The thing about this machine is if you’re coming from just a DAW it might not be for you, but if you grew up using original sps etc it’s a game changer. Mute groupes, resampling patterns, loads of customisable real time effects, chromatic pads, simultaneous triggering of multiple pads, pitch shifting, usb audio etc is huge for a sampler that fits in your backpack. I’m used to the sx so I’m really satisfied. The effects are arguably not as good as our daw’s but still really good. It doesn’t play too well with other midi gear but oh well, we already knew that. When you’re on the sp time starts to dilate, you come up with things you wouldn’t necessarily think of doing in your software, a bit like the digitakt . Sampling straight into the machine. That’s the magic of it. I don’t like looking at retina displays and touch screens all day personally, much prefer this or oleds but I’m old school I guess
I agree... except for the FXS... i wouldn't say they aren't as good as DAW based plugins, they are just different. I would say just as good or better depending on what you are trying to do. I come from a MPC and DAW background but I always wanted to try a SP. One of the things that intrigued me was all the FXS and the lofi. I just got the SP-404 MK2 yesterday... im liking it so far, it is definitely a learning experience.
@@BIGPUN4EVER True, but to some the fx are an acquired taste but I love them for what they are. Roland have pretty much answered to all our demands with the new mk2. I already use the SX and I’m still happy with it but when I can I will go for the mk2. I think you’re gonna love it, trust me I picked up the SX really fast with the manual and I’m NO natural.
I cannot live without mine ... after receiving the mk 2 ... it still took me 6 months to sell my SX ... and I wasn’t using it and I like mk2 better but I still didn’t want to let go of my sx
Agreed, I used to make music in Reason 10 but I couldn't stand it. I work in IT 8 hours a day 5 days a week and I get tired of using computers sometimes. I picked up a MPC One because it was standalone and I love the workflow. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago I got a 404mk2 and it's been amazing. Once I grasped the workflow its so easy to make music on it. I take it with me on the road and I just hook up my myVolts cable and powerbank and have a lot of battery life to make music on it. It feels like guerrilla beatmaking in that you don't have all the bells and whistles of a DAW or even the MPC 2.0 DAW in a box, but you can get a lot done with it. I work on my 404 every day and I love every minute of it.
I could never sell one piece of my gear and it's the akai remix 16 my first sampler... now with this new sp I really feel my dimension a good compromise between akai and roland world... I'd love to try the sp 505, but ye there is something magic working with just a oled and a bounce of buttons
i'll tell ya this; when I got my OG Sp404 over a decade ago (wow, time flies), I sat and read the manual front to back before even trying anything... then I read it again. Then I kept it right next to the 404; it went with the machine in the travel bag to band practice; constantly referring back to it, or even re-reading random bits of it in my spare time. Now, all these years later, I still know the random counter-intuitive input combos for the various commands like the back of my hand. They say working on outboard gear is producing 'out of the box'. the 404 is a world of it's own, and you'll have to think outside of the box as you explore it's seas. Consider the manual your life-raft.
It is rough at the beginning, it is so weird & rough but then after a little while, it slowly becomes easier and one day, for no good reason, it suddenly becomes fun and soon, you're addicted to that little machine in all its weirdness and you finally end up loving it and spend hours playing, resampling, recording, having a great time
This right here is so accurate. I was confused figuring it out, and I had a maschine background, but the ways to go about doing certain things felt so weird. Eventually it did just click, and now I'm addicted and have been for months
Once you take the time to learn this thing , you realise that it's a beast. Although there is a work around, the ONLY thing i am praying for is being able to playing basslines chromatically in the pattern mode.
@@BeefyTime1 Yeah that's the work around I was referring to in my post brother. It's just a pain in the ass when I'm so used to taking it for granted being able to do this so easily on my my mpc.
