That’s the perfect explanation of what Genndy does with his cartoons. He lets the animation tell the story with little dialogue. You can even see it in Samurai Jack
I like how Fang started to understand their partnership when he burned the snake. She realized, since he didn’t eat it, he was doing it FOR HER. He made an effort to do something purely so she’d be more comfortable (after the incident with the snakes in the river shook her up). The beauty of this show - a dinosaur begins to understand empathy for others better because of a snake being thrown in a campfire, no words, only actions.
I really love how they portray their dynamic in the show. Its not "Cave man and pet Dino" It's "Cave Man and Giant Dinosaur try to understand each other." They both get baffled and frustrated when the other one doesn't act the way they expect someone else too at the start, and slowly learn to accommodate and value the other ones quirks. Its a really unique sort of dynamic that does wonders with the wordless format.
What is great about the show is that the violence and gore always feel earned. It's never there simply for shock value, but show the dynamics and motivations of the characters, especially in what, when and how they kill.
Which is also why the massacre of the Ape Men is such a genius choice. You feel satisfaction at first, seeing it as vengeance for Fang, but as the slaughter continues and gets even more gruesome, that feeling begins to wane. At least in my and some other peoples' cases, it went from elation to uncomfortable to borderline horror and disgust. Even after the slaughter, even Spear is shocked by it's aftermath. To even further hammer in the point, it ends on a bitter cliffhanger, with the possibility of Fang's death, meaning that all that death was meaningless. All in all, there isn't quite another show like Primal!
Well we gotta take into consideration the the timeline and the world of this show. But ur right they kill for the sake of eating and or protecting each other. Thats why i never get rick and morty, season one showed rick to have cared for morty and the family somewhat, even doubling down with him turning himself in. But it turned out hes just a nihilistic psycho, and i cant see it more than just that. Here we see a genuine bond between two beings which is why we always find ourselves rooting for them.
It's a violent, bloody, brutal world they live in. And that makes the moments of peace, the scraps of comfort, and the camraderie they find all the more important. Like, yeah the action is entertaining, and cool, but it's entertaining primarily because we want these two to succeed so bad.
These scenes only ever make the show have even more of a loving, kind charge to it. In a place where they have to rely on brutality to live, this brings it back that at the end of the day, they're two beings powering through trauma that are trying to get by. It makes it greatly organic. The most mature stories come through showing the way characters are able to cope and support one another :')
It's surprising on how much of an insanely violent series this show is but demonstrates many heartfelt and soft moments underneath all of the bloodshed and carnage that Spear and Fang have to go through day in and day out merely for survival. Their reliance on each other and their combined strengths truly make them an unstoppable duo and always defend one another in times of crisis. It shows how two different species can be a family regardless of their inability to speak.
I think the message of the story in primal is pretty clear: a caveman and dino learn to survive in a cruel world together, bonded over the tragedy of loss. However, like most good stories, there is a hidden theme that ties all characters and events in a story together, but is never explicitly stated. I believe the theme of Primal is this: "the things worth protecting in life are fragile, but never worthless." Every character we are meant to sympathize with in Primal has lost something, usually a child, and it is always treated as a tragedy. That's a polar opposite message to a few shows on adult swim where life is treated as meaningless and even played off for humor. So the show is gory, but for a good reason.
What I absolutely love about this show is how Genndy truly captures Humanity and their 'pack bond with anything' mentality. By ourselves, we may not be the strongest, even if we are fearsome as hunters (just walking things to death and being absolutely zoinked when it comes to intelligence), but the creatures we keep as allies and friends is really our goal. Just look at dogs, cats, birds, foxes, fish, etc. Hell, some people even bond with rocks?
Foxes and wolves were our most common companions way back, and before anything prehistoric, maybe dinos. Too many people regard animals as lesser beings when we are all just designed/developed differently.
@@carloz1536 People often underestimate just how intelligent animals can be in their own way. They see and smell things on a much more detailed level than we do. Judging them by a human standard isn't really fair.
I'm impressed when he put Fang on the stretcher. She's a bit on the small side for a T-Rex but that's still a three ton animal Spear is hauling around.
She might be an Albertosaurus, which is a type of Tyrannosaurid that is smaller than a T-Rex but still plenty large enough to be just as dangerous as it's more famous cousin.
I love how when they were in that peaceful spot in Rage of the Ape-Men and Fang ate all the fish, Spear wasn't even mad because the fish were just so easy to catch that it wouldn't be too much of a challenge for him to get more to eat
Love how when Fang eats all the fish and Spear looks at her she’s like “Huh where did they go?” 3:35 The invention of the wheel would come in real handy right about now
The strength on this cave man to be able to lift and haul and dinosaur. Not to mention taking the beating they do... The duo is comparable to many modern day superheros. Amazing show
And they showed that it took a hell of a toll on him doing so. It was nice that they didn't just straight go "Yeah Spear is really strong so he just carries her along". He was struggling every step of the way.
@@Jacksaur_ Love is one powerful motivator. Humans of all shapes and sizes do the impossible and the incredibly difficult all the time when they think they have to. Men and women have been reported as lifting up 3 ton cars (Not entirely off the ground, but being able to hold them up at all is amazing) just to rescue people. It's called 'Hysterical Strength', and seeing as Spear as a neanderthal he probably would've been far stronger than any of these examples, but if we're going by that logic he wouldn't have been able to endure doing that for very long. Either way, lovely piece of media.
I like that in River of Snakes, there still was heavy trust issues lingering, but due to what happened I don't see why not. They didn't really connect to me until Rage of the Ape Men. (Before the primates came) They solely looked at each other in that moment like, you're kind of like me, we're not so different after all. It was a eye to eye moment that doesn't say hey you're a pet to me, I hunt you do whatever. This was I got your back at all costs bonding.
This really shows their bond. Yes they may get pissy at each other and yes they get upset but at the end of the day both spear and [somewhat] fang know they have each other's back.
Its always good to have sweet and tender moments like these in a show filled with so much violence and gore, that way it hits MUCH harder when the show inevitably punches you in the gut
Probably THE best part of the entire series, the developing relationship between Spear and Fang. It's enormously helped out by the fact that neither Spear NOR Fang are just stereotypical cavemany and dinosaur. Spear is VERY smart, adaptable, inventive and an absolute fighting machine when he wants to be. And yet, he's as tender a father as any human could ask for. He watched over Fang as she laid her clutch and congratulated her in his own way (even if it nonplussed Fang). He would absolutely fight to the death to protect her. When Fang appeared to be dead, he mourned her exactly as he mourned his own family. when she turned out to have survived, he dragged a freaking **10,000 pound T. rex** on a sledge with no wheels just to get her to a defensible shelter! That's real love. Fang is also very, VERY smart - nearly as smart as Spear. She can make abstract leaps to solve problems, has self-awareness and a basic understanding of her world. She also can fight like a demon and tear though just about any opponent with the ease of a giant carnosaur. But she's *anything* but a dumb brute. Here, you see she *also* has a tender side. When she decides Spear is family, there is very little she'll do not for him. She even imitates gestures like the handprint in the sand, and genuinely tries to understand Spear, as far as her presapient mind can stretch. And once they learned to trust each other, they worked together as a nearly perfect team. That is the only way they survive the horrific opponents the show throws at them.
Spear reminds me heavily of Drago Bludvist from the second movie. He's basically if Drago took his loss about losing his village and family to dragons in a more positive way. Or basically if they just kept the whole arc they had planned for him in the third movie where he was supposed to get washed up on an island home to a single dragon where it was his only way of getting off the island so he had to figure out how to earn its respect and ended up developing a bond with it. Just minus all the blood and gore.
Another great moment was when after spear makes a fire for the camp he leans against fang to go to sleep, and in turn she wraps her tail around him possessively
This video shows that there is still humor and kindness in an otherwise brutal world. When the gore flies, it's not just mindless. It's done for survival. Every move made is with purpose. I watched a few of the episodes from the new season and I have two words: drunk Fang!
As a person who hasn’t watched the show yet but has seen clips and stuff, ya boi spear has ungodly strength. Like dayum, a while Rex, and the wood was strong as hell too
