very informative, thank you. ive just bought a job lot and its got a bank of the levers in it, i remember seeing them as a child on layouts a shows. but now i know what there used for thanks to this video. p.s its a bank of 20 levers/switches

My current project is fitting a DCC controller (bus powered) to a point motor to control a set of points without any wiring beneath a baseboard but on a clear plastic 1mm sheet over a trackmat. After seeing your video, I'm going to try and connect the controller to an R.663 and signal to try and get a semaphore signal for the siding.
Great idea. I have just picked something up at a recent show that hornby used to produce and it takes these motors one step further. Look out for it in a future episode. Cheers
@Aidans Railways I've now motorised 3 signals and they work a treat. The motors don't always work properly because of tarnishing of the contacts, but I easily remedied that. Less successful was stopping the magnet getting stuck at the top of the solenoid. Years of dirt must be at the top and I can't access without unwrapping the solenoid. I'm thinking of giving it a bath in a jewellery cleaner.
Very much enjoying your videos and channel. These are very nice products and while agree that Hornby could do something, I imagine the issue with these is that kids will be tempted to see what happens if you hold the lever when its buzzing, only to witness the tell-tale plume of smoke rising from the motor that shows they just burnt out the windings! A simple capacitive discharge unit built in would prevent this, ahem Hornby, hope you're listening!!
According to the man in my local model shop, R664 was discontinued because it had a bad reliability record and was a poor seller. I have installed one of these R664 to operate a semaphore signal and have found the action to be extremely weak. Oscar Paisley says the earlier Triang X404 are better. I think the wiring inside is susceptible to corrosion.
"If only I had Known".. Must be the reason that not many people used the base plates? I personally have installed many solenoids on points, but never saw any diagrams for installing them on signals as well as points... I'm sure that if there had been diagrams on the solenoid instructions, showing attachment to signals, there would have been more operating signals on layouts...
Dear Derek, despite this, many organisations cannot resist the temptation to do so, and unfortunately, more often than not, do so rather badly, to the extent that, in some cases, the "replacement" is an unmitigated disaster.
Hi. I hope you will involve young Aiden in the restoration of the semaphore signals and not just do it for him - he'll never learn of really get involved in the hobby otherwise. I never understand why people are reticent about saying what they paid for stuff - it's all part of the video content. I do understand when it's a private individual and it's a personal sale, but when it's from a public auction site like eBay (there, I've said it!) - whether the vendor is an individual or a company) I see no reason to withhold the price.
Hi Paul. Yes aidan is very much involved however it takes a bit longer as it can sometimes be like a massive information overload. Sometimes i choose not to mention the price either because i have been requested not to buy the vendor or because sometimes it's just not worth the comment filtering where people just don't believe it lol. In the case of these motors they were just badly listed and i believe this helped winning the aucton to be fair. Cheers Paul
Good to be reminded how simple the system was.
Good video. 👍
Happy modelling

Very instructive
I still use one of these motors on my layout. At one time hornby used to stamp, "built in Britain" on the coaches.
Enjoyed your video you put together. Hope there more to come.
Thank you! Will do!👍😀

Thank you for this I have been able to use two of my otherwise redundant 664 motors with two signals and aquired two 663's for more
Thank you. Glad the content of this video was of help to you. Very much appreciated. Cheers
They look quite good, I need to get some signals when I start doing a layout.
It's nice to find a old bit of kit that still works and does exactly what is says on the box. Cheers David 👍😀
Hola buen dia muchas gracias por subir el video abrazo grande
Gracias, Miguel 👍😀
Nice video as always.
I appreciate that
Hi ben
Hope you and your family are well
This will be useful to some one
Very well made video too
Keep safe arp

Hi John. Yes i totally agree and i prefer to use the gaugemaster switches for them as well. Cheers 👍😀
good vid of you signels i got loads s of the signels in a box thanks lee
Glad you enjoyed. Thank you Lee👍😀

Thank you Allen this is great information. I used to have the triang versions. Mine were metal casing. Cheers

Although a lot of people knew, so many had no idea about their use with signals as well. Cheers

Totally agree 👍

The most important thing in this video are the words 'MADE IN ENGLAND'. What happened next?
