A great voice, amazing artist! When I will pass away at the end of my life I hope to meet You in paradise so we'll sing beautiful songs together....rip in peace Mahalia
Benimadhav Mohanty She woukld probably be horrified to be called a Blues singer. This one of the very few secular songs she recorded. However, I think I know what you probably mean. Although not Blues as such, you get that feel with those Blues notes and intervals that dominate her singing. That Blues feel seemed to be a dominant feature of a lot of older Gospel singing although it was far more ornate than traditional 'Blues which tended to be be very spare. However, modern Gospel singing seems to me to have gone crazy with loads of elaborate runs, arpeggios and other overdone embellishments, and much less of a Blues feel.
Mahalia refused to sing songs that didn’t have a message, but she did have a number of non-gospel songs in her repertoire. She sang songs like Trees, Without A Song, Put A Little Love In Your Heart, Danny Boy, In the Summer of His Years, How are things in Glocka Mora. Her mission was always to uplift the people to whom she sang. Even some of the religious music she recorded was not ‘gospel’ music. It just so happened that the timing of the height of her career was perfect. Following WW2, a lot of American song writers wrote religious-themed pop music which led to songs like: I Believe, Never Walk Alone, etc. So this gave record producers pop material they could supply Mahalia with that did’t take away from her religious convictions.
Я плачу каждый раз...это не мой язык,но как же понятно она молится и обращается к Отцу нашему...молюсь вместе с ней. Это лучшее исполнение. Это самая искренняя молитва)

There are so many wonderful versions of this song out there, but I have to say - this is the one for me.
I like how real she makes each song feel. That's rare.
Her voice is so perfectly beautiful. This woman would have you crying at your own funeral...
Yes. Indeed, she would.
Toujours MAGNIFIQUE H
She sings this with more feeling than any of my other favorite recordings of Summertime (with much, much respect to Ella and Billie).
I love her so musty ,big mama I get all of my daily strength from you
Definitely the best version!
I thought the exact same thing! My mind is blown! So much for who I thought the Greats were...THIS Lady surpasses all of them!

This is a wonderful song, but the performance is on a totally different level, stratospheric!

wow, so powerful.
Unsurpassable, galactic. Mahalia rulez!
Magnificent.
I'm shocked to discover this video because I thought Mahalia vowed to never sing secular songs. Again, I'm stunned.
This is the only song she did that wasn’t religious
The best version!!!!!!
so angelic
Captivating.
Thanks for posting this
Love you Madam!!!!
No word to explain my feelings, I like that song ❤☆☆☆☆
Great to see Jackson in color during this period.
wow. speechless.
I’ve never heard her sing anything but gospel.
She purposely refused to sing anything else
@@malikford6291 I know, that’s why I was surprised
Same for me, I thought her only exception was for Come Sunday, when she took part in the recording of Black, brown and beige with Duke Ellington

Preciosa......
Alucinante interpretación de la reina del gospel
I’m cry’n...so beautiful.
This is why with certain singers and certain songs there is no ' better version '...
Only black People can sing like that and make me a grown man cry
Beautiful 😍
Incredible splendid interpretation
All that I know is that she was great gospel singer.
Я плачу каждый раз...это не мой язык,но как же понятно она молится и обращается к Отцу нашему...молюсь вместе с ней. Это лучшее исполнение. Это самая искренняя молитва)
This is not a prayer to god....
Maravilhoso! Que emoção!
Fantástico, simplesmente!
Never heard anything quite so awesome like that
Amazing
One of the few non-religious songs she sang.

Didn't know she sang secular music as well, always thought she was straight up and down _Gospel music._
QUEENKIM4EVER She still was, she just put a gospel twist on this song.

Definitely Nigerian ancestry look at those cheeks!
that is true. her ancestors were poor slaves that were captured in Nigeria, I think they were mainly from the Ibo tribe.
@@Tenderness1959 How do you know this?
@@joshuamercer448 I studied slavery and for example, the great bass singer Paul Robeson knew that his father, a former slave, came from the Ibo tribe.

All respect to Miss Mahalia, but this is my second favorite. Fantasia's is my first.
You, CAN'T be serious - love Fantasia; but, really, I mean REALLY! Not even of the same musical level or pantheon!
