  • This is a playthrough using Leopold Goenitz in the Arcade (NeoGeo MVS) version of King of Fighters '96. Read on below for more information...
    Goenitz is 2nd and final boss of the game, and he is a non-selectable character in both the MVS and AES versions of it.
    ===== ABOUT GOENITZ =====
    Leopold Goenitz is an integral character of the KOF storyline because he is one of and the head of the 4 Heavenly Kings of Orochi. He has the power to command wind, and is a very powerful character in the storyline. Significant events involving him include:
    ---- Blinding Rugal Bernstein in one eye, and then instructing fellow Orochi members Mature and Vice to watch over Rugal as his secretaries. Later, he ordered the pair to do the same with Iori Yagami.
    ---- Activating the Riot of the Blood in Leona, making her become Orochi Leona which led to the death of her own parents, as well as everyone in her home village.
    ---- Slayed the then-head of the Yata clan and Chizuru's sister, Maki Kagura.
    ---- Attempted to end the heirs of the Kusanagi, Yagami and Yata clan (Kyo, Iori and Chizuru) all at once, but failed.
    ===== GAMEPLAY =====
    In Arcade KOF96 he inflicts generally very high damage... he also does not need his power gauge charged to perform his DMs (except for the SDMs, the powered-up versions of his DMs), meaning that he can do them anytime he wants.
    Control-wise he can be awkward to use, mainly due to the half-circle motions required to perform his Whirlwind Pillars. And you will NOT be able to pull off the Tornado Throw DM with as much ease and consistency as the CPU does, due to it's 2 x half-circle motion. : )
    ===== EXTRA STUFF =====
    At the end of this video I have demonstrated Goenitz's assist "move" You can see this starting around 28:51.
    ===== ADDITIONAL INFORMATION / TRIVIA =====
    ---- When Goenitz is queued on the sidelines (not defeated), if he is used as an Assist, his "strike" is glitched and does not hit the opponent.
    ---- He actually has a 2nd colour palette, despite being an unplayable character.
    ---- He has proper "background inactive" character sprites: reading his book (not defeated); and sitting down (defeated). Animations for these are also there.
    ---- He has a perfect team icon image.
    ---- He has his own ending in the game, providing that Chizuru is not on his team.
    ---- His full title is Goenitz of the Wildly-Blowing Wind.
    ---- He appears in KOF2000 as a Striker for Leona.
    ---- He is an outfit for Nightmare Geese in KOF: Maximum Impact 2.
    ---- He appears in KOF'94 Re-Bout as a statue in Rugal's stage background.
    ---- In the PS1 version of KOF98, he appears at the left of Omega Rugal's stage background. His body is sitting down like as if on a chair, without his head.
    ---- He appears as an exclusive playable character in the PS2 and XBox versions of KOF2002.
    ---- Him and Chizuru can be unofficially "unlocked" through specialist BIOS Dipswitch settings on the NeoGeo MVS and AES versions of the game.
    ---- His name "Goenitz" was inspired by and taken from an alien character in the anime Space Battleship Yamato. His Heavenly King title is a reference to the 1979 opening theme of Cyborg 009.
    ===== ABOUT KOF96 =====
    KOF96 improves on the prequel in most aspects, and the Fixed Team Select feature from 94 and 95 has been discarded. In gameplay, the general damage infliction level has been lowered as well. The game sees the debut of Leona Heidern, Mature and Vice (the latter two as playable characters), as well as the conversion of Geese, Krauser, Mr.Big and Kasumi Todoh into KOF characters.

    So given that both he and Chizuru have their ending sequences in place, I take it SNK planned to make them playable in the MVS/AES versions like they did with the '95 bosses, but then cut them out at the last minute? I don't know if you can look into this but is there a dummied out cheat code or anything like that to make them playable? The delisted PS3 & PSP versions do have the bosses available from the start.

      I am not 100% sure but to my knowledge, you cannot play as them in both the Neo-Geo MVS and AES versions of the game. The only way to do it on the hardware is via the installation of a Universe BIOS chip, where it allows you to enable/disable the Debug dipswitches (for Goenitz and Chizuru, it's dipswitches 1-3). I don't think there are any Action Replay/Game Shark devices for the system either.
      Regarding on them being planned playable, I am not sure... what I do know is that you can play as them both in the Neo-Geo CD version of the game via an input code on the character select screen (I can confirm this because I've done it before on that version), so maybe they gave them endings ready for the Neo-Geo CD version of the game perhaps.

      @@Krizalid99v2 Also in the Saturn/PSX Version, they fixed a glitch in a final cutscene for Sacred Treasures Team. Iori using normal flames to dispose of Gendo Ikar--- I mean, Leopold Goenitz. With active sprites and all, but in KOF Orochi (also KOF: The Orochi Saga) the ending we get, is the glitched one.

      Many, many years ago I bought a MVS cart labeled as "KoF '96: Rainbow Edition", a legit cart with one extra EEPOM chip that had these two bosses selectable (along with an instant filling super bar).
      Seems like up until a few years ago the debug bios trick to enable these is only available when the machine is set to AES mode. There wasn't any way to play them in MVS mode at the time without actually changing the game ROM itself, and there certainly wasn't back when the the game was current 25 years ago.

      The Universal BIOS Rom or the MAME emulator are teh only and best ways to make both of them playable, it's ssimply easier to do just that. And, the KOF Orochi Collection on PS2 make them playable from the start!

    95 gave you an edit team option, only 94 had a fixed team feature. Also, that assist move near the end, it looks like he just jumps in, says "now stop that noise" then jumps back into the background.

    I have played with both Goenitz and Chizuru on the survivor MVS mode, and really, she's more reliable than him to win this mode with ease; I have trouble facing Chizuru as Goenitz...

    Maybe this assist was dummied out since he hasn't any alignment with anybody of the cast. Probably in KOF 98: UM we should see him assisting Chris, Shermie, Yashiro, O.Iori, O.Leona, and Orochi...?
