removemouth This is very true. They never aired this show when i was a kid myself though, but i still learned about it a few years ago when i've been an Au Pair in a Finnish family. The dad had all episodes of the Moomins on his tablet and he told me it's alright to let the children watch an episode from time to time. When we watched this particular episode and Groke appeared the little boy i was watching over started shaking with his entire body and quietly sobbing. And usually he acted as a brave child! To this day i'm so sorry for the shock he got :(
Serbian too. I remember watching this scene when I was like 5 or 6 and I was terrified because the part when Groke was saying she'll come back sounded even creepier when dubbed to Serbian language
i haven't read the books since i was a kid and i've only seen the bits of the animated series here. i feel like there's a point in the books where you end up feeling some sympathy for the Groke. she's not exactly evil but more like the personification of loneliness.
@@veronikafohlova3511 theres a lot of books about moomins, they were written by Tove Jansson! :) in order they go like this: 1. The Moomins and the Great Flood 2. Comet in Moominland 3. Finn Family Moomintroll (this is where the anime starts!) 4. Moominpappa's Memoirs 5. Moominsummer Madness (the one with the floating theatre) 6. Moominland Midwinter (moomin wakes up in the winter) 7. Tales from Moominvalley 8. Moominpappa at Sea 9. Moominvalley in November
I love all the happenstances that made this the scariest version of an already scary scene. Not only did the voice actor portray Groke in an almost hostile manner, but the animation itself is much darker in color due to problems with film importing, meaning most details of Groke are hidden most of the time.
It wasn't because of the film. It was the video section that was the problem. It seems like the black levels weren't adjusted properly. The Japanese version looks like this version with the gamma set higher.
Fun fact: The Groke in finnish version is named as "Mörkö" referring to word mörkt, which literally translates from sweden as dark. The name really suits her character.
Yeah The Groke was really scary to me as a kid but it's better to have such experiences at a young age instead of living in a fluffy balloon until your an adult and not knowing how to deal with such emotions.
Do you perhaps have the scene including from the part where she's behind the door, too? That shit traumatized the shit out of my swedish self but I'd love to have this entire scene in Finnish, because the groke is in fact creepiest here. And subtitled means i can share my trauma with international friends hahah
Yes, I have every single episode and I can also upload a clip of that part. This clip was originally supposed to be longer but it kept getting blocked for copyright so I had to shorten it down. But I can upload that part as a separate video no problem.
This episode reminds me a bit of The Thing (1982), the two beat music in the background, the frozen landscape and the mysterious frightening nature of the Groke.
Hey, this was really popular series in Poland when I was a kid and my dear brothers and sisters from Finland, let me just say - we understand! We are traumatized too...
She was creepy in Norwegian (at least for me when i was a KID) and gave me nightmares but this finish version is scary as all hell. Norwegian and English got nothing on this
Instead of "Minä palaan! Minä palaan!" I hear it: "Minä tapan! MINÄ TAPAN!". Roughly translated as "I WILL KILL YOU ALL!". I think it would fit the mood better.
True story:the groke was on a Finnish border line across the Soviet Russian troops attacking Finland and the Russian troops went into fear and full on retreat since they were scared and never returning to the Finnish land ever again.
I was still attending kindergarten when i saw a video of the groke actually getting shot. Thank god it isnt on youtube anymore. That could've been a disaster.
I watched this after reading a comment like “In the Finnish version, moominpapa is more clear about his willingness to shoot, not counting 9 and a half.” Or something like that. Guess I need to find the Japanese scene too now.
Japanese language in general is very dramatic so it wouldnt surprise me. I watched a video in WW2 scenario, and all i remember was word phrases such as "Te Wo Agero" (very dramatic) which means "Hands up". Japan makes cool stuff happen though!
Finnish dub: Terrifying growl Original Japanese version: SINCE WHEN THE ACTUAL F*** DID THE GROKE TOOK DEATH RATTLE LESSONS FROM KAYAKO FROM JU-ON: THE F***ING GRUDGE
You must go! Leave before I count to ten. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine... Are you all right? Look at the ground! All frozen. I'll be back! I'll be back! The Groke's voice... It got cold! Yes, it did. The Groke won't return tonight.
You seem to be right. No-one! We scared it away! Ha, ha, ha! The Groke beat a retreat! There it is! Waahh! Groke... Uhm, we would be happy if you went home. You're upsetting our guests. You're freezing the roses! Let mother's flowers be!
When i was little, everytime i was at my grandma i always wanted watch some groke episode and that line ”Minä palaan” our dad liked to use it to us cause were scared off it🤣
I mean if a big disguised person appeared behind your door in middle of the night after destroying your garden, I doubt you would be invite them for a tea.
AKA: How to traumatize an entire generation of Finnish children.
I wasn't really afraid of Groke, the Ice Lady on the other hand still freaks me out.
I'd say it wasn't just Finnish; Estonian children were also quite scared of her.

Anime which is made from the books gives the same vibes. Also that groke has a crush on moomin
She is an analogy for loneliness.
Yeah same here, I remember being creeped out by her when I was really little, but now knowing that I feel sorry for her.
Hi, may I ask which books have you read? Thank you :)

The Finnish voice of the Groke is really spooky.
@O Mies LMAO
Yep i have heard that and i got nighmares about it. PS im from finland
@O Mies Us too who were born in the 80's and watched it on tv as small kids.
@O Mies What are you referring to?
@O Mies Ei mtn, itekki silmät kierossa varmistelin että mitä ihmettä sanoin :D

Honestly I find Polish sounds scarier, and Polish dub in the darker color exists, so I would say Polish version is scarier.
It wasn't because of the film. It was the video section that was the problem. It seems like the black levels weren't adjusted properly. The Japanese version looks like this version with the gamma set higher.

Yeah but 'mörkö' is also a synonym for ghost, just not as serious
Mörkö suits her much better than Morran, which she is called in the Swedish and Japanese version. Morran is a name you would give to a cute plush toy!
Mörkö also translates to Boogieman
Mörkö = Boogieman :) But interesting fact!
Her??? IT'S A SHE????
Finnish Groke is scary as hell. I think scariest from all. 1:24 i love his laughter. Its me when im right
Fun fact: the groke is female
Yeah The Groke was really scary to me as a kid but it's better to have such experiences at a young age instead of living in a fluffy balloon until your an adult and not knowing how to deal with such emotions.
You are very correct.
Better to have nightmares for 5 years straight every single night and have an insane fear of the dark for the rest of your life? Yeah, why not!
Scariest character ever. Nightmares were a lot worse than series.

I love how finnish can either sound cute or badass depending whos speaking
If it's moominpappa it sounds always badass😂
@@Leon.16 Moominpappa sounds more like a distinguished gentleman most of the time, but he can be very badass too of course. It's not his first rodeo

I am 33 and this scene still gives me chills. Fucking trauma for life.
Same! 30 here...so fucking ice cold chills.

TRAUMAT
Jep :(
KYLLÄ
The groke is just a reflection of our loneliness and fear.
This episode reminds me a bit of The Thing (1982), the two beat music in the background, the frozen landscape and the mysterious frightening nature of the Groke.
That was my first thought.
i love the groke shes such a baby

My kids call each other 'Groke' after I made them watch every episode with me
Hyhmää! Kiva sana.
This thing haunted me for years

"siellä se on!"

how my mum traumatised me as a young child
These sound effects honestly sound more funny than scary to me. I wonder if they had echo effect, would they sound scarier?
8, 9... kymmen (bang) Muumipeikko: Isä mitä vittua? Mörkö: mitää helevettiä?
Helvetin Mörkö, saan siitä painajaisia!
Hey, this was really popular series in Poland when I was a kid and my dear brothers and sisters from Finland, let me just say - we understand! We are traumatized too...
Groke everyone nightmare as Finn 😊
Now i do like it.
Groke is a woman.
For others to know, not to mistake her as a man. :)
Since many did as i did.
Grokes voice does sound like a man🤔, I guess shes taken some testosterone..
when I was a kid, this scene gave me nightmares for years, scared the shit out of me omg.
Others, who were very afraid of the Groke as children but now Groke is your favorite character or even comfort character?
I'M 36 YEARS OLD AND STILL LOVE THE MOOMINS😢 I LOVE THE GROKE😢

I remember Mr. Nightmare talking about this in one of his old uploads. Honestly, my first introduction to Moomin lol.
True story:the groke was on a Finnish border line across the Soviet Russian troops attacking Finland and the Russian troops went into fear and full on retreat since they were scared and never returning to the Finnish land ever again.
Then Groke went to Russia and scared Stalin
I was still attending kindergarten when i saw a video of the groke actually getting shot. Thank god it isnt on youtube anymore. That could've been a disaster.
I was so scared when I saw it as a kid I remember it how scared I was until now
In the Japanese version Moominpappa is more clear about his intentions of shooting the Groke, but this is just him politely suggesting her to leave.
I watched this after reading a comment like “In the Finnish version, moominpapa is more clear about his willingness to shoot, not counting 9 and a half.”

Never watched the entire series so i wasnt scared of the groke.
I thought Moomin Valley was a gun free zone
Moominvalley has its own 2nd amendment 💀
Groke is a cutie, She only wanted Friends :3
Finnish dub: Terrifying growl
Original Japanese version: SINCE WHEN THE ACTUAL F*** DID THE GROKE TOOK DEATH RATTLE LESSONS FROM KAYAKO FROM JU-ON: THE F***ING GRUDGE
I remember one episode little My made a sand version of the Groke and then the Groke actually appeared
ah i remember that too they had some kind of sand castle competition
The Groke scared the shit out of 6 yo me
Childhood trauma unleashed again 🤦♂️

Does anyone happen to know / have the music? I find this theme to be particularly more creepy than the Groke’s actual theme
I guess this is the Finnish version of King Ramses lol
I had nightmare of those
I think I liked Moominmama's English actress more than the Finnish one. She does sound sweet, though.
Polish too. She was so mild and sweet
When i was little, everytime i was at my grandma i always wanted watch some groke episode and that line ”Minä palaan” our dad liked to use it to us cause were scared off it🤣
This happened because of the improperly set up black levels. In the Japanese version Groke is not that black.
God momin papa
This episode was so unnecessarily scary for children that it should have been banned for children under 12 years of age in the first place
I'm the one to leave the 666th like for this video. Seems awfully fitting for this.
Nice
She angry
Moomin father: PERKELE!😂
Ё-ошкин кот, и как теперь спать?!

Finnish isn't as bad as Japanese, Japanese is just creepy
Japanese: literally Ju-on stuff right there....
كنت اخاف منها الباردة ايام الطفولة
aaaaaaaaaaaaahhh
Suomi mainittu nähdään torilla
So the white Moomins don't like the black characters? lol Groke is awesome.
Groke is actually purple
Sounds like bait. But darkness is universally scary often for most people, so something in between like daylight is the best place to be.
I mean if a big disguised person appeared behind your door in middle of the night after destroying your garden, I doubt you would be invite them for a tea.
Ei muumitaloa lukita yöksi, hei muumit~
if it didn't make that stupid grunting noise this woulda been really scary
The Groke is not scary, she is funny
