I was at this event, and Arlo did not disappoint. The crowd hung on to his every word. What a storyteller. It was his 60th birthday too, and they brought a cake onstage for him. My brother-in-law baked it. I was near the front and have a photo from the same angle. I never knew this video existed!
Psychedelic Relic.....an extraodinary gentleman who grew up in a world of other extraordinary musicians.....love his story's...would love to trip with the man.....thank you Arlo......
Thanks for sharing this. Each time I want an Arlo fix I search for these hilarious stories. Arlo is a gem - I hope I will have the chance to see him live one day. Thanks again. Peace, love and blessings
I am so happy I just stumbled over this tonight. Arlo at his finest. I'm so lucky to have seen him play a few times now. Bummed that I missed the last go round of the Alice's Restaurant tour.
Andrew Moizer I was fortunate to work backstage and get to be the only one to handle his guitars. I am always thrilled when I find out an idol is just as nice in person as they are talented
I've been singing Alice's Restaurant since I was a (young) teenager. I guess Dad heard it, and managed to get a copy of the record early on (apparently he went to a record shop asking for it. They didn't have it, but a rep happened to be there and said "I have it out in the van!".) Arlo played a benefit for the Ottawa Folk Festival in the 90's (IIRC), so we had to go. In the middle of the concert he was tuning his guitar and said "I need to get this right, I"m not going to have a chance to do it for a while" (or something like that). Then he launched into Alice's Restaurant and my life goal of singing it with Arlo came true (he didn't know I was singing I expect). I thought he wasn't doing AR, so it was such a total surprise. Our two boys were quite young at the time, but we took them. Jeremy was very young and came down with the flu as we were going out. At the concert, he had to go into the washroom. He was old enough he wouldn't go into the ladies with my wife, so went into the mens alone, and was in there a long time. Susan was outside, waiting for him to come out. Arlo came along, went in and came out. Susan asked if he'd seen a young boy in there. Arlo said "yup, he ain't doing so good. He's in there puking his guts out!" Unfortunately the boys slept through the show, but it was a highlight for me. Anyway, this is a long way of saying thanks for posting this. For me, the top of my music list is Arlo Guthrie and Led Zep.
I went to an outdoor weekend concert in NZ in the early 80s and I remember that we broke down along the way. We got picked up and made it to the concert... I would give anything to remember what I did after that 🤣🎶🎸💚☮
Arlo was always good for a crazy story. Of course the craziest story of all was Alice's Restaurant, but that wasn't the name of the restaurant, just the name of the song. That's why he called it Alice's Restaurant.
Right!! the real name of the restaurant was The Back Room. But..it was owned by Alice..so it was indeed Alice's Restaurant. My brother used to hang out there..sometimes with Arlo (I was too young). And..you could "get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant". My brother sometimes came home looking like Arlo looked..that night at Woodstock.
Great story! I've been looking forever for his story about he and Hendrix both having been at Woodstock, and imagining if he had taken a style more like Hendrix. Then he sang the funniest cover of "All Along the Watchtower" I never knew I wanted to hear. (If anyone knows where I can find it, please reply.)

If this was 2009, he would have been 62, as he was 22 at Woodstock. Born 1947
