Nice discussion. I would love to see some example videos walking through the rules step by step. Like, "Let's make a PC!" or "Let's run a combat!" etc. Or, dare I ask, "Let's have a Heroquest!" 😄
Great and Helpful video. Having run a few Runequest combats now in our stream I can say that without buffing up before hand combat is likely to be very short and very deadly.
Love RQ, BRP, Cthulhu and TDM's Mythras stuff. I'd never start a bunch of new players whether new to the hobby, or having moved over from the "other" game without running a primer session, mainly focusing on combat. Mainly to suggest and explain options they may not otherwise consider viable in a TTRPG. I generally begin such a session with something along the lines of "Remember... this NOT a war of "Health Bar" attrition!"
He keeps getting asked the simple, basic questions and keeps going off on these esoteric tangents. "Please explain the strike rank system." "Well, it's honorable to bang your sword against your shield, but it's dishonorable to ambush."
Hit locations.... 1 to 19.9999999 left leg.... oh and the other bit.. Right Leg. Giving Players a +2D6 damage in a first combat is an idea.... This is a useful video, thanks for the good work... worth 2 Magic Points in my book for the Arch God Learner himself. May Darkness ⚫️ protect us from Argrath.
Hey, strike rank rules really suck. Its too complicated. If moving is sr 1 for 3 meters and enemy 1 and hero 1 moves both 3 meters, who moves first? What if hero plans in planing fase to move to strike enemy 1, but enemy 1 moves another direction, what then? Hero dont reach to hit enemy 1, because they both move 3 meters? And the hero 1 planed to love only 3 meters in planing face (in start of the combat round).what if the enemy just plan to run more if its allowed, then the hero wont never catch him and get to hit enemy whit his melee weapon. OR if they enemy and hero planned to move 6 meters towards each other using strike rank 2, they meet after they run 3 meters, do they get 1 strike rank back? This planing face telling to gm what they are going to do is confuse me so much, why to tell gm? Why they cant move 3metres at strike rank at a time, like i move in sr1 3metres, then when all moved 3metres or not comes sr 2, then people start moving those who will.
Was this video supposed to explain how combat in runequest works? Because unless I've missed something, I still have no idea. Sometimes the in-depth experts are the worst at explaining the basics. They are way past in their minds where a new player needs to be to understand the system itself.
If this video is meant to encourage new players…it’s not achieving that. Don’t answer any questions properly, talk about what highly experienced players do - and then talk total contradictions. “Ambushes are dishonourable” …. “Launch a load of javelins and battle magic, and if it doesn’t work, there’s no shame in running away”. Great.
An important rule:
NEVER kill a player!
You may kill a player's character, but never kill the player.
DOh! That’s where I went wrong.

It’s often short and deadly with buffs 😂
I've been playing RQ 2nd ed, since 81. Love you Chaosium! RIP Greg Stafford.

More RQ content please! Is The White Bull campaign ever coming back?
Just how much more combat-capable are Rune Lords compared to Rune Priests?
