Hey there! thanks for all your resources! Can you explain in detail why you don't shoot slog3 and prefer slog2?? Doesn't slog3 have more information to work in shadows/highlights? thank you!
While you are correct about your statement, the A7iii is an 8-bit camera and when you push it to past its limits, SLOG3, you are bound to have banding easily because you have less colors to work with compared to 10-bit. A simple “8-bit vs 10-bit” video will help you more on that.
For slo mo with the A7iii we either shoot with 4K 30fps and slow that down by 80% (though we would t call this SLO mo I guess) or 1080p 120fps. We usually avoid 60fps on the A7iii as the bit rate and image quality isn’t as good
@@apipmyblack hey man! We think the A7iv is a brilliant camera. Compared to the 8-bit A7iii it’s 10-bit which is so much easier for grading. You can also finally do 60fps at 4K which is huge despite it being a crop. If someone was looking at either the a7iv or A7iii I’d definitely ask what budget they have. If you’re doing just narrative 24fps, the A7iv will not be too much of an upgrade from the a7iii but if you are looking to do 4K SLO mo then the A7iv is much better. Both are great hybrid cameras. The A7iv definitely competes more with the Fuji X-T4 and Canon R5 hybrid cameras

I just wanted to ask you about how do you measure the exposure while shooting s-log2 (+2) or HLG3 (+-0), do you see the in camera meter? the histogram? Both? Do you use zebras for highlights? And what about the metering mode? Do you set it to multi, or center? Sorry for too many questions, I just need a brief and general answer hah
Hey Juan! That’s awesome to hear, we’re glad you’ve decided to keep the A7iii a while longer, it’s definitely overlooked with the images you can produce. We actually have a video coming later out this month (99% most likely) on how to perfectly expose for Slog2 and HLG3 on the A7iii. But in brief, we use the metering mode (M.M.) on the lcd screen (middle of the bottom of the screen) and use spot metering. Got Slog2, correct, we expose for +2 stops. So making sure the number besides M.M is +2. If it’s flashing then you’re overexposing. We use spot metering and first point this at our subject, if it’s a person then their face. Then we’ll expose till it gets to +2.0 and then compose our clip. If we’re overexposed we use an ND Filter to lower the exposure. If it’s under exposed we lower the Aperture value (open it up) or bump the iso up. Max like 1000 iso but 1600 is still passable. We’ll write about HLG later today
@@meliorstudios Thanks a lot for the reply! That was my doubt, what does the camera consider +2 stops when it's on multi M.M, a bit difficult to calculate. So exposing for the subject or area of interest with spot metering is going to be the solution! Thanks again, very helpful!

hi guys, and thanks first of all. i set hlg3 in my camera and i will do some tests at night. I recently bought the andycine 4k plus external monitor. it's normal that the image is darker than the camera monitor? What settings for brightness, contrast, saturation, color, have you set on your externalmonitor? on the monitor do you use lut? thank you, and keep it up
Hey Paolo! Thanks for taking the time to watch the vid! And that problem may just be to the different brightness levels of the different screens you use. And we haven’t adjusted any of the colour settings on our Andycine monitor settings. We just use The HLG3 image that comes straight out the camera, as most of the time it’s very close to the end look we’re going for
@@meliorstudios in no case do you use lut in the external monitor just for a better view?? Do you prefer to observe on the external monitor always in slog2 and hlg3? what parameters for backlight, brightness, contrast, saturation and color did you set on the external monitor?
@@paologambi8312 Not often actually tho we probably should probably use a rec.709 LUT for S-log2. You can actually use the S-log2 rec.709 look preview that's built into the camera. And we kept the settings of the monitor exactly how it came, though we do keep the brightness at 100 most of the time. The main reason we use an external monitor is for pulling focus and compositions. The larger screen helps with both!
Just when I first got my a7iii, I found that looking at the back LCD for judging exposure, my photos came out very dark after importing to the computer, even if the back LCD showed perfect exposure when taking the photo. You have to turn off DRO (Dynamic Range Optimization) in the settings. When left on, the back LCD is not representing the real exposure in a good way. So I think your external monitor is actually showing you the right image in this case
So, i have copied all of these picture profile settings to a tee, but i seem to be having trouble when it comes to the actual quality of the videos themselves. It alwas seems like when i finish editing the quality of the video has dropped by at least half and is no longer a crisp looking video. Even when i am editing it looks worse in quality than i feel like it should. Im not sure what i could be missing but any advice would be greatly appreciated! Love the videos, thank you for the amazing content and information!
I apply these settings but it doesn't save when i turn off my camera and turn it back on, am i doing something wrong? Also it only applies to the dial you set them on right?
Hey Jay, sorry to hear you’re having some problems. You have to use the memory recall feature on the camera. I’ll link a vid that goes through it well: ruclips.net/video/Wa5voIxwsPI/видео.html
Hi Amelia! Usually the reason for noisy footage is the footage not being exposed correctly. If you can expose for +2.0 over exposed then I suggest using Slog2. Otherwise For darker situations I recommend using HLG3. Which gamma are you finding your noise is most grainy?
@@meliorstudios Thanks for the swift response! Slog2 is the one I've been using. But you're right, I think I haven't exposed correctly! And will definitely try out HLG3 next time. And I'm also shooting with slow mo settings a lot of the time which probably doesn't help.
@@ameliamagdalena4307 we’re currently making a tutorial on how to expose for Slog2 correctly which will hopefully be out soon. But yes, shooting 1080p Slow motion will give you grainy images no matter what you do as the codec with 1080p is prone to breaking up really easily. Hence why if anyone wants to shoot a lot of slow motion, we usually recommend a different cameras. The alternative is using the Denoise feature in Davinci Resolve Studio, but that of course means purchasing the studio version of Davinici. But it’s saved our butt a lot of times when working with slo mo footage on the A7iii. It kinda makes it bearable
Hi, thanks for the information. Would you know how to configure the sony a7 III so that the color is as compatible as the sony a7s3 configured on the pp8, gamut: slog3, color mode: s-gamut3.cine. white balance: 4000k. That is, I need to film with these two cameras and for the color to be as similar as possible. It happens to me that the a7 III is leaving me with a pink tone that dyes the entire image, while the a7s3 reflects real colors much better.
Hey! I would suggest you used the Slog2 PP7 profile we suggested as this will alleviate some of the magenta shift on the A7iii as well as giving you the most Dynamic Range. I'd say then to match with the Sony a7siii you'd just have to have a good eye in post color grading to match the shots. I've done it before and it's not too bad but in lower light conditions it can get tricky. Just keep an eye on the waveforms
Hey guys! You can do this using the memory recall function in Sony Settings and assign each setting to either the 1 or 2 dial on top of the camera. Josh at Make Art Now made a great video about this: ruclips.net/video/Wa5voIxwsPI/видео.html

This is incredibly helpful, thanks so much for making this video! Quick question, do you use certain zebra settings for Slog2 and HLG3 to expose them correctly? Or is there another exposure method you use besides zebras? Still trying to nail down the best way to expose on the A7iii. Thanks again!
Hey Harris, Thanks for taking the time to watch the video! For Slog2 we do often use zebras, setting them at a value of 107+ but for HLG we just use the exposure number and ensure the value for the exposure is at +/- 0. We hope that makes sense

The fuji has many great features such as the automatic 10bit without the need of an external recorder making grading easier and the 4k quality 60fps slow-mo! @@meliorstudios And what color input do you choose in davinci resolve? can't find ITU.709 for slog2..Thank you for your help
Colour input you select Rec.709 if using ITU.709
So I’m filming a tv show idk which is better to shoot in though slog or hlg3
thank youuuuuuuuu!
Thanks for watching
hi guys, and thanks first of all. i set hlg3 in my camera and i will do some tests at night.
@@meliorstudios 709 look preview into the camera ? can you explain me? never seen this feature before
How to color transform slog2 and ITU in the davinci resolve?
Very useful video, thanks
We’re glad you found it useful!
For s log 2 part why not s log 2 gamut? What’s the difference between itu and gamut
Hey bro, what did you us aperture +1 or +2 when you shots on s-log2 and what loots do you use (2:27 - time this video -sky)?
Love your videos! Do you have any similar tips but for the a7siii ?
Unfortunately we don’t have enough experience with the A7siii to comment on this. But if we ever get to test it we’ll definitely let you know!
Did you ever figure out this problem?
If we use itu 709 Matrix ....so how was our post processed.....
I apply these settings but it doesn't save when i turn off my camera and turn it back on, am i doing something wrong?
Also it only applies to the dial you set them on right?
Hey Jay, sorry to hear you’re having some problems. You have to use the memory recall feature on the camera. I’ll link a vid that goes through it well:
ruclips.net/video/Wa5voIxwsPI/видео.html
@@meliorstudios I appreciate the help!
@@meliorstudios also do you guys use a ND filter on your Slog2 shots if needed?
Hey man, yeah we use a variable ND most of the time when shooting with Slog2
Does this work for low light situations? Whenever I shoot late afternoon or at night, my footage is noisy...
Thank you so much ✨ You’re great!
hi guys which settings in CST for hlg3 to convert in 709? thank you
We use Rec.709 for both the input Gamma and input Colour space
Hi how to convert slog2??
Convert loot slog2 to 709 or I can grading with out it?
@@komixy2013 you can convert slog2 to Rec.709 using CST. Tho we’ve also shown how to grade Slog2 here: ruclips.net/video/u5oiaixAQ8Y/видео.html
@@meliorstudios sorry what is CST?🙈

is the same picture profiles for a7iv?
what are the standard isos for HLG 3? I heard that its 800 & 4000 for S-Log2. Found nothing yet
native iso in a7iii camera is 800 , so in any iso mode should be 800
native iso in a7iii camera is 800 , so in any iso mode should be 800
Hi, thanks for the information.
Just keep an eye on the waveforms
can i record slog2 and hlg3 at the same time
Unfortunately not. You have to shoot one or the other depending on how much light you have available to shoot with
Will this work with the A7R3?
Yes, same principle!
@@meliorstudios thank you!
EPIC!
Thanks a lot Lucid!
How do these settings stay saved ? Every time I turn off my camera they go back to older settings
Hey guys! You can do this using the memory recall function in Sony Settings and assign each setting to either the 1 or 2 dial on top of the camera. Josh at Make Art Now made a great video about this: ruclips.net/video/Wa5voIxwsPI/видео.html
thanks dude
He visto todos tus vídeos y son verdaderamente útiles. Tengo una pregunta: Por qué recomiendas más usar el espacio de gama ITU. 709 MATRIX y no el S-Gamut.3 cine que todo el mundo recomienda? Me ayudarías mucho resolviendo esa duda. Larga vida a tu canal!
Agrego: No quise decir espacio de gama, si no el Color Mode. Atento a tu respuesta!
¡Hola! Usamos ITU.709 MATRIX en lugar de S.gammut porque hay menos cambio magenta con este perfil.
Lo siento, mi español no es muy bueno
Thanks 🔥
We hope you found it helpful!
@@meliorstudios Yess a lot really thanks for your work
@@Marco-hx4zx thanks for watching!
@@meliorstudios Amazing, thank you so much for the helpful response! You rock!
Melior, do you have an opinion on Fuji?
Hey there! As it happens the 2 cameras we currently are using in rotation are the Sony a7iii and the fujifilm x-t4. The fuji has many great features such as the automatic 10bit without the need of an external recorder making grading easier and the 4k quality 60fps slow-mo! We will make a video on the fuji eventually so keep your eyes peeled on our instagram or our story polls anticipating it
@@meliorstudios why don't you use fuji as the main camera, considering the 10 bit and 60 fps?
@@paologambi8312 we agree that the Fuji is the better camera, though we recently just bought the camera and are still getting to grips with the workflow of the camera. We’re very comfortable with the A7iii but once we get to a similar stage with the X-T4 we’ll probably start using that camera much more
Are you using them settings for 120fps?
Yes! For 120fps and 24fps
how about for awb
We often leave the white balance at AWB unless we’re wanting to go for a different or a more specific look, then we’ll use custom Wb
Needed this🤍
Glad you found it helpful !
@@jncampora muchas gracias
how do you color grade this profiles pls
We've made a tutorial here on how to grade S-log2 & HLG3: ruclips.net/video/03ugQ7WoAOU/видео.html
What ISO do you guys shoot either profile in?
S-log2 (PP7) always try and shoot at ISO 800. And HLG3 (PP1) as low as possible (ideally below ISO 1000)
Hello Melior Studio, a question, when I want to do the transformation of slog itu 709 matrix, or hlg 709, I can not get the color as you have an additional configuration such as put it in color davinci yrgb color managed color process HDR Davinci Wide Gamut Intermediate, or I leave it as factory configuration
But if you use S-Log with an 8-bit camera, the colors will break when you transform the color space to Rec. 709.
Over expose to avoid noise & grade it yourself. Slog 2 is way better for luts you have more control.
Why ITU709 Matric instead of Gamut?
