- For April Fools 2024, Minecraft released the Poisonous Potato update, also known as Snapshot 24w14potato - a wacky snapshot with a whole dimension based around the poisonous potato.
Mojang developer Ulraf invited me, BrunoDanUy, and ibxtoycat to explore the update with him and discover what could happen if the useless poisonous potato was given... a lot more uses.
Along the way we discovered wearable quest-giving potato plants, whole new wood types, potato animals, a hot potato that burns you when you hold it, a grappling hook, and the Floatato - a redstone device that turns any connected blocks into a flying machine.
Then we turned the entire End Island into a spaceship and sailed it across the void.
This is our story.

I love the April Fools updates because you can tell the developers just get to play around. They wouldn't put SO MUCH into them if they weren't having fun, with things like the fletching table and the many-staged boss.
Also, with the flotaters - they're adding wind charges. Feels like using some form of them to craft a flighted device isn't entirely out of the question.

as a bedrock player I felt it my due diligence to view the live ToyCat stream, but I'm glad to finally see your POV! I'd so very much enjoy seeing more collabs with the two of you! You are both genius in the ways of mining and crafting, but that is where the similarities end, and I believe the duality would amuse the community to no end... well... it would amuse me at the very least 😊
Yeah, I feel like we've got very different brains! He got the floatater and immediately wanted to test the boundaries. I had some of the same ideas, but I didn't believe any of them would work until he just went and did it 😂

for the Flotater It should be in vanilla Minecraft, but to not make it overpowered the recipe should include a heavy core and a piston. That way it can give the heavy core more uses and gives the player more options after crafting one mace or a hard decision on what to craft first
The Floatater would still need a massive nerf. For a start, it should not be able to move unpushable blocks - we absolutely broke the End Island by moving all the obsidian and the bedrock portal. Its push limit is way higher than a piston, but it doesn't have the same approach to collision, so players could phase objects into each other (like we did with the two end cities). It would also need a better way to stop it mid-flight, and a ton of other tweaks that would absolutely neuter it compared with the hilarious chaos we get from this version.
@@Pixlriffssure, but these are not insurmountable challenges. After all, look what's already getting accomplished in the Create mod, among other things
@@reidmock2165 These updates only proved what Grian said last year during the moon 'update', they prove that they can add things that they say are not possible.

The Floater block definitely looks like a product of something Mojang wants in the game, but haven't quite nailed down yet. Some issues from the video come to mind like being able to interact with moving floaters so you can stop them again, giving intuitive feedback on how many blocks you have on your floater and when you reach the limit and preventing accidentially picking up stray blocks, becoming a part of your vehicle.
But then again the motion and physics of the floater and the attached blocks look so smooth, that it can't just have been a project for an april fools joke. I am sure Mojang wants some sort of multiblock custom vehicle in the game. They may just be figuring things out right now.
This whole snapshot is a *lot* of work for none of it to be added, we're definitely going to be seeing at least some of it.
Ooh, that makes sense, yeah! There's often a thing or two like that in the April Fool's updates so I wouldn't be surprised! And hey, you get a bit of silly beta testing out of it :P
Glazed terracotta would be, imo, a logical block to use to slide along the surface when attached to a floato structure. I could see the mechanic only working on natural blocks like grass or logs, so it's contained to terrain.
Bonus points for having a glazed surface that will move up 1-2 blocks on its own, moving higher to find a clear path. Like auto-jump 😆
The floatators and lashing potatoes would have been a fun thing to have in vanilla. Bungie jumping, smooth elevators and castle portcullis... 😊
We use Poisonous potatoes as currency on our real. We had fun with the add on for the day

I watched toycat's stream, and I can't remember when I've laughed so much watching a Minecraft video. It's a shame he was a little under the weather for this.
It was great to hang out with him! He did great even if he was still feeling rough.
This snapshot, although obviously not ironed out & just for fun, really made me realize how much I've been yearning for some brand new content to Minecraft. Like a new dimension or something. I've loved all the improvements to old features & additions, but having something completely unfamiliar would be a breath of fresh air, I think

Honestly they should add wild potato and carrot flowers to MC as an alternate way to find them rather than just villages and shipwrecks

sheesh ! i wonder if the floatater mechanic of pushing smoothly multiple block as one entities tested in april fool snapshot could be the basis to integrated aspect of mod like Create into vanilla minecraft !!

You know, in its current form it’s obviously a joke, but I can’t help but love the way the potato dimension generates. I’d love to see it turned into a mod that rebrands the potatoeyness, for lack of a better phrase, but keeps and refines the ideas of this very silly but very fun little update.

And homestly. An armour that refills your hunger slightly faster than running and jumping drains it would be cool too.

100% of it is either memes or game-breaking features but I'm so happy they exist either way.

This entire snapshot just has kingbdogz written all over it, it feels like the aether, but potato
I can see a map using the floatato to move a platform and pick up pieces of a map. And platform up them as you move around.
Imagine this combined with the last April Fools update with the moon dimension, you'd get there in moments XD
Floatatoes. The redstone rocket boosters we always wanted but we'll probably never get.
Puzzleshaped structures in the end, up high or down low. Then you get to the capstone and power it to fly the pieces together to form the end-citadel
This was so much fun to watch on your Twitch stream. I missed bits of it since I was also working, so will have to re-watch it when I have time.
Most of these textures are April Fools kind of hideous but I actually love the potato sprouts and I'd take a potato spider in vanilla.
9:55 was, frankly, the funniest moment of the entire stream. And there were PLENTY of funny moments.
I'm always in awe of what they are able to accomplish in the April Fools snapshots. The amount of "work" that goes into them is truly commendable!
They need to make the potato dimension be the dimension that the ancient city portal takes you to. I know for a fact that everybody would love it

This was a blast to watch, thank you for sharing. One of my favorites was during the boss fight, when you got excited about the resin because of the fletching table implications.
I would love to see a miniseries on this update, similar to the OBAAT one. There's a different vibe to seeing you discover new mechanics, and your excellent tutorials.
This was a great April Fools update! It does make me hope we might get a grappling hook at some point. A floatato like block would be incredible too. For now I’m just happy to get to play with the kind of buggy weird versions in this incredible April Fools update.

I feel like this April Fools is a preview for upcoming features, as well as a testing ground for random stuff, like the last ones have been.
Some of these gameplay mechanics are too awesome to not use them in vanilla Minecraft.

April fools, adds an entire dimension...
The parameters for custom dimensions have been in the game since 1.16. The 2020 April Fools update famously added "infinite dimensions".
Meanwhile, Xilefian mentioned on Twitter that one of the his Potato Update features totally broke item stacking, and nobody noticed until the following day because they weren't cross-checking each other's code the way they usually do.
There's a reason the game takes time to develop lol

Honestly, de- potatofy a lot of the mechanics they put in here and you’ve got a seriously cool update. Obviously there’s need to be some balancing, but I think people would be happy to see a lot of these things find their way into vanilla
The funny thing is that most of these features are mods that are being mocked by the vanilla devs in this update.
Hell, most of this is just the Aether with significantly more potato.
This update is so fun but it also makes me so aggravated with Mojang! Why can't they add a new dimension and some of this other stuff in Vanilla?!

A lot of this new stuff is hella buggy
I know some of the wilder things in this update are buggy and just for fun, but a funky dimension with new blocks, plants, mobs? I'm sure that would work.
@@meglh23 I think dimension-locking new content is generally bad value for money, especially when the existing dimensions don't all feel fully fleshed out. They know from stats that a big chunk of the playerbase still haven't gone to the End. If they added yet another dimension, chances are a lot of casual players would never see or play with those new features.
The Floatater seems too well made to be an one-off thing for a joke update.
Brandon (aka kingbdogz) is definitely the one to make the dimension and mob spawning for the reason that this is the aether but potatofied
