  • In 1974 Jim developed voice problems so he called on his younger brother Donny to fill in for him for their next tour. Jim had used Donny in the studio to sing on numerous Lettermen recordings so that he could sit in the booth and produce the sessions, so he was a natural replacement. In late 1976 Jim sold his interests in the Lettermen name to Tony Butala and left the group for good. This video shows some of things Jim Pike became involved in with his departure from The Lettermen. After several years of producing other artists Jim's voice began to return and he wanted to sing again, so The REUNION was born. About the last 10-12 Lettermen albums for Capitol were recorded at Producers Workshop which was owned and run by Ed Cobb of the Four Preps singing group. Ed and Jim became close friends and since The Reunion were formed from ex Lettermen and Ed saw how very successful they were he wanted to put the Four Preps back together for a Four Prep reunion. The only problem was, not all of the Preps wanted to come back so Ed asked Jim Pike to become a Prep. Jim said ok as long as it didn't interfere with Reunion. So then Jim was sharing time between Reunion and the Preps. After he helped put the Preps together and recorded their CD's in his studio it did eventually become too difficult for him to share time between the two groups on the road and so Jim left the Preps and was replaced by Jim Yester of the Association. Last in the video is the award given to Jim for the preservation of harmony. Visit: reunionthesingingroup.com (One g between singing and group)

1953/4 I was a Freshman at Brigham Young University and an MC on one of the BYU Program Bureau's first shows. I introduced another Freshman and our singer JIM PIKE.
After he sang, I told the audience of old people that "You have just heard someone very special. Jim will go far in the music world." And he surely has. Loved the Lettermen and played them often as a DJ in Provo, on a military radio station in Japan and in New York City on WRFM. Then with my wife Caren, saw Jim again with Reunion a couple of years ago as they performed at the Scera Outdoor Theatre in Orem, Utah. Still fantastic!

...such a classy video. Never thought I'd watch the whole fourteen plus minutes, but as a former barbershopper, it sure did put more than just a few tears in my eyes. You did an excellent job in putting this together.

Near the end when Reunion is singing the tag to Over The Rainbow, that's a 24-second post by Jim, and he outlasts the rest of the guys and looks like he could have held it longer. That guy is inhuman. One of the best singers in the history of popular and vocal group singing.

Jim, Gary, and Tony are my favorite Lettermen lineup. Then Donnie and Bob -- those 5 guys sang on the hits and made the sound. Reunion is great and I prefer the to the current Lettermen lineup -- no offense. To each his own.

I had the opportunity to direct a video taping of the Lettermen in, I believe 1978 or 79 in Pittsburgh at a hotel club room. Any chance you still have a copy of that? I know it was originally done on Quad VTR, 3 camera shoot.

Jim, I just wanted to say that now that I am 64, the Lettermen have replaced the Beatles as my favorite group. About 6 months ago I became Facebook friends with Paul Engemann, Bob's nephew, purely by chance, when I commented on the rendition of "I Believe" that he and his brothers did at Bob's funeral. I doubt if you'll see this, but just in case, is Reunion still performing, and if so, will you be anywhere near Cincinnati in the future? You guys sound even better than you did in the 60's.
