1972. Big Bumpers and emissions hadn't kicked in. But car design was in a siblime state. You had the Ferrari Daytona, Lamborghini Muira, BMW 3.0csi and 2002tii, Citroen SM and too many others to mention. To be sure there are many beautiful cars from the 1960's also, but 1972 was a peak year. By the mid-70's, regulations were strangling cars. They eventually recovered, after a fashion, but were never as beautiful or unrestrained again.

I respectfully disagree. Cars back then got you WAY less power for the money. If you wanted to do 0-60 in the 5-second range, you needed to be a baller that could afford a Porsche 911. Today? You can do it with a base Mustang that's considerably more reliable and gets 30mpg. A new Mazda Miata is just as quick as the original Shelby GT350.

That’s the best “classic” car year, in terms of Modern cars 1997 is by far the best year, just look at Toyota’s lineup: Mk4 Supra, Celica GT4, Ae111 Levin with a Blacktop 20v 4AGE with factory ITBs, The 2nd Gen Century (ie the V12 Century, the only mass produced Japanese car ever with a V12), The Landcruiser, the majority of the Lexus Lineup…. THIS IS COMING FROM ONE MANUFACTURER!!! 😂😂😂 and nearly every Japanese Manufacturer is doing this as well as the Italians as well as the Germans and Americans (albeit to a lesser extent).

@@griffins750 I would certainly agree that the GT350 is cooler and more special than a Miata. The point I'm trying to make is that modern cars offer so much more power than in the 1970s, and they do so while being far more safe, lightweight, fuel-efficient, and reliable. We are absolutely spoiled nowadays in terms of power and performance, and I'd choose it any day.

06 6 speed Acura TSX owner here. Doug is right the mid-2000s is the sweet spot IMO. Car handles like it's on rails with double wishbones front and rear, you can drive the snot out of it on a twisty back road without dying, crazy reliable, easy to work on/get parts, and it had a simple intuitive interior. Only gripe i have is it's a rattling squeak fest after 220K miles and nearly 20 years. No cars before or after this era really do it for me. I plan to drive it another 10 years or so until i can get a FK8 Type R for under $20K.

I'd argue that 2013 takes it. I'm not at all sure what crap was out then, but it had the P1, 918 Spyder, and LaFerrari. What a pinnacle year for the top dogs of the automotive world. Second pick would be an era I could buy a McLaren F1, 911 GT1, and CLK-GTR. If I could go back further, I'd pick 1964 with the first ever Mustang, Ford GT40, Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, and Ferrari 250 GTO all available at the same time.

Before 95 you slide into malaise and after 05 you slide into reliability issues caused by the new fuel economy and emissions regs.

Doug is more on point than he realizes. In 2004 Mercedes blitzed the horsepower wars. Car & Driver tested their most powerful V12 in their smallest car and did 0-60 in 3.6 seconds. Thats the first year of the Twin Turbo V12 SL600. The 2005 AMG SL65 would've been even quicker but no street tires could keep up with it's 604hp and 738 lbs/ft of torque. But in 2005 the SL65 laid down an 11.9 quarter mile at 123mph. Mercedes' own V8 SLR Mclaren could only match the SL600's 0-60 [3.6sec] and lost to the SL65's 50-70mph [2.3sec] times. What a year to drive, in 2005.
