  • On March 21st, the US Department of Justice sued Apple for antitrust violations. Claiming that Apple has an illegal monopoly on the smartphone market with iPhone. So what exactly is Apple doing wrong? Well, the DOJ has provided five reasons. First, is preventing “super apps” from ever existing on iPhone.

      Microsoft only got sued once they already became a monopoly. At that point it was too late. The world was too reliant on Windows. Apple outsells Android in America but even still it’s only 60:40. However, that will definitely change. 87% of teens have an iPhone, and Apple purposely makes it hard to switch, meaning in 10-15 years time they definitely will have an even bigger monopoly. It’s good that something’s being done about it now. Even if you’re an Apple fan, them being forced to adopt more open standards and thus facing more competition makes thing better for everyone as it forces them to do even better to earn your sale rather than relying on trapping you in a walled garden you can’t leave.
      Side note, seems everyone wants iMessage to be fixed, I feel like I’m the only one who cares more about Quick Share and AirDrop being compatible with each other lmao

And, I'm willing to bet that the only reason it doesn't work on the iPhone is the exact same reason Samsung eventually dropped iOS support on their watches, Apple's closed ecosystem meant that they just couldn't make the experience universal.

    I immediately knew how bad it was when I was in high school. I remember a girl dropped her android phone and the phone split, with battery popping out. A group of freshman students were walking by when it happened, and I remember one of them looking down at the girl scrambling to pick up the pieces of her phone, and he yells, "F*cking android!"
    I felt so bad for the poor girl. Coming from a low income household, an Apple product was just something we never could afford, so I heavily sympathized for the girl. You can probably guess how pissed I was at those kids.

    I don't think I'm for government intervention in areas like this. Yes I think it would be nice for Apple to make things easier and more accessible for the other side but don't think they should be forced by the government to make these convenient but not necessary features. If companies want to create exclusive products I don't think that they should be stopped. If you don't like it you don't have to use it. A company should be able to choose what to do with their products (on legal guidelines of course). Why does Netflix subscription have to be so exclusive? Why shouldn't the government just force Netflix and other companies to make a subscription that works for all streaming platforms?

    • @manaylodha
      @manaylodha Месяц назад

      Because Netflix is not actively stopping you from using other streaming platforms, for example AirPods and Apple Watch do not work with android, ie Apple Watch doesn’t work outright as for AirPods they won’t update and have to be taken to the Apple Store. There are lot more anti competitive things apple is doing than just this, for example not allowing side loading by USER choice. 30% cut is too harsh on devs moreover you are FORCED to use the App Store and not allowed to use any store you would like, and apple bullies companies in the App Store for example Spotify had to face a ton of issues, floatplane’s app (LTT’s company) were not allowed to direct people to use their website to sign up even though Netflix had the same feature and apple outright said to them that Netflix was big so they were allowed but floatplane can’t. I love apple for a lot of things they do but they are being dicks in a lot of ways they don’t have to be.

    I don't understand why it's bad that Apple is unique and also a closed system... It is good because your devices are much safer from outside viruses than others. The other problem is that they're not going to make Android or other devices better, they're going to make Apple worse. I don't think that's essential. There's also talk of Apple pushing out other manufacturers, but please, Apple has been working on their whole system for years, decades to be able to do that. I also thought forcing Apple to switch from Lightning connector was a bit unnecessary, obviously it's easier to use USB-C, but what's wrong with wanting to be special?

    • @DeerJerky
      @DeerJerky Месяц назад +5

      How is it going to make Apple worse?
      The ecosystem is good, but it's locked to Apple devices. The lawsuit is to ALLOW you to go beyond Apple while staying in the ecosystem. This does not compromise security whatsoever if you don't change your habit (e.g. if you don't install WeChat, nothing changes for you.).
      As for the connector, Apple wasn't being "special," it was being proprietary and outdated. It relied on the USB 2.0 spec from the year 2000, and there was absolutely no reason for them to not update the connector since they first used it. Above that, you simply just couldn't reuse the connector anywhere else, or reuse the industry standard USB-C connector on the iPhone. It created a lot of e-waste, so the EU forced Apple to change it.
      As someone who's on Android, the point about SMS/MMS would hugely benefit me and every iPhone user I communicate with. There's no downside to using RCS with non-iMessage devices, since I could now text you guys normal quality photos and videos and vice versa.

      Yeah, it's true, if I don't change my habits it's not really going to change for me, you get the point.
      I think they could have got a lot more out of the Lightning port if they had paid a bit more attention to it, but USB-C isn't much better, it's still slow and has issues, but that's mostly Apple's fault. "It created a lot of e-waste" which is so shitty (in my opinion), lots of things create a lot more e-waste and they don't really care about that, so okay I understand why it's better to have usb-c, but then don't just support it by saying there's a lot of e-waste.
      The SMS/MMS changes are really needed because it's so shitty to talk to people using Android and it's not fair.
      I guess it was just a bit of a stupid moment from me, because if I don't change the way I use it, it's not really going to change for me.
      I think there are a lot of problems with Apple, but it's still the best for me, but that's why I understand people using Android.

      I will say that the e-waste point definitely could've been a lot worse, the ruling was already a little silly in the way that it ironically made all existing lightning cables e-waste. I do agree with you there. Now that I think about it, we really rely on wireless a lot more than wired, so there's not much point in having fast USB speeds when we have Nearby Share/AirDrop and WiFi, it'd explain why nobody really focuses on having the fastest wired connection speed.
      I'm honestly just excited to finally have cross platform RCS & not care which phone I have, since for some reason I always feel like I ruin group chats just by being in them w/o iMessage :/
      All in all, I really like iPhones, Pixels, Samsung S-series, etc. I honestly think the "Apple v android" is pointless because they both are really cool. Honestly the DOJ v Apple Inc. has no sense at all, since Apple is promoting their own products and exosystem, which is fair. The problem is that Google is the real comoany having a monopoly over the phone business as every phone maker depends on Android OS and by forcing Apple to accept Google’s demands, it only makes Android even more powerful, and lets not even mention Google using the philosophy “Quantity over Quality” ehile Apple is indeed working for the best of customers in terms of security and service. In simple words, the DoJ wants to lower the standard of Apple by forcing them to adopt measures that will affect Apple and will give more power to Google. Is as simple as that.

      Bro this argument makes no sense RCS is close to what Apple is using and Apple Arcade doesn't even compare to other companies. Yes some of the point they made are valid, nobody outside Asia uses or wants super apps even on android and also most people buy smart watches matching the company as well as most WearOS devices having a similarly bad/limited experience on IOS as well (which I think a good portion is Google's doing). But to act like Apple's walled garden is done all the time for the highest quality instead of complete control is realms that do not need that level of control is foolish, you might as well say that having lightning is better than USB C and all iPads and iPhones need to switch back instead of moving to something more expansive and allows for more interoperability and capability between users of all devices.

      Android is open source. Unless Google takes down the project anyone can use it for free without licensing fees or any connection to google at all. The lawsuit, if won, would make smartphones a better experience for android and apple users. What is the downside here, apple's stock price goes down? Apple is a trillion dollar corporation, not your friend.

      Most of people who hate Apple are developers because of their restrictions and higher prices on the developer's side. For example, if you want to develop apps for IOS you need an Apple developer account membership that you will pay $99 annually if i'm correct. Also if you develop an app that charges users, then Apple will take 30% of every purchase made on your app regardless of the developer's company/startup size. Also Apple has full control on user's device where the only place you can get apps is on Apple's app store, with that they can decide to remove other competitive apps from their store so that they can develop their own apps with no pressure. Also recently on their VisionOS platform they banned some developer's app that if I remember correctly it can be an alternative to home screen of VisionOS so that only them they can make it for their devices, after that those developers decided to open source their app on GitHub after being banned. All of these makes Apple keeps killing their competitors and also killing innovations over Apple's ecosystem, that's why IOS has lack some cool apps and features because only Apple have full control over their devices than any other developers.

    Users buy Apple products for the closed ecosystem. There's a product design language, marketing, consistency, etc... Forcing Apple to make all of these changes will not impact buying decisions of those already invested in and who prefer Apple products, however it may open the platform enough to entice a few Android users to make the switch knowing they won't be so locked in.... Alternative app stores on mobile is a joke. Android has had them as an option for 10+ years and over 95% of apps installed on Android devices originate from the official Google Play Store... The DOJ is wasting our tax money, bending to lobbyist who are ignorant about the request they are making.

    The DOJ appears to be misinterpreting Apple's 'ecosystem' as a sign of a 'monopoly.' In reality, Apple's comprehensive control, from chip design to consumer products, is a rare feat in the tech industry. This integrated structure is the very foundation of the Apple ecosystem, delivering significant benefits to customers. Apps and hardware interact seamlessly, updates flow effortlessly - it's the reason behind the 'it just works' experience that consumers value.I have both Apple and Android devices including Apple Watch, and I don't want to connect my watch to my Android phone, it will ruining my smooth user experience.

      Do others support mini-apps (apps within apps)? Regardless, fail to see it limiting the user experience in any way. Meanwhile the brilliant tight integration does not preclude APIs to give users/developers some options, like Apple wallet lockdown seems self-serving (of Apple’s profits, not UX).
