A Metro-like configuration can help but it will reduce seating capacity and increase the standing of passengers. The reduction of Long-distance trains in the suburban network will increase the frequency. Another option is to have viaducts to boost network lines and thereby adding more services and reducing overcrowding in trains.

for those who are saying, why don't we build elevated tracks above the current tracks, i want to remind them that, the trains tracks are not the only things which are there along the route, there are also many road-over-rail bridges, some of them critically important to road traffic. so, either the rail corridor gets built at a height where it passes over the road bridge, or the road bridge is broken down and recreated to pass over the double level rail train. either way, it is a very costly and disruptive maneuver. and technical thing is, building another road on top of existing road is one thing, |it is relatively easy, but building anything over live wires at 25KV is totally another thing. that too when the train traffic is continuous, the risk of falling debris is way too much.
double deckers can be used but .. with a new design which allows people to go on upper berth from platform only.. .like at every coach's end there should be a stair which can be made as spacious as you want .. for people to come down or go on the upper decker .. stairs should not be inside the coach but outside ... that will allow them to move faster.
there is one main problem with Mumbai Local line setup especially platforms. currently track 1 and 2 are for slow down and slow up traffic while track 3 and 4 are for fast down and fast up. applies to both Central as well as Western railway. ideally, in a quadruple setup, outer tracks i.e., 1 and 4 should be for slow trains and inner tracks 2 and 3 should have been for fast trains. this way, there was no need for platforms for track 2 and 3 where fast trains do not stop. but main benefit would have been that changing trains would have been much easier. suppose if we are at Church gate and want to go to Santacruz, now presently, we have to get down at Bandra platform 4, then walk up the staircase, walk the corridor, go down the staircase to platform1 and then catch the slow train there to go to Santacruz, this causes crowding on the staircase as well as the overhead pass ways. but if the 1 and 2 were for down slow and down fast trains, then the process would be --> we would get in a fast train, get down at Bandra and at same platform on other side, get into a slow train and reach Santacruz. no need to climb up and down the staircase, only ones on the staircase would be those whose destination is that station. such tracks exist in lonavala Pune section where the stretch is only two tracks but it splits into 4 tracks at some stations so that local trains take the inner tracks (1 and 4) while mail trains pass through on inner tracks (2 and 3)

My POV (I'm sure many would agree) Time spent in train: 1hr+ one way 70% days i travel entirely standing. 20% days i get to sit for last 10-15 mins. 10% days i skip trains because of no space. Those who don't want to stand and not in a rush can wait. And those who don't care because they travel standing anyways would get on it. Ventilation needs to be improved/redesigned that's for sure.
In Mumbai biggest problem in local train people facing is of not the space but a problem so far ignored by all. The problem is 4 door coaches. Because of this in platform people overcrowding in order to reach doors. At the same time inside the train again people overcrowd near the 4 gates to get easy exit. When train come to halt from platform people start climbing even before train stop only to face the people getting ready to alight. This create a he'll of a situation for exit and entry. Otherwise inside the train people manage the space available. This exit entry problem can be solved only by increasing the doors . A coach can easily redesign with at least 6 or 7 doors in place of 4. This will dispers the density of crowing at 4 to 6 or 7 . Life will be easier. Standing space increasing means better commuting. Authority must think about this Otherwise when all trains come with closed door facility travel will become much more difficult as the density of traveling public per minute per train is unbelievable in Mumbai. Will anyone in railways start thinking this????

Double decker inner city trains can only be viable if you have separate upper and lower deck entrances and ramps and crowd control bariers. It's very specialised solutions done in only few places and it breaks the platform for standard trains. Double deckers in normal set up should be only be used in long distance routes.

Instead of making DD local trains, WR/CR can make use of metro-like design in the current locals. In metro, there is more space for standing and less place for sitting, if this is used then capacity can increase because of loss of seats. This is my opinion which could work but only thing that can save overcrowding is automatic doors and Mumbai metro

1st of all the same idea which is used in current double decor train is not necessary to be used Insted we can create double decor train my multiple platforms means 2 platform 1 on top of other. And trains will be just one on top of other
Instead of double decker trains, we can have bridges over existing local network and run trains on both tracks (on Bridge and Normal Track) also at station level we can have platform on bridge itself, to minimize infrastructure rework we can have only fast stations such as Thane, Ghatkopar, Kurla, Dadar, CSMT as double platform stations so that fast trains will run on bridges and slow trains will run on below normal tracks. also wherever road bridges crossing over rail line we need to elevate these bridges as we have done in Metros. This will surely double the capacity if we manage crowds at stations particularly fast stations. this will generate revenue to railways in long run such as extra space for shops and advertisement. Also considering special trains for long distance trips such as Badlapur, Virar which will not halt at unnecessary stations which will reduce travel time for long distance commuters.
Well you should see the Sydney local train, it is a double decker train with more space and comfort. I think indian railway should make double decker local train like Sydney.
Is complete standing seats a viable ans useful options for local trains? In peak hours on experimental basis few coach can be made seating less, will be able to accomodate more passangers, the ones travelling shorter distances can choose to travel in those.
I believe the doorway passage is important but the bogey design needs improvement if we rearrange the seating each bogey can accommodate more passengers easily. I see this personally if the seats took less space people can come in and out more easily and breathability will improve.
Well,The mainline double decker is useless for local trains but can design new coaches with big corridor and doors like mini double decker train and best example could be Sydney metro though some would say Sydney has less ridership but if the trains are more frequent it may work

Another menace in Local Trains is people standing in Half part of the doorways and thus only half part of the double doors is actually available for passengers to get in and get out. one easy way of cancelling this culture is to make it official that all exits must be from the side the train is going and all entry must be made from the other side of the door ie if the train is going to Virar, then at Dadar station, platform is on left hand side, the left-hand side part of the doorway (pointing towards Virar) should be the one for alighting while the right-hand side should be for getting in. at Bandra, Andheri, Borivali, it would be the right-hand side for alighting and left-hand side for getting in as platform is on the right side of the train. if this rule was made official, the door blocking situation will automatically become illegal. this rule will also help in passenger behavior when AC trains with closed doors become the Norm. perfect solution would be double discharge stations, but it is too late to implement it.
Hi Powertrain, your video was very informative, even i was talking the same topic while traveling in local train, i also came up with the idea of double decker train, but later i too realised that it'll be a failure. Suggestion: How about making a different layout for the local during peak hours Ex 1 : make all 15 coaches of local train with the config of single door system means for 1 coach only 1 single door which will open from top to bottom and vice versa or make 2 huge doors for 1 coach will open in traditional manner (mind that this train will be AC ventilated and will reflect design of somewhat our metro train) This train will not have any railing , seats etc which will create obstruction Ex 2 : during peak hours, we can use the above config train in split manner ,means out of 15 coaches, 10 coach will be like i explained above and 5 coaches will be normal current used coaches This will be really helpfull for people onboarding and alighting easily which are short distance travellers and also for long distance travellers (they can sit on those 5 coaches during peak hours) I am sure, this will be very effective for mumbaikars ,less chance of stabbing etc Please read this one ❤❤❤

Until and unless express/mail lines are completely segregated from local lines this is not possible. Currently fast lines share tracks with express/mail and semi-fast locals change tracks between fast and slow lines. Even if complete segregation is achieved it won't happen that easily. To convert such a large system to CBTC you will have to keep sections of suburban lines closed for months if not a year. This is absolutely not possible in case of Mumbai. The lifeline cannot be stopped for more than 2-3 days.
High speed rail is for longer distances and cannot be used for short distance travelling. Converting local trains tracks to high speed would be waste of money.
Wait for metro network to build out and expressways to complete. This pressure might not exist. If you still want double decker, think as stacked. Top layer will exit on its own platform level
It needs more frequency. That's the only solution. Expand stations and add more lines. Perhaps most stations with 4 lines, so slow and fast go together. There's no other solution. Double decker only makes sense for shuttle service I'm fearing with metro, local train will be ignored.

Yeah even I was thinking that but I see two issues. First is something he already highlighted, the increased heights would require higher power lines, brigdes, underpasses etc. That would be very costly. Secondly, making train higher would result in a higher center of gravity. That would increase the risk trains toppling over at high speeds. The way to counter this would be to increase the gauge length, which would be insanely expensive.
You mean a elevated track on the existing tracks. Yaa this will be costly but even if we try to build this it would be a challenge as the elevated track needs to be created without hampering the trains flow beneath it. Plus all the platforms also need to be also elevated.

I have a thought. Running only fast local trains In speed of 160. Trains will have automatic doors and no seats inside the train. More people can be accommodated. I think train should be 15 coaches and run only between CSMT and Kalyan.(I am considering Central Line only) Travel time from CSMT to kalyan even in fast train takes 1hour because average train speed is only 50-60kmph. If the speed is almost tripled then time taken will be only around 20mins from Kalyan to CSMT for which commuters can stand. And mostly people get down at Dadar only. I think train can halt at Kalyan, Dombivali, Thane, Ghatkopar,Kurla,Dadar and Direct CSMT. I think this thought is ridiculous but it would be quiet nice

@powertrain I beg to differ. Double Decker trains is not a stupid idea. Sydney Australia is a perfect example. But yes, for it to be effective in Bombay given the population, other modes of transport need to developed first. So may be around 2030 once the metro system is established and becomes the main mode of public transport.

It's not a stupid idea. AC trains halt much more time than normal train. If Railway afford that time this is affordable too. Also, it lower deck can be made same as metro where more standing should be there and Upper deck should focus for Long distant passenger with seatings seat. I got to know that dd coach and ac3tier coaches have same height, because dd has almost flat roof and ac3 has kind of parabolic cross section roof, dd loooks af it's unusually large, but it reaches same height has ac3tier's extra roof dome height, so height is not a problem

While everyone is focusing on metro to reduce conjunction in trains. We should also prioritize our buses system. Make bus rides more comfortable (AC electric buses). And spread awareness about the same. Only Buses + metro + local trains can reduce the conjunction on road. It can't be done alone by local trains and metro without buses.

I disagree with this. Please read the entire comment. Intermediate and long distance trains will benefit heavily from double-decker wagens. Germany uses something called doppelstockwagen. These trains are designed very well. The doors are really wide and offer level boarding in 95% cases in all trains. The crowd is not as much as in rush hour Mumbai locals but not too less either. You'll be surprised how crowded these German trains get, especially during holiday season the crowd is wost than in India These trains are designed with lighter metals and the latest emu version uses a single shared co-co bogies with 2 couches like the TGV. These trains come with max of 14 emu double decker couches, are completely AC'ed and support max speed of 200kmph. All this is achieved on standard gauge of tracks not even broad guage like India. This means with the right intent and possible help from Siemens or Alstom, we can build a double decker emu trainset that can be lighter, faster and more spacious than not only our existing Vande Bharat express but also better than its europian doppelstockwagen counterparts. Reference: The German DB new IC2 doppelstockwagen (this does not have the shared bogies like TGV but the rest is as it is) Do some research and let me know what you think. for those who are saying, why don't we build elevated tracks above the current tracks,
i want to remind them that, the trains tracks are not the only things which are there along the route,
there are also many road-over-rail bridges, some of them critically important to road traffic.
so, either the rail corridor gets built at a height where it passes over the road bridge, or the road bridge is broken down and recreated to pass over the double level rail train. either way, it is a very costly and disruptive maneuver.
and technical thing is,
building another road on top of existing road is one thing, |it is relatively easy, but building anything over live wires at 25KV is totally another thing. that too when the train traffic is continuous, the risk of falling debris is way too much.

double deckers can be used but .. with a new design which allows people to go on upper berth from platform only.. .like at every coach's end there should be a stair which can be made as spacious as you want .. for people to come down or go on the upper decker ..
stairs should not be inside the coach but outside ... that will allow them to move faster.
there is one main problem with Mumbai Local line setup especially platforms.
currently track 1 and 2 are for slow down and slow up traffic while track 3 and 4 are for fast down and fast up.
applies to both Central as well as Western railway.
ideally, in a quadruple setup, outer tracks i.e., 1 and 4 should be for slow trains and inner tracks 2 and 3 should have been for fast trains.
this way, there was no need for platforms for track 2 and 3 where fast trains do not stop.
but main benefit would have been that changing trains would have been much easier.
suppose if we are at Church gate and want to go to Santacruz,
now presently, we have to get down at Bandra platform 4, then walk up the staircase, walk the corridor, go down the staircase to platform1 and then catch the slow train there to go to Santacruz, this causes crowding on the staircase as well as the overhead pass ways.
but if the 1 and 2 were for down slow and down fast trains, then the process would be -->
we would get in a fast train, get down at Bandra and at same platform on other side, get into a slow train and reach Santacruz.
no need to climb up and down the staircase, only ones on the staircase would be those whose destination is that station.
such tracks exist in lonavala Pune section where the stretch is only two tracks but it splits into 4 tracks at some stations so that local trains take the inner tracks (1 and 4) while mail trains pass through on inner tracks (2 and 3)

My POV (I'm sure many would agree)
Time spent in train: 1hr+ one way
70% days i travel entirely standing.
20% days i get to sit for last 10-15 mins.
10% days i skip trains because of no space.
Those who don't want to stand and not in a rush can wait. And those who don't care because they travel standing anyways would get on it.
Ventilation needs to be improved/redesigned that's for sure.
If everyone is going to stand, won't it hinder the air flow inside?
In Mumbai biggest problem in local train people facing is of not the space but a problem so far ignored by all. The problem is 4 door coaches. Because of this in platform people overcrowding in order to reach doors. At the same time inside the train again people overcrowd near the 4 gates to get easy exit.
When train come to halt from platform people start climbing even before train stop only to face the people getting ready to alight. This create a he'll of a situation for exit and entry.
Otherwise inside the train people manage the space available.
This exit entry problem can be solved only by increasing the doors . A coach can easily redesign with at least 6 or 7 doors in place of 4. This will dispers the density of crowing at 4 to 6 or 7 . Life will be easier. Standing space increasing means better commuting.
Authority must think about this Otherwise when all trains come with closed door facility travel will become much more difficult as the density of traveling public per minute per train is unbelievable in Mumbai.
Will anyone in railways start thinking this????

Currently it's being experimented in 1 AC local. Looks like it will be implemented in future.
Double decker inner city trains can only be viable if you have separate upper and lower deck entrances and ramps and crowd control bariers. It's very specialised solutions done in only few places and it breaks the platform for standard trains.
Double deckers in normal set up should be only be used in long distance routes.

Instead of making DD local trains, WR/CR can make use of metro-like design in the current locals. In metro, there is more space for standing and less place for sitting, if this is used then capacity can increase because of loss of seats. This is my opinion which could work but only thing that can save overcrowding is automatic doors and Mumbai metro

1st of all the same idea which is used in current double decor train is not necessary to be used

One thing can be done..... Defined entry and exit doors may be given which will ease boarding and Deboarding
Instead of double decker trains, we can have bridges over existing local network and run trains on both tracks (on Bridge and Normal Track)
also at station level we can have platform on bridge itself, to minimize infrastructure rework we can have only fast stations such as Thane, Ghatkopar, Kurla, Dadar, CSMT as double platform stations so that fast trains will run on bridges and slow trains will run on below normal tracks. also wherever road bridges crossing over rail line we need to elevate these bridges as we have done in Metros. This will surely double the capacity if we manage crowds at stations particularly fast stations. this will generate revenue to railways in long run such as extra space for shops and advertisement. Also considering special trains for long distance trips such as Badlapur, Virar which will not halt at unnecessary stations which will reduce travel time for long distance commuters.

Is complete standing seats a viable ans useful options for local trains? In peak hours on experimental basis few coach can be made seating less, will be able to accomodate more passangers, the ones travelling shorter distances can choose to travel in those.
At ground level we can use electrifying train above we can use metro and we need to update the station so we can use another metros too..
I believe the doorway passage is important but the bogey design needs improvement if we rearrange the seating each bogey can accommodate more passengers easily.
I see this personally if the seats took less space people can come in and out more easily and breathability will improve.
I think we should focus on population decline better for upcoming generations.

A major problem with big infrastructures is once they are built then it becomes really difficult to modify them.
Another menace in Local Trains is people standing in Half part of the doorways and thus only half part of the double doors is actually available for passengers to get in and get out.
one easy way of cancelling this culture is to make it official that all exits must be from the side the train is going and all entry must be made from the other side of the door
ie if the train is going to Virar, then at Dadar station, platform is on left hand side, the left-hand side part of the doorway (pointing towards Virar) should be the one for alighting while the right-hand side should be for getting in.
at Bandra, Andheri, Borivali, it would be the right-hand side for alighting and left-hand side for getting in as platform is on the right side of the train.
if this rule was made official, the door blocking situation will automatically become illegal.
this rule will also help in passenger behavior when AC trains with closed doors become the Norm.
perfect solution would be double discharge stations, but it is too late to implement it.

Hi Powertrain, your video was very informative, even i was talking the same topic while traveling in local train, i also came up with the idea of double decker train, but later i too realised that it'll be a failure.
Suggestion:
How about making a different layout for the local during peak hours
Ex 1 : make all 15 coaches of local train with the config of single door system means for 1 coach only 1 single door which will open from top to bottom and vice versa or make 2 huge doors for 1 coach will open in traditional manner (mind that this train will be AC ventilated and will reflect design of somewhat our metro train)
This train will not have any railing , seats etc which will create obstruction
Ex 2 : during peak hours, we can use the above config train in split manner ,means out of 15 coaches, 10 coach will be like i explained above and 5 coaches will be normal current used coaches
This will be really helpfull for people onboarding and alighting easily which are short distance travellers and also for long distance travellers (they can sit on those 5 coaches during peak hours)
I am sure, this will be very effective for mumbaikars ,less chance of stabbing etc

Until and unless express/mail lines are completely segregated from local lines this is not possible. Currently fast lines share tracks with express/mail and semi-fast locals change tracks between fast and slow lines. Even if complete segregation is achieved it won't happen that easily. To convert such a large system to CBTC you will have to keep sections of suburban lines closed for months if not a year. This is absolutely not possible in case of Mumbai. The lifeline cannot be stopped for more than 2-3 days.
High speed rail is for longer distances and cannot be used for short distance travelling. Converting local trains tracks to high speed would be waste of money.
Wait for metro network to build out and expressways to complete. This pressure might not exist.
If you still want double decker, think as stacked. Top layer will exit on its own platform level
It needs more frequency.
That's the only solution.
Expand stations and add more lines.
Perhaps most stations with 4 lines, so slow and fast go together.
There's no other solution.

Yeah even I was thinking that but I see two issues.
First is something he already highlighted, the increased heights would require higher power lines, brigdes, underpasses etc. That would be very costly.
Secondly, making train higher would result in a higher center of gravity. That would increase the risk trains toppling over at high speeds. The way to counter this would be to increase the gauge length, which would be insanely expensive.
You mean a elevated track on the existing tracks. Yaa this will be costly but even if we try to build this it would be a challenge as the elevated track needs to be created without hampering the trains flow beneath it. Plus all the platforms also need to be also elevated.

Running only fast local trains In speed of 160.
Trains will have automatic doors and no seats inside the train. More people can be accommodated.
I think train should be 15 coaches and run only between CSMT and Kalyan.(I am considering Central Line only)
Travel time from CSMT to kalyan even in fast train takes 1hour because average train speed is only 50-60kmph. If the speed is almost tripled then time taken will be only around 20mins from Kalyan to CSMT for which commuters can stand. And mostly people get down at Dadar only.
I think train can halt at Kalyan, Dombivali, Thane, Ghatkopar,Kurla,Dadar and Direct CSMT.

what if they start running short distance trains like Dadar to churchgate or bandra to dadar, and have sittings like metro, people can travel while standing for few minutes, creating separate platforms for the short distance train will not affect the traffic of regular trains, this might not solve the problem of overcrowding, but will provide relief to the passengers who travel on short distances.

@powertrain I beg to differ. Double Decker trains is not a stupid idea. Sydney Australia is a perfect example. But yes, for it to be effective in Bombay given the population, other modes of transport need to developed first. So may be around 2030 once the metro system is established and becomes the main mode of public transport.

It's not a stupid idea. AC trains halt much more time than normal train. If Railway afford that time this is affordable too.

I got to know that dd coach and ac3tier coaches have same height, because dd has almost flat roof and ac3 has kind of parabolic cross section roof, dd loooks af it's unusually large, but it reaches same height has ac3tier's extra roof dome height, so height is not a problem

What about developing metro in Mumbai like Delhi metro?
Just like Airbus has upper level ingress/egress, it is quite possible for major stations to have a platforms on upper level too..
While everyone is focusing on metro to reduce conjunction in trains. We should also prioritize our buses system. Make bus rides more comfortable (AC electric buses). And spread awareness about the same. Only Buses + metro + local trains can reduce the conjunction on road. It can't be done alone by local trains and metro without buses.

Intermediate and long distance trains will benefit heavily from double-decker wagens.
Germany uses something called doppelstockwagen. These trains are designed very well. The doors are really wide and offer level boarding in 95% cases in all trains. The crowd is not as much as in rush hour Mumbai locals but not too less either. You'll be surprised how crowded these German trains get, especially during holiday season the crowd is wost than in India
These trains are designed with lighter metals and the latest emu version uses a single shared co-co bogies with 2 couches like the TGV.
These trains come with max of 14 emu double decker couches, are completely AC'ed and support max speed of 200kmph. All this is achieved on standard gauge of tracks not even broad guage like India. This means with the right intent and possible help from Siemens or Alstom, we can build a double decker emu trainset that can be lighter, faster and more spacious than not only our existing Vande Bharat express but also better than its europian doppelstockwagen counterparts.
Reference: The German DB new IC2 doppelstockwagen (this does not have the shared bogies like TGV but the rest is as it is)
