Tutorial 1 - Side Chain Compression

Compression is a vital tool in mixing your music. But what if you want your compressor to react to another instrument in your arrangement? That is totally possible with side chain compression. Perhaps the most used version of this would be the kick drum controlling the compression of the bass and this is the example I'm showing here. But it could of course be any instrument controlling any other instrument in your song. The possibilities are endless and more than just aiding an instrument to sit better in the mix, it can also be a stylistic tool to create some interesting effects. Once you become familiar with side chain compression, I guarantee you it will become a much used tool in your arsenal. Check it!!
