Obviously I couldn't at the same time count cards and see background so I count by hearing cards (32) cause everyone was red on background and was able to see what was wrong behind her. Also if I see "can you pay attention" in something that simple I look for tricks and clues in background.

not true. if you got 14 and noticed some background changes that means that you can pay attention to more than one thing at once. If you got the 14 wrong completely then you aren't good at paying attention.

It specifically said "count how many red cards are in the deck" so even though I noticed the background changing, I tried not to pay attention to it and stayed focused on the cards. For me, I deliberately avoided looking at the background that was obviously changing, and it feels like it was more of a trick question than an actual "can you pay attention" thing. Or am I thinking way too much lmao

They never said that one would have done badly if they didn't catch the differences. They only asked, "did you notice the changes?"

That's the point. The idea behind it was that if you were told to focus on something, would you be able to keep an eye on your surroundings? Some people are awful at it, others are brilliant at it. I knew what was going to happen so I managed to spot all of the changes and count the cards, how did you guys do?

The title of the video specifically says how well do you pay attention. This is called misdirection the point is to illustrate how narrow your mind focuses when given a specific task.
BS; one of reason we have ability to focus our vision is to reduce strain on our brain, so that he doesn't have to deal with all our eyes see, but rather focus on important stuf. Not noticing this relatively minor and gradual changes in blurred background with mostly static objects, while focused on moving objects in foreground that are in focus and are part of task given to us, is perfectly normal and expected. If someone is able to count all cards and see all changes in background, then he is NOT NORMAL.
I think that is the whole point of the video. If you can pay attention to only the cards you are staying focused on the task. If you switch your focus between the background and the cards then your are easily distracted and have trouble focusing on what you are supposed to do. They already know you can't focus on both.
Because in my native language, noun for brain is classified as noun of male gender, and we form sentence according to nouns gender. So we write/speak different words (verbs) for same meaning if noun in sentence is of male, female or neuter gender. So, sometime when writing in English, I transfer that gender specifications of nouns from my native language.

For all of you complaining about how they didnt ask for you to pay attention to the background, thats the whole point. If you paid well attention to the cards, you wouldnt have noticed the background that means you pay attention to what you are supposed to i guess. So STOP HATING goodness! You all just always try to look for a flaw in their videos.
They told us to pay attention to the cards, not the background. If they just told us to pay attention, everyone would've noticed the changing background. This video basically process that if you counted correctly AND paid attention to the background, you're a really good multitasker.
Azil Jones I think the whole point of the video is that if you can pay to only the cards you can do a good job focusing on the task at hand. If your focus switches between the cards and the background, then you are easily distracted. I learned this in psychology.

How anyone can count how many red cards there are and count the number of changes, I would be amazed because when you're asked to do something, you don't focus on other stuff as well. The logic of this is flawed and a waste of time
This reminds me of the "weapon focus effect." This is where eyewitnesses tend to concentrate on the weapon the criminal is holding, to the point where they can't remember the details of the crime, including what the criminal looked like.
I noticed things changing in the background but chose to ignore them and pay attention to the task given to me. In general being able to choose what you pay attention to is a very important skill which most of people develope in school. Without it doing tasks that require a lot of consentration would be really hard if not even impossible if one's not sitting in a 100% silent and motionless room ^ ^'
If you didn't notice the changes in the background that means you are good at focusing; if you did, however, that means you have low attention levels.

The goal of this activity was to count how many red cards were there so our attention is strictly limited to looking at the colour of the cards....I bet 100% not a single person would catch those little unnoticeable details.
Actually some people were able to see the 'little' (seriously how is a plant disappearing little) changes that occurred during the video. So yeah you lost the bet. Kinda exaggerated I think when you say 100%.

Exactly what I am thinking now. I can either count cards or look at the background. Funny thing: There was this Community episode, where a small story with one of the characters was going on in the background but if you concentrate on the characters and the dialogue (I have to focus more cos I'm no native English speaker), you can very easily miss all that.
That's the point of the experiment (The experiment that's been done thousands of times now.)

In film studies I learned that when a movie maker wants to give you that "something isn't right" feeling, they'll shift the backgrounds. Its called a zolly shot.

i was counting the cards, and it was even harder that im color blind, and i noticed changes in the background, so every time i looked at it i get distracted, then i add a red card to my count in case i missed it in my amount.

i noticed the background was changing, but i didnt notice any specifics. like i saw a big blob of movement when the trees changed, for example, or when the lady disappeared, but i wasnt paying attention so i couldnt have told you anything more in-depth than "some stuff happened back there"

Actually while I was trying my best to count the cards, I automatically drew my attention to the music so I got a little distraction. When I was trying so hard on the cards, I was aware something was going on in the background, but I didn't know why, so I continued counting the cards and when I finished, I finished the video seeing any other background differences.

I only saw it when the plant, the lamp and the woman dissapeared - just because I saw something white/bright in the background and was like "wait.. where's the woman? I'm confused.. Oh! red card"
But I still counted 15 red cards..?

I didn't bother counting... I did not pay attention to the background either....

The big trick with all of the videos that look like this, is the fact that the area where your eyes are focused is placed on the screen in a space that means everything around it from a certain point onwards is not properly focused in your field of vision meaning few people ever noticed the changes in the background
After the second or third card I realized that it required focus not attention to count the cards. I knew I would be able to count the cards if I tried, however since it had no real point I payed attention to the details and noticed everything that happened in the background. I did what the video suggested I should have done in the end, but I payed no attention to the lady with the cards as suggested in the beginning of the video. It is physically impossible to count the cards and notice the changes in the background as human eyes cannot focus on two different things at once; you would need to focus on the cards and background to notice all of that. (:

I go the plant, the woman, the noses, the lamp and then the plant again at the end and counted all 14 red cards... that might just be because I watch too much Sherlock

+Josh Pike The name of the video is intended for people to watch the video expecting something to test how good they are at paying attention. Most people would try to pay as much attention as they can and missing the background changes suggests that you didn't pay good attention. Sooo you are supposed to (try) to notice them. :P
well....i kinda got the number of the cards correct and noticed all the changes on my first try so i dont know what its supposed to test....
I counted the right number and noticed everything in the background

accually you would have to pay very poor atention to the backround, some one with add might get bored of counting and then look at the backround. btw I counted 32, because all the cards were red.

087gia obviosly, It was a minute long video. thats much to short. but if it were maybe 5 minutes with 150 cards then dont you think you would have stopped counting and either stopped the video or started looking in the backround. some one with a more severe attention disorder would stop counting in this video.
ok....but it wasn't a five minute long video, it was one. and i don't know what you mean by "obviously"..who said mine isn't severe? you clearly are just assuming and almost no one with even severe add would have gotten thatt distracted in as you say "only a minute long video".
087gia Firs of all, I never said yours was not sever, I just said some one with more sever add than you would not do this. I know a few people with add. and I know some of them would stop paying attention to the cards after just a couple because of just the thought of counting. now you are the one making assumptions that no one would get distracted by a video this short. anyways they said inorder o have noticed the backround you would have to be very good at paying atention. When in fact you would have to have a very sever add.

I saw some of the changes in the corner of my eye because I knew that's what it would be asking for (I've seen things like this before; its part of a magicians trick. Turning your attention to one thing while the real trick is going on elsewhere), but only the major ones such as the plant disappearing

ItsTheOlivia Because you're supposed to count the numbers on the front, not the back of the cards. (Don't worry, TONS of people did that!) She had 32 cards all together but 14 of them were either diamond or hearts! :)

This so dumb, if you tell someone to perform a task that requires concentration on one spot, they're not going to notice subtle changes in the background. (except maybe the trees)
Yes people actually can notice the changes. I did and lost track of the cards though its probably because I have ADHD...

I noticed every thing. Honestly that isn't really an attention test, it is more of a tricky eye test.
