WEST ALPS OFFROAD MOTORCYCLE TOUR on a KTM 1290 Super Adventure S

- This 6-Day off-road adventure in the Italian West Alps checks off one of my bucket list trips on a motorcycle. Since I switched to an adventure bike I have been dreaming of riding these fantastic roads in the Italian Alps. For those of us that explore the world 10 days at a time this is a trip that is very accessable to us Europeans yet only few people end up experiencing it.
This 2-hour film summarizes our adventures from 2020 which included several motorcycle break-downs and rescue missions for the bikes, shows the amazing camaraderie among off-road motorcycle riders and the beautiful scenery in the less travelled areas of the Alps. See us struggle with some of the more difficult sections for big adventure bikes and share the joy when we meet up with Valle and friends on some of the most scenic places in the Alps.

Epic ! Perhaps one THE best big adventure bike movies. You guys sure know how to brake bikes 🤪 The crew should "shake and bake" new bikes for KTM and BMW. The coolant leaks are no surprise. I own two KTMs. Oscar worthy video footage. 5 Stars. Very enjoyable. Absolutely amazing scenery.
Thank you very much for the kind words. Glad you liked our adventure. We have gotten a bit more careful with how we tread our equipment now 😂😂
Thanks for a an extremely professional film , you should be very proud of work .
Chris
Thank you very much Chris. I am glad you like video 😉
Great video! What stunning views! Thanks for putting together and sharing with the offroad community. Couple of tips: tons of videos on RUclips on how to tow a bike (the way you guys did it is very dangerous); easy to start a bike with no battery--tow, put in 2d or 3rd gear and let go of the clutch and it should start (unless it had some other issue). Looking forward to a video of your next adventure! Cheers
Thank you very much Tom. There plenty of lessons to take away from this for our next off-road adventure- incl the towing technique 😉 it made for some entertaining content but best not to it like this again. I am fine if the next tour is less eventful 😎 cheers
My arms, hips, knees and back were tired after watching this one 😳😳😳. We have all the mountains in the world almost in western Canada. But the roads are very limited unlike in Europe. You’re a brave soul for taking those types of bikes up those trails 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you very much Colin. Of course there is a limit what is possible on these large bikes and smaller adventure bikes or single cylinder enduros will get you further. I am still amazed what is possible though with these beasts 😂 good to have help nearby when things don’t go as planned. Cheers - Oliver
This was astonishing to say the least I must admit after watching you guys put your heart and soul in this adventure of all kinds of obstacles along with the dilemmas of breakdowns and not giving up on your destination and even having to pull one another literally through all sorts of terrains to an awesome accomplishment! I had to subscribe to your channel to look forward to your next video because I love this kind of adventures!
Thank you very much for the kind words and welcome aboard 😉
What a great ride! Thank you for sharing these great moments!
Absolutely- thank you for watching 😉
Wow, what an epic adventure! Most enjoyable 2hours I ever spent on RUclips. Ride safe.
Wow. Thank you very much for the kind words - I am very happy to hear that you enjoyed the video. All the best to you 😎👍

great video , after watching it all my body hurt . so much rocks , you all must have slept like logs after a day of riding . good job .
Thank you very much Wayne - some of the tracks were quite the workout on the heavy bikes 😂
Have watched this chapter by chapter over the last week, holy crap this is epic! So much here, the breakdowns, the spare parts for a 25 year old BMW, the fact that you all just got in with it and instead of letting it spoil your trip, it's now part of an amazing adventure as you were able to overcome all obstacles.
Add to that the simply stunning videography & an excellent mix of commentary, I'm blown away.
Well done sir, you've earned another subscriber & I look forward to your next adventure 👍
Thank you very much for the kind words - glad to know you liked the video and welcome to the channel 😉cheers, Oliver
Großartiges Video, großartige Tour und großartige Kumpels. thx ciao Haro
Vielen Dank Haro. Wir planen schon den nächsten ACT. Griechenland oder Pyrenäen stehen hoch im Kurs 😉
Truly epic, amazing riding there thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much- glad you enjoyed it 😎
Amazing trip, spectacular scenery, 4K is a must!
Thank you very much- looks great on a big screen too 😉
Didn’t think I’m gonna be able to watch all video, but I did ♥️ Loved it. Big thank you for the effort you took to film and put all it together. Another huge thanks for the description and all the places you mentioned. An awesome way to get some ideas for my next trip 🙏
Thank you very much for the kind words. It’s a long video and a big time commitment to watch it. Glad you liked it and I hope that you will experience some of the tracks yourself soon 😉
There are very few videos over half an hour on RUclips that I finish. I was riveted throughout this one. You are a talented filmmaker and you have rekindled my love of motorbike off-road travel (which I lost 20 years ago after a bad accident). Thank you so much for providing English commentary as well. You have gained a new subscriber :)
Thank you very much for the kind words Jason! Glad to hear that you liked the video - it is a long one to sit through 😉 cheers, Oliver

Wow what an Adventure the views are stunning. I use to live in Europe but I was too young to ride. Now i get to ride in Canadian and American Rockies
Thank you very much ;-) The Rockies are a great place to ride too. Plenty of space in North America for riding off-road
Watched every min of it.. Reignited my passion for bike tours. Did 1 after 15yrs to KL with my wife though mostly purely highways and occasional rural areas. The off-road U guys did were insane.. Keep riding, bros!

Fantastic video; thanks for sharing. Can't help commenting on bike selection - an Africa Twin would have been trouble free!!!!
Cheers
Simon (Australia)
Thank you very much Simon. Glad you enjoyed the video 😉 I could do with a little less trouble next time but the drama made for an interesting adventure (and good content for this video 😉) cheers Oliver
I was dooing the same with an crf1000 dct and we had an old 750 Africa Twin in the group as well. Awsome bikes for this terrain. We even went up and down a lot of single trials.
@@franzschreiber1646 absolutely- these larger tracks are well suited for all bikes. There are smaller single trails that start to limit the accessibility for the large bikes. Does not mean some are doing or anyway 😉
Loved every minute of it poor Thomas 😢
Thank you very much 😉 Thomas is fine now 😂
Amazing Views, Videos und Music. Love it

Fantastic video, great footage and some stunning shots ..... the Alps sure is a magical place... I'm off to the Pyrenees next Wed ... been too long cos of all this covid bollocks
Thank you very much- enjoy the ride to the Pyrenees 👍 I am off to Italy in 2 weeks 😎
Nice edit! Take care & ride safe!
Thank you very much 😎👍
Well done Oliver. Very nice edit of your trip. Sometimes I felt sorry for the bikes, you guys pushed them on some parts hard. Results we saw for example on Thomas bikes with the broken radiator. But on the other hand it must have been super fun. A few parts of these videos I knew already from your previous videos but in this complete travel edit I liked them much more. Keep on going strong and stay healthy ;)
Grüße vom Max aus Berlin
Thank you very much Max. It’s probably better to take it a bit easier with the bikes and not ride them like the marketing videos suggest 😂😂
Einfach nur GEIL👍👍👍👍👍👍👌👌👌👌👌👌
Vielen Dank Toni 😎👍
Beautifull channel! From Ita🇮🇹
Thank you! 😊
Go adventure riding they said, it will be fun they said. Membership to the gym not necessary. Great video, and it convinced me buying a larger ADv bike is also not necessary.
Thank you very much - this stuff is fun on large ADV bike but better suited for smaller bikes. Less weight is better 😉
Wish I could do this. Was the best parts of my life. Only for a moment.
What happened?
Very nice video! Did Assietta from south to north last year. Even got lost in Sportina (much thanks to the GPS) and ended up in an enduro track on the way down. Made Assietta a walk in the park. Good thing I was going downhill! Next time I'll try from north, and then via Colle delle Finestre. Your friend was brave to ride GS without crash bars. I wouldn't.
Thought about Col de Sommelier but since traveling solo decided it was too risky. Maybe some other time.
Thank you very much 😉 you have to experience the Col de Sommelier- it was one of my favorites and you can do it solo as you will not be completely alone on the mountain 😎 if you are comfortable with hairpin turns the only the upper section gets a bit technical because of larger rocks. Cheers
thanks for this video.
Its on my list to start exploring the world on motorcycle or off road jeep...not sure yet to be honest
But seeing all this awesome footage makes me impatient...plan is in the making for a few years now but always something comes up...
So i am hoping to finally get out next year and start the same adventure as you are doing.
Thank you very much- I hope you get to enjoy this area soon. Many of the tracks are also accessible with a 4x4 but depending on the size of your motorcycle there are more options 😉
Hey friend all your riding mates live closer to my home than to Berlin: Tübingen, Heidenheim, Munich. Perhaps that is a sign to move more south...just kidding !! Wish you a nice season...
Well, you have a point 😎 The first day going south is usually not very spectacular for me! I hope you will have a great season too my friend! Everything is going to be better this year 😉
Nice video! and some good crashing skills as well! ;-)
Thank you very much 😎👍
Perfect
thank you!
super video
Thank you Stefan
Now I know why KTM and BMW guys always ride together in packs, to help with all the break downs. Joking of course but I ride mostly solo and I’ve never had any issues with my Japanese bikes
That is exactly right - and we can give each other sh!t about too 😂 All of the breakdowns were really our fault and are results of crashes (or neglet to change the battery in a timely manner). The radiator problem on the KTM 1190 adventure was from the aftermath of a road crash the year before where Thomas and I were riding in France.
Finally someone put it together!Well done buddy!Keep up the great work!...Is there connecting offroad track between Cuneo and Monte Jafferau?
Thank you very much- there are tracks between Cuneo and Mont Jafferau but not the whole way. We skipped them though as it took us a while even on tarmac to get to our 2. Base Camp.
Looks like it was an eventful trip! Well done. And the video quality is awesome. Where was your base camp?
Thank you very much - glad you liked it. The main base camp called "Gran Bosco" in Salbertrand - great place to stay if you want to explore the area without bringing your luggage
Awesome video. Saw it on my TV. What a pleasant experience. Thanks for the time and effort you had to put all this fantastic adventure together.
From what i saw, most of the bikes had the Mitas EO-7 the standard or the Dakar version? Some BMW had the TKC 80?
What's your feedback on these tires?
On road tire pressure?
Looking forward for the next videos.
P. S. : Glad you spoke in english, so we could understand. 👍
Thank you very much for your kind feedback! Nice to know you appreciated the language choice - the previous commenter complained that it wasn't all in German 😉 As for the my tires - I had the E-07+ in the non-dakar version (there is also a E-07 - without the plus for dual sport bikes). For my upcoming trip I really wanted to try something different but ended up choosing the E-07+ again but this time in the Dakar version. It will be an onroad/offroad tour with a total of 6300 km so I am hoping a fresh set of E-07+ Dakar will last for the duration of the trip. If you are interested in a more detailed feedback on the tire check out this video ruclips.net/video/ElDSbr62HgA/видео.html
So, both KTMs were on the same Mitas and the big BMWs had the Anakee Wild - a good tire but with much softer rubber compound. If you are not careful with your gas hand the tire wears quick that is why we had to change Chris rear tire halfway through the trip 😂 The vintage BMW had the TKC 80.
I'm now trying 07-Dakar on KTM 1290 Super Adventure S. A week ago I was on gravel in Croatia. Great in the field, but I won't buy them anymore. We drove 2000km and I have 4 mm less sample. At higher speeds, the front wheel is unstable, as is accelerating acceleration. Otherwise they are great in the field.
Wow great video guys, very well done! Question…when towing the bike with the dead battery did you try having him pull in the clutch, put the bike in 3rd gear and pop the clutch? Should have stated.
Hello Oliver, thank you for sharing this new summary/version of your 2020 ride. Most of us off road riders share one passion: motorcycles! I am so happy for you and your group that all/most went well! I cannot wait for your new adventure(s). How is your shoulder doing? Cheers
Thank you very much Patrick - it took me a long time to finally put all the clips together in one long film. Gave me a chance to tweak the narration and music a bit - now I have this memory for the days in my life where I will not be able to ride anymore 😉 the shoulder is getting better - everyday tasks are no problem but mobility and strength are at 70%
That does not keep me from planing an awesome year on the bike - more touring than ever before plus a few off-road events with the Enduro Action Team. I will leave for Italy end of April to ride some off-road tracks (ACT Italy) with a small group and the do a week Solo on Sardinia and Corsica. 😉
@@MotoVibes You will have a fantastic time riding Sardinia and Corsica! I am sure that you know Sardinia is a favorite destination for German bikers! Enjoy your trip, I wish I could join you o:(((
@@patrickcooper9641 Yes, I do - since 2018 I know why too ;-) it will be a short visit this time as I will focus on Corsica this time around. The endless curvy roads in Sardinia are just heaven. This time I will try to find some off-road tracks in Sardinia but the onroad parts are just amazing too
Super 🤩.
Austria, France and Switzerland are very nice aswell, for your next adventure 😀
Absolutely - I have been to all thee countries- last September I did a tour through the central Alps and I hope I will get back to France soon too 😉
@@MotoVibes well then you could give Spain or Turkey a go
@@c.g.c2067 Spain is high on the list - I have only been there once on bike. Turkey would beg great too. Probably a trip where I would need a bit more time than usual. Morocco and Iceland are high on my bucket list 😉
@@MotoVibes i mean if you like off road Italy is not your best option
@@MotoVibeswhy not Siberia or Mongolia?
Awesome ride. That’s why they’re "adventure" bikes. Any chance to get the routes/locations/GPS coordinates of your trip? I’d love to visit at least some of those places…
Thank you very much - glad you like the video - Track and Tour data is available - use this link shara.li/c/rcdeMdXy31 or the one in the description of the video.
@@MotoVibes thanks a lot! I didnt see the description… Is it safe to say that your KTM was the only one that made it with no technical issues? ;]
Noticed you had spoke wheels on the S, wonder how cast wheels would have done. Great Camera work.
Thank you very much Stuart. The spoked wheels were the most important modification to get the bike off-road ready - I had a few hits where I was happy to not have cast alloy wheels- see this video for all the modifications if you are interested ruclips.net/video/_yjVpDS4UqE/видео.html
Im about halfway the video so far. It looks like a seriously fun vacation! Very nice footage and montage as well.
Time for me to get some offroad training in my heavy adv bike and book a offroad vacation. May i ask where u booked this?
Thank you very much 😉 glad you like it. I did all my off-road training with the Enduro Action Team. Aside from the fact that I learned a lot it’s just fun to ride your bike in the enduro park. They have most of the major adventure bikes for rentals now in case you don’t want to ride your own or come from farther away.
If you want some insight what you can expect there I have a whole playlist now ruclips.net/p/PL8Hxk-UJjuvyZV-rtlvv8dPEeRku9CPzO
Amazing routes and scenery!! Well done!! What time of the year you did this trip?
Thank you very much 😉 this was mid September
Perfect ❤️.
I also have 2 question .
First did you use the same tire pression on the dirt ?
And why you didn't continue to France ?
Yes - same tire Pressure as onroad. The grip on gravel is good enough- low tire pressure may risk damaging the rims if you hit a rock or pot hole. I would have liked to go to France - we just did not have the time on this trip.
Hey…been engrossed in your excellent Alps Off-road vids over the last few days!…just moved to France from Scotland (defo no off-roading possible there!) and am planning an Alps trip in Sept ‘24 including most of the routes you guys did…I completed the Pyrénées ACT with a friend in Sept ‘22 but the Alps looks much more spectacular and suitable for a solo trip. One question - can you share the name of the campsite you used as I also intend on basing myself somewhere central to avoid being luggaged-up on the bike while off-road…keep up the awesome vids :)
Thank you very much 😉 the camp site is called Gran Bosco. It’s a good starting point to experience many of the well known off-road tracks in this region and a good place to meet likeminded off-road enthusiasts 😉
long way round to the repair shop.
indeed ;-)
