- Correction - Beech, not birch. 12 gauge reloading trays are not widely distributed. Finding ones made of good hardwood is even more difficult. But here's a formula for making them ourselves even without woodworking skills...and in an inexpensive fashion...BTW - This tray will handle all gauges from 20 gauge to 10 gauge with aplomb....err, a plum...

Hi there from germany. Thank you for your Inspiration of making those 12 Gauge loading trays. As they are hard to get in Germany, if in case you get one your hobby budget gets molten down like hot lead, i decided to make my own. I went to the local hardware store and purchesed two glued oak-bords 20 x 80 cm at about 11 dollar a piece. after cutting them in format with my handheld circlesaw i drilled the holes with a 24mm forestry drill. I then rounded the edges with a router, screwed the two pieces together, then short sanding with fine paper and finished off with waxing. What a pity that i can not show pictures here.
Thanks for all your loading, casting and powder coating videos. Im not far from you in California and its really help keep me shooting lately!
ej22twagon - During these historic difficult times, we reloaders who have supplies of components are able to ride through all the turbulence with flair d'vite...whatever that means..!! Best to ya, Steve
Nothing like the pride of ownership on something made from our own hands. Great job Cookie!
Safety First!
Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.
I personally have learned many things.
Please don't stop lol.
Thanks for taking the time to post comment JL..!! Best to you, Steve
Brilliant! Use cutting boards for loading blocks. 😃 Thank you for posting this on YT!
LH - There's a world of beautiful inexpensive cutting boards for us to choose from...it's really fantastic... Best to ya, Steve
Nice video 👍
I made a 100 round block for 9mm yesterday. It worked out nice.
831sabino - Yes, that's the beauty - we can do those 100 round trays. Congrats on your project... Steve
Nice work Steve.
CD - Thanks for taking the time to comment, Steve
Excellent! Your use of hardwood cutting boards is brilliant. Many thanks for the information and instructional video.
ARR - Thanks, and I did enjoy your thread with the Desert Wolf - thanks for your service also....Best to ya, Steve
I'm happy to say that I haven't seen mask one, or any kind of socialist distancing at my range since this madness started.
Nice work on the trays. They'll look really nice after a few coats of finish.
I never knew how useful Forstner bits were until I got some to make reloading trays. The right speed makes a huge difference in the quality of the cut.
Being a simple man, I would have said the rounded edges were grip enough, and set my depth stop to leave about 1/8" in the bottom of the board and called it good.
I like to set out alternating rows of hulls and wads. That way after adding the powder and inserting the wad, I get an easy visual cue of where I left off.
PK - Yes, there are many ways to make reloading trays - beauty is that we make 'em according to our way of reloading - all good. Thanks for commenting, PL good to hear from you...Steve
no brother its the aristocrats totalitair ,that uses right and left to get the power.
A FortuneCookie45LC video in the subscription feed, always great news.
In times like these, they are appreciated. Sometimes they do reveal how badly I'm spoiled. In farmland USA, fly over states, or the basket of deplorables, which ever you prefer, I just have to go to one of the fields I have access to. No wait, no crowd, and no noise except for mine.
I'm hoping that FC45 and all those in line for his gun range will try to get more conservative politicians in power. Then they wouldn't be dealing with stupid rules that have been proven time and again to not work.
glitches - That is a very sweet thing indeed - just go out and shoot - reminds me of my father telling me that in Suisun, California, back in the 1950s, the farm owners used to go out on the back porch and shoot WWII liberated 8mm Mausers to blow up loquats out of the trees - no danger of hitting people 1-2 miles outrange because there wasn't anybody out there. Now, doing the same would violate many laws. Have a great day, Steve
Nice build, five hour wait? That’s incredible. No waiting or 😷 out in the desert. 🏜
Out in the woods of East Texas, all I have to do is step out the door and walk 30' to my 100m bench. I suppose I'm really spoiled huh?😊
An Angry Ranger very cool, now if only the prices would go back to the way they were, probably not though.
@@desertwolf3818 Oh brother, yesterday, I paid $48 for one pound of BL-C (2) powder and that was more disturbing than seeing one of my ex-wives! 😠
An Angry Ranger remember when it was $14,00 a pound.
@@desertwolf3818 Ha! Oh yeah. Shucks I even remember when it was half that! Primers just under a penny a piece... Gone are the days eh?😏
Excellent work Steve! A beautiful shotgun as well.
When are you going to start selling the Svarog slug jig for ailing and drilling the screw hole for the slug to wad?
Nick - You actually inspired me to make my own rather crude loading tray - works very well for my use. Have a great day, Steve
Well done. And your shop clean up skills are second to none!
Greetings from Poland!
Michnal Abramowicz - And hello to you, Poland..!! - Steve
It’s always a pleasure to view one of your videos, keep it up my friend 😊
Your comments are much appreciated - Have a great day JvH, Steve
A two hour wait?! I am definitely spoiled. My gun club has several ranges. If I don't get one to myself I usually go home and shoot in my backyard.
JO - That's a very fine situation you have there, Jake - Good shootin' to ya, dude..!! Steve
Great idea Steve! I too much prefer to use a solid hardwood reloading block! I made one using solid oak flooring left over from a home construction project years ago. I thought I'd shot some video but I guess I never finished editing this for my RUclips channel, so I'll have to revisit this again. The five hour wait at the shooting range, might be reason # 2 for leaving California! # One is the taxes are too darn high! Even Weatherby has left for Wyoming.
Ron Lanzo - I remember meeting Roy Weatherby who was doing a promo at a Bay Area shooting store back in the 70s. He was very easy to talk to - a gentleman of the shooting sports - but his fine guns were on the pricey side - I was just starting to work at the time, but already had my Series 70 1911 and Ruger Super Blackhawk - how does $125 and $87,50 sound for the times... Thanks for sharing your comments, Steve
Very nice job. You are always thinking.
Awesome Job!
Happy to know that you are fine Steve, Send you a hug from Argentina.-
Nichlas - And hello to you, Argentina..!! Best to ya from the Northern Hemisphere - Steve
Thanks Steve, really enjoyed that. That gave me ideas for other calibers :-))
Have a good weekend !
Nick J - Thanks, Nick..!! And good woodworkin' to ya, Steve
@@FortuneCookie45LC You need to com back to Washington so we can get together:-))
As usual .your show is informative and fun.
CB - By golly, yumpin' yiminy - you've condensed it all in one short sentence.... learning stuff we want to learn, and doing stuff we want to do is the lifelong enterprise - and that's what makes life fun. Best to ya, Steve
You can make a high capacity loading block in Kalifornistan ?😂
COMMIEFORNIA
Carlos - Never thought of ihat way, but - drat - you're right... Have a great day, Steve
Awsome trays!!! Makes me want to make some for other calibers. They dont look that hard to make either ;)
CM - Was easy, especially with those cutting boards already finished. There are many other beautiful cutting boards made of various solid and paneled hardwoods for not much money that would make great reloading trays. Good woodworkin' to ya, Steve
Cool FC
That's a good idea. Nice job. I haven't fired a gun in about 5 months can't get any primers and don't want to use up my ammo supply. It's been so long since I've shot anything I bet my little girly wrists will buckle when I go to shoot my 500 magnum again.😂🤣😂
WP - Yes it is amazing...I used to use a very firm grip shooting IPSC and Steel, but now, I use the target shooting light grip, even with my heavy 44 Mags - just let the rascal buck and roar - that doesn't work for quick shooting, of course. Best to ya, Steve
My friend drives out here from walnut creek and theres no wait at the range. Check out linden gun range just on the other side of stockton. Non members can make an appointment online.
ej22twagon - Thanks for the tip...I've gotta check this out...would be a good outing with friends...plus drop into a local restaurant for dinner before heading back home... this is a must do later this year when the pandemic is more under control. Best to ya, Steve
Hey Steve! Got a great idea. After you load your 12 guage shells you could use that loading block to hold your called number balls on BINGO night! What do you think about that? Or that would also hold 50 cal. BMG shells.
ABSr - That's a doggon good alternative use for that tray... You do want something nice when the players come up to verify their wins... Have a great day, Steve
Thank u Fortune Cookie...... How did you came up with the hole pattern and spacing??? Size?
MD - Size was easy - use 1" Forstner drill and you can't go wrong - the tray will work for 20 gauge to 10 gauge (10 gauge rim diameter = .933"). A good size for our metallics is 12-13" board (can get up to 60 round capacity) - For shotshell a 15" cutting board. With those, the spacing is easy. I recommend 3/4" thick for the tray and the base can be any thickness hardwood or even pine to thin tackboard material cut with jigsaw or saw of choice. Free wood or leftover shelving is really fine. Good woodworkin' to ya, Steve
What size drill bit? Thanks
How did you lay out the holes?
Jordan - Just did the math...and the more of these trays I do, the better aligned and spaced the holes get. I'm sure you can do a better job with the alignment than I did. - - Steve
Why, Oh Why, do you make reloading trays that only hold 50? I have two of the old Flambeau Twin-60 trays and when I load 50 cases they allow me to keep a visual separation between cases that have gone through a particular process (e.g.: Resizing or Case Mouth Expanding) and cases that have not.
AD - You and I think the same way - I made 55 round reloading trays for my 45/70 for the same feature. For 12 gauge slugs, 50 rounds is good. Good reloadin' to ya, Steve
@@FortuneCookie45LC I'll start reloading again once powder and primers are back "In Stock!" This might be in as little as four years.
@@arthurdevain754 - If the current Pres would open back trade with Eastern Europe and Russia, we'd be up to our ankles with those fine Tula primers, but not much chance of that - in fact, the former Pres couldn't do that as he was under accusations of Russian collusion all the time he was sanctioning and inhibiting Russian activity. No matter, our domestic primers will come back - in our economic system, where there is demand - there will be supply. That isn't true of socialist systems, of course...hmmm, come to think of it.... Best to ya, AD.. Steve
@@FortuneCookie45LC "Unprecedented Demand" is responsible for reloading powder and primers being universally "out of stock." What really happens is this -- manufacturers are producing product as quickly as they can. But they don't sell to retailers like MidwayUSA or Cabela's. They only sell to Wholesale Distributors. These Distributors are not selling to retailers. They sell to "Hoarders" who are willing to pay significantly more. Once the Tyrants enact the BAN, these stockpiles will be worth two to three times the inflated prices that the Hoarders paid for them. But be very careful. The BATFairies will be watching such black market activity very closely!
Nice project but your using your saw backwards that’s why it’s out of square base always on the stock not what’s gonna drop
You ever going to leave California?
VODZ - What..!? And join all the exiting clambering throngs...yes, as soon as I can dispose of my business...takes time... Steve
Did y'all go through a background check and psychological evaluation before getting in?
I got a background check once and they said "so your a crazy person?" I said " I'm fairly certain they will say so" and they just said ok don't forget eye and ear protection....😁
JG - Heaven forbid, not necessary...however, if one tried to purchase some ammo at the range (not much there), we'd have to jump through some hoops first... Best to ya, Steve
@@FortuneCookie45LC Thanks for your response. Stay safe in your metropolis Sir.
Jesus. You have aged. Holy smokes
teucer4 - It's the stress of the times - it's been hard on many people as well. Look at what 4 years of the stress of the Presidency does - no way our current Pres is going to make it unless he simply does nothing and minimizes all his duties. Best to ya, Steve
@@FortuneCookie45LC Love you regardless
A shotgun is not a rifle I don’t know why people do this 👉🏾👎👈🏾
EJ - I'll let you know when I get my gunsmith to install a scope base so I can put a 1X scope on the rascal - Then I can shoot everything from size 8 shot to 12 gauge slugs, and 22LR to 45/70. Have a great day, Steve
