    I would like to see someone do this with a regular photo , with stuff in the background not one with perfect lighting and a white background. I have followed many of these videos and it is a lot different look on my photos.

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  6 лет назад

      Thanks Steve. The main reason to use a white background is that it looks more like an actual pencil sketch that way. Most people who do pencil sketches don't draw in the background, or if they do it is only a partial background, so leaving the background white is part of the illusion. I do a slight variation on this for my architectural blue line technique. It will also work as a straight pencil sketch technique if you leave out the blue layer. Here is the Photoshop version: ruclips.net/video/dOBCCEmMJ9I/видео.html If you want to have a background I would suggest fading out the background towards the edges of the image to help with the illusion. Interesting discussion though and I will do a video along these lines.

      George, this is a perfect technique that I now use to help identify folks in group photos. I have a number of family photos, some of which have groups of more than 100 people. From the original photo, I create a pencil sketch portrait using the technique you illustrate here. Then, using Photoshop Elements Type Tool, I number each of the individuals in the photo. From that, using Microsoft Word, I create a numbered key with each person's name, and maybe additional information about that person. With both the original photo and the pencil sketch in hand, it is easy for other's to help me in identifying who's who in the photos. And, these three will be of equally significant help to others that are interested in the genealogy of our family. Even for group photos of just a few people, this technique really makes it clear as to who each person is in the photo. Thanks again!!! Raymond Sanders

    Thank you for the videos! They are easy to follow and understand. And this video goes above and beyond what I was hoping to learn! Is it possible to have only the black part of the sketch print? It would be like a pencil drawing with a transparent background.

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  7 лет назад +1

      Hi, you're welcome. On printing the image, only the black part will print anyway since printers don't have white ink, the white represents the color of the paper. Keep in mind that there are a lot of gray tones in this image which require the white to display properly. You could flatten the image and then using the magic wand delete the white but I don't think you would get a satisfactory result. To get anything useful you would need to strengthen the blacks (layers tool, boost the black) and increase the contrast, but again you may not get what you are hoping for. But... If you simply printed the image on a different light color paper it would work fine. It really needs a color of some kind behind the blacks and grays to work properly.

      How To Gurus - Thank you- I really had not thought about the light background. I'll have to do a test print. Also, I will be double checking my printer's ink in the morning...kind of funny...I do believe it has white ink though- It is a dye sublimation printer. I have only done a couple of print checks on it so im not too familiar with it. I will try what you said and will use the magic wand if the white becomes an issue. Thanks again! !

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  7 лет назад +1

      Hi, sorry to disappoint, printers just don't have white ink. The only common printing process that I know of that uses white ink is screen printing. A way to get a black on transparent print is to simply print the image onto transparency sheets. 3M makes a good one. If you want to try that make sure you get the right type, they have one for laser printers and a different one for ink jet printers.

      Hi, here is my technique for a sketch effect for a house. If you don't want the blue line look just leave off that step. ruclips.net/video/Y-bKzHuhuAE/видео.html This has a harder edge look which I think looks better with architecture.

    I have been frustrated using Elements 14. It does not appear to have the Color Dodge global command as you demonstrated. I find only only a small brush tool used for small areas. Where is the drop down you use in Elements? Online Help does not show it. Thanks for the effort..........I just wish I could make it work.

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  7 лет назад

      Hi Andrew, the Color Dodge is a Blend Mode. Right above the image layers on the Layers Panel you will see a drop down that says Normal. Click on that drop down and you will find Color Dodge.

    How can I now convert this into a blue pencil sketch in PSE11?

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  7 лет назад

      Hi Lenore, the blue line effect is simply a blue layer above the image layers that is blended back in using the Linear Dodge (Add) blend mode or the Screen blend mode. You may want to increase the contrast of the image as well. You can actually color the image any color you like using this technique, just change the color of the color layer. The blue line effect is most effective with architectural images.

    Hello, i am a self teach artist and i do paint portraits in watercolor and color pencils, but now i want to make it a lot easier for myself. I want to make the value layers in photoshop elements, to paint them step by step (in real watercolor on paper) how can i do this? So i have the value layers highlight, midtone, darks?? It would be very helpful to me and every one who is paining 😉👍🏼 . Thank you (maybe you allready have a video like that, but i did not see it yet?)

    • @HTGGeorge

      Hi Julia, sorry I don't have any videos on using Photoshop Elements as a prep step for painting but sounds interesting. I am also a painter but I specialize in acrylics and oils, completely different from watercolors (you artists are brave, watercolors scare me). There is a trick to separate an image out into distinct value areas. I would go for more values than just highlight, mid, shadows. 8 seems like a good number of layers. Here is what you do, open your image, make a duplicate of the background layer, convert that duplicate layer to B&W using the Enhance menu. In Convert to Black and White you will have several options, take a look at the basic settings on the left and go with the one that gives you the most separation, this will be different for every photo. Then to go Save for Web in the File menu and set that to Gif. Set that to Perceptual, No Dither, 8 Colors. That should separate out the image into 8 distinct values of gray. And Save. Open that new image and to separate those areas out onto separate layers use the Magic Wand to select each value area. As each gray tone is selected to to the Layer Menu and chose New Layer via Copy. Hope all that makes sense.

      How To Gurus oh wow, that would be very helpful, for me and many (beginning) artist. Because this is my biggest problem to start a painting. I am a perfectionist. I do paint/draw with soft pastels too, that is just like paintings with oils or acrylic ...only dry 😉. But values are soooooo importent. Is it possible to do it in color too? So you can break a photo in parts... for instance, like these are the mid-tones, these are the darks.? Or do i ask much now🤭😉

    I have version 8 and the mask button is not available, any help?

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  6 лет назад

      Hi Nelida, unfortunately the Layer Mask came in with version 9 of Photoshop Elements. There is a work around but it can be tricky. Adjustment Layers have layer masks in version 8, but regular layers don't. So here is what you can do. Put an Adjustment Layer above your background layer, doesn't matter which but I would use Levels just because that is my favorite. Don't do any adjustments, you just want the Layer Mask on that layer. Now do your effects layer above your background layer and the Adjustment Layer. Then with the new layer that is above the Adjustment Layer selected go to the Layer menu and select Create Clipping Mask, this combines your new layer with the Adjustment layer, the new layer will be indented a bit with an arrow pointing down to the Adjustment Layer. Now you can do your Layer Mask work on the Layer Mask on the Adjustment Layer and it will act as if it is on the new layer. An even easier way is to get a newer version of Photoshop Elements.

    Very detailed but you didn't go into the steps on how to save your work.

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  7 лет назад

      Hi Monika, to save a file just go to the File menu and click Save. If you want to print the image you can print right from the Photoshop Elements file. If you need the file in a different format you have two choices, either use the Save As function in the File menu or if you are saving the file for use on the web use Save for Web also in the File menu. My recommendation is to first save the file in the default Photoshop Elements format using Save, it will be saved as a PSD file and will retain all of the layers, etc. Then if needed you can do a second save to a different format. That way you can always go back to the psd file in the future if you want to make any changes.

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  2 года назад

      I do agree, if you can learn to draw first you will be much better at everything else. If you are talking about bringing in a pencil sketch into Photoshop Elements and improving it then no I don't have a video on that. But basically most pencil sketches will need to be darker and have more contrast. Most artists are too timid when drawing. So scan in your sketch and then add a Levels adjustment layer and play around with the levels. I would first try moving the left side control in a bit and then balance that out with the middle control.
