- A simple instructional video on how to replace the steering wheel and controls in any E39 5-series BMW.
Tools required: T30 Torx Driver, 16 mm Socket, four inch socket extender, and a flat head screwdriver.

you can just remove the screws from the sides, no need to turn the steering at all, i've done this in the junk yard multiple times
E39 For Life haha I was thinking the same unplugging the battery the first time was pointless lol
Great install video. I have the exact same M sport steering wheel and thanks to you my install went perfectly smooth. Took about 30 min.
FYI: With a little muscle you can turn the steering wheel without constantly reconnecting the battery. Also, a larger ratchet (3/4") will give you more torc so there should be no need for an extension PVC pipe.
The new one you fitted isnt a 2002 model year steering wheel, its the one from the pre facelift m5's before 2000.. so why?
Leave the battery connected until you get both screws out. Then remove the battery
If you Google "2002 M5 interior" you will see that the wheel is different design than his current wheel, meaning that airbag is also different design. So if he upgraded to the facelifted steering wheel, that would cause him to have to purchase the new airbag design, which cost around $475 on the low end
To me work T27 I don't know.

The older style wheel? Yes, as long as it came from an E39 produced after May, 1999.
Good video. Question: any reason you went with the 2000 M steering wheel vs upgrading to the nicer 2001-2003 steering wheel?

Hi, I have a E39 pre facelift one without multi-function steering wheel. If I change to a newer wheel, will the buttons be functioning?
I am not sure if the pre-wiring and logic is there for the multi-function wheel. If it's a USA car, it probably does have that ready to go. You should remove the airbag and check for the wiring/connector for the multi-function panel.

I will try to replace my steering wheel on my 2003 525i,It has the m wheel now , but I bought the m wheel with flat bottom, but I was wondering if OR when I disconnect the battery, will I loose all the codes on the car? last time I remove the battery the car did not star, I had to tow the car to the dealer, and paid close to a thousand dollars to have all the codes reinstall, and took two weeks to get car back .bmw dealer Rockville, Maryland. Any comments or suggestions? I'll appreciate them
Codes? Disconnecting the battery shouldn't harm the car at all.

what about the heated steering wheel button along with other ones i have on my steering wheel ?
If the wheel you install doesn't have the heated function, it simply won't work. You can reinstall a heated wheel again later and then it will work.

Plug and play on any E46 made after 5/99, so I think thats all of them!

For the state two airbag, you'd need to replace the column, stalks, airbag module, and maybe more.

Can a dual stage airbag steerign wheel (03/99) work on a pre 99 e39 ?
Single stage airbags only work in single stage airbag cars, pre 3 or 4 of 1999 build dates. The steering WHEEL itself- I think- will work in any car. I think it's just the airbags that need to be matched up.
***** Thanks, I`m thinking about adding paddles to an 97 540i, I`ve seen it done before by a guy in Malasya (round 2 stage airbag to a single steage e39) but he didn`t get into much details. Apparently you have to connect only one wire coming from the airbag.

+MJ Dragon Yes, it is possible, but features like the variable redline LEDs and the oil temperature won't work without modifications. The new cluster would require coding too to avoid triggering the tamper dot since the mileage wouldn't match up with the DME and LCM (which also store the mileage and compare against the cluster frequently)
