I was fortunate enough to have known Eric from 1988 until he died in 2007. He was a compassionate man and an incredible artist. I was a Vietnam vet dealing with PTSD when I made a return trip to Vietnam. It was organized by a VVA chapter in Akron, Oh. Eric was on the trip to do some research about a possible mural covering the Battle of Hue in 1968. Eric and I shared a room for the entire trip thru Vietnam, including a week in Bangkok before and after the trip. I could talk to Eric about things that I had kept inside and away from my family, friends, coworkers, teammates, anyone. Eric was a Korean War vet so we could connect on that level and I knew nothing about his artistic works. He was a rock and a pillow for me the entire trip. A year later we took another trip back and a few years later Eric was doing, for free, all the graphics of VIETNAM ECHOES, a short-lived veteran newsletter. When I hear his voice I just smile and remember. Thanks for posting this.
Gary Davis? Gimmee a break. This was written by Blind Boy Fuller in 1940. AND it was based on a previous tune called "Baby, Don't You Tear My Clothes".
+Benjamin Simonson Van Schmidt got it from Blind Boy Fuller... who may have gotten it from his teacher Rev. Gary Davis. Fuller recorded it first, but Davis only wanted to record gospel for a while... even though he taught blues also.

It's always good to hear Gary Davis songs sung by skilled performers

I came here from Bob Dylan
I wonder if Dave Von Ronk wrote this song, or if Eric Von Schmidt is the original writer.
