pro addition. In this video, I used the pro version to perform this process. Putting together soon for the community addition version.
When I boot up the vEX and in shell trying to enter cli by the command 'cli' i get the error message: "could not open user interface connection: management daemon not responding" any idea?
Sometimes this can be due to the device not done loading all the way up yet but if you're still encountering this issue try "right clicking" the device and selecting "wipe node" and then click "start" to boot the device or just add a new node to your lab environment. Let me know if this helps
I've been seeing conflicting reports. Does your eve-ng have to be a bare-bones install or can your use the switch on a eve-ng installation within ESXI. I read it had to be on a bare-bones because of the nested vm, within a vm x 2 or 3.
As long as your pc CPU supports virtualization within virtualization you should be good. I’m running this image on a VM using VMware workstation on windows.
@@jongreenitAre you running baremetal? I am seeing the vm goes to boot loop because this. Juniper also say that they do not allow to run the vm without baremetal. How you are doing this under vmware workstation?
Do you have any options to have Juniper Mist cloud for vEx switches to test in Eve-ng
Yes so as long as you provide internet access to the vEX switches within your EVE-NG lab you can successfully discover them within the Mist cloud. They should show up as a EX9214 switch.
also..followed this vid t oa T and the switch doesn't pop up in the drop down list on EVE. running 23.2R1.14 community. any thoughts?
Yes, this is a known issue in this video I was using the pro version of EVE-NG. Checkout this on for the community edition: New vJunos Switch (vEX) not showing up in EVE-NG
ruclips.net/video/wpp-nxnAVO4/видео.html
Your EVE-NG templates need to be updated
I follow your steps, but finally execute "/opt/unetlab/wrappers/unl_wrapper -a fixpermissions" on EVE-NG
The system did not respond with any messages.
Even so, I log in to web eve-ng and create a new node, but I still can't see the vjunos option.
Reinstalled EVE-NG checked every step but can't solve the problem...
If you logout of your EVE-NG lab, what version you’re running
@@jongreenit My EVE-NG version is 5.0.1-19-Community
I followed your steps to set junos-vsrx3-x86-64-21.3R1.9.qcow2 successfully.
But vjunos-switch-23.1R1.8.qcow2 just won't appear as an option in my LAB add new node page.
The only difference is when the verification command is executed on eve-ng
I don't see "check state valid"
@@Ryan.C24 Hi Ryan it looks like there's a slight difference between installing this image on the community version vs installing it on the pro version of EVE-NG. Putting together a tutorial soon.
I am using eve-community version the latest one, I have installed the templates, config-scripts, and icons and when I start the node I got the FPC 0 in an absent state, no ge* interfaces are showing up, any idea please, thanks
Hey, sometimes it takes a moment after booting the device for the device's interfaces to come up. Are you still encountering this issue?
I have the same issue, it continously booting up without any FPC there
@@amigodiba9560 Hi, I've had some people performed the steps outline hear and were able to get it working. Try reinstalling the image using the steps outlined in this video: ruclips.net/video/wpp-nxnAVO4/видео.htmlsi=FnOqiAtFrxn6vDY7
Hai does need bare metal server or virtual server for running the EVE-NG ?
You can run either, however you get better performance from EVE-BG by using a bare metal server
Added device in eve-ng . But failed to reach the device due to high packet loss.
Some times it work but fails most.
Do you know cause of the issue.?
Appreciate your help.
I know the vEX device is a very resource intensive device. Check your computers utilization using task manager when running the device.
Hi sir, i used eve-ng version 5.0.19 and install in GCP, but when running vjunosswitch/vEX interface can't come up,,, can help me?
Hey Camps, what error do you get when starting the device?
@@jongreenit interface not showing, and status fpc absent/offline
@@jongreenit can you share fix image for vEX and include template vjunoswitch to email
@@campsputra1255 Unfortunately I haven't tested using this image on GCP platform are you using the community version or EVE-NG pro?
Junos image uploaded in EV-ng but when it starts and stops immediately.
same!
Try checking out this vid I put together: ruclips.net/video/wpp-nxnAVO4/видео.html
having the same problem. already followed the other youtube video and still starts and stops immediately
what telnet client are you using? Also when i started my junos switch I do not even get to the "root>" part for me to enter commands. You have any idea or help to point me in the right direction.
Hi Sergio, still having issues? What prompt do you see when you start the device?
@@jongreenit I'm good to go. A little bit of research and found the answers. Could you do a video on how to use superputtybin eve Ng by chance?
Hi so that unl_wrapper command -a fixpermissions command. When i entered that in my eveng VM I didnt get a message that said "online check state valid."
Hi Sergio, I am experiencing the same. Instead of getting to root>, I get to root@~:. It seems that Junos OS didn't run well and runs the normal Linux OS only. Can you help?
@@sergiot2014 Good to hear your issue has resolved, I'm not too familiar with superputtybin - what are you seeking to do?
this juniper image file contains which juniper devices
This is the an virtualized version of the Ex9212
I can only use switch. Any work arounds on how to use 2 or more as the 2nd one will not boot up
These devices are a bit resource intensive
It could be due to resource consumption on your pc
I'll try the older one. Are you able to load load 2 and more ?
follow your steps, but finally execute "/opt/unetlab/wrappers/unl_wrapper -a fixpermissions" on EVE-NG
The system did not respond with any messages.
Even so, I log in to web eve-ng and create a new node, but I still can't see the vjunos option.
Have you tried restarting the EVE-NG VM?
This is also my case, the system did not respond any message or prompt any Valid messages.
what about pnetlab ?
Interesting...i've never heard of pnetlab - I'll have to check it out
and im running 5.0.1-19-Community
@tkoauto you will need to manually update the templates on your EVE-NG node. See the first three steps in the link below to perform this process: www.eve-ng.net/index.php/documentation/howtos/template-icons-and-config-scripts-update-from-git/
@@jongreenit Thanks vermuch for the extra video!!!
I keep getting the following message " --[end kernel panic - not syncing: No working init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. See Linux Documentation/init.txt for guidance) Cannot enter any thing else after message.
The vEX vm is not starting up on EVE-NG. Following the process to install it and installed templates. The EVE-NG is the supported release for the vm.
Ah yes, this seems similar to an issue I ran into in the pass try following this video here and let me know if that resolves the issue: ruclips.net/video/wpp-nxnAVO4/видео.html
