YESS I watch the reboot and I think I like it I think it's good it's okay but OG Gossip Girl is FAR SUPERIOR like the fashion, the locations it was actually shot in New York, it was just rich kids being MESSY AS HELL and doing dumb AND illegal shit (like drinking at bars and nightclubs and no one saying anything just because their rich) AND THE DRAMA WAS JUST ON ANOTHER LEVEL!!

The thing about the original GG was how fresh and one-of-a-kind it was in the teen drama sphere. It was right before the rise of social media, so a gossip blog dedicated to teenagers was interesting and exciting. It was way more scandalous than any other teen show in terms of sex, drinks, drugs, illegal shit - and it owned up to it, when the bad reception of the first season came out they used it as advertising for the second season. It was also a show in New York that was actually shot in New York, not in a set in Toronto. That show lived in New York, every single building, hotel, monument was real and unreachable and a part of the story rather than just a background. The fashion was absolutely crazy (and it still holds up today) and as the seasons went along the fashion itself also became a character rather than just a plot setting. It was also at a time where fashion and celebrities were unreachable, not like today where you can see anyone on Instagram or see any luxury brand collection the second they drop, so having people like Lady Gaga and Florence + The Machine actually perform in the show and showcasing the fashion of its time and these big-name designers was crazy, it was an event. And I would argue that in the first 2-3 seasons, most of the narrative felt organic (as organic as a plot like this can be), as you mentioned the plot was so seamless in introducing the world and the characters. And it also did not have any qualms about being socially conscious, it was about a bunch of rich kids who loved being rich kids and none of the commentaries about generational wealth was preachy - it only stated the reality of a capital hierarchical society. I don't think the new GG can be any of these, or be as effective in any of these, as GG was a product of its time.

@Avondale KA greatly put. honestly, there should be more video essays on original GG and its themes and approach to class, generational wealth, aristocracy, power dynamics etc. We talk a lot about how it was bad or problematic as a teen romance drama but as a product of a very different time in terms of what people saw as wealthy (and how much of it was presented to us to see unlike today's flex culture) there is a lot to explore about it, I think.

In episode two I was cackling when zoya was saying her teacher lets them act out the books they're reading and she said they were reading "things fall apart"... as a black person, i would have an aneurysm if my teacher told me i needed to act out the traumatic events in that book in front of my white classmates for a grade. i don't think there was enough black representation in the room when writing that line

I know I'm late, but I just wanted to point out something else about the casting, the actress who plays one of the minions (Luna) Zion Moreno is actually a Mexican-American trans woman. I don't know if they will incorporate that into the show, but I think is cool that it has such a diverse cast.

Fun fact: as a teen when the show was running, every Monday I’d get in trouble with my mom because after watching the show, I felt so sassy. I was too embarrassed to tell her why I felt so sassy so I just took it.

the teachers storyline is like a whole separate show! like this isnt what im watching for. Kate gets some major screentime and the actress is wonderful, but i skipped all of her scenes towards the end and it didnt impact my enjoyment or the plot in the Slightest.

The books were the ULTIMATE guilty pleasure. They got so off the storyline in the show, though I liked it as its own separate thing.
I wish they'd made a show version of The It Girl series instead, at least it wouldn't have just been a straight up reboot then.

Never seen either Gossip Girl but this was a fun listen.
I actually loved the way social media was used in the original series, idk if it could really work now. Like at the time technology and social media still felt new, im pretty sure when the first season came out facebook hadnt even really blown up in the mainstream yet. It was kind of about social media making you feel like an "it person" and like a celebrity in a way, even if it was from negative gossip, it seemed exciting. And now social media being shown in other media like tv shows just feels saturated, commentary about it feels saturated, and it doesnt hold this luster and sense of new world possibility that it did as a kid growing up way back in 2007. Not that that was the only appeal of the show, the relationships for the 1st few seasons of all the main characters felt very genuine, i really liked all the actors, and i just dont care for this new cast. And even as someone who personally dislikes new york, i loved the look of the original show, the snow, the elite aesthetics, the colorfulness. The new one just doesnt pop for me it just feels derivative idk

Lol, I loved gossip girl, it came out my freshman year of HS and I watched it everyday. I rewatched it during lockdowns last year. Now, as a teacher myself, the new one's reveal of who gossip girl was gonna be, and why, was hilarious and so mind boggling! First, what teacher has time for that?? Second, y'all are the adults here! Teachers in the original get entangled in some drama, but that was looked down on then, and it should be now! Lol
The most important thing to take away from this episode is that Zach & Sandra Bullock have the same birthday

I do wanna point out how much Zara has contributed to the unsustainability of fast fashion, green washes their recent attempts to bring in recycled materials (Hasan Minhaj did a prank pop-up shop and wrote a bit about it), and they’re not even trying to reduce their reliance on human sweatshops. So there’s that.
I don't know if the creators of the show have said nice, but I feel that Elite on Netflix was a big factor in bringing this back, I kinda feel that they could also go further with the representation of different sexualities because of Elite.
Even though I like the reboot I kind of prefer Elite over it like the Elite's first 2 seasons GOLD, & I did like the 3rd though I was screaming "WHERES MY GUZNADIA & CARMUEL" other than that I enjoyed it because it revolved more around Polo as it had too, 4th season I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either (BI QUEEN REBE!!!)

I felt so sad hearing that kelsey never got to fulfill her gossip girl new york fantasy- but at the same time isnt that kind of reflective of the whole theme of the original show? Dan aka lonelyboy (which apparently he nicknamed himself bc he was gossip girl *eyeroll*) looking in from the outside on this elite group of people that he secretly was fascinated with bc he kind of wanted to be a part of- and through that he actually does end up becoming a part of it. Like with the last shot of the last episode and there was dan and serena sitting with chuck and blaire i felt like there was this implied sentiment that you deserve to be a part of whatever you want to be but youre telling yourself that youre not. Kelsey, you are gossip girl.
i want them to do a follow up episode at the end of the season and debrief the entire season and classify it as guilty or pleasure

I've spent all morning watching this series; as a huge fan of the original I wanted to give it a chance and now I have thoughts. I'm just gonna say this right off the bat, this show (so far) doesn't hold a candle to the original, no shade just my honest opinion. The biggest problem with this reboot (aside from being a reboot nobody asked for) is the reintroduction of Gossip Girl. One of the best aspects of the original series was the existence and the mystery around who Gossip Girl was. When we were first introduced to GG it was just this entity that was already established and cemented as a thorn in the side (if you will) of Manhattan's elite. By presenting GG as this already existing "character" shrouded in mystery, IMO it added excitement an intrigue as to who GG was, what she knew, how she knew it and ultimately what her motives were for doing all this; in addition we loved to see just how GG would screw with our favorite elitists. The series thrived on the mystery of GG and the sort of checks and balances system she provided, sending the message that money, power and influence has its limits and always comes at a cost. On the other hand reintroducing GG as just a group of disgruntled teachers upset and abused by their over privileged students just feels cheap. It not only takes all the mystery and excitement out of GG it makes their motives seems selfish and their actions creepy and cruel. As a result the teachers feel like the villans and by extension GG itself and makes you sympathetic to the students much more than you should or would ever want too. Where GG in the original felt somewhat necessary in the new series it just feels WRONG. I understand the reboot sought to go in a different direction and IMO was forced to because of the mistake made by the original series. The reveal that Dan was Gossip Girl was IMO the biggest mistake EVER, it not only destroyed the key element of mystery in the original but ruined any chance of good reboot. That being said the one aspect of Gossip Girl's reintroduction that was good was it's evolution. Where the original GG was centered on one person, making it feel a bit unrealistic, the expansion of Gossip Girl to be this network with everything essentially contributing was GENIUS. It was an idea that while hinted at in the original it was made real in this new series making it more realistic and current and reflective of the times.
My other major issue with this series are the characters; simply put most of the characters are boring with a few minor exceptions but ultimately none of them help sell the series as what it's meant to be; they pale in comparison to the OG characters and fail to present themselves as true Manhattan elitists. Of course the new characters shouldn't just be carbon copies of the originals (although the show definitely tried it) a good reboot should at least capture the essence and feel of the original and this series just doesn't. Everything in this series just feels too relatable and way too high school and not at all like rich kids dealing with rich kid problems. As a 16 year old junior in high school watching the original series, while I was able to relate to the characters as being high schoolers that's where the similarities ended. From the first episode the show established Blair, Serena and the rest of the gang as "not your ordinary teenagers." With the exception of Dan the "Every Man" these kids were the sons and daughters of captains of industry and business moguls and hedge funders etc and they knew it and more importantly they acted like it. School was just an after thought, a minor inconvenience in the way of their busy lives of family obligations, pressures and socialite life. In the original series because most of the episodes centered around a party or event you were constantly reminded that this was a whole other world and as the viewer and because of Gossip Girl you were allowed a glimpse into that world, and that was the point.The new series in comparison focuses so much on school and the Every Man perspect that you kinda yawn and forget it's supposed to be a show about the rich kids; as a result it feels less like a new direction and more like a poor imitation of what it claims to be.
All that being said the only Characters I kind of like in this show are Max, Aki, Julien and as of the most recent episode, Obie (though less so than the first three). While yes they have their own issues in terms of character development, they are characters with potential and generate just enough interest around them (IMO) that I want to know more about them and see their growth. The rest of them are a complete wash and yes that includes Zoya "the Every Girl."
The true tragedy of this show is that if it was called anything else it would be a really good show but because it burdened itself with the title of such a beloved series like Gossip Girl it unfortunately will never live up to the original and people's expectations. Despite this little rant I will continue to watch as it isn't the worst thing to watch and I do think it can get better, here hoping....XOXO, GOSSIP GIRL!

Serena does lose her good girl persona I honestly think she was worse than Blair and she was my most disliked character which is saying something cause nearly everyone in Gossip Girl is a terrible person.
On another note I personally don't like the over sexualisation of teen media, most teens aren't having a bunch of crazy sex (you're an outlier Kelsey) All these teen characters like in Elite, Euphoria and now the New Gossip Girl are highly sexualised and I think it's gross to only display minors this way, even if they are played by adults cause the characters are still teens.
I am a grey asexual so I may be in the minority with this opinion. But I also don't like constantly having to be subjected to high amounts of sex in everything that is out there for me to watch.
It could possibly be a generational thing too, like teen media back in the 00's was crazy hyper-sexed and put soooo much pressure on losing your virginity before 18 or you were deemed a loser from what I have seen. I think I remember reading somewhere a few years ago that in general gen z is having less sex than the older generations were having at their age (this is when the oldest were just hitting 20) and like I think we just feel the pressure to 'get it over with' less? As well as growing up with media that showed how quickly it could backfire esp for teen girls bc of slut-shaming and teen pregnancy? Maybe it was bc I went to a smaller school where rumors and gossip spread quickly that people weren't messing around so much lmao.
I agree. I think the oversexualization of teen characters in media is something that'll be looked back on in a negative light. The majority of these shows & movies could be aged up to college & would make more sense. (Like Riverdale or Pretty Little Liars)

I literally don't watch most shows like this for a reason. Like how hard is it to just have a show with all the same elements that takes place in college? Like who's life experience is more interesting before graduation unless you peaked. And if it must be set in high school, why not hire actual teenagers. It's so gross
@@niinban6057 well if you hire actual teenagers then people won’t be comfortable seeing them over sexualized or having hookups with adults e.g teachers. Casting adults makes us forget that they are supposed to be teenagers :(
