What a huge difference between the original photo and the finished one, it was beautiful. The dodge and burn techniques really enhanced the photo. Fantastic tutorial and I am learning to use the tools that I was afraid of and did not know how to use. Thank you.

What an excellent video! The best advice on the web for PSE elements is "not to use the dodge and burn tool" because it is claimed as "not being very good!" Then they go on to some super difficult solution that leaves you scratching your head! As you show, the tool is "GOOD and with this method works very well!" Never seen this before, I thank you greatly!!! I guess this puts to end all my edits with people who have "dirty faces!" ....ROFLOL!!!! I know you are laughing right now George!! This lesson is a real keeper!!!

Thank you for posting! Your techniques have really helped me a lot! Glad I got Photoshop Elements 2021, and I'm VERY glad I found your RUclips channel! My latest workofart (separate those words any way you want) is to combine folks in two photos taken during a motorcycle ride to Sumpter, Oregon. We had all our bikes lined up and were standing next to them. I walked about 40 feet away to get us all in the frame and took the first shot with my Canon G16. My friend Lutz came up and I handed him the camera and went and stood next to my bike. I removed the background from the first shot with Lutz and has lady Cathrin and then removed Lutz's bike and Cathrin from the second shot, then placed Lutz and Cathrin in the second shot, using techniques from some of your other videos. Last step was the shadow. We were on grey gravel and the day was cloudy, so shadows were poorly defined and minimal, but they were there. I used the blending layer technique to carefully burn in some shadow under Lutz's bike. Now we're all there in the same shot! How cool is that?

George as others have said you have the best PSe tutorials on RUclips and this video is one of the best I have watched so far on the Dodge and Burn Tool, btw can you explain to us what the Sponge Tool is useful for ?
Hi Peter, Thanks! And... the sponge tool removes or adds color, basically it is a color saturation/desaturation tool. It is called Sponge because when used to remove color it works the same way that a sponge is used in watercolor painting.

Yay, now you use PSE 15, it's the version I am using. You are truly an PSE expert, very in depth, more importantly, you have aesthetic eyes, know what you are editing, :D. I have been wondering what should I do with dodge and burn, here they are, :D. You really help people who buy PSE to save some money and use PSE to achieve professional editing level.

Great video....I would always export my image back into Lightroon and use the brush tool on there to lighten and darken. This saves me that step. Thanks.

WOW, this is exactly what I was looking for. Just yesterday I was looking at videos for using the Dodge and Burn tool. Unfortunately, most were for PS and not PSE. They were also quite old. From among the ones I viewed, your tutorial is the best because it is the most complete and best explained for using the Dodge and Burn tool.
Some of the techniques in the older versions of PS are now available in the newer versions of PSE. I wish there were some way of creating "Actions" for PSE. If there is, can you please demonstrate how to do that for some of the newer PSE versions. I have PSE 14.
Thanks! Right now there is no way to record Actions in Photoshop Elements but the only thing where an Action would work in this video is creating the gray scale layer and that only takes a few clicks anyway so no real time saver. Here it is in a nutshell that will work with all versions of Photoshop Elements: Create New Layer, Fill with 50% Gray, Set Blend Mode to Overlay, that's it. In order to have custom actions for PSE you need to record the actions in Adobe Photoshop then open those actions in PSE. You also need to make sure that you are only doing steps that are the same in PS and PSE which limits the choices even further. I don't expect Adobe will ever add Recordable Actions to PSE, they really want you to purchase PS instead. It is getting quite ridiculous now that Adobe has added some popup ads for PS right inside of PSE.

Interesting! These are probably my least favourite tools as I have never really been able to get any satisfactory results from using them. The advice to start at a low level (5% in this case) is something I will need to take on board and then see if things improve! Thanks once again, George.
You're welcome Peter, that is the main trick with the Burn and Dodge tools, bring down the exposure setting so that it applies more slowly.

I have just recently started to use the dodge, burn, and sponge tools a lot, I am editing all of my pictures with these and of course the adjustment layers to add filters and contrast etc. to make the picture look the way I want. I am finding a lot of options using this method but using a new layer is new to me I cant wait to try it and get good at it. Of course Ill watch this video serval more times so get it right.
If you ever get a web site or facebook page that allows student like me to show you their work let me know I would like you to see how much your teaching ahs helped. I still have a long way to go but the trip is exciting.

Hello, this is my Flickr account I use it to store my picutres when I finished. If you get time to look at them you will be able to see the older ones are not as good as the newer one. That's because I learn new things and implement as I go along. I also am in the process of redoing a lot of my older pictures with things I have learned from you, thanks again for your training. I learn something almost daily. I watched the horse silhouette video this morning and am stil trying to absorb that process, lol.

Mr. Pearson, I would like to somehow dim a specific part of an image that is too bright (a candleabra that is blown out from my having used a high ISO). Can you suggest the best way to do this? Thanks so much!
Hi Joe, you found the right video. I would use the burn tool with a soft edge brush. Put the opacity at a low setting like 20 so that you can add in the adjustment slowly with several clicks of the mouse.

What is the person that you are shooting is of darker tone? Will the layer be grey? Or do we do opposite? Thank you!
Hi, since Dodge and Burn are about lightening and darkening what is already there the technique will be the same.

Here's how I remember which brightens and which darkens. BD--DB. Burn Darkens, Dodge Brightens

You're welcome Marcin, if I only knew Polish, unfortunately I don't so the video is in English. Maybe someone can do a Polish translation closed caption? RUclips allows viewers to add translations. I am not sure of the process since I haven't used it myself but I have seen it around somewhere.

Hey George, Tried to drag a image onto a blank file. My image turned "black&white" why?? The image was a lot bigger but than the blank file, but I found the edges to shrink to the desired size. Why did it turn neutral color??? thx!
Hi, an easy way to bring in a new image and have it auto-resize is to use the Place command in the File Menu. The only thing I can think of that would cause an image to lose color when being dragged into a blank file is if that blank file is set to Grayscale mode. Make sure it is in RGB mode. When you make a new file you have the option to set up the color mode in the new file dialog box, that may have been set to grayscale.

Sweet Jesus, there are so many steps to just do a dodge on a section that it takes almost two pages of notes. Do you have a simpler video on just dodging and burning? I can't get this simple task-or what I thought was simple-to dodge or burn no matter what I do. This is so very complicated compared to what I used to do in the lab.
Dodge and Burn is an artistic job that takes lots of practice to get right. Not something for the faint of heart. But I will be doing a simpler video on how Dodge and Burn works over on my 2nd channel in a couple of days.
