How a Lapras Beat Gen 5’s #1 Player.
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 21 мар 2024
- Pokemon Competitive Singles in Generation 5 is one of the most infamous formats in the games history. Defined by Permanent weather effects like Drizzle and Sand Stream, and extremely powerful Central Pokemon like Latios, Keldeo and Thundurus-Therian, the wild matchup swings and high power level turns many away.
However, this format firmly stands out from every single other OU in the franchise with interesting weather abusers, particularly on Rain teams, occasionally finding themselves used at high level play.
Lapras is not a Pokemon many would consider fantastic competitively, but it just made history in this infamously tough metagame. Thanks to its ability Hydration, a Lapras, piloted by the skilled player Rewer, pulled off a monumental sweep against perhaps Gen 5's strongest player, Soulwind.

Some will never figure out how to get Cloyster in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Cloyster Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Cloyster Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
Arceus exists.
The below text is very relevant to many people.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on RUclips. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

Keldeo uses SECRET SWORD not Sacred Sword you absolute Buffoons.
SECRET SWORD does not ignore Defensive boosts. Comment about it once more I dare you.
Seems like a pretty well-kept secret...
Lapras is one of those Pokémon that no one dislikes, right? Are there people who actually hate Lapras?
I hope not.
Lapras is cool.
Hating Lapras should be illegal
Elite redux players facing Mega Lapras X
I think some people dislike gmax laparas, that that has to do with a balancing issue more then anything
Did James Cool not realize Rewer was running mono Water?
You're right about that.
Nothing gets past this guy
I did and I couldn’t believe it
This only gets more insane when you consider that every single mon on Soulwind’s team save perhaps for Politoed had a means to hit Lapras super effectively. I can only conclude that he took the mon too lightly, he probably should have gone into Keldoe immediately rather than staying in with Ferrothorn
Or immediately go for power whips
true. He definitely underestimated lapras. I understand though, very unexpected
Nah, after he lost thundurus lapras pretty much cooked his team, sooner or later he was provably getting massively damaged by it
Just because it gets hit super effectively it doesnt mean it wins 1v1
Props to Rewer for getting every prediction of when to use Rest correct.
When you begin playing anything with Rest yourself, or have played against it a lot, you become more adept at it.
Also worth mentioning that this match was during the final week of SPL before the playoffs. Rewer's team had no chance of making playoffs so he probably just decided to fuck around and have fun for his final match, bringing mono-water.
I always thought rain in gen5 was absolutely overpowered and this replay does reinforce this feeling xD
Rain is very good but I think most players view Sand as the best weather
I main Gen 5 and I also think well built Sand teams are the most consistent to pilot and they handle Rain very very well
@@jimothycoolwhat does sand have besides the hippo and ttar? I thought exadrill was banned
@@eeveewithcoffee9554 Sand doesn't benefit that much from direct synergy but Chipping enemy rain Pokemon is really valuable.
Pokemon like Alakazam, Reuniclus, and Gliscor are very strong on Sand teams
@@jimothycool oh so it’s just used as passive damage like spikes or rocks. For like stall teams or hyper offensive teams
Lapras was actually a recommended offbeat Pokemon as an option for gen 5 rain teams on smogon way back when. It wasn’t ranked in OU and had no strategy guide for it, but I remember the smogon guide to weather teams mentioning DD and Hydration. It’s the main reason why I bred one in that gen
It's Lapras' Latest Likable Lambasting of Lower Lifeforms, everyone
OMG it’s god, hello god
Nah, I don't think any metagame is ever going to be solved. Just look at Generation I OU, it's STILL finding developments to this day.
As a general rule, in a game with incomplete information and a large selection of option, it is almost impossible to solve unless this is something really specific (like Stadium Rental metagame or 10U).
@@MyHandleIsAplaceholder there still is some variation between teams. The exact sets aren't always the same.
Even when solved, mons will rotate through the meta
The evolution of gen 1 is "you know those 15 viable pokes, yeah now it's 14, (bye golem) now it's 13 (bye victreebel) now it's 12 (bye Jolteon)"
At this rate we'll start looking at teams by the mon's the don't include rather than the ones they do.
@ussgordoncaptain gen 1 ou's uncut viability rankings have over 80 Pokémon. A mon not qualifying for OU doesn't make it bad, it just means it's less consistent than those that do. Don't make assumptions about a tier you don't play.
I love that Rewer had Lanturn on his team, as it's my favorite Pokemon, yet I'm well aware how outclassed it is in the powercrept OUs of Gen 5 onwards (especially with Rotom-W around). And while it might not have had any field time in the battle, it did seem like its presence mind-gamed Soulwind into going for Nasty Plot on Thundurus, which allowed Rewer to go for the 2HKO with the Sash Empoleon, so I'd say Lanturn contributed to that win.
"Lanturn Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing"
Nice video! I'm happy this fun team won the way it did, though it is worth noting though that it's a very old team and I didn't actually build this myself, and that I had nothing to lose in this game because my team was already out, hence why I'm using it.
Thanks for the extra context. The insane bring makes more sense considering that. Congrats on the win anyway 😄
I hope Lapras obtains the hidden technique "snatch" for it's future endeavors as a sleeper pick in future generations
Plz cover more gen 5. You've taught me all I know about gen 3, but there's only so much left that can easily be covered, especially after the iceberg
Lapras gaming?!?!?
7:03
Wow, Lapras just ate up that thunder no sweat. That is a _very_ specially bulky set... which makes sense, to be fair
Bro srsly beat one of the greatest players with a god damn water monotype team
Ahh Lapras. With 130 HP and hydration it can take hits and rest with impunity. Once you stack a few curses on top of that it’s pretty much GG
I literally quit competitive because of Stealth Rock and spikes to a lesser extent. Seeing someone lose because they were so hyper focused on getting them out at any cost made me happy.
bro hates spinning and suit tar
Lapras is an iconic and beloved Pokémon.
I don’t think anyone would’ve been able to handle what that Lanturn was capable of.
not only using lapras but using mono water is funny as hell
Lapras is an iconic and a beloved Pokemon.
A favorite of many
A favorite of many that is commonly used in main game playthroughs
But on a competitive side of things, Lapras is not particularly fantastic
The peak of it's power and relevance was in generation 1
where it is actually quite good as a bulky water type support
Ty for posting Jim! I really appreciate all your uploads, I watch them before work or on my lunch break if I can :)
I've been binging your ADV revival content, so a new video about Gen V caught me off guard. A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
not the mono water team 😭
Your background track choices are awesome
Folks, it would seem that this is of dubious sanity.
Lapras is rather neat, and I am interested in its future
Amazing outro Jim
Every pokemon enjoyer can agree on one thing.
Lapras is adorable.
I’d like to see some more Gen 5 OU content :) I pretty much only play 3 and 4 so it’d be fun to see more of 5 and perhaps even play it myself
I loved using this Lapras set back in gen V. I didn’t make nearly as good of use of it, but it was a powerful win condition.
I do wonder why soulwind didn't just pick power whip immediately against lapras. None of the remaining mon were particularly threatening to standard ferrothorn, so the stealth rocks weren't doing much. Even assuming he didn't know what lapras would do, I find it hard not to click power whip there... but I'm not the best player in gen 5 ou so my opinion is of very little matter.
Curse and Rest probably would've 1v1'd a Power Whipping Ferrothorn. I think he had to go immediately to Starmie and click Thunder. Probably also should've saved health on Politoed so it could Encore without getting sniped by Ice Shard
I guess he saw Lapras as not threatening at first. He likely saw it as a Water Absorber, hence why he decided to set rocks on it before going to attack. He didn't see Curse coming. Why he didn't Power Whip during the spikes turn though, thats on him for blundering
@@jimothycool I think based on my calcs, it definitely would have 1v1d the ferrothorn (It looks like the lapras was max hp no defense based on the power whip damage), but at the very least it would give the info on lapras' set, as he would see the curse, the lapras would be forced to rest, and then he could switch to the starmie or politoed depending on how he best sees fit to handle the situation.
lapras pulling a sweep off is the most satisficing thing i seen in gen 5
Most the hydration Lapras I used to see playing Gen 5 OU where Dragon Dance + Rest sets. I think Gen 5 OU is the best OU simply because of the amount of Pokemon that can work in OU. I have seen Parasect, Charizard, Jolteon work.
Seeing Lapras free heal was so lit with a curse set. Nice
I like this content from you a lot, I think it plays to your strengths.
It's like halfway between your informational videos and your gameplay videos, so you end up explaining how something can work in theory and then show how it works in practice.
It also has the benefit of having a bit of a "news" factor. And best part is that it can work for any gen!
1:10 Great music choice, I'm actually playing through that game again right now
Thats why i love perma weather so much it can allow some creativity
Oh shit. It’s a soul wind video. My favorite person to run into in let’s go!!! Miss him
Lapras is having such a glow up. No longer endangered AND tearing it up in bw OU? Keep on slaying queen
Ooh, this was lovely. Love it when fun silly stuff gets a win.
Donuts and apple juice, I need to clean stuck egg off the oven before I make more egg
I wish I had a subscription to The Daily Gamer. Today’s headlining story was groundbreaking
Great vid cheers &ty
Gen 5 OU is my favourite generation of all time. Experimenting in this tier is so unbelievably fun. Credits to Rewer for bringing that heat
0:11 You say here that Lapras' peak of power and relevance was gen 1, but it was used a fair amount in Gen 8 VGC as Gigantamax Lapras for it's move G-Max Resonance being able to set up Aurora Veil without hail.
Enjoyable video for the rest!
Unpopular opinion: I think chlorophyll+drought was fair, it was the only way to sun compete fairly against rain and sand (drizzle and swift swim were already banned and excadrill was uber).
(great content as always btw)
Are you stupid?

i LOVE to see when gimicy sets or teams do well :)
His team is amazing. Empoleon and Politoed are some of my fav mons, with Lapras and Lanturn coming close... amazing team.
BoltBeam was an important offensive combination back then (perhaps as few offensive combinations existed until ORaS which really revolutionized competitive play in all formats) and guess what, Lapras got it! Was surprised to see physical Lapras instead.
Rewer’s Water monotype is pretty dope ngl
getting reminded of the Bo1 format a bunch of smogon tournies run and dying a little inside
This is brilliant
Between this and the Articuno that won a Gen 9 Tournament, people are really looking at Ice-Types and deciding to make them work.
The guy brought a whole fucking mono water team
This is so cool
Hell yeah! Gimme more gen 5 too 😊
It looks like rewer just wanted to force the ferro out, given it appears curse Lapras beats power whip ferro 1v1 and it’s not like he had any other options on his team to deal with it. But soulwind just didn’t know and started vomiting hazards, and now suddenly Lapras is the win condition.
Losing thundurus to a failed prediction is whatever, it happens, but leaving Ferro in was definitely where it all just fell apart.
He Did it Again! Lapras in the Thumbnail doesn’t have a Horn, just like the last video’s Samurott!
Can't wait for bkc video on this
This is insane
Ice type has actually gotten better over the years...
Brings mono water to SPL, wins.
I like Lapras in gen 3 as a Suicune counter. 4x resist on ice and immunity to water means you can always tank it even at max boosts and get off a roar or perish song.
Lapras was my first tcg deck in sun and moon and Sword And shield. In the vgc I saw dragon dance ice shard topped
Generation 5 OU is a competitive metagame infamous for its significant power creep and volatility.
Don't let that insane lapras gameplay distract you from the fact that Old Money is on the move again.
Lapras my beloved
We are Lapras Gaming ™️ folks.
I once played soulwind in a LGPE tournament. I took a game off of him and was 1 Pokémon away from beating him in game 3. Fun times.
Lapras was quite good in the SwSh meta with Max Renaissance and was great with that extra health pool. If the hail buff got here earlier i think Lapras would have been even better😄
Moral of the story: run Leech Seed on Ferrothorn
I feel like the competitive scene can only be "solved" in the early gens where you have less options. Probably with gen 4 and onwards, all it will take is finding that one niche Pokémon or a specific type of team (like psychic spam) to break and reshape the meta. Then sometime in the future something new will pop up that counters the new, old, meta. Then the cycle continues
intersting movesets for #1 player
what a buckwild replay. truly unruly
I would love to see a video about clefables rise in DPP OU
I hope you had a special birthday on Sunday sir
Lapras was an iconic and loved pokemon
I use one on my hail team in gen 9 nat dex. It ate a booster energy cc from tusk. I was so impressed
I really love people playing Gen 5 OU
Gen 5 gets a lot of hate because of the weather wars, but I still had a ton of fun with the meta because there were so many weird off-meta pokemon you could run because of the absurdety of perma weather.
These days, if you run weather, you're kind of pigeon-holed into running hyper offense, because your weather is on a timer, but you used to could sit around in this gen and use the more passive playstyles.
I remember I used to have a fun Sun Stall team back in the day that I had a lot of success with, but definitely wouldn't work with the new weather changes.
First Articuno, now Lapras. Does this mean Dewgon will pop up sometime this year?
Lapras' Legendary Victory Lap
Fandom: Gym leaders are absurd, why do they focus on training pokemon of just one type?
Rewer winning against the best pokemon player of all time with six water types:
I liked this video and subscribed to the channel to prevent the past paradox form of Goldengo, Old Money, from artificially inflating the value of his most prized asset, Gimmeghoul coins, thus leaving all the unsuspecting Jimothy Cool nonsubscribers in financial ruin.
thats why leech seed is so good on ferrothorn
Essentially "lost" turn one, but could have brought it back if he saved health on poli
Wow that was such a fumble ngl
I’m guessing water absorb and learning tbolt/thunder helps
I was wrong lol
Wait where do we upload our pokemon resumes? Falinkedin?
i do feel like gen 5 ou at times is similar to gen 1 ou, a (sort of) centralized metagame that at times running weird, suboptimal niche pokemon can catch your opponent off guard
Rare Lapras W
Wait does sacred sword not ignore stat changes to defense? I thought it ignored defense and evasion boosts.
Was going to comment same.. could 2HKO?
But Keldeo uses Secret Sword and is like Psyshock but Fight
Hey, Jimothy! How r u? I play gen 4 OU on smogon, however, i cant get higher than 1.500 rank. Id like to know if u know someone who could help me with some team building hints. Thanks
A Lapras Beat Gen 5's #1 Player before Gholdengo and Kingambit got banned from Gen 9 OU. This is Insane Folks.
I think more gen5 ou content would be great for the channel. I enjoyed this meta game years ago and upon returning it seems my whole old team has been banned… would love to hear some analysis on what is currently strong
Laprassssssss gaminggggggg
Oh god, oh no. Gimmighoul coins have been rising massively in value recently. What is Old Money planning with this??
