Can Hollywood Go Virtual After Coronavirus?

  • Beginning in March, film production was suspended as shelter-in-place orders went into effect, leaving many in the industry out of work. And while California has given the go ahead for production to resume as of June 12th, it is unclear when film and TV production will return to full capacity. However, technology developed for the video game industry could play a role in getting Hollywood back to work. Virtual production, which was integral in creating the first Star Wars TV show, The Mandalorian, and Disney’s remake of The Lion King, even allowed some filmmakers to continue working while everyone was at home.

If you bothered to read up about this, many of the elements used in the Mandalorian were physical models, scanned into the computer. Whole sets in many cases, as it was sometimes swifter to build a model and scan it, rather than render it in a computer.
What you're looking at above is the reverse of CG. It's filming on-set, using a variety of techniques. Not CG composited backgrounds AFTERWARDS>
Why can't you people take the time to look at what's in front of you, before flapping your soup-coolers?

It's still called "a set". There was a 20th Century Fox movie in 1939 called "When The Rains Came" which won the Academy Award for Visual Effects (great movie, too) that used gigantic amounts of rear projection to the same effect.
It's hilarious that everybody getting all worked up about this terrific timesaving system seems to be ignorant about the entire history of visual effects. Remember when Ripley was rescued by the drop ship in Aliens? Rear Projection. Remember when John Connor was lifted off his motorbike in Terminator 2 with the truck bearing down on him inches behind? Rear projection.
It's a tool. Big deal. And it's terrific, and convincing.

I'm in the Industry as well (set dressing) but I feel like this is jumping the gun a little. From my experience, the majority of films to this day still shoot on location or with built sets in a studio, rather than employing heavy CGI/green screens. In most cases, it's still more economical to shoot that way than to hire VFX artists to create things virtually. It's only when it comes to creating fantastical worlds by big budget productions that the decision to shoot virtually would make sense. Is COVID going to change that? Honestly, I don't think so. The future of the Industry is uncertain, for sure, but my guess is that the main adaptation will be cutting crew, which sucks for us regardless.

VFX and technology have always been innovative tools for visual storytelling and filmmaking, At the same token, you cannot completely eliminate the authenticity from on-location filmmaking. It runs a risk of just being lazy to churn things out fast. One reason we appreciate movies like “American Graffiti”, “Lawrence of Arabia”, “Goodfellas”, “Pulp Fiction” and “Schindler’s List” is because it was really done. “Titanic” even had a fair amount of CGI and virtual environments but the appeal was still building an actual ship. That ship could’ve been totally digital, but I guarantee you it would not have been as authentic. “The Dark Knight” had a real hospital blown up in a massive wide shot explosion. Yes the movie did have it’s CGI moments, but they were minimal. People don’t realize it, but deep down, you always want want to see real things. Everything can’t just dive into digital land. Look at “Inglorious Basterds”, “War Horse”.....even the “Star Wars” franchise, heavily laden with effects, still did practical sets and locations with the live-action cinematic features. That tidbit of knowledge makes it more appealing. When you just digitize everything (especially because of a germ fear) then special effects really aren’t special. Convenience is one thing on occasion, but we can’t let this over-panic of a germ ruin us, folks. You’re taking the fun out of it.

    • @peterbriggs6857

On The Rise Of Skywalker, they took the crew to Wadi Rum: the exact place they shot Lawrence Of Arabia. And erected a bluescreen on location, which prompted the crew to ask why they were bothering being on location.

Absolutely hate CGI. You can so clearly tell when something is digital vs real. The #1 thing that ruins movies nowadays

  • @zergar5671

There will be thousands more smaller movie studies later on. As The led stage pannels become cheaper and cheaper, people will just rent or buy wearhouse space and convert it into digital movie/tv production studios. You wont need big budget teams of 100's or more making movies just a dozen or so. The big movie industry will buy up some of these indie studios just like the videogame industry does.

Want to see Hollywood die off? Only hire the tech guys and watch as indy movies disappear. Less projects to get a green light or able to restore profits on investments with larger budgets so more projects will fail.
Support the artists and the art, not the studios and profits

Pretty soon they are gonna ask actors/models for permission to copy there face to create a computer stimulation of him/her to put in the movie. Actors are gonna love it because they no longer have to rehearse the lines just get a paycheck and movies are gonna love it because they don’t need to pay a stimulator dummy. It’s cost efficient for Hollywood and it benefits actors. Unfortunately I doubt the audience will receive the same magic on screen
