This is soooooooooo Awesome!!! Infinite thanks and gratitude to you, Home Repair Tutor! I'm feel so confident now, and know I can do so much more for so much less $$$ than I ever imagined with the many videos you have so kindly shared. I agree with the person who said to wear eye protection'. I also suggest wearing a mask such as the ones designed to eliminate the inhaling of paint fumes, etc. as the dust and allergens in our carpet from the 70's has been creating terrible allergies, so we're remodeling from the floor up! I'm definitely signing up for your newsletter! Yay!!! I'm sooo happy!!! "We can't afford that." has been removed from my family's vocabulary !!
Great job and very professional (not counting that u forgot your gloves LOL). I like that you show exactly how to start and you flip the carpet over and then cut it. I wanted to know if I have to remove the baseboards first in order to get a corner of the carpet. A video I watched, the person had it ripped off the wall without showing how she got the carpet off the wall in the first place, and every comment was positive. for me the video was incomplete. Thanks a lot.
Adimaejoon thanks so much. And yes, I should have used gloves, haha. You shouldn't have to remove the baseboards. You can simply cut the little square out of the carpet and go from there. But I think you were just mentioning this since the other video didn't. Hope your project goes smoothly :)
I'm a 13 year old girl and I did this to my room all by myself. It wasn't hard. The difference though is it was concrete under the carpet, and there were nails instead of staples which made it easy for me. I am studying to be an interior designer and a architect. My first project will be my own home. I have to go to Lowe's and decide what I should use for the floor.🖌💼💳📅📌🛠🏘 (random emojis😂)
Newsflash: if you buy a new house, usually built by contractors or commercial builders, anything that wasn't built for "yourself", it will have substandard EVERYTHING! Corners will have been cut everywhere. Sure, it'll look nice but you'll soon be redoing everything. This is how houses with carpet came about. No sane person with even modest mental faculties would install carpet in their own house. Carpet is an abomination :-) Or aluminum wiring. Im f14 and I finally got tired of my parents saying "they'd do it eventually" so I finally decided to do it myself! This was a very simple video that helped me a lot and it wasn't confusing at all!!! Turns out I already had beautiful cherry wood underneath that ugly carpet!
I almost had same thing lol beautiful old wood floor, I had to sand my ass off.., it had some staining from liquids, so , I picked a darker stain to match the stains..then polyurethane the hell out of it. I left the nails and nail holes for character. The house was over 100 years old. I'm ALOT older but my first project.i did..
Home Depot calls it a "industrial floor scraper" and it's truly a lifesaver. It will yank out a majority of the staples. The few staples it doesn't catch, you can go back and pull manually with pliers. Try to scrape WITH the wood grain so you don't take chunks out of your sub floor.

@Lauralee LA Brie Oh wow!!! Is it just cracked, or is it broken into chunks? You can put down a skim coat of new concrete if it isn't broken into big wobbly chunks. At least I think you could.
Almost 8 years ago you made this & this is still the easiest video I’ve seen . Pulling my carpet up to put dont the peel & stick vinyl flooring & you just made it sooo much easier.
Thanks so much for this - especially the folding/cutting method! I managed to clear 2 bedrooms, 2 hallways and a staircase of carpet and underlay in just a few hours!
Thank you for this great very clear tutorial! I was able to do a room in an hour. Using your technique. And course help from Jesus to push me to do it!. Thank you again.
I’ve been installing carpet for 7 years and the best way to remove the staples and tack strips is to scrape them up with a stand up scraper, it’s faster and way easier on the body but great vide 👍🏽
One tip I saw on another video, was using a floor scraper to take the staples out of the floor. Much faster and easier. I like the folding and cutting and then taping up the sections to be hauled out. Great tips, thanks!
If you're a DIYer, if you have a hoe (garden tool, not a reference to another human), that works great to scrape up staples. I myself am a contractor and have a stand up scraper, if you're not opposed to spending $30 on one, that's the way to go. Also, no need to fold your carpet over, 95% of the time you can just release it from the tackstrip around the entire perimeter and cut the top of the carpet into strips. The only time you will have diffuculty cutting through the top is if you're carpet is so old it is saturated with dirt, or you didn't vacuum first, which I recommend doing.
70s?? Was it shag ?? I bet that was nasty . Just doing my house I got and the carpet is nasty and was down since 2009 and it was bad bad . I can’t imagine 1970s lol .
Great video, thanks for making this. You really broke it down into simple terms and I was able to clear out my basement's nasty carpet in a single day's work. I know this is almost 10 years old now but I'm going to be looking through your other videos for more DIY instrux.
Its amazing how many things I have either learned or saved timed doing after just one or two video's. This was one of them. The tip to start in the corner was great as the carpet I was removed was significantly thicker and heavier than I expected and despite my planning on doing sections, by removing the corner of my chosing and then taking it from there, gave me complete freedom to complete this task very efficiently. As for the staples, I used up using a spade shovel and saved a lot of time although I was shocked as how many I kept finding thereafter. Thank you for sharing!
Hey, I'm a 63yr old woman in SW England - just about to get my living room redecorated and new carpet, first time in 20 years. Big upheaval needing lots of effort shifting book cases, furniture etc. The carpet estimator came yesterday, they can remove the carpet but will charge me and your video has inspired me to do it myself. I'd already had a little peep under the corner of the carpet and sussed out what I needed to do. It's a gross, manky carpet and needs to go. I'm gonna be the one who takes it out and away, ready for the nice new one coming soon. Cheaper than moving house lol. Thanks for your inspiration.
@@CatherineMartin-kz7cp On an £1800 new carpet estimate, I was quoted around £80 for carpet/underlay removal and disposal & yes, they do take it away. I've now taken up the old carpet & underlay which was quick and quite easy if you use a Stanley knife to cut it into strips about 120cm wide. The rolls fitted into the back of my car with the seats down and I took them to the local recycling centre. The worst bit by far is getting the gripper rods up round the edges - esp as they were hammered into a concrete floor. Be very careful of your eyes (wear protection) and your hands too.
@Tippsy561 You have inspired me. I’m 20 years your junior, yet I suspect you’re much more spry & younger than me, in action! Good tips but I would have let someone come and take that carpet intact to reuse as it looks to be in great shape. I just ripped all the carpet out of my house that was installed 20-30 years ago. The underside had round pee stains everywhere and there was about half an inch of dirt under the pad in the heavy traffic areas!
Thanks, I recently bought my first home and have had to learn things as I go, so this helps a ton. I'd love to see a how-to on doing laminate flooring, as that is hopefully going to be the next big project.
Hah, 13 years of a kid-to-teen spilling soda, water and even red Kool-Aid on his bedroom floor here. Someone would have to die on it for it to look worse.
This video was very helpful! I bought my first house in October and have been putting off refinishing the original 1920s hardwood floor (in one of the bedrooms that the previous owner had carpeted and then removed the carpet but left the staples and tack strips--go figure). I wasn't sure where to begin for the staple removal. Thanks!
Wow, you made the steps so easy, gave clear instruction and the video is not long! I am a single mom with a house to run and repair on my own and now I will be able to handle some of these tasks on my own! thank you!!
Thank you for this video, I managed to remove carpet in 3 rooms all by myself. Thank you for the tips. The staple removing is very tedious and you get knee pain, but it saved us some money
I just thought to mention something very important here. There's "potential" asbestos within the "underlay" materials, underneath old carpet, laid down prior to the end of the 1980s, but of course this varies across the world & in some countries, the laws to stop asbestos use beneath carpets, may not even exist, so it's always an important idea to have this checked out by a professional, prior to removing the carpet. In this instance, it's always better to be safe than sorry. Ps. Where i live, this is the date/period whereby the asbestos beneath carpets was banned, hence why i made mention of this, but again, your country's laws may well be different, so if you are unsure, please check out your own respective laws surrounding this.
Mine carpet is 3/4 year old living with big family kids comes with shoes mine is smelling soo groos I told my husband that I am removing carpet and he is acting like is new 😆
Thank you for this easy video on how to remove carpet. We made sure we had all the tools you suggested. We recently removed old carpet after many years. Your video was a tremendous help. Thank you again.
you can keep the baseboards in place and space the laminate accordingly, e.g. leave 1/4" gap between laminate and baseboards. BUT read the laminate directions for specific spacing. Then you can cover that space with shoe molding, e.g. quarter round or smaller.
Awesome tips I am so going to do this to our front room it is just a sitting room not bug but my youngest has totally ruined the furniture and carpet in there. I need to pull it up makes me feel so depressed so going to get rod of the lounge suit and then the carpet thanks it is on a concrete block (Hubby may freak out but I can't wait)
I really like how this prepares for certain conditions, so can avoid it later on. I was just planning on removing the carpet and putting in wooden floors. But this has made take chance to fix the imperfections of the dump of a house I have to live in. Unlike my useless father (which I am sympathetic towards despite for his barbaric behaviour) I am going to fix the house. I am unable to continue living the same way without changing.
I am 69 years old and rent an old farmhouse. I caused a patch in the hallway to rot the carpet (its a long story.) I bought some good unused carpet at a place where you buy all kinds of junk. I want to rip up the whole of the ruined carpet area (about 6 feet x 4 feet) and replace it. I cannot understand though why would one need to rip up the underlay if one is going to lay new carpet on it? I am not in the pink of health and the whole thing is daunting to me. I have no one to help me, but I think I may be able to borrow the tools and get the job done. Thanks for your clear advice.
Cutting the carpet into smaller pieces was my Tip of the Video. 🤔 I’ll remember that. 😃 I’m about to start a DIY remodeling project to save some 💸💰💸. After the carpeted rooms are finished, the kitchen and cabinets should be easy to remove. Thanks for sharing a very helpful video.
sunny sunshinee Well the point is to tear stuff up. Putting the new carpet on, Maybe get some help or a pro. It's not that hard, but it's pretty easy to mess up on the cutting.
That's the fun part is messing up. Then you learn from the mistakes. I have taken the carpet out of my kitchen, bathroom, laundry room and a small walk in closet. For some reason the previous owner carpeted the entire house and with my two boys those areas had to go. Lamite floors were way easier to clean. I did most of it with out my husband's help while he was at work. It's just getting over that fear of failure or not looking good. I started my carpet riping up in the small walk in closet. It helped boost my confidence to do the bigger rooms. Plus it's cheaper to fix a small room than a larger room if do make mistakes cutting. Have a great day 🙂
I use a medium size spackle tool to get under those hard to grab staples. And I use the same spackle trowel or whatever it's called to get under the carpet tack, followed by a flathead screwdriver to pry each section up. It's a lot easier than trying to hammer a crowbar underneath!
My pad was spot-glued to the cement floor. Judging by what a pain in the ass that pulling staples looked to be, I'm no longer cussing about having to flat-blade shovel-carve the old padding off my floor. Instead of cutting a notch in the carpet to pull up the carpet, I did all the cutting before pulling up anything, and grabbed the carpet with pliers long enough to get it off the tack strip.
I used a skateboard to sit on to roll back and forth removing staples, it worked pretty well. My knees cant take the floor
Great Idea woman!
You should be in the X Games
Or if you don't have knee pads, use a piece of the old carpet.
Lanette Holloway thanks for the tip😁😁😁😁

Thank you for this video, I managed to remove carpet in 3 rooms all by myself. Thank you for the tips.
The staple removing is very tedious and you get knee pain, but it saved us some money
4:33 my dad and I use a scraper it’s way easier and faster
2023 and I needed to do exactly this and your video was very useful and helped me a lot was a bit easier in my case, since the floor was concrete.
THANK YOU for this instructive, well said video! Great tips, and I'm actually looking forward to removing some carpet now. 😁
Thank you! You’ve given me the confidence and knowledge to do this! Well you and the 13 yr old girl in the comments! 😂👍
This is awsome... This man knows what he is talking about ...
Good tip witht hte stanley knife- having had several brain bleeds I have forgotten some simple tasks
I’m planing to rip out the carpet and install new laminate flooring. What should I do with the base boards?
you can keep the baseboards in place and space the laminate accordingly, e.g. leave 1/4" gap between laminate and baseboards. BUT read the laminate directions for specific spacing. Then you can cover that space with shoe molding, e.g. quarter round or smaller.
Awesome tips I am so going to do this to our front room it is just a sitting room not bug but my youngest has totally ruined the furniture and carpet in there.
I need to pull it up makes me feel so depressed so going to get rod of the lounge suit and then the carpet thanks it is on a concrete block
(Hubby may freak out but I can't wait)
I really like how this prepares for certain conditions, so can avoid it later on. I was just planning on removing the carpet and putting in wooden floors. But this has made take chance to fix the imperfections of the dump of a house I have to live in. Unlike my useless father (which I am sympathetic towards despite for his barbaric behaviour) I am going to fix the house. I am unable to continue living the same way without changing.
+Michelle Herrick keep your head up, you can do any project you set out to do 👍
I like floating floors. Waterproof. Cheaper than wood. More durable.
You know, I didn't think the camera vibration was that bad; but if it's bothering you there are plenty of free video stabilization filters on the web.
How did it go for you? I wouldn't worry about replacing the pad if it's in good shape, Linda.
Cutting the carpet into smaller pieces was my Tip of the Video. 🤔 I’ll remember that. 😃
I’m about to start a DIY remodeling project to save some 💸💰💸. After the carpeted rooms are finished, the kitchen and cabinets should be easy to remove.
Thanks for sharing a very helpful video.
He can even be a great Hollywood star! Great video... thank you!
Thanks, although I'd rather be on RUclips than in Hollywood, haha
You were there for hours pulling staples like that 🤣..get u a pole scraper it’ll save 5 years of your life guaranteed or your money back 😂
We cut our carpet into rectangles the size of throw rugs to be used in garage, truck bed when moving, etc.
Good idea.
Is there a video about removal when padding is glued to concrete?
What if i want to do stained concrete
i want to add another tip, if it's really dirty (dusty), wear a mask, otherwise your throat is going to feel funny.
Best carpet removal video! Thanks!
Alicia Wall thanks so much, glad you liked it. Hope the video helped :D
I can't understand why do carpets are so popular in some countries. It is a very unsanitary flooring solution to me.
You can also use the old pad as kneepads.
I have a question. Is it normal to have that black around each nail in the tacking strips? I'm worried it's black mould
Good stuff man you save me some money. Big ups dude......
Thanks invesible101
I got mine fitted for $50 but I had to take the. Old carpet of first
Great video. Traditional carpet sucks. Those tack strips look like a bitch.
Fantastic info. thank you so much for sharing, man!
+Alessandro Morelli thank you, glad it helped 👍
Awesome video. Thank you for all the information 🙏
I really want to try this but I'm scared I'll mess it up.
+sunny sunshinee don't worry, this project is pretty hard to mess up 👍
If you're a women, leave it alone because you would most like mess it up.
If you don't know the difference between women and woman, you probably shouldn't say anything.
sunny sunshinee
Well the point is to tear stuff up.
Have a great day 🙂
If I had carpet like his I wouldn’t need to see this vid lmao
+steven joel it was worse than what you could see
I hope you’re a teacher
LOVED that open-mouthed thumbs up there, guy. :) Seriously though, this has been very helpful. You demystified the process for me. Thanks, Jeff.
Thank you so much. I'm doing work around my Mom's condo on a budget and felt a little overwhelmed. This was EXTREMELY helpful.
Awesome! Super pumped it was helpful; btw, you're a great daughter :)
Love this video, man. I like that you kept in your mistakes and knowing how to fix the squeaks is a gift from the gods!
Hes so cute
Oh puleez! He is likely married! Even if he isn't why do you find it needful to comment about it?! We're here to learn!
Yeah don't let his husband hear how cute you think he is.
You don't think?
A flathead screwdriver works for staples also push and pry
I use a medium size spackle tool to get under those hard to grab staples. And I use the same spackle trowel or whatever it's called to get under the carpet tack, followed by a flathead screwdriver to pry each section up. It's a lot easier than trying to hammer a crowbar underneath!
My pad was spot-glued to the cement floor. Judging by what a pain in the ass that pulling staples looked to be, I'm no longer cussing about having to flat-blade shovel-carve the old padding off my floor. Instead of cutting a notch in the carpet to pull up the carpet, I did all the cutting before pulling up anything, and grabbed the carpet with pliers long enough to get it off the tack strip.
whew, that was quite a project!!
