    Your tutorials are very helpful and inspirational. I noticed that a lot of JRPG battle themes follow the build up - intro - melody - breakdown structure, although there is a lot of different ways each section is tackled. For example, the breakdown in Final Fantasy 7's battle theme was the best part of the song. Anyway, thanks for making this.

      BubblyCrash You are absolutely right. I can't believe I forgot about FF7's legendary breakdown. That is the part of the song that really struck gold for every player. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us BubblyCrash. Maybe when I get a bit better at breakdowns I will like them more :p

    dude. I love your work. finally I have someone who can make video tutorial on fl studio based off games! ive been waiting for this!! but I'm slightly puzzled. I've been watching some of your tutorials, and most of them jump right in to a full play-list with all these ready beats and songs. sure its nice you're explaining how you made the beats, but as a beginner I feel lost to how you FL studio DAW users find these instruments, and which effects you apply to achieve those sounds. it always feels as if though you all know which instrument and which effect to get to fit all those situations without stumbling for an hour and saying "screw it. il use this instead. sounds rad."just some enlightening reply explaining how you're able to achieve those sounds would be very helpful!kind regards, keep up the amazing work!

  • @FulminisIctus
    @FulminisIctus 9 лет назад +1

    This is a really nice tutorial! I hope you don't mind if I give you some feedback on it. ^^
    I really liked how you explained things. It was fluid and easy to understand. Another thing which I liked were the e-guitars. I wish I had such a good VST like you. ;_; Those sounded realistic and made the song sound pretty good. I also really liked the bells in the intro and how the melody switched from the guitar to them and back. Another thing which I really liked about this composition is the contrast which you created with the breakdown. A more melodic part within a battle theme makes the piece a lot more varied. This is actually a thing which I see quite often in battle themes from modern JRPGs. I'm not quite sure about the older ones though because they were a lot shorter. I also really like the polyphony between the guitar and the brass in this part.
    All in all this is a great composition in my opinion. But there are still some things which I don't really agree with.
    This composition wasn't driven forward as much as in most other great battle themes. I really liked "Storm" from EO4 for example because it made me feel like doing stuff and it motivated me to defeat the enemy. This composition though is rather "chilled" in comparison. One factor which made me like "Storm" was probably because of the steady rhythm which was always in the background (except in the brake). Same would apply to Bravely Defaults' Battle Theme where the rhythmic part is played by the trumpet which is also the melody instrument.
    Another factor would be the melody which wasn't really that strong in this piece. Most Battle Themes I know have a really strong melody which drives the action further. I have to admit that Yuzo Koshiros' Battle Themes aren't that melodic actually but those were actually the ones which I enjoyed the least so I guess it depends on what style you prefer.
    Last but not least is a more technical thing. You should spread the strings (spicatto) more. This is a tip which I got some time ago and it does sound a lot better than just cramping them in only the interval of a fifth. Instead of the chord CEG you could spread them out to play ECG or EGC (if you don't want the range to be too big).
    At least that's my opinion and I could be totally wrong on some things. I'd really like to hear from you if you disagree with something so I can perhaps learn something new as well.

    • @Schematist
      @Schematist  9 лет назад

      Fulminis Ictus Thank you for the critical insight Fulminis! Storm is definitely one of my favorites from EO4 as well. I am going to take this advice to heart when I finish the final product. I think I could definitely bring out the brass a lot more and make them a bit more punchy. It was really hard for me to make a melody that didn't get drowned out by the guitars, So I think all I can do is bring the trumpets forward a bit more to give more of an actiony feeling. Yuzo definitely has proved that not all battle themes have to be heavy on the melody, which is something that is pretty interesting to think about. There really is no correct method which is why I love this. I will try experimenting changing the spicatto strings a bit to see if I can get something a bit more creative! Thanks for the input Bossman!

    • @FulminisIctus
      @FulminisIctus 9 лет назад +1

      ***** I agree that the battle themes don't necessarily have to follow the norm. Actually in my opinion how the soundtrack of a video game should be should depend on the game itself and not on what other composers usually compose for this kind of situation. While your track doesn't sound quite like the usual JRPG Battle Themes (at least in my opinion) because it's more calm than the norm it could still fit quite well to an JRPG where the battles don't have to be so action packed. I remember someone who composed a rather calm battle theme and got criticized for it by some people because it didn't sound like a normal battle theme but it still seemed to fit to this game quite well (wish I could remember who it was ;_;).

    • @Schematist
      @Schematist  9 лет назад

      Fulminis Ictus I couldn't agree more with you! Sometimes people look at music as a completely separate from gameplay, but I think they go hand in hand. Someone told me you aren't supposed to hear the music, but rather feel the music. This might be one of the reasons I love the Last of Us OST so much. Even though it was really subtle, it heightened the emotions of the game and made it really hit home for me.

    Cool song, but there's one big difference between this and Yuzo Koshiro's Etrian Odyssey music: The melody. In almost every single Etrian track there's a really prominent melody instrument, and you "just" have the fairly _subtle_ guitar. That's not to say yours is bad, by no means. Koshiro just really emphasizes the melody :)

    Nicely done. Question, with the loop, you would export the intro after the bridge back to the part before the intro at the beginning right?

    • @Schematist
      @Schematist  9 лет назад +1

      3ny6maticJ0ka You know there are a few ways to loop, so far exporting as an OGG file did the job for me as long as I told FL Studio to "wrap remainder". your method might work as well and I think it is worth trying at least once. If I find anything new out I will let you know.

    Hey there! I just found your videos while searching about how to make game music. I know NOTHING about making music. I want to make a game in the future, and I wanna do it pretty much all by myself. That includes coding, creating the world, artwork and of course the music. I have some music taste, especially electronic and atmospheric. I want to make simple 16bit music for the game. Do I need to take courses? I don't have much time for that because I'll be studying software engineering this year. And will it help me to get a keyboard or launchpad? Which one will help most? I'm willing to spend money on the best one but I don't wanna get an expensive thing that won't make any difference for a beginner. I'll be so happy if you answer my questions, you'll help me achieve my dreams ^^ keep up the good work!

    • @Schematist
      @Schematist  8 лет назад +1

      +Spesifik Brush Thanks for tuning in Spesifik! Glad to hear you are interested in making a game! The solo path is hard, but it can be done :). The good news is you don't HAVE to take courses. It can certainly help, but it is not at all mandatory. If you have an ear for music production and an idea for the structure of a song then you are off to a grand start. I think studying software engineering is the perfect move for you right now. Music can be self taught, but it does take practice. I can't stress this enough. Listen to music tracks from games that you really love and try to break everything down. Examine every instrument and the purpose of each and try to mimic that style. In time you will grow as a musician and carve a nice workflow for yourself. I would invest in a midi keyboard or a regular keyboard that has a midi output/input with it. Many audio workstations use the piano layout for compositions, so having experience with a piano can shave down a lot of time. You don't have to get something super expensive either. I started with the Yamaha YPG- 235 then M Audio Oxygen, then finally the KorgX50. Try not to get overwhelmed or set the bar too high for your first few projects though. I'm here if you have any other questions! Cheers!

    • @pandaengine
      @pandaengine 8 лет назад +1

      Thanks so much for the quick and awesome reply! I'll search for those keyboards. So then music is like drawing. I kinda self-taught myself drawing, I'm still an amateur though. I like drawing as well, honestly I like all kinds of art. I hope my passion will grow stronger. Thanks so much again. Your words boosted my hopes and dreams ^^

    • @Schematist
      @Schematist  8 лет назад +1

      +Spesifik Brush It is very similar to drawing! I used to draw a while back and I followed similar methods when I did that too. Looking at my favorite artist, practicing, and learning the fundamentals. Music just had the bigger grip on my life hahaha! Glad I could be of some help! keep me updated!

    Making another run through of your videos to get used to making music for games in fl studio lol. I've recently started to get into JRPGs like final fantasy, and was curious what other ones you would recommend?

    • @Schematist
      @Schematist  8 лет назад

      I really loved dragon quest 8 and I would strongly recommend playing Persona 3 or Persona 4. They are JRPG masterpieces. I know that Persona V is on the horizon, but you should definitely play one of the earlier titles. Star Ocean is another safe bet in my humble opinion, even though it gets mixed reviews. However, if you want a sure title that you will love, look at Tales of Vesperia

    I'm gonna be honest, and this is just my opinion. Your song is great, but I think for a normal battle theme it is just too energetic. Of course in a JRPG, you expect to hear the normal battle theme a lot, more than any other song. And it gets exhausting listening to a song that feels like it is trying to keep you in a constant state of excitement, which isn't going to happen. I believe this is why most battle themes are a bit slower paced, but not so boring that you fall asleep. The majority of JRPG themes are this way, listen to about any Final Fantasy enemy theme and you'll see it. Personally, this feels more like a boss song.

      @Schematist  9 лет назад +1

      DeathThePlague Thanks for chiming in here DeathThePlague. You raise a lot of good points! What came to mind was FFX and FFIX. It is as you said the random encounter themes were not at all too fast paced. I think there are a couple of things that can influence the song style though. Things such as gameplay and artstyle. Now that you mention it, I can see this project working more for an action JRPG, but that is really the fun part because there have been turn based RPG's that are really energetic and there are some that are more thought provoking. Deciding when to use the style that fits best is the fun part of this process! Thanks for chatting friend, love the insight!

    • @ados1280
      @ados1280 9 лет назад +1

      ***** No problem. It really does depend most on what you are going for in the game. I think I'm saying that the most successful RPGs don't have a total panic or rave party or whatever, when a battle pops up.
      Anyway, I also meant to comment about how, my main problem with FL Studio is that I don't really have any good instruments to make my songs, and I'm glad you are telling us what your stuff is. Much appreciated! Are there any other plug-ins that you can recommend off the top of your head?

    • @Schematist
      @Schematist  9 лет назад

      DeathThePlague I agree 100%! As for plugins.... even though I don't have it yet, I have heard great things about Sylenth. But I really do love zebra. I have been using it for a while and I have no complaints. I would strongly recommend picking Kontakt though. Kontakt has a generous combination of orchestral and synth instruments to really kickstart your creative process. not only that, but a lot of fantastic libraries can only be used in the kontakt player.

    • @Schematist
      @Schematist  9 лет назад

      I'll add it to the list! It will mostly depend a lot on the personality of the character though. It won't be a universal rule, but your instrument choices will really depend on the characters traits. I think you would even be able to tackle that without a walkthrough ;)

    how do you know what instruments to use, and how many should you use?

    • @Schematist
      @Schematist  5 лет назад

      That really depends on you completely and what type of track you want to create. You can complete a track from beginning to end only using one instrument if you wanted. It is just how you prefer to use them. I'd imagine a decent battle theme can be made using as little as 3-5 instruments :)

    • @Schematist
      @Schematist  7 лет назад

      The demo version is free, but the full version is not. It would depend on which bundle you buy. It could range from $100 USD to $300 and up.

      The biggest thing is you can't save and continue your projects. Once you close the program you have to start all over again and creating tracks can take hours, so not having a save option is awful.
