hi Eric Perez.. how you doing bro , i shared this to Rauls WIFE DIANE,she loved it AND SAID THANKYOU FOR THE LOVELY WORDS YOU SAID ABOUT RAUL, HEARTFELT.......Peace.....DrZ.....XXXX
I saw Santana more than any other band growing up. Raul was one of the congaro’s every concert I attended. His smile was infectious. His “grooves” were undeniable. I saw him one night with just a Conga and Tumba. He “tore it up !”🪘🪘
I was also very much inspired by a Raul. I am from a family of set drummers. For some reason I always noticed the Percussion in between the beat of the drummer. Especially in Motown and I loved Santana and the group War. Not only was role in the excellent player and so musical he was also a great role model being out front on stage with that tremendous smile on his face all the time. He was truly inspirational to me. I am what I would call a semi pro. I am 66 of been playing since I’m a little kid. I’ve played it all different style groups from straightahead jazz to Southern rock and everything else in between. My older brother toured with Dean Martin’s golddiggers and he was there set drummer. He did that for four years. Percussion is the best😅 and thank you for what you do. I really enjoy your tutorials. You continue to inspire me with your enthusiasm and great personality. You are an excellent player as well!
Still get emotional thinking of Raul. Being more of a rocker than Salsa dude, he's the one who inspired me to play congas. Thanks for honoring him with this tutorial.
I share your joy of Raul's performances. The energy he created was immense. He lives on in every conga drum. Thanks for another great lesson. From very rainy Derbyshire...
ABSOLUTELY....i feel the same way . He was the best !!!! i think he started as a drumset drummer....ive learned the same way.....bless you for this..i saw him at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival when Dennis Chambers was with them right after Hurricane Katrina and they brought the spirits down for a visit. Raul sitting up there with the 5 and i remember they played Saja which think has that tumbao on it. People were moving , he was moving molecules and that life giving energy stayed with me for years and still does .
I truly enjoy your conga tutorials, You are well studied and gifted as well. I would just add a bit to Raul's resume. I began congas playing in 1970, for me, at the time, Mongo's 1958-59 recordings of just Cuban folkloric rumba and bata was the bible. One of the mega groups of the early 70's was Malo, a group formed by Carlos Santana's brother Jorge. Arguably one of the baddest latin rock bands of ALL time, with horns. Coke Escavado, Sheila E father was the timbalero, Chester Thompson was the keyboard player, Luis Gasca was the trumpet player, and Raul Rekow was the Congeuro. Malo was responsible for the near riot that almost happened when they fronted the Fania All Stars at Yankee Stadium in 1972. They were that electrifying. Carlos Santana did not discover Raul, in fact, he was the essential, well known driver of Malo's rhythm section. I loved that band and Raul's incredible playing THEN. Listen to Oye Mama, on Malo Dos, and you'll see that Raul was no beginner. I don't know exactly what happened between the 2 bands, because Malo was in the direction of latin rock with a blazing horn section, and more traditional sound, but Carlos took both Raul and Chester Thompson, and that was it for Malo. Thanks again for your great video's Brother.
There is nothing not to like / u have nothing to apologize for/ loved his work/ until I left the Bay Area I went to all of SANTANAS CONCERTS!!! He was awesome!!!! Rip RAUL / thanks for this vid. WILLY CA EXCELSIOR DIST. CITY BY THE BAY 🥁🥁🇺🇸🌹
Hola..you know Vicente Ponciano? He is the Percussionist for Dakila...Great guy👍We are friends..I've spent hours with him..learning(less is more)also..Mike McGoldrick AX player Santana Tribute Band✌
I had a buddy who studied with Raul. (Some of the Santana guys were around the Bay Area here for years.) My buddy said Raul was, not only a great player, but a really nice guy. What you’d expect, right?-a lot of heart.
Eric thank you for paying tribute to my favorite conga player. As you told the story of Raul and his influence on you you , I was taken by how it was the same way I felt about him. As well as how you and I have taken the same experience from his legacy. Thank you for showing such well deserved respect to this man who has touched many of us and our conga playing. Bless you brother. CONGA JACK😎👍
Raul Rekow and myself started playing about the same time ,inspired by the new sounds of rock and latin beats by Santana.Great conga player that fit that band 100%.Great teacher with Armandp Peraza and Oreste Vliato. Thank you for taking the time to break down rhythms for us. I stop playing for over 25yrs and got back by watching your videos ,Its hard to teach an old dog new tricks but i try, Playing out again with funk band. thank you
Fantastic video, I saw Raul play with Santana in Frankfurt Germany in 1978 when I saw station there while in the arms forces. I have his CD Just another day in The Park, with Horacio" El Negro" Hernández, Karl Perazzo, and abunch more. Ja, a true jewl. "A key to the passion behind this music is not what you listen to, but how you listen". This frase appears on his CD.words I take to heart. Lol Eric and God bless you.
love all your videos this one is special to me 😢 thank you for your prayers. ever since. i was diagnosed with cancer your videos and music are. the only thing keeping me sane thank you ❤
Raul is one of my favorite congueros. In all honestly, I appreciate him more than I do Giovanni. I am Puerto Rican and I feel that Raul played with so much feeling and said so much in his playing. I'm a firm believer in less is more. He had groove. I don't know if you have featured Luis Conte in any of your videos. He's another master of groove. I also love Papo Pepin who many have probably never heard of. There are so many great drummers. One dosen't have to play 3 or 5 congas to express feeling. Love you videos. Thanks for what you do.
Victor Rivera thanks Victor... and both Papo and Luis are on the list to cover!!! Both amazing in their own right! And I couldn’t agree with you more about Raül! Loved his style and passion!!
Love this the passion and love you have for RAUL REKOW and his congas and bongos he always said develop your own style Listen to others but be yourself so I did Candido Armando Raul also Karl My favourite players Spend hours years listening on things called vinyl records and tapes practicing had no one to teach me from the area I lived in NZ kiwi 🥝 RAUL touched a lot people like me DEEP As Armando used to say am I right am I right 🪘🪘🪘RIP ❤️💯🪘🪘🪘
Hey, thanks so much for educating me on congas and Raul Rekow!! I am ashamed to admit I never knew of him until you posted this video. I have a bunch of Santana albumsand of course grew up listening to his music, but only recently within the last year got into playing conga drums and percussion instruments! I am much older than you and have been playing guitar and bass guitar in bands all my life! I love your video here and of course will subscribe to your page. Ever since I was a kid I loved conga and percussion but took more to stringed instruments myself! I record my own songs and of course use conga drums on some of my own songs! Thanks again for posting this video. Rest in Peace Raul, you have only begun to live my amazing talented friend!! :)
Ok, ill admit it!! flowers grew around my feet, i cried hard and long when i got a call from a conguero in Brooklyn that he had passed.....MR. Rekow made me believe that you can play congas when so many try to convince you its not achievable..it moved my heart to see him kiss Giovanni Hidalgo.
Thank you for your wonderful words and memories of Raul Rekow, my favorite conguero. He, and Santana, are why I wanted to play congas. I cried when I heard of his passing, and the tears fell listening to your tribute to him here. His joy of playing was infectious, enough so that this old man has devoted himself to learning and playing this wonderful instrument. I am headed to the House of Blues in January 2020 to see Santana, my only regret being that I never saw Raul play live. Peace and Love to you, Eric.
Eric I totally love Raul Rekow & he has inspired me also!! I am a self taught bongo conga drummer that does both traditional & freestyle playing made fun of alot in school for my freestyle bongo conga drumming when it is just me & they just loved being mean over it!! We all have our own style of playing bongos & congas & I will forever love what I do!!
R.I.P. Raul. Thanks for sharing this! There is a video on the Tube, here, of Raul and John Santos doing a clinic together. John credits Raul with sharing the conga drum with more people, on more continents, than any other player. That is quite a compliment!
You mentioned Rekow said "get to the point" with your solos. I just re-listened to your piece "soul-o-me" and that's exactly what you did. Love your channel. Love your compassion. Also, side-note, just got some New heads from Manito. Wow! Love them. Nice on the hands too. I told them The Great Eric Perez sent me. Cheers to you.
Eric ,what a nice introduction and biography of the late Raul Rekow , watching him in person performing it was magical, thanks man . Enjoy very much the way you explained this technic , interesting . Thanks Eric saludos God bless
Love you videos my brother especially on Raul Rekow. You said it well ,a pioneer in latin rock. Raul inspired countless of conquerors and made such an impact in conga world, especially in the Chicano latino community including myself. That sound that he got from those congas and his style is second to none. Raul was a dear friend of mine as well as Karl. Those two were hand in glove. The dynamic dual. I would go to Santana concerts just to see the lineup Raul & Karl and at times when Raul wasn't there I was bummed. Our group has opened for Santana a few times, Raul & Karl were the cooliest and always welcoming. Raul is truly missed. Keep doing what you're doing you are also in inspiration and love what you do. I know you're a believer and so am I. Hopefully someday we can chat. I live in los Angeles.. Where you located? God bless you my brother......Sal Rodriguez......
I was also inspired by Rekow, the percussion in "Sacred Fire: Live in South America" is one of the first things that made me appreciate the congas, it's only 25 years later that I got the drum, but he is a huge part of why I'm doing it. Thanks for this vid !
Thank you Eric. Have to say how grateful I am for your service to breaking down each pattern! Your overhead shot is so needed to better aid the tutorial. Love the bios you give on each percussionist. You give much respect to the great players. I have seen Raul with many combinations... my favorite was Raul, Karl with Rodney Holmes and Santana
I think Raul was the first Conguero I saw live when I was 8. His playing influenced my decision to dedicate myself to the conga.🧙🏼♂️You brought up something very important regarding his start and yours. We had to go out and find the drum and those chosen few that new how to make it talk. It gives those people a deeper understanding of this instrument. Keep up your hard work Big Dawg!
Eric thank you so much for sharing this. I finally got it today. The secret sauce is the key. I found what I believe to be a better starting point for me in terms of jumping right into the feel. You are a great teacher and inspiration to me and I am, sure many others!.
I was heavily influenced by Raul especially in my early years of studying. His music and playing inspired me in all kinds of ways. I always had a dream of meeting him and one day, purely by chance I did. Raul was a humble man and he was very encouraging to me as a fellow percussionist. RIP Raul Rekow.
I've always said Rekow had one of the more fun tumbao's!! I can tell this tumbao holds a place in your heart bruddah... It showed in your face and flow more than most of the tumbaos you have shared w us. Great stuff as always bruddah! You made me fall in love w Rekow's style all over again man
Raúlera uma pessoa muito legal. Tive o prazer de estar com ele algumas vezes. O conheci no México e depois tive com ele no Brasil. Que Deus o tenha em um bom lugar junto dele.
My Man, Raul was my dude I'm so appreciative to have you share this one for us to have in our repertoire. It was my hope that I would one day catch Santana in rotation at the Hard Rock in Vegas. When I found out he was sick and passed that crushed me. He is one of my top 3 Mongo, Raul, and Ray Berretto.I just knew I had more time to catch him in concert, but GOD had different plans. it will be an honor to work this groove in my arsenal to pay tribute to one of my inspirations. It is also a wonderful story about how he became the percussionist for Santana.... Blessings to ya!
Hi Eric love your channel! This is awesome! Thanks for sharing your amazing skills! The best teacher on RUclips for bongos & congas out there I mean it oh yeah I mean this! I am a self taught conga bongo player & love creating real bongo conga techniques & make my own up. Yeah crazy but I love it & wished I found your channel sooner it is the best!
Hey Eric a very heartfelt Video on our friend from the Mission District. Been planning to buy a set a congas. LP has Raul Rekow set of congas May buy them as a remember to this great Congero.. thanks so much brother.. keep up the great work.👍🏼
Greetings Eric, Wonderful! I was hoping you would do the late, great RaulRrekow, one of my all-time favourites and a thoroughly decent a nd lovely person. You are spot on in saying that he TRULY loved what he did.And he did it with conviction, love, humour and a smile. Saw him many times with Santana that provide so many happy memories. If you have not seen it may I recommend the Berlin concert from the 1987 FREEDOM tour. Raul was awesome and what is particularly moving is that Armando is there too and after Raul's solo he is clapping and smiling and Raul looks across to him as if to say "you're the best but I a'int too far behind." Magical stuff. Many thanks indeed for covering his tumbao. Blair.
¡ Rekowmanía! Que padre vídeo , Muchas felicidades :) Se extraña al gran Raul ... Tenía una luz enorme enorme... Gracias por compartir este vídeo de tanta utilidad ! Saludos desde México !
Hi Eric. Thank you for this great Video. And the wonderful and clean playing.Having been inspired by Raúl Rekow and his playing and starting learning "from him" I really appreciate your comments!I was a huge fan of the Santana period from the end of the 70ies, especially the way they played at the Live captures on "Moonflower". For me the percussion section with Chepito Areas, Raúl Rekow, Armando Peraza and Graham Lear was a wonderful team. Especially Chepito Areas, who might have come not far from your homeland, I think was an invaluable enrichment for the whole Santana sound and especially for the rhythmical structure of the songs! Which, in my opinion, never reached that level the deep rooting in afro cuban rhythmic in later times. Thank you again for your great videos and playing! Saludos desde Alemania!
Hey Eric , yes my first love for congas was trying to learn from Santana, long before I ever got to hear tumbado in Latin style. I also see the same rumba Santana rythme that comes from Cachao
Thanks for break down the rhythm, bro... I started to love Conga is from Raul Rekow who played in the Santana & Mana MV “Corazon Espinado”, from there I started to explore about the Conga... Until now, my preferences are Poncho Sanchez, Paoli Mejias, Armando Peraza, Mongo Santamaria, Steve Thornton & last but not least, Raul Rekow...
Really awesome vid on Raul Rekow, very informative and always your breakdowns on patterns perfectly done. Raul was part of a killer percussion team, Santana has Armando Peraza who Raul eventually replaced after he retired. Orestes Vilato in Timbales, then Karl replaced him. But at one point in the 70's he had them all together so you can imagine how bad ass all of them together will sound! Anyway keep up the great work Bro!
Ok, took me a bit but I finally got it 😄.. Can really feel the groove once it's in 👍🏻. I keep wanting you to teach the grooves longer and at a steadier pace so I can jam with you. Much respect to you bro for the education on so many amazing Congueros. More power to ya ✌🏼
One more thing, it felt strange at first cause it wasn't fitting with the other Tumbao's? I was starting with slap on the Quinto as you showed it. To me it always feels better playing on the salidor first, which you do do but right at the end you start on the Quinto which made it confusing. Is 1 (being the slap) on the Quinto or the Salidor? Thanks bro, love your work
Hey, man, love your videos. Raul Rekow was one of the greatest and I learned a lot from this video. I have also definitely have improved a great deal, so thank you for that! I do have a question... All great players and even you instruct, to lead with your left hand....I lead in with my right. My right hand is my dominant hand and I do everything with my right. I find it hard, even with this tumbao, to lead in with my left hand. I get a good rhythm going but, it's my right hand. Any suggestions?
great vid again ! Raul Rekow is one of the g.o.a.t. ...!concerning his tumbao and your lesson : it actually feels/sounds to me that it should start on the conga (drum on your left) ..feels like the 1 is over there ..or did i get it all wrong ?
Saludos Compay!! - another excelente tutorial, full of detailed analisys and lovingly presented. I have but "UN" request. Is it possible to add the clave to the presentation. So that there is no question/ambiguity on how the pattern falls on either side of the clave. Also, do you have notation (pdf). Si, si, ya lo se; estoy pidiendo mucho - no - ESTOY PIDIENDO DEMASIADO !!!
Thanks once again I have found that A lot of the rhythms can be played with a swing feel as well it's like building up a tool box of rhythm that you could do different gigs with have you thought about getting into some riffs on bongo es etc and some bata drum stuff on 4 cangas I have been writing a lot of your stuff down and working my way through it could you please play the rhythms a little bit more slowly to make it more easy to write it down I know that it might make some people get board but I think it would help them learn more in the long term maby you could put all this great stuff into a book with a couple of cds to go with it thank you VERY much for sharing your special way of teaching with the world hope you get the good carma you so richly deserve God bless and by for now lol
hi Eric Perez.. how you doing bro , i shared this to Rauls WIFE DIANE,she loved it AND SAID THANKYOU FOR THE LOVELY WORDS YOU SAID ABOUT RAUL, HEARTFELT.......Peace.....DrZ.....XXXX

Eric thank you so much for sharing this. I finally got it today. The secret sauce is the key. I found what I believe to be a better starting point for me in terms of jumping right into the feel. You are a great teacher and inspiration to me and I am, sure many others!.
Rest in peace, Raul. Great tutorial, EP. Those Meinls sound stellar.
Great video! R.I.P., Raul.
Thanks for doing tutorials on crossover guys with chops.
J’adorais Raul Rekow. Découvert en 1988. Très triste quand il disparu.
Much respect to you Sir! Very well explained!!!
Awesome my Brother. Thank you for taking your time to share with us. God Bless
Thank you!
I've always said Rekow had one of the more fun tumbao's!! I can tell this tumbao holds a place in your heart bruddah... It showed in your face and flow more than most of the tumbaos you have shared w us. Great stuff as always bruddah! You made me fall in love w Rekow's style all over again man
Thanks for recognizing that man!
I seen several of his videos and he was impressive; you shared a Good story of Raul Rekow...
Raúlera uma pessoa muito legal. Tive o prazer de estar com ele algumas vezes. O conheci no México e depois tive com ele no Brasil. Que Deus o tenha em um bom lugar junto dele.
Thank you brother...... he inspired many.
Blair.
Blair MacEwan Crosbie thank you!!! Long Live Raül!!!
Loving it! I don't remember a lot because of a stroke. but I remember that! Thank you!
Love me some Raul w/ Santana!
¡ Rekowmanía!

Saludos desde México !
U re talking about a "Smiling God'.......my respect Bro!!! Appreciate it a lot...❤
Great job Eric on Raul Rekow and his fabulous tumbao! love your channel!
Rumba columbia rhythm. Excellent video
Is that the name of this Rhythm. I have heard similar variations.
I thought rumba columbia was a 6/8 rhythm

Gracias hermano. Muy util para nosotros!
Hey Eric , yes my first love for congas was trying to learn from Santana, long before I ever got to hear tumbado in Latin style. I also see the same rumba Santana rythme that comes from Cachao
Delicious & melodico! Gracias por sharing.
Those mule skins on the Kaicheros sound great
Awesome Tumbao.. Gracias
Gracias!
I’m a Guitar Player and Carlos Santana is my guitar idol and I Raul played a mean conga machine! You should do a cover of one of Carlos songs
Eric !!!
Just recently discovered you man and you are the conga God! You are awesome Thank you
Beautiful.
I did not know that he has a Filipino background…I miss him play, RIP Raul Rekow…❤
Awesome. I'm speechless. Thank you.
Adam Rek glad you liked it!
Good playing
Thanks for break down the rhythm, bro...
I started to love Conga is from Raul Rekow who played in the Santana & Mana MV “Corazon Espinado”, from there I started to explore about the Conga...
Until now, my preferences are Poncho Sanchez, Paoli Mejias, Armando Peraza, Mongo Santamaria, Steve Thornton & last but not least, Raul Rekow...
Yessss!!! Thank you!
Cool man love it. Going to check it out.
Raul Rico!
Raul Rekow, Karl Perazzo and Dave Grohl are my inspiration on Drums and Percussion.
I have to admit... As anew subscriber and new to congas, I felt welcome by you intro. Lol
Wooooo Awesome!!! And thanks for Subscribing
Broooo...very nice breakdown.. self taught.. like a sponge bro...La Escuela de La Calle...Just like me bro...all the BEST
La Calle es lo que es papa!
Awesome 😎
So this means that the tumba plays on the 2nd and 4th? Love this!
Buenísimo! 👌
Thanks bro, love your work
About time Eric! Loved Raul, his passion always came through....Liked Your smiling while playing, very Rekow like...lol
RIP Raulito ----
great on the SAPO CD
MMMAAAAANNNNN¡¡¡¡ You are the man¡¡¡¡ Eric, what tuning and which is the size of your congas in this video? Saludos¡¡¡
great vid again ! Raul Rekow is one of the g.o.a.t. ...!concerning his tumbao and your lesson : it actually feels/sounds to me that it should start on the conga (drum on your left) ..feels like the 1 is over there ..or did i get it all wrong ?
Nope! You're absolutely right! Thanks!
heART beat gracias!
I still see comments about Raul in Santana's videos on how much Mario Lopez looks like him. RIP.
Thanks once again I have found that A lot of the rhythms can be played with a swing feel as well it's like building up a tool box of rhythm that you could do different gigs with have you thought about getting into some riffs on bongo es etc and some bata drum stuff on 4 cangas I have been writing a lot of your stuff down and working my way through it could you please play the rhythms a little bit more slowly to make it more easy to write it down I know that it might make some people get board but I think it would help them learn more in the long term maby you could put all this great stuff into a book with a couple of cds to go with it thank you VERY much for sharing your special way of teaching with the world hope you get the good carma you so richly deserve God bless and by for now lol
you the best
