Can Hollywood Go Virtual After Coronavirus?

- Beginning in March, film production was suspended as shelter-in-place orders went into effect, leaving many in the industry out of work. And while California has given the go ahead for production to resume as of June 12th, it is unclear when film and TV production will return to full capacity. However, technology developed for the video game industry could play a role in getting Hollywood back to work. Virtual production, which was integral in creating the first Star Wars TV show, The Mandalorian, and Disney’s remake of The Lion King, even allowed some filmmakers to continue working while everyone was at home.

Can Hollywood Go Virtual After Coronavirus?
In future we will have films with special features like "shot in real world with no CGI".
Lol XD
In the future, they may give us the ability to walk around the sets in VR as a special feature.

Well one things for sure, Hollywood has had plenty of time during the pandemic to come up with original ideas so hopefully we don't see any more lazy reboots, remakes and sequels for a long long time....
Don't count on it. Hollywood doesn't make movies for America any more. They make movies for China. Hollywood will continue to do the woke broke garbage they've been churning out. George Lucas is a god compared to the mediocre directors in Hollywood now.
One can only hope. Otherwise, we can just read or play video games which are being a lot more original.
RIP Hollywoods . they are too politically correct to make any good movies. too many triggers . safe space. they only do remakes, or a watered down version of the original. like ghost bustas duex. LOL take duce.
@@crazydude3542 there is no best director or producer or engineer, you need to experience all possible tech and people experience worldwide to improve your own operations.
@@billgates2581 lol. You're talking about safe spaces and triggers while complaining that the market for movies has expanded beyond being exclusively for your own niche? Manlet hypocrite.
They have even had to cut back on their child molestations.

How about writing better stories first......no ok😔
Dude, you're asking for too much 🤣
Komemba Lohese Maybe🤣
I could care less about Hollywood.
That means you still care about Hollywood lmao
After every pandemic new changes take place and technology evolves.
Wonder how long it will take all this, workflow included, to trickle down to the common man?
After every pLandemic, yes. It's all planned.
Hopefully this country will stop regressing and start progressing.
Yeah, but there are always people going underground, doing things the old way - diy and all
Yes sir they continue to strengthen A.I and dumb down humanity.
The bigger question is... does anyone care? It's Hollywood.
It’s literally been like this for decades. Most old movies where already shot mainly in stage productions and using matte paintings and miniatures for background scenes. Now a days, it has just transitioned from paintings, to green screen, and now to virtual.
No it hasnt lol
Christopher Nolan is furious right now!
Oh well...
Travis Spazz lol true 👍👍👍
I wish California would just succeed from the US already. Than everyone who wants an endless lockdown can migrate there and let the rest of the country go back to normal.
Im guessing you don't live there
Hollywood should be suspended for life.
Say what you want, it still beats green screen.
All techniques have their uses.

Self employment should be your first employment for everyone, the future is not kind to those looking for others to employ them.
Sure. Let's film everything with CGI and ruin movies forever.
If you bothered to read up about this, many of the elements used in the Mandalorian were physical models, scanned into the computer. Whole sets in many cases, as it was sometimes swifter to build a model and scan it, rather than render it in a computer.
What you're looking at above is the reverse of CG. It's filming on-set, using a variety of techniques. Not CG composited backgrounds AFTERWARDS>
Why can't you people take the time to look at what's in front of you, before flapping your soup-coolers?
@@peterbriggs6857 how is this "filming on set"
It's filming on a VR set.
It's about the crew not going to a geographical place.
They mastered rear projection and used if for more shots.
they already do, they are called cartoons
@@groupstink3466 The sets are backdrops. They use practical scene foreground extensions, and props. The floors are physical and matched to the backgrounds. It's no different from theater. It's still called "a set". There was a 20th Century Fox movie in 1939 called "When The Rains Came" which won the Academy Award for Visual Effects (great movie, too) that used gigantic amounts of rear projection to the same effect.
It's hilarious that everybody getting all worked up about this terrific timesaving system seems to be ignorant about the entire history of visual effects. Remember when Ripley was rescued by the drop ship in Aliens? Rear Projection. Remember when John Connor was lifted off his motorbike in Terminator 2 with the truck bearing down on him inches behind? Rear projection.
It's a tool. Big deal. And it's terrific, and convincing.
The mcu is a master on this class :). So many good franchises ruined because of it's influence.
I make movies for a living and if virtual production is my future, I'm OUT!!! Yuck!! There is something magical that happens on set that I never want to miss.
Improvise. Adapt. Overcome.
100 years ago, horse cart drivers are complaining like you when cars rolled out on the streets of Europe and America.
I'm in the Industry as well (set dressing) but I feel like this is jumping the gun a little. From my experience, the majority of films to this day still shoot on location or with built sets in a studio, rather than employing heavy CGI/green screens. In most cases, it's still more economical to shoot that way than to hire VFX artists to create things virtually. It's only when it comes to creating fantastical worlds by big budget productions that the decision to shoot virtually would make sense. Is COVID going to change that? Honestly, I don't think so. The future of the Industry is uncertain, for sure, but my guess is that the main adaptation will be cutting crew, which sucks for us regardless.
That's fine. Your local theater will have you. There's plenty of people to replace you.
Working in the video village on set is virtual production, and has been that way since Coppola shot "One From The Heart" in 1982.
I felt exactly the same when photography went from film to digital.
It took me over 5 years to "break" and buy digital gear; 5 years after it was mainstream.
Adapted and proceeded.
Was just wondering what this means for jobs?
Mac Pro can't render this.
SCREW mac pro. It isn't the only computer out there.
Ayveh I have a computer and it’s not Mac Pro XD
Ayveh its the most powerful
FRU FRU FRU FRU FRU FRU nope
FRU FRU FRU FRU FRU FRU damn you stupid any gaming pc could kick it’s ass
made fun of video game devs for years saying "video game is not art!" and now the very thing they mucked is the only thing saving there sorry ass
So don't worry...crap movies can still be made!
This is mind blowing tech. I a siting here just out of my bed and my brain is upto speed without coffee. this video was absolutely amazing.
So all movies will be super advanced cartoons.
Nope. This is for production or pre production which at the end helps you in the actual shoot.
No. This technology is no different from what Stanley Kubrick used on 2001 A Space Odyssey in the 1960s, except it's more adaptable.
Peter Briggs vr was not a thing back then
plot twist: no one in this video is real, but computer generated by skynet
Thanks for the shout out 1:11 🍻
huge
I miss the real feeling of older (pre-CG) movies that used REAL sets and had a lived-in feel! Now it's up to the CG processors to "dirty" up the footage...
Hollywood can go to hell as far as I'm concerned!
Nothing comes close to being as good as good old fashioned natural backgrounds, if you want something in the shot, find it or build it.
You didn't see The Mandalorian, did you? There were shots where you simply couldn't tell you weren't on location. And that's a lot more compelling than a bad cyclorama.
Lol, you're living in the past, my friend.
More jobs being lost to computers/technology, we are screwing ourselves out of future ability to work
We already do that, it's called CGI.
The real question is can Hollywood JUST GO AWAY? Take the NFL,THE VIEW and new country music with them .
And anything you that you like, if there is indeed anything. None of the above are you forced to watch at gunpoint.
@ Bro you don't even know. Last night I was getting mugged and the guy made me watch the latest View episode on his iPod Video 32GB
Then he pecked me on the cheek and told me my name is Morgan. WHAT IS HAPPENING?
Good for heros but many people's lost their job like back artist and dummys job. if it goes virtual
It's part of evalution it also creates more new job to more VR AR Artist
And instead, 3D effect specialists, animators and modelers become more numerous. The industry is always shifting.
True but I believe this decision has already been made before the pandemic. Like Disney all there new movies were filmed in virtual and smaller studios usually follow the bigger ones. So saldy I think we already in that world. I like full on sets the cool factor of a big set being made is awsome but that is no loner a thing companies are doing.
I feel like ready player one is gonna predict this all happening
we recently learned that open spaces are the best way to be gathered if you need to gather, so why the closed sets if we know that it is less safe?
Who cares about Hollywood?
VFX and technology have always been innovative tools for visual storytelling and filmmaking, At the same token, you cannot completely eliminate the authenticity from on-location filmmaking. It runs a risk of just being lazy to churn things out fast. One reason we appreciate movies like “American Graffiti”, “Lawrence of Arabia”, “Goodfellas”, “Pulp Fiction” and “Schindler’s List” is because it was really done. “Titanic” even had a fair amount of CGI and virtual environments but the appeal was still building an actual ship. That ship could’ve been totally digital, but I guarantee you it would not have been as authentic. “The Dark Knight” had a real hospital blown up in a massive wide shot explosion. Yes the movie did have it’s CGI moments, but they were minimal. People don’t realize it, but deep down, you always want want to see real things. Everything can’t just dive into digital land. Look at “Inglorious Basterds”, “War Horse”.....even the “Star Wars” franchise, heavily laden with effects, still did practical sets and locations with the live-action cinematic features. That tidbit of knowledge makes it more appealing. When you just digitize everything (especially because of a germ fear) then special effects really aren’t special. Convenience is one thing on occasion, but we can’t let this over-panic of a germ ruin us, folks. You’re taking the fun out of it.
On The Rise Of Skywalker, they took the crew to Wadi Rum: the exact place they shot Lawrence Of Arabia. And erected a bluescreen on location, which prompted the crew to ask why they were bothering being on location.
The Volume is an efficient and exciting system that opens up a wide range of possibilities for filmmakers.
Lies again? Stronger And Faster
CNBC your doing great with this kind of small documentaries but yet so effective kudos to the team
Asking the important questions. Keep up the good work!
Would be but not all of them, for example usually the Academy award of best visual effect are mostly awarded to the movie that's not using CGI.
I hope this leads to game engines becoming more powerful, making games look even better and realistic.
Honestly, this new film production reality sounds really sad and boring. 😞 anyone can create movies on the computer . But not all can travel around the world and experience the magic of being on a real movie set
Most of the backgrounds used in The Mandalorian were existing places like Iceland that the crew went out to and photographed. Why use the expense of taking a crew to Iceland, if you can bring Iceland to you?
It's cheaper to use a CGI actor or actress instead of using a real person.
Also cheaper to use A.I. for voice acting instead of using a real person.
Technology will catch-up ... you can't say "will never happen" forever.
Lets hope not...Hollywood needs to burn down to make room for something less cancerous.
Can Hollywood Go To Hell After Coronavirus?
The matrix is here
So what do you miss make it so that studios would have to pay the talent less than they currently get and special effects artist and editors should be getting paid more because they're worth more to the movie and the studio?
So is this a return to studio filmmaking?
Hollywood can completely disappear as far as I'm concerned. I much rather do something real instead.
Hollywood is dead.... Indie filming is where it's at. No huge studio with a agenda deciding which movies are made..
Who cares, these ppl are sick
This is such an over reaction. Movie actors will just need to test daily and limit social contact off set. Solved
That looks like a lot of equipment as opposed to just having a cinematographer. Look at all that equipment. How much is that costing and what % of the budget is all the equipment and VR cameras they use? I bet that takes a lot of money. Soon, you won't need a real live actor.
That would be absolutely terrible.
Looks like we need more people to go back to school and learn animation and computer architecture.
Right, I feel bad for them...they have to learn something all over again when they already studied their field and were good at it.
Learn to code! 🤣
Go read some of the Mandalorian articles. There were a lot of physical models built and scanned into the computer, not just CG rendered items.
@@Ayveh That is the problem with Boomers. They learn something once and expect to do the same thing for 50 years. Stop feeling bad for Boomers. They destroyed the world for everyone. In reality, the learning never ends. Just go back and earn another degree.
yes, they probably could. go search for the vid of how they use the unreal engine to make the disney's mandolorian(sp?) before i saw that, i really thought they shot a lot of it live in the mountains and inside building..it was all CGI done live time in a circular screen room..i was stunned..
Did you even watch the video lol😂
🙄 Hey, geniuses: why not weather the storm with both animation* and start producing audio drama for radio broadcast and/or internet streaming?
For example, imagine the animated adventures of the Winchester brothers of 'Supernatural.' I mean, Eric Kripke could finally make a desert-set episode!
*At least FOX is smart enough to keep its Sunday animation line-up (including renewing the great 'Bless the Harts'!)
All directors should mobilize on a vr experience
If a physical set were needed (For whatever reason), the metrics from a virtual set Created in virtual reality can merely be plugged into A 3D printer and 3D printed, no?
3d printing large objects is obscenely time-consuming, and then it still needs to be painted. Making whatever it is out of plywood and plaster would still be more efficient if a large physical object is still needed.
i pirate stuff soooo who cares???
Absolutely hate CGI. You can so clearly tell when something is digital vs real. The #1 thing that ruins movies nowadays
There will be thousands more smaller movie studies later on. As The led stage pannels become cheaper and cheaper, people will just rent or buy wearhouse space and convert it into digital movie/tv production studios. You wont need big budget teams of 100's or more making movies just a dozen or so. The big movie industry will buy up some of these indie studios just like the videogame industry does.
Hollywood could go away and we would all be better off
0:55 Did anyone else see his mouth glitch??
I think it’s better if they made more animated films. At least Japan is doing the wisest decision with their own.
Surprise surprise
Not
There will be no use for actors & all the other people on movie sets soon .
As it will be in most industries. Service, health etc.
But movie ticket prices will continue to increase. Last time I paid for a movie was a decade ago. God bless torrents.
what about voice actors
MineCreeepersTv Same
Hasan Minaj has an amazing special effects team. It feels like the old show is back.
We're never looking back
Those LED screens are stunning
No because it wouldn't make money
The thing that could happen is we see more animated content
haven't missed it
I’ve seen the same article from Insider a week ago “How Mandalorian uses VR sets instead of green screen and how it changes the Hollywood production soon.”
Nice copying mate 😂😜🤣
I went to college in the 70s, majored in film.
I don't understand what the hell is going on in this.
Boycotting holly weird
thats why Mangolorian felt like a guy walking through the desert for 50 minutes each
whats to stop a movie studio from reserecting long dead actors to be in movies because it cheaper than having live actors

That would be a tough challenge for independent movies and young talents.
Make a movie like that or you won't be able to make a movie at all. Even more monopolization.
I'm sure open source software will be capable of the same soon, if it isn't already. Blender already does for free what Hollywood was just figuring out 10 years ago.

Where would the drones be without Hollywood & the media? They would have to think for themselves.
Boycott Hollywood!
Bruh, the mandalorian was not the first star wars tv show
This is both exciting and interesting as far as development goes. But could this mean an end to real practical locations in the future?
Want to see Hollywood die off? Only hire the tech guys and watch as indy movies disappear. Less projects to get a green light or able to restore profits on investments with larger budgets so more projects will fail.
Support the artists and the art, not the studios and profits
Why would Indie movies disappear? People have more access to tools and distribution platforms than ever before in the history of film making.
technology can't write a decent script - and lately neither can the industry hacks in tinseltown
Pretty soon they are gonna ask actors/models for permission to copy there face to create a computer stimulation of him/her to put in the movie. Actors are gonna love it because they no longer have to rehearse the lines just get a paycheck and movies are gonna love it because they don’t need to pay a stimulator dummy. It’s cost efficient for Hollywood and it benefits actors. Unfortunately I doubt the audience will receive the same magic on screen
Go ahead, blockbuster movies are a spectacle one shouldn't expect gritty realism from them. There are different movies to cater for those audience all types can coexist.
Awesome video. Can we get the author/reporter credited for the piece? Possibly producer or director?
This is the movie industry wanting to sit on their asses and do very little while still asking a premium price for a ticket.
finally the end of the Hollywood beast
Technology has been there like Final fantasy spirits within. Technology can't be a replacement for story. Technology enhances the script.
This kinda sucks cause I’m a student in film and it hit us hard
But, come on - you're not beholden to this type of creating. You can venture off into a more independent realm man. So many others have throughout time.
So much for packing up my one suitcase to chase my dreams in LA.
This is huge for the film industry and for gaming. I love where this is going. Creating the stories we love while keeping everyone safe is everything. As a filmmaker and video editor, the potential here is incredible.
