    I know that ppl like Sydney plant guy who is basically known for his moss poles has said that since the pole is an extension of the pot he worries less about root rot in the pot as the plants get a good root system in the pole. I'm sure he does dump off excess water but he's definitely said that he doesn't water the pot itself.
    I like the plastic poles best but I forget to water them AND the pot 🤣 no clue why since I'll water everything around it... I have a bamboo stake with my esqueleto on it and I'm about 2-3 leaves from needing to do a chop. The bottom leaves are so tiny compared to the top so IME plants growing vertically encourages sizing up more so than the moss pole and the extra roots...
    Congrats again on 100k Jeff! You deserve it! You're so relatable to me, I would think to a lot of Canadians as well, with the cold winters, windowless basements that we use as living space and the desire to have living things in our homes BC of how bleh it is outside for so much of the year. You've brought your basement to life by filling it with beautiful living things and that's helped me to be confident and trust artificial lighting with everything from cacti to alocasias... Never in my life did I think I would have a cactus, actively growing, IN THE BASEMENT, in winter no less! Had I never found your channel I definitely wouldn't have tried half the plants I have BC many are only shown growing in much warmer zones than us, with much larger windows and sometimes winters that match our summer temps! 🎈🎉💞🥳

    Congratulations Jeff on 100K! 🎉 Love this beginner video on moss pole care. My one moss pole is a double of hardware cloth (wire open squares) with two (2) Monstera plants that wind around. Heavy plastic rod supports pole.. It’s loaded with roots inside and out.. is watered per conditions, lately gets full soak top to bottom because of root load. It’s a beast of roots lol. There is a ceiling fan.. it can get hot at the window (or cold) and is directly beneath an Aglex 100 light. I use sprayer to moisten outside to break hydrophobia (sometimes just hit it with some moisture in between or when I can’t water at that time) and bottles that always have a little something in it-Cal Nitrate, Cal Mag, fertilizer.. replaced moss late last winter, hoping to get a full 18 mos. out of it this time. The quality of moss really matters. The open pole square release humidity into the air, and the roots have lots of air. Yes, gets watered more often.. Your collection looks so healthy and lush! Thanks for all the great videos-hoping my experience will be of help to someone.. I take so much from your adventures.. trying to give back something, even if it’s “wrong.” -Bett 😁

    I let mine completely dry out b4 I water again. I know generally how much they need because I’ve had them for 6 to 8 months. But, if ever in doubt say after an extension, I just keep an eye on the pole at the soil line. When the water reaches the soil line I pull the bottle off & water will continue to drain into the pot.
    Also Jeff, if you make those 3 holes a little smaller it’ll drain slower & fully saturate the moss.

    I have been struggling with moss poles for a while and found the following solution that I hope can help further:
    - for not getting the potted substrate wet every pole watering, I worked out how much I should fill the bottle.
    - my water bottles are drilled with 5 holes, which expel water pretty quickly. But some poles I have tend to spurt water everywhere. For those I have a one hole bottle which will trickle the water a lot slower, but it will thoroughly soak the moss.

    Make sure the water only goes 3/4 down the pole when the water bottle goes empty. The rest of the pole will suck up water from the over-saturated top 3/4 portion in the next half hour, so it will be evenly wet and not over saturated. If you water all the way down the pole then the pot will get a heavy dose of water which is at worst death to the plant and at least an inconvenience. You should be watering the pot and pole separately to avoid rot in the pot. I use a pump sprayer and make a cavity in the front of the pole at the very top and stick the sprayer in it and saturate the moss with as much water that I know will stop at the pot (important part). Takes not even 1 minute for a 3 foot pole to dump a bunch of water into that hole then capillary action takes over. No scattered bottles everywhere and no mess filling those bottles every few days.

      @@EverythingPlants Your welcome! Yes I have seen many different techniques too like Wildfern's plastic cup with holes. Vertical height is limited for me and my poles are tucked away so a pump spray in a large cavity is the least annoying lol Loving your content by the way. Good stuff!

    Hi Jeff, thanks for your videos. I find that sometimes well a lot of times my moss pulls, especially when they’re small dry out before the soil in the pot dry out even though the soil in the pot is very chunky and in terra-cotta the moss pole dries out a lot quicker, so it’s tricky just to water the moss pole and not let it drip down into the pot.

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  3 дня назад

      I agree. It can be tricky to water the Moss Pole and not the soil

    One thing I’ve noticed when I use a nutrient rich liquid in my bottle is that is significantly slows the flow of water into the moss. If I use plain water it flows much quicker.

    Hi Jeff, thanks for this video it is very timely. I typically grow in Leca but wanted to try my El Choco Red and Silversword on a Moss Pole. I planted them in Molly's Aroid Mix and a moss pole. I am now battling Fungus Gnats. Not sure if they came in the Aroid mix or the Moss. How do you work around this as you have the same set up. I am feeling defeated already and am just getting started :) Any input is appreciated.

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  День назад

      Most likely from the moss. I would let the moss dry out before watering it again and eventually the gnats will disappear. They breed in moist moss and soils.
