So Deadline have posted a new article that announces a new Denis Villeneuve film is on the way on December 18th 2026. They predict that it's either Dune Messiah or Nuclear War: A Scenario. But they also mention that locking down cast members could point towards it being Messiah and that Villeneuve himself is debating over which one to put into production first. I breakdown the likelihood of it being Dune Messiah along with the changes that could be made to make it work only a few years after Dune Part 2. Deadline article: deadline.com/2024/06/dune-3-release-date-2026-1235986164/
I hope it's Dune. Denis said it would be good for his sanity to make another movie before returning to Dune, but I feel like after taking that break, he changed his mind. After the success of part 2 and him taking a little time off, I'm sure he's excited to complete the trilogy, and I can't wait.
**Mild spoiler for Messiah: Perhaps you’re thinking about the aging vs actor issue in reverse. Remember, chronic usage of the spice melange has an added benefit of anti-aging, so Villeneuve could do both a full time jump bringing Aliyah into her canon age as well as explaining why Paul/Chani don’t appear to be like 40 years old. Additionally (***MILD SPOILER FOR CHILDREN OF DUNE***) remember that highly advanced members of the Bene Gesserit have the ability to alter their enzymatic chemistry to adjust their biological aging. It’s used to slow aging in Children of Dune but could be performed to accelerate aging too I’m sure.
Yeah but also weren’t Paul and chani supposed to be like 17 or at least in the books? A 12 year time jump would put them around 30 yrs old, which Timothee and Zendaya would probably be by the time they start filming again
Sorry, Cortex, but I think you're way off. There's no way they're having Anya Taylor-Joy play what would technically be an 8-year-old if they include her romance with Duncan. I think it's more likely they'll stretch the story to cover a larger time period in order to show Paul and Chani reconciling. You can age up the actors easily or remind the audience that spice extends human lifespans. Or they could just not mention how many years have passed since Paul's ascension to the throne on the assumption that the audience won't really care. After all, nobody was bothered by the events of the 2nd film rather implausibly taking place over a period of less than 9 months. Part 2 begins with a scene of Harkonnen soldiers refusing to use shields that would have saved their lives, and it's so gorgeous you either don't notice or don't care. Put on a good show and the audience won't ask too many questions.
Dune Part III will not be released in 2026. This is 1000% another project. Maybe one based on Nuclear War: A Scenario or Rendezvous with Rama. Might even be Cleopatra, but Villeneuve himself said he wants to do something else before returning to Dune.
Excellent video as per usual. This makes me nervous for the quality of the third film compared to the first two. I trust DV to push hard for quality over quantity and speed. He's stated he wants to take it slow, as long as it takes to get it right. But at the same time, studios and executives have proven time and time again that they value fast profit over quality. They never learn. Personally, I'll be dissappointed if this release date turns out to be Dune Messiah. I'll still go see it eagerly on opening day, but my expectations will be severely reduced. This feels rushed. In contrast, with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, our global excitement to see the third movie was equal to the first two, not only because the first two had equal quality to each other, but because we knew full well that all three had been produced in a way and in a timeline that enabled that quality to be upheld. Fingers crossed that DV can do what it takes in spite of studio interference.
I would think Dune Part Three would be a much easier and quicker turn around than jumping into an entirely whole new production from the very start. We know the script for D3 is written. We know there is a solid executive team BTS already prepped and ready to go - meaning cinematography, costumes, Hans is literally jumping at the bit.... I'm sure locations are locked down, the money is already allocated - I would assume the only thing that could put a wrench in this project is the availability of the actors. I haven't read D3 so I don't know how 'epic' the book goes. I'm told it's less bombastic so if that stays true - I obviously could be an easier shoot. So we might very well be getting this third masterpiece sooner than later. I'm game.
I just read that Annie Jacobsen Nuclear War book. Prepare to have the poo scared all the way out of you. It's the kind of discovery you wish you'd never made.
I really don't understand why there's an "ageing" problem here. LET there be as much as an 18- or 20-year time jump between the jihad and the events of "Messiah" and let the makeup artists age up the returning actors as required (or maybe "youth down" in the case of the Hayt character). It's not that big a deal. Book purists (I'm a marginal one myself) will be able to rationalise a less than typically dramatic ageing of some characters over such a time jump due to properties of spice that those who have only seen the films only have never had fully explained to them (but probably don't need to be spoon-fed in any event.)
I think it all comes down to what Denis is more concerned about. Humanity being wiped out in the 8-minute apocalypse? Or being led to their doom by charismatic leaders (probably in an 8-minute nuclear apocalypse)? Death by human nature zoomed in... or zoomed out.
I think there will be a 16 year time jump if not more rather than a smaller time jump. I think the romance between Hayt and alia will be in the film and I doubt they will have jason momoa and a 8 year old girl getting it on. Easyier to make the cast look older in my opinion.
F. Herbert wrote the fascinating science fiction “Dune” with ingenious settings like some tech limitations. On the other, his intelligence might have told us that such limitations would block civilizational development. For example, the planets liberated from the Guild Navigators had to be reigned by a similar God Emperor. I hope talented D. Villeneuve solves the dilemma with a humane, hopeful, but exciting movie adaptation.
Regarding the Jihad, they dont need to make the death toll smaller. They can just emphasize that the Fremen converted vast numbers of people to their side, which is a very common idea amongst the fanbase anyways. Edit: Furthermore, Paul is stated in the book to have barely aged despite the 12 year skip, mainly due to significant consumption of spice.
A nuclear war film is a waste of time and DV’s talent. How isolated or stupid would someone have to be in order not to know nuclear war is bad. They are here, no country that has them is going to give them up completely.
Ive also heard he has a secret project in the works he's not allowed to talk about but after what he did with Dune (condensed it and left loads out) im hoping we get a good couple of years before Messiah even though it is a shorter story. Cheers Cortex Bro.💯👊🏾
I'm gonna be honest, if I had to choose what he'd direct next it'd be the Oppenheimer sequel. Villeneuve directing a nuclear war film is a combination I am absolutely looking forward to. He'll kill it.
Very curious to see where they take Messiah. Obviously it will be a slightly different story than the book because of the changes made in the second film, but I still believe Denis can pull off a faithful Messiah adaptation. The first two Dune films are proof of that. And I really hope to see Robert Pattinson as Scytale, I think he really fits that universe.
Hardly think he would have had Taylor-Joy not appear in Dune 2, if he didn't plan to show her roughly that age in a later film. He will do a great job, no matter.
He should just do the rest of the dune books. Take a long break then do 3 more. Take another long break and do the last 3 movies. There is enough content there for 9 movies in total.
I'm assuming spoiler comments are ok. But yeah being that the spice melange is both a geriatric drug AND something that CAN speed aging up, I'm not too worried about aged faces and cgi and stuff.
It’s weird that the JIHAD was such a consequential part of the novels, yet DV managed to avoid the word being used. There are many other weird and stupid changes made to the characters that also seemed to conform to current woke sensibilities.
We may only have a couple of years left before the bombs go off, rather watch dune 3 before I die than some film about stupid massive bombs going off. we all know what happens its a giant shit show and everybody is f**ked so at least let us watch dune 3 before it happens

Gonna read it now.👍🏽
what about Rendevous With Rama
Messiah first! But now I'll watch anything that Villeneuve does. His movies are on my must watch list like Christopher Nolan's movies!🙏
Hopefully Dune.
Denis is on a role the last few years. Then Rendezvous with Rama.
ITS RENDEVOUS WITH RAMA NOT DUNE MESSIAH

Alia aging faster would be a must if they want to include her romance with the resurrected ghola of Duncan
Exactly.
It can be done. Canon says that spice can both speed up and slow down aging. Consider the preacher in Children. Obv Alia should be like 20 at least.
@@RegularRegs indeed, accelerates her to maturity then slows her ageing
yeah I want Jason Momoas Ghola Duncan Idaho/Hayt back also ATJ Alia is aged so Messiah can work
@@JBTriple8 since he is a ghola/clone, he would be younger, I feel

@aracelycalderon3832 yes. Also, I remember the book itself explicitly stating that Paul didn't look like he aged much at all since his ascension.
I’m still not comfortable with turning Jason Mamoa into a nonce 😂
The studio needs to lock down the cast before anouncing a released date.
Do not forget the Cleopatra film!!Though it’s not his next project

I agree because I was thinking around 2028 or 2029 this movie would release
Loved the first two chapters…..the best trilogy since LOTR ……it’s easy to watch over and over…

Andy Serkis should voice the Guild Navigator.
He's great as Gollum and Caesar but would rather have a relatively unknown actor
Definitely Messiah now. Ride the wave of enthusiasm from the fans and the actors!
I don’t think the other books are very cinematic at all unfortunately.
What happened to Rendezvous with Rama? Wasn't that in the mix at one point?
Denis will modify and adapt the age of Aliyah to Taylor Joy real age
You never did a review for Rebel Moon Part 2.
I know you liked it.

Nolan and Villeneuve both doing Nuclear films in the space of a few years is peak cinema :)

Dune; Messiah is my favorite of the entire Frank Herbert original! I am intrigued about how he will portray all the different characters.
Or you just skip the confusion of Alia looking older in a shorter amount time and just actually skip 16-18 years ahead
Problem being paul would be even older and Timothy looks very young
