WOW, I USED TO WORK FOR HELI-LA WHEN BASED OUT OF S.M. AIRPORT. I LIVED ON VENICE BEACH AT THE TIME. BRINGS BACK FUN, GREAT MEMORIES. THANK YOU MUCH FOR VIDEO.
Well, it's been a while since someone commented, but I'll tell you this is some great video for people that like looking a biz jets land and takeoff. Even though it was 8 years ago, this is a great watch!!
Thanks for stopping by and dusting the cobwebs off this video! Biz jets still have lots of variety of types compared to airlines. Now that SMO has shortened their runway, they don’t get near the jet activity as in this video.
20yrs ago I worked for a company that own a Cessna Citation 2, I flew in it many times to San Diego, there is nothing better than flying in a private jet.
Wow, well done. One of the greatest plane spottings of private jets and small aircrafts. It is also nice to see some turboprops in between as well. Everything is just perfect. Thank you :)
True… I love plane spotting. I also like train and helicopter spotting sometimes but plane spotting is really cool too. I always prefer it without music, just engine sound. You?
S.L.S Hahaha glad I was able to lead you astray into some aviation for a while. Feel free to waste more time. There’s tons of spotting videos on RUclips waiting to be watched 🙂
+Bryan Neville Glad you liked the vid. The business jet world is indeed very fascinating. My home state is Ohio but currently live in Los Angeles. Does Lunken have good spotting areas?
Hey you! Fancy meeting you here! This must have been a great day for you seeing all these (rich people's) cool planes! How fun. Last time I 'saw' you, you were in my old hometown, Vegas, shooting some great footage!! You got some nice shots of Santa Monica, too. I love that place. Man that jet at 11:33 was cool! Are some of those Lear jets?? Thanks for the upload, this was another great video! Thanks so much and you take good care. I'll check out Part 2 tomorrow~ ;)
Hey! Thanks for stopping by and watching. Ahh yes, I shot that Vegas video a little over a year ago I believe. Santa Monica is scenic just like LAS airport with all of the surrounding mountains. Many of the aircraft flying that day were Lear Jet's. 14:34, and 19:13 are both Lear Jets, so that will give you an idea of the style.
LoveJT8D Yea, , those mountains are a real pretty backdrop. And I thought some of those were Lear jets. Amazing machines! Thanks again for the great shots.~ ;)
I'm a Citation guy but those Gulfstream's are starting grow on me, especially the landing, when you drop the flaps and make that nice big pocket to land on. 😎👍
Solomon Pilot Hopefully will be open a while longer, but it seems only a matter of time. Definitely One of the best places in Southern California to go plane spotting.
There is really something about a Gulfstream. Maybe it's the raked, nose down, tail high look of the tall main gear? Maybe the huge intakes of the Rolls Royce engines? The winglets? I don't know, but man, they are beautiful aircraft. I had to opportunity to work for Gulfstream many years back, and the good fortune to be able to fly in a few. Nothing in the world like it!
That's so awesome that you got to work for such an amazing aircraft manufacturer. If this video was nothing but Gulfstreams, I'd be quite fine with that. My favorite are the old GIIs / IIIs. The smoke and sound of the SPEYs is quite a show. Almost scored a ride on one but didn't quite work out.
Dont know if I've asked this before but lets say on one of those Corporate jets, I have always enjoyed listening to the control tower, from one of the passenger seats are you able to plug in a pair of headsets and choose a station where I could actually listen to the Control tower just like the pilot and Co-pilot can?????
"please fly quietly" like really? do they really need to put that crap? I'm sure the airport was there before the houses. If ppl dont like the sound of airplanes, then maybe, (just thinking logically here) dont Flipping live near a damn airport!
I find the "please fly quietly" signs quite humorous. Sadly, older louder business jets such as the GII, GIII, Lear 23/24 and others are banned from flying into SMO.
It is Californication, a state run by Socialist that are running business out. That airport has been since before WW 2. You Californicators should be able to find that out on the internet.
Not an odd question at all. The camera was a Sony HX-100V using the 60i setting which is still (30 FPS). I used a Velbon Videomate 607 tripod with a video fluid head. Thanks for watching!
About a month ago (possible 7/15/16) at around 4:00 pm (rush hour) near Wilshire in Santa Monica I saw what I can only describe as a rocket type plane, kind of like when we glued fins onto the back of those cartridges used to propel hand made rockets as a kid? It was flying VERY fast and VERY low, didn't make a sound and was traveling from beach side of 405 to the LA side of the 405. I haven't been able to search and find anything that resembles it and during my research it becomes more and more strange? Just imagine a missile with wings on the back (or bottom) facing up on a 45 degree angle under intelligent control making turns etc...
would really like to see someday a turboprop aircraft with eqach one of its engine blades a different Color, then see what they would like like when they are get up to speed wjhen they start the engines, or just do something to the blades that would really make them stand out once they start spinning
Hi Greg, thanks for checking out my vid. I believe there is an FBO called Atlantic Aviation. There may be others but not sure of specific company names.
I believe the Cessnas (150, 172, 182 etc...) use wheel brakes while turbo-props like the King Air have the ability to feather the angle of the prop blades to add a "reverse thrust."
Thank you! I used the Sony HX-100V for this video. There have been new models that have taken this camera's place over the past 4-5 years (200V, 300V etc...) The camera performs on par for it's class however you cannot change and upgrade your lenses such as the DSLRs.
According to the registration, this Citation X was manufactured in 2000. I am guessing the winglets were a custom design requested by the customer. Not sure if Citation X's today come standard with winglets.

7:50, the only thing about takig your dog on a plane, is that a plane is not like a car, you just cant open the window and let the dog stick his head out of it, I dont know if this can or ever has been done before, but just cant imagine seeing a plane flying through the air with a dog hanging his/her head out of the window...LOL...I could spend all day long just watching planes takeoff and land and this airport...you had a fantastic viewing perch wherever you were, I hope you make more of these even if it is just from this airport........
This is Santa Monica airport and I believe the viewing area behind the general aviation building. A lot of the bigger Gulfstreams I don’t think they get anymore after shortening the runway.
I haven't heard any further reports on the cause. The hangar may still be there as this video was taken about 2 months ago. I would suspect demolition and removal would start soon though.
That black/white Gulfstream is owned by some young dude and his investment company. The N number on that black/white at 18:00 is owned by a Beverly Hills real estate agent named Robert Radcliffe. But it says its a Embraer 500 which that is not. Maybe Rob upgraded?
Oh my god, what a beautiful variety of bizz jets! We here in Kiel/ Germany wouldn't have this number of movements within 1 year! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks haha! I love catching little details like the cone kick.
You just don't get that from other aviation channels. lol

+LoveJT8D it had a damn from me haha
mspairport man Nice. Quite the show with that cone flip.
This footage was taken December 1, 2013. The holiday rush after Thanksgiving yielded a nice variety of aircraft into SMO

Hazazi zie Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Wow! Quite a day. Thanks for posting and sharing.
Thanks for watching. I spent 8 hours at the airport that day so there will be a second part coming soon.
Nice job! I just watched the full video, this footage makes me want to go out there again.
I agree. This has to be the prime airport viewing location in SoCal.
WOW that livery 13:40. That is so cool. Great video!
That Cessna definitely had some character. There was another one that was all red. Thanks for watching!
Yeah, that is an awesome livery. Never seen a livery like that on a Cessna. You were lucky.
Dude go back to flight sim
We have a Pumpkin plane in Santa Monica and again, welcome to Steam Edition.
Very nice! Great quality! I work at Cincinnati Lunken so I definitely find all this hardware to be very familiar and interesting. great work!
+Bryan Neville Glad you liked the vid. The business jet world is indeed very fascinating. My home state is Ohio but currently live in Los Angeles. Does Lunken have good spotting areas?
I live about 15 mins from there in NKY.
man I love them Gulfstreams...those are some sexy ass planes
Just exactly where is the ass on a Gulf Stream airplane? Sure can tell by your comment where your nose is.
That cone kick was really hilarious 😂
Aviation&Gameplay 101 Definitely a lucky catch :)
Love seeing Nakatomi tower from Die Hard in the background
James Bartran Ahh yes! I’ve lived in LA for about 12 years and never knew the name of that building until now.
Awesome video! nothing beats the sound of prop power at full song :)
Thank you for watching! The props definitely pack an awesome sound :)
Great video! Thanks for

0:15 That ridiculous "PLEASE FLY QUIETLY" sign! Hahahaha! That's about the same as telling a fire alarm in a library to be quiet.
November Triple seven tango charlie. What a great tail number...awesome vid!
Andrew Hooker Thanks! One of the other commenters mentioned that was previously Tom Cruise's plane.
LoveJT8D That might explain why I couldn't track it on flight aware...
Amazing shots and what a view.
Thank you! SMO does have an amazing view to all of the mountains that surround LA county.

Very nice would love to see footage from here more often.
Thanks for watching! I will post the second part to this video soon which covers the latter half of the day.
At the end, a nice shot of Tom Cruse's G-IV. (N777TC) which has now been sold. I am sure he has has upgraded to a G-550 or 650 by now.
Sean Donnelly Thanks! At the time I filmed this, had no idea that was Tom Cruise's plane.
Used to see him and Harrison Ford often but sadly with these anti jet plans for Santa Monica airport, these sighting will become a thing of the past.
Awesome gulfstream climbout liked.
Ivan Bully Thanks! Glad you liked the Gulfstream. Those are my favorite to watch at GA airports.
You can see at 8:22 the hangar in the background that was struck by the twin engine Cessna which exploded thereafter.

Nice shot of Tom Cruise's old G-iV (N777TC) Since sold as he upgraded to a G550. He used this airport a lot.
Sean Donnelly Thanks! Definitely a sharp looking plane.
Isn't this the area where jay Leno has a warehouse with a lot of his cars?? Just saying this airport has a lot of cash in and out of it.

So many Leers arrived
Yeah, there's quite a few of them that fly into our SoCal airports.

Meant to ask this a long time ago, but what happened to that one buildinat looked like it was halfway collasped??????
A twin engine Cessna crashed into it, then exploded.

Sounds like you saw a really interesting plane. I love the smaller GA airports around SoCal for the variety of aircraft stored at them.
Yes, I'm sure it was a plane but it did look like a missile with wings on the back.
I would love to go there one time, Liked!
You should definitely come to SMO for s visit. It is a wonderful public viewing area.

Curious, Do the Prop engined planes use their wheel brakes to stop or are the props themselves feathered to a "reverse thrust" setting?
I believe the Cessnas (150, 172, 182 etc...) use wheel brakes while turbo-props like the King Air have the ability to feather the angle of the prop blades to add a "reverse thrust."
