Honestly though, I just graduated High School and literally my experience was the complete opposite of that. Makes me feel like I missed out, especially because I can bet that half of the people at my school had similar experiences to hers.

I don’t understand how this movie was so popular the lead was so toxic and violent it was hard for me to watch. There are so many amazing rom cons like she is the man and even Netflix “set it up” and more why this one become so popular?

This movie was all filmed about 3kms away from the house, in Cape Town, South Africa 🇿🇦 I'm so glad it's not noticeable. The school is the University of Cape Town. And the "rich" house is Bishops Court, one of the most expensive areas here. If you watch Black Mirror with Miley Cyrus, that is also shot here in a fancy area called Camps Bay. Oh yes, the best Black Mirror episode
San Junipero is also all Cape Town.

Listening to the hosts talk about how much they related to this movie and other teen shows is WILD and surprising to me. As someone who’s aro ace, I didn’t even relate to teen rom coms when I was a teen and thought they were highly unrealistic. Clearly I was not the target audience lol

At this point I feel like there's the super over the top teen movies filled with sex, drugs, alcohol, and just total independence that like half of (or rather less than half) people relate to that are praised because they're gritty and aren't afraid to show what's "really happening" with the teens. Sure, that does happen to quite a few teens and so I feel like the majority of teen movies are made to emphasize/focus on that experience. But then there's like the other half of (or more so) teens, including myself, whose experiences in high school don't include sex, relationships, drugs, and late night hangouts at the park/beach/abandoned spots, rather with teens at home studying, hanging out by themselves or with their friends on the weekends / just grabbing coffee walking home/taking the bus afterschool. Overall seeming more mundane (seeming being the key word) and because of that the experience is made out to be way too tame and uninteresting, so those experiences are just neglected in the end and no one bothers to create movies or shows about that. So teens actually having those experiences end up feeling left out or like they've missed out because and that their high school experience was terrible in some way.
I don't know. I think I just started and couldn't stop there for a good 15 mins.

I still can't believe that you guys actually have "popular" kids. That's so embarrassing. Like, I was raised in a community with no kids declaring themselves "popular" and to transfer to high school where there were kids like that and I never stopped laughing.
Literally came from another podcast man. And I'm still contemplating whether or not I should continue to listen to this. It's 2AM and I don't know whether or not I should go to bed. I'm not even doing homework, just an animation and it took me 1 hour to create at least 6 frames and now I'm sobbing as the podcast talks
I cracked up at the reasoning for The Rockstars, but I initially figured it had to do with drugs but the name was based of roxies, like mentioned in previous pods.
