Dionne is criminally underrated and never given the recognition she deserves. She is a technically brilliant vocalist who really understands the theory of music and technique. You can tell Whitney got a lot of her mannerisms from Dionne and this is my favourite song of Dionnes. She makes singing look deceivingly easy.
It could simply be mannerisms that both Dionne and Whitney developed because it is in them not because they were imitating one another.
Underrated? Dude, she couldn't have had a more successful career. Who is underrating her?

@@GalaxyNexus1 exactly. People all too often get on these sites, and use that WAY-overused phrase "he/she is SO under-rated" for artists who may be in reality superstars, or at least have had multiple mega-hits.
Dionne Warwick is the personification of tone and elegant musical choices, imo. One of the best there ever will be!

Cissy Houston, is the younger sister of Dionne Warwick's mother Nana Drinkard-Warwick. Cissy is only a few years older than Dionne, so Dionne was more of an Aunt to Whitney, than cousin. But yes, they are cousins.

Whitney Houston is always considered the superstar of the family, but Dionne Warwick has always been my favorite. I think Dionne was at her peak in the 1980’s and was singing then with a fully confident stage presence and a beautiful full tone.
Ms. Dionne is mos def the 1st superstar of that family. She paved the way for Whitney and so many other singer's as well especially when it was tough for black singers. She made the music world take notice that great singers like her had no color!!

I remember backpacking through Thailand with my mates in the 1990’s we stopped at a market and I bought some of her albums on cassettes (😂) . . . . My mates had never heard of her but later that night when we where swinging in our hammocks smiling and stoned . . . They thanked me . .

She received the best pop female Grammy for this song in ‘79. I saw her live at the Queen Elizabeth theatre (Vancouver) in 88 or 89 which was a treat. She was a smoker back then, but it didn’t seem to affect her vocals negatively it seems. A lot of us smoked in those days!
She won 2 grammys that night RNB and Pop. First ever woman to reach that milestone.
Sadly the constant smoking caught up with her by the mid-1980s and by the end of the 1990s her voice was almost unrecognizable. That said, we all have our vices and her legacy based on her prime years is untouchable.

Ms. Dionne is a phenomenal vocal technician!!! The go-to legendary icon! The greatest whoever did it!! Her vocal ability is one of a kind, unique, natural, beautiful, unpredictable, and geniously intentional all at once❤❤❤

I saw her last monday in the Queen Elisabeth Hall here in Antwerp, and it was a truly magical experience. At her 81 she is the definition of sass & class and such a sweet and beautifull presence. At her age she still has a better voice than some other younger artists.
Near the end she asked us to sing along or to sing some part of a song. And she tolled us off in such a funny way, because we screwed up, before we had to repeat our singing. I absolutely adore her!
That was on the song she performed "what the world need now is love", lol
The artist that i can tell the most depths tone that i ever heard her voice is something patti is correct when she said dionne has a different voice quality she is only has that tone.

It may give some awareness as too why she did not get some of the credits that she deserved in America

I was about to say the same thing. Whitney Houston's mother and Dionne's mother were sisters. Also Whitney's mother, Cissy Houston was very close to Aretha Franklin for over 50 years and also sang backup for Aretha Franklin.

This is probably one her best live performances for sure. She was Whitney Houston’s 1st cousin, so definitely some similarities in their performances. She was never with Motown believe or not. During this time period she was with Arista records.

I don't where can I find whitney houston that version she sang it so so well and I was in a little boy and I was in tears not me alone but all the audience went to tears stand up at the end herself got the emotion with tears even doinnne her cousin was there too wirh some eyes watering its was at 85 and I was 10 years old.

Dionne was one of the biggest female artists of the 1960s but after Bacharach and David split she struggled to maintain her success in the 70s. This record was produced by Barry Manilow for Dionne's big comeback album after Clive Davis signed her to Arista Records in 1979. It was a massive top 5 hit in the USA in late 79 but totally flopped here in the UK where Dionne had never quite had the same level of chart success. Cilla Black famously covered Anyone Who Had a Heart in 1964 giving her a UK No1 hit- Dionne was bitter about that and in concert she ALWAYS mentions it! "If I had coughed in my version, I swear Cilla would've coughed too". I've seen Dionne in concert several times over the decades and her unique voice and phrasing is incredible. She appeared with Gladys Knight & Randy Crawford on tour in 2000- 3 amazingly talented VOCALISTS! No dancers, no flashing lights - just awesome SINGING! Sadly her most recent performances are awful- her voice is shot mainly due to smoking too much weed over the past 60 years. Her recording career has included many iconic classics.
