  • We built the iconic 1959 Topps baseball set, and in this series, we’re going through every card to talk about the players, teams and people who made up major league baseball in 1959. Today, we’ll cover cards 245 to 252 in the set. This week, we look at several prominent baseball families include those of Ray Boone, Clete Boyer and Bobby Adams. Plus, we cover the Boston Red Sox team checklist and explain why Ted Williams does not have his own player card in the 1959 Topps set.

Card collecting ended as a fun kids thing when men, then kids, put the cards in those plastic binders instead of shoeboxes where they belonged. Yeah, I'm old. I think Baby Boomers started the perpetual childhood thing: I can't imagine any dad of my youth doing anything with his cards other than giving them to his kids. Different times. I had a middle school English teacher who proudly told me that she went to grade and high school with Jackie Jenson. He had a phobia of flying and it kind of ended his career.
