Hi! Thank you for the detailed recipe on film simulations! Wanted to check if this would work in Sony ZV1 as well, since its been launched a few years ago.
Thank you for an amazing video, subbed. I feel the value of shooting with a baked-in look (as opposed to flat) for me personally is that it forces one to focus more on how the scene looks, is lit, and is framed AS IT EXISTS, rather than as it COULD exist "if I tweaked it in post". Obviously post-production is essential to the process either way, but people who shoot on film generally understand the necessity of getting as much as possible correct in camera and there's a lot to be said for that approach.
yeah you're right, while i love having more control in post, lighting & composition are more important and should not be 'fixed' in color grading, so i agree with you. Glad you found this video helpful and i hope you have fun shooting with these profiles ! :D
pls a explanation video about the settings names... knee, gamma, etc.. Thank you for this video, i'm also playing around with the settings to make my recipes. But still figuring out so much
3:33 are you adding halation / glow in post? Or is it a black mist filter? or is that all done in the PP? your fuji400h blew my mind, wow! Also, how did you do that shot at 3:35, did you walk with a gimbal and then point up, and speed up the tunnel part? Gorgeous.
Adding halation in post yeah :D unfortunately can't get that out of camera. And yeah that's exactly how i did it, i remember my hands were freezing cuz we were shooting for couple hours that day in near freezing temperature. So yeah, thanks:{ warms up my heart receiving comments like this

love the mood at the inro all the night shots have a low key lighting and urban but not busy locations . they have a surreal feel . how do you find a location like at 0:19mn . what's you criteria to achieve this surreal feeling . for me i try to avoid crowded areas and overly lit areas .also what's your inspiration? for me watching david lynch movies and edward hopper paintings. would love to see a whole short film shot at night ,mysterious and surreal.
Wow thanks, heheh, i appreciate it. Finding locations it's pretty hard when you live in a small city like me, but there are always some hidden gems waiting to be discovered. I usually try to wonder on small streets, away from the city center or any popular streets, be careful with creepers tho, some neighbourhood are also very dangerous and you can get robbed. Really hard to explain in a couple words how i achieve the mood, since is very much based on my present feelings, so everyday i grade differently based on how i feel the movie, what it represents to me. I think very much in elements, message, trying to convey the composition, story and the characters with the whole story of the video, so that everything falls right into place.
I love david lynch, but as for inspiration, idk, i always liked darkness and the feeling night gave me, have a lot of memories playing with kids at night, so that probably is a strong influence for me. I'll post a 8bit grading tutorial, explaining how i understand color grading and what i take into consideration before starting.
As for the short film, i am actually working on a 30-45 minute movie, you can check out the brief on my website. I'll make a trailer video about it in the following months and probably explaining what the story is about in the following months
Just got into watching Euphoria the Show on HBO and said to myself “wow I love the look of this show (grading) “ This video will literally help me achieve that look ! Thanks so much ! I’m going to test it on my A7iv
I really like the mood of this video, nice shots and lovely color manipulation SIR. Can I ask which one do you recommend for biking scenes in the nature, especially in forest where there is a bit less light? Cheers!
Thank you so much! EvPro+Night for most flexibility in grading, Ektar 100 or Blue Velvet-Cinestill50D would render beautiful green colors and earthy skintones
Both! In photo mode it will be baked into the JPEG only, raw files need matching, and you can use these presets www.veresdenialex.com/product-page/sony-film-simulation-presets-lightroom-presets
You can use them only as Picture profile inside camera, and they will give you better color than sony factory settings, but to get the same results and get closer to the film look you will need the Creative Film Power Grades.

Great videos and great profiles! Do you have any advice regarding WB settings to use with these? Can they be used with AWB? You mentioned that you suggest using a lower kelvin value (500-1000 lower) for some profiles, but does that solve green (or magenta) tint problems as well?
Thanks! Next week i'll be posting a video answering many of questions people are having, and also explaining how i shoot these profiles in terms of exposure, temperature and color filter. Make sure to check that out 🐳
@@veresdenialex I had the same question because I tested all PPs today at 5600k (1 light). I achieved almost the same results (except noise values, blacks, saturation, DR, and rolloff - ). The best PP in this scenario was PP6 (and PP3 for oranges and greens - fuji 400H). Using my old 6300 and helios 44-2 and takumar set + mist 1/4.
You are welcome! I made more film simulations since this video, check the website for all of them. Also there is a forum where you can ask questions and post pictures
Hey man , I loved it. Earned a new subscriber. Just wanted to ask, I have been comparing rx7 , Ricoh and xt30ii. After watching this video , I am so tempted to just get RX7, but does the 1inch sensor really provide more photo quality than smartphones ?
When talking straight out of camera, the rx100VI is better than a smartphone in daylight situations. In lowlight you will need to edit your raw files to get better results, as the smartphone does some HDR and in camera noise reduction bs
Hey man these are great! I do have a question about post in DaVinci: do they require a colour managed space or a CST node? Which colour space/gamma would these require?
Use CST and adjust saturation, hue on your liking. After translating them to rec709 some profiles might look too pink or too saturated, so it needs to be toned down in post processing
@@veresdenialex what color space/input gamma would you recommend? The CST node effect appears to be geared towards LOG profiles for Sony cameras as it only contains sgamut/sgamut3/sgamut3cine color spaces for Sony and slog/slog2/slog3 gammas. Even setting up your project as a color managed space I run into the same issue 😵💫
@@deathwaits1613 well, not all color spaces needs conversion, for example pro color, is actually a small color space which does not need translation to rec709 because it's very very close to it. Usually you need the conversion to rec709 with big color spaces for accurate color reproduction, like s gamut, to translate them to your monitor screen and render accurate colors. You don't need that with small color spaces like Still, Movie, Pro and so on. You need to use it on Bigger spaces like cinema, bt2020, s-gamut to come closer to how colors will actually look like. use the cst to convert the color if the film simulation uses a wide color space like s-gamut and so on. You can also choose to convert the input gamma if it uses something flat like HLG or Log, but it's not needed for Gammas like Still Movie Cine1 which are already very contrasty. just grade it manually with your preferred tools, like the primaries wheels or curves.
@@deathwaits1613 also, always translate the color to your monitor, or the final medium (theatre, tv's, where ever it will be watched) meaning if you use Portra 800, which uses Cinema color space (DCI-P3) and you use a monitor which can render DCI-P3, then you don't necessary need translation, because you can see the accurate colors on your screen.
Great question, and yes they do! I've posted some sample temperature settings in the pinned comment. Try those out! Of course, at the beginning I was going by the feel of it, changing them all the time on the spot depending on what kind of colors I saw and how I wanted to influence the overall colors to cut post-processing as much as possible straight out of camera. So initially I didn't include any kelvin temperature settings in the video, but I quickly realized people needed some guidance to start with. So later on I decided to settle on a certain look for each film simulation, and gave sample temperature settings for the kelvin and color filter to help starters get similar colors to what I was getting on the Blog www.veresdenialex.com/post/sony-film-simulations-recipes-best-sony-picture-profiles
@@veresdenialex Yeah, I just noticed the suggestions after writing that 😅 Anyways, great stuff, thanks! Just put these in this morning and have just tested them indoors, but can already see me doing less in post.
Just stumbled upon this and I'm glad I did. I recently bought a Sony camera. Does this film profiles work for still photography or strictly for videos only? Thanks for your work!
It works for both video and photo modes, but for photos it will be baked only in the JPEG. The Raw file cannot contain the picture profile information and need color matching. That's why I created the RAW presets www.veresdenialex.com/sony-film-simulation
Nice jobs really, your sharing show me how powerful are the Sony cameras, also helps me shoot photos straight out of camera with pleasant color, thanks a lot. But there is still a problem bothering me, I know you offered some color settings above, but kelvin should be flexible with the environment changed, should I also change the color filter? If so, how should I change it?
First, change the kelvin as needed for your environment, if you are hitting any extreme limits like 2500k or 9900k and still need more warmth or coolness, then use the color filter. I also use the color filter to adjust the tint of the image, but I mostly leave it as the recipe mentions.
Glad you like the profiles, you are welcome. Consider supporting the channel by buying the luts if you want to see more videos like this one. There are over 40 classic film colors and 40 different contrast gammas in the package which gives a lot of flexibility. Thanks!
Gives a good image out of the camera so there is little or no color grading needed. Giving you a good base to start from, in terms or color and contrast. S-log3 will give you the most flexibility in post, but sometimes you don't have time to color grade, or there is no budget for anything fancy.
That’s understandable, but the colors in your video is absolutely beautiful! Even with color grading on resolve at xdr 1600 nits, it’s a quite difficult, there’s too many parameters, lol! For one, the right exposure, I’m experimenting with going from +2 on the metering to +1 or 0 just so I can get the most dynamics on skin tone to grade, seems like there’s a little bit to it’s curves! But thanks to you, I’m really excited to adjust temp and in body color adjustments again, so thank you!!!
Yeah they are really fun to work with, i initially made them for myself, and after 8 months of experimenting and testing, i wanted to share these profiles with everybody. In total this project took me about a whole year with shooting and editing it as well, so i'm really glad people are liking it. Thanks for watching, in about two weeks i'll come back with another video on how i expose, set color filter on each profile and how to use the creative LUTs more efficiently, so don't forget about that. Have a great one!
Good question! Honestly not quite sure, but i would have to make some comparison testing with the color checker to try emulate it, anyways you would still have to post process it to enhance the colors because i feel cinestill 800t is quite a complex and unique film stock.
Thanks for this. I might be able to get a used sony a7riii, but I really want the Fuji film sims. I know Sony captures as much iOS more image info. I just dint want to do much, if any, additional work to photos. I’m not going to be pro. This video is really helping lean towards the used (and cheaper) Sony.

That’s dope! Awesome work man!
I am a long time Sony owner, and just sold my fujifilm just after 1 month owning it, because I cannot get used to the control of it. And ever since I only shoot with my adjusted creative style for my Sony. Hoping to shoot straight out from camera without too much coloring. And now you provide us these amazing work, it really open up our creativity when shooting. You are awesome.
Thanks my man! I'm so happy to see this video is helping out people all around the world.
What fun! I needed this sooooo bad. I've been in an HLG3 rut that I just wouldn't let myself out of. I programmed these into my b-cam and had a blast shooting random nothingness all afternoon. Thanks so much - keep up the great work.
Heheh, yeah that sounds really nice, i think it's most fun when you just shoot nothingness and play around with the profiles. Glad to hear that you had fun shooting with them, it takes some time figuring them out, but if you experiment around with the Kelvin and the Color filter you definitely get some nice results. Have a great one!

These are just so fun to use! Thank you very much for your work! Better to do it in camera if you’re working with an 8-bit codec and these days so much is made directly for the web so fast workflows that still allows for some creative touches are so valuable. I’ve subscribed and hope for some videos where you just describe your process and reflect upon how the different settings seems to effect the image. Regards from Sweden!

It takes some time cuz youtube it's just a hobby at the moment, but the tutorial will help a lot of people, so can't wait to finish it. Thanks again for the support and have fun shooting with them:D

i tried some of these settings but not the section in regards to detail or colour depth yet. i wasnt happy with colour in my sports photos because oranges yellows would infect everything. Now with these settings its actually effected my raw file! its bloody good as. Greens now come out green or predominately green. my skin is coming out WAY WAY better than before. the colour is good straight of the bat, the highlight rolloff with skin from your settings here also help raw file and make it look nicer! thankyou got this video!

love the mood at the inro all the night shots have a low key lighting and urban but not busy locations . they have a surreal feel . how do you find a location like at 0:19mn . what's you criteria to achieve this surreal feeling . for me i try to avoid crowded areas and overly lit areas .also what's your inspiration? for me watching david lynch movies and edward hopper paintings. would love to see a whole short film shot at night ,mysterious and surreal.

Great job here these are amazing! Thanks for sharing!

@@veresdenialex I don´t have lightroom unfortunately, because of adobes absurd pricing strategies :(
Hey man these are great!
Wow amazing! What WB do you recommend on the EVpro?
Depending on the scene, but usually 1000 kelvin lower than normal
Superb work man!🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thank ya!
First video I see on film sims for Sony Thanks
Glad I could help
Are the designed to use a specific white balance mode in mind? Should one just use auto for stills or go by feel?
Great work.

@@veresdenialex Appreciate your work! How will I know which PP # should I change/modify?
@@lovecraftuni each pp slot is identic. You can customize whichever for the same results

Quick question: are you using any black mist filters? Or is halation straight out of the box?
Thanks man, glad you like it! I use black mist filters, and added red halation in post
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED. THANK YOU!!!!!
I've pinned a comment, use those color settings for each film simulation, they make a huge difference
Beautifuuuuull!!! Are there benefits to doing this in camera? As opposed to just shooting in slog3 and color grading in resolve in post?
Gives a good image out of the camera so there is little or no color grading needed. Giving you a good base to start from, in terms or color and contrast. S-log3 will give you the most flexibility in post, but sometimes you don't have time to color grade, or there is no budget for anything fancy.
Also, not everyone is a colorist, so some people might find S-log3 pretty hard to grade, making it easier to use the Film Simulations
Love this video! Which one would be closest to Cinestill 800t- or do you have a custom?
