Yamaha has been the king of horsepower in the 250 class over the past few years, but Kawasaki had some things to say about that with the release of the 2020 KX250. Some updates to the KX include a higher-output engine by way of more aggressive cams and revised valve train, more powerful brakes, and a brand new coil-spring 48mm KYB fork. So, Chase teams up with #526 Colton Aeck at Glen Helen Raceway to put the new changes to the test and see what bike come out on top for 2020!

Who's had the chance to ride a new 2020 250? Which bike would you go with?
Rocky Mountain ATV MC Yamaha for sure. You guys are awesome!!!
Yamaha, that’s a no brainer
I haven't ridden any but I think Yamaha
KTM, mate bought one, awesome bike !
Blue or Red.
Ride Red, bleed Red 🤘🏻
If your a weekend warrior just choose your favourite colour 👍🤙
Agreed, but If you are a weekend warrior I would say get the Yamaha for the E start. More time riding and less time getting tired kicking.
If you’re a weekend warrior save the money get a older bike for cheap and with minor issues and fix it up and build yourself a good bike
Well I guess I won’t get my favorite color orange those are shit
Bill bye The Russian spy ktm arent shit also u can get different colored plastics for different bikes plus graphics
@@ryker1725 False.
Kawasaki is a real bastard for dropping the F from the model name. I was really excited to see a 2 stroke.
Clickbait title.
I would be the first one at my local dealer to buy the 250 if it was a 2 stroke I'm still riding my 07 wishing for a new one .
When Kawasaki announced the new KX 250 and then seen they just removed the F yeah I was waaaay disappointed, no matter how you name it it will never be as cool and wild as a two stroke!!!
ComanderCoconut - "Exactly" same here..

I went with the new 2020 KX250 for many of the reasons you both mentioned. I've only ever owned/raced a kick start bike, so I don't mind... the EFI on these new bikes do make them easier to start. Brand new, the KX started on the first/second kick. Also, the KX right now is a better deal for the pocket book, which could be used to get some aftermarket stuff, to further it's justification. Honestly, I've been a Honda guy my whole life, but I would be happy to have any of the new bikes... they are all awesome. Thank you.
Thank you for the detailed explanation on each bike's handling characteristics, most 250F shootouts barely touch the subject and put most of the emphasis on engine power. With a pro and and intermediate on hand, also adding a novice level rider's opinion would complete such a review very well.
Thanks, Michel. Glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful. A novice rider would be great but it get's pretty tough with three guys trying to ride two bikes all day haha. But definitely food for thought for our next VS. Thanks for watching! - Chase
I went with Yamaha because of the easy power, reliable easy suspension, wifi for tuning but more so maintenance, easiest to clean/replace air filter I've ever dealt with it been a very easy bike to live with.
How's the battery is it reliable ?
@Baba Cora Sene
Yes. Of course it is.
I think the kx 250f should include both a kickstart and an electric start, people also use these bikes on trails. If the electric start stops working without a kick start they would be stranded unless they can manage to bump start it.
Addicted you’re not getting the point. People do use mx bikes for trail bikes, only having electric start is a bad idea, and I know that the 2020 kx 250f still has a kickstart, I think that’s a good thing
They made both. They made bikes with electric start and with kick
Cant bump start a fuel injected bike 😆 its either on or off
Gilbert Pedraza sorry, all I mean is electric start can get you stranded
@@gilbertpedraza6756 you can
The all green KX😍
Great feedback!
I’m going with the Yamaha based on it’s proven reliability and performance. When Kawasaki has their new bike dialed in for a few years I could possibly change my mind.
Kawasaki has a proven reliability and power for years if they didn’t top pros wouldn’t race them but everyone has there different opinions I am a Kawasaki fan lol and own a husky lol
🤣 clearly you're a rookie rider
@@moto_tech_braap_itout9852 Your the Rookie for riding a 4 stroke🤣
Thanks for the video, I’ll be bumped up to the 250f class soon
Motocross Mx just got a 2015 kx250f
@@mbvjg4217 How is it? I'm buying one next month aswell, the 2015 one
@@ppsh2294 its a pretty sick bike you’ll love it, unfortunately my bike has had a few problems because the people who owned it before me had no clue how to work on bikes so it was poorly maintained, but i mean the bike is sick as hell!
@@mbvjg4217 That's awesome man.. I always loved Kawasaki dirtbikes.. The price ill pay is 3700€.. so a pretty good deal imo
@@ppsh2294 damn thats quiet a bit over here, they go for around $3500-4000 which is around 2500-3000 over there i think
ig it also depends on how clean the bike is and how much it’s worth over there too
Nice review guys, yep that elec start is very nice, especially when you get stuck on a hill, just saying motor on.
What are all these comments about on hills!??? You hold the front brake and kick! Any steeper than that you are already going down the hill!
I like this versus videos they’re in depth
Thanks, Michael! They're really fun to shoot and it's crazy how different two bikes can feel when you ride them back to back. Thanks For watching - Chase
great review and i respect both advices ,though let it be remembered ,real man kicks starts his mule. Thats why riding gives you more memories..Quakasaki for me
It’s almost like they’re two name brand company’s with minor differences that don’t effect performance and the better bike is more on personal preference
True. Both are very good bikes. - Chase
A lot of people have a brand, though. I know personally, I prefer Kawasaki just because it’s all I’ve owned and they’ve never let me down. I do love all Japanese “big 4” bikes though.
Got the 2020 Kx it’s a great machine!
Would like to dance with the Yamaha too💚🏁💙
Cheers
now that you have had it awhile any complaints or problems?
Any problems as of 2021?
Bought it a month ago (2020 model from an old man, he barely rode on it) Lovely bike but really fast though! Got arm pump from deep holes in the ground (typical dutch track🤣) The power is great but she has a temper for sure lol
Kick starter: I sleep
Electric start: real shit
Both?: STONKS
personally for begginers/ intermediats should go for the yammaha because its more comterable and probably good for practicing on but when you get better you should go for the kawasaki and I would go for kawasaki just because they are a beast
I personally like the kickstarter more bcs when u kick it and give it a bit of throttle it just sound so aggressive and awsome and when you electric start it's just like a normal start
Sou fã da Yamaha, acompanho muito os videos da marca,aí nos Estados Unidos a Yamaha é vista como uma boa moto??,é um time grande??,parabéns pelo vídeo..... gooo Yamaha 💙💙💙
Go green just got mine going to shred tomorrow
Bleedin green is the way to go
I 100% relate on the kickstarter comments. I ride in the woods, if you stall in a bad situation, its really nice to just hit the button and have it start. I rode a drz for a while and now i'm on a gasgas kicker, and it's kind of shitty that i don't have the e start, but in general i get more places because the bike is better.
I just bought both of them. The only thing that I wish The Kawasaki had was an electric start but it starts on the 3rd or 4th kick.
Wow your rich stop bragging about it
@@superior2k-_-879 I'm not rich. Worked hard to save up to buy them. Stop being a jealous punk and go work for what you want.
Dennis Skipworth I’m 14 dumb nigga what you expect me to do you are lowkey bragging about
I agree to both of you guys..i ride the Kawasaki and the Yamaha 250s though it's not the 2020 models, but for my experience i feel the same from what you are saying kawi more aggressive bike in cornering and yamaha is more comfortable bike..depends on what the rider prefers ..
For me i like the yamaha for my riding style,i got more arm pump from kawi but it's stil nice bike to ride for racing..
Rhick Margatinez thanks for sharing! Both are great bikes and each have their strengths.
I'd go blue, im a beginner/intermediate...my son has a 2018 YZ65 and have never rode a bike that good !! Yamaha is my pick unless I could get a electric bike !
Go Yamaha!
I had one like Jason Lawrence's
yz 125, 2t of course!!!
and it was my favorite bike ever!
*I LOVE KAWASAKI ...I LOVE TEAM GREEN , 3 TIMES IN A ROW THE USA MOTOCROSS CHAMPION*
didik ajja18 YESSSSS
I love kicking bikes just bc of the noice and satisfying kick when it starts first go
I have a 2017 kx100 and I’m a big Kawasaki fan I’m a huge Eli and cianciarulo and Austin forkner fan so go team green
I agree
I think I kinda have the same maybe a model behind the Kawasaki I only started in may
If the engine package is so similar I'd pick the yz250f just because of the raw sound it produces. That bike just sounds so mean
That makes no sense. All four strokes sound the same.
They should do a retro look big white block letters K X as my early bikes had. 79, 80, 82 KX 250 air cooled two strokes.
Bel - Ray MC 1.
I absolutely love the look of the Kawasaki and absolutely NEED max control and maneuverability on the track due to my style and technique as that’s where my comfortability takes precedence. However, the kickstart and lack of wifi tuning kills it for me. I’m almost 30 and have had ankle surgery as well as damage from my knees down from the military and a kickstart would be an unnecessary amount of added stress, especially if I tip it over on the track and have to heel it for 5 minutes. Unless the kickstarters are more forgiving than they were 13 years ago, I’m not sure I could cope. But god do I love the way that kawi looks.
It’s an easy kick. Just feel the compression and it should run first try. Its a great bike, had my first ride with the kx250f 2020 last week and gotta say she has a temper : p
@@DonGH97 yeah I had a 2018 kx250 and it always started in 1-2 easy kicks and now I got a 2020 and it's the same
I'm going wiv the kx cos I got a green helmet from when I had a pit bike before
I love green bikes....
Me too....👍👍👍
So do I but I feel like Yamaha is slightly better then the Kawasaki so idk which to get
If you know who Eli Tomac is then you know Kawasaki is good so in other words it’s an easy choice 🟩
This is so fun and cool
i would want to see a shoot out between the kawasaki 250 and the new honda 250.
Bleeding green 🤘🤘
With the stiffer set up of the kwaka, how does it fair after a day of racing compared to the yam? Like do you find yourself more tired because of it or does it actually make it easier after a while? Also the motocross bikes I grew up with, it wasn’t uncommon bolts rattling loose 😂😂 have these been tested extensively enough to encounter anything of the sort ? Thanks
Kx is way cheaper new. I can get it for about 6400 out the door. It's still a great bike. I love Yamaha but I'll kick start for savings like that.
Theyre like $5500 down in San Diego. Lot of money saved if you're willing to kick
drewmorg But then licensing set up fees regestrations and dealer fees and taxes out the door that’s 7200 just got mine
@@jacknovak1551 DAYUM! ok, im staying used 2008 YZ250F then for like $3000
drewmorg They trick u into buying them with”dealer incentives” and then rack up the so called hidden fees but they are really good bike though
They’re about $5500 out of the doors in Hillsboro oregon. I think it’s fine if it doesn’t have electric start if I’m saving that much
I want the Kawasaki but I might wait for the 2021 in hopes that they put an electric starter on it
They have electric start now and hydraulic clutch now is your time
nice 2019 yamaha lol
The Yamaha doesn’t have kick start backup, so I wouldn’t pick for that reason.
Do own an 07 WR450 with both electric & kick start.
well the Pro Circuit bikes have 55+hp, but only last maybe 5 hours before rebuild. dont ask me where i got info, but i know someone who works there. alot has to do with their special transmission and ratios, plus not much rpm drop between gears. probably a titanium rod, ceramic engine bearings, MotoGP stuff. Wish the KX had electric start and lighter crank and shorter rod for better lowend
Everyone has an opinion but all the Riders I've talked to on the tracks prefer the Yamaha by far it is a stronger bike all around better bike I know Kawasaki is a great bike as well.
and what what suppression is better
I ride a kx 65 and i love it thats why i ride it
Canobolas MCC YEP
My boy has a 09 monster edition
KX65, and it is one Bad Ass little machine!
Not a real kx.
Bad trick removing the f.
We want s real kx. 2t!
Ryan Lewis 2 strokes are badass, but 4 strokes are also suuupppeerrr nice. i own a 2019 kx 250 and it’s a beaut. i’d still consider the 250 four a real kawi ;)
Ryan Lewis when I clicked on the video I thought it was a 250 2 stroke. But nope. 😢
Not a true kx.. Rightly said 😭😭😭
Do yz125X2020!
Which one is better on a a sand track?
How come Kawi took the skid plate off the 2020. Are the holes there in the frame still to buy one for it ? I loved how flush to the frame the stock plate was on my 18
I'm not really sure why they did. I didn't check but I would imagine the holes are still there. - Chase
Good job guys. Nice video. Always good to have a pro and a non pro perspective. So, kick start isn’t a big deal (of course electric start is a plus, but we are spoiled) I ride a RMZ250 and it starts easy. However, if I was racing it could make the difference. I like both bikes, and I know they both are fast, but I would choose the YZ250F just because it looks better and more refined. Just my opinion.
Right on. They both really are good bikes and have their strong points. You could give me either one and I'd be stoked. But at the end of the day, you have to pick just one haha. Appreciate you watching and glad you like the vids. Have fun out there! - Chase
Remover when the kx 250 was a 2 stroke beast
I Love Yamaha,the best bikes mx,💙💙💙💙💙💙Blue time
I'm hoping the 2021 kx250f will be estart! If kawi follows there own pattern the 2021 should be like the 2020 kx450.
Let's hope 🙏🙏
I dont understand why everyone wants to get rid of kick start.
Same I love kick starts
Needed the crf to compare in this video as well, still gd vid
Beau Moore crfs aren’t much of a race bike as these 2. More for like back yard riding and stuff like that.
@@nate.hanlon LMAO. Where did you come up with this theory?
Dewey B everyone knows tho. Honda’s can’t keep up with the performance of either kawi or Yamaha
How much has the YZ250 platform changed over the last 10 years? Isn't it very nearly the same bike?
Should do yam vs Honda
whens the pit bike shootout?
yo is this the track from that movie
Nice bikes but I take my cr any day and yes a two stroke.
what song that played in background ?
Kawi looks sharp. Too bad it doesn't have an electric start
sao duas que eu nao consigo decidir qual eu pego
I love the Kawasaki but I am a Yamaha man and I been one for many years I will still stick to my Yamahas if the Kawasaki had more bottom end power and if it had a elec start than that would be a diffent story it would be very hard to pick I can tell you that much
Just wait til next year when it gets the hydraulic clutch, E-start, and other updates the 450 got...The Yamaha will be in trouble! - Chase
im a kawasaki fan, but i also like the yamaha bikes
The kx250 is a race bike my dad has it its nice
and the kx seat level is 1 inch lower than the yz
My problem with the Yamaha is that the shrouds are too wide and its heavy. And with the kawasaki is that it's still kick start.
The Yamaha is wider, but honestly, it's not a deal breaker. I notice the extra width when I first get on but forget about it pretty quick. They're both really good bikes with great suspension and great motors. - Chase
I have a 2020 KX250F
How do you like it?
Kick starts are a problem? Lol mine fell off and I’ve been roll starting my bike for the past six months
Haha that’s awesome
Kick start is not a problem you have weak legs it's takes a real man to start a bike wimps have problems starting the bike let's get that shit straight.
By a new one duh
3hree 6ix it’s 170 bucks bud
@@brettorton2363 it should not take u long to save up 170
Which of the 2 would you go for as a beginner??
As a beginner? Do you have any riding experience? - Chase
I raced smokers back in the day ( late 90s early 2000s ) but now as a 40 year old and not having ridden properly for a few years (about 15) I would consider myself more or a vet that wants an easier ride. I don’t want to be wrestling something around the track!!
What’s the top speed on the Yamaha?
All the 250's by design, with stock gearing will max out near 70mph.
I want to get back into riding. I used to have a Yamaha yz250 2 stroke. I’m a pretty novice rider. Do y’all recommend a 125 2 stroke or a 250 4 stroke?
What kind of riding do you think you'll be doing most? Both options will be great for getting back into riding but as you know with your YZ250, the cost of maintenance on a 125 will be less than a 4 stroke but you'll have to ride a 125 pretty hard to get the power out of it. Where with a 250 4-stroke it's more forgiving for a novice because you'll have more consistent power throughout the rev range.
@@rmatvmc what about weight wise? im in the same boat, ive ridden and raced growing up, sold my last bike due to kids and now my kids are riding and i want to start riding again with them, should i go 250f or 450? 230pds weekend warrior... thanks for the awesome reviews!
I don't know how Kawasaki could change every part on the motor and suspension and keep the same handle bar that has always been too tall. The bike is incredible with a lower bar in the front mounts.
Yeah, it's not the best bend and the grips are terrible!
Works good for Tomac and AC. They both run that bend on their Kawis
Yep you are correct sir! Tomac runs a 604 Fatbar and Adam a 997 twinwall. Both bars are nearly identical to the stock 971 7/8 bar bend. The 604 is actually taller!
Bar bend should be your choice, im 6’2” got my cr125 from a 5’8” guy and he had cr tall bend on it. Felt stupid like a chopper because the bike already feels tall in the front. Put 996 on and it made a big difference one of the most comfortable bikes Ive owned now. Owned a 2014 kx 250 it was really confidence inspiring rode my cousins 2014 yz250f it was good aswell but he wont let me ride it anymore said I might blow it up lol. Biggest difference to me is 250 vs 450 I get arm pump so fast with 450 vs a 250
@@drakeszoke7121 mate the 450 arm pump is real. Never had an issue my whole life riding 300 2 strokes and 450's now I've just turned 30 and after 2 laps my forearms are shot. Definitely switching to a 250f now just don't know which one of these 2 haha
what dirt bike 2017 yz250f or kx250f
2017 KX or 2020 KX?
would 93 octane pump gas be enough for the 14.2:1 compression ratio of the kx250? im not a racer and dont care about maximum performance. i just wouldnt wanna harm the engine if its gonna preignite the air/fuel mix
You would be fine. I only run 91 but that's the highest we get here in Utah. - Chase
I bleed green but i'd like to get the yz the only thing is that i don't know if the battery is reliable because i can stay a while without riding and i've never own a bike that doesn't have a kickstart
I haven't heard of anyone having issues with the yamaha batteries. But if you're worried, I would just get a battery tender and hook it up if the bike is going to be sitting for a long period of time.
Terry from Christchurch New Zealand, i got a 19 yz2500f did 31hrs then blew my tibia and fibia above me ankle. Bike was parked up feb through to sep and fresh gas hit the button and cranked up sweet battery was fine, i was surprised and impressed, Yamaha suspension is so good stock and if ua can outride it your eather delusional, fat or very fast. Most people that complan about suspension are eather wrong spring rate, dont understand how setup and clickes work and effects. Or there body positions on the bike is incorrect. Never have i not been able to get someone set up comfortable and predictable so they can charge on yammi. suspension
I think in 2014, 2016 and 2017 the kx250f had more horsepower than the yz250f. But the last couple of years like they said yamaha had the better motor because of all the bottom and mid power it has.
I want the Kawasaki
I wanted so bad
be cause I'm debating to get a yz250f or a kx250f I don't no wh was better in the year I like the kx because its narrowest and the seating is lower than the yz its one inch lower but the yz has Moore hp and lb ft so ya. please help me
The KX feels a little more nimble and easier to flick around, the engines are very comparable, and suspension is really good on both. The KX has stiffer stock settings though. Like in the video, I liked the Yamaha for the comfort and chassis feel. It's still a good cornering bike and the power is awesome. - Chase
Basicly 2 stroke vs 4 stroke with diffrent brands ok ill go with the kawasaki
Mantap bos 👍
hey is the 2017 kx250f the same Engine package as the 2019 kx250f love your videos

@Rocky Mountain ATV MC, Are you sure this is YZ 250F 2020 ? I think it's 2019 isn't it? Correct me if I'm wrong
Yes, it is a 2019. In the intro I mention that and explain that the bike was unchanged from 19-20 except for graphics. - Chase

Guys I hope to get your opinion on this... I want the best small bike that I can fit in the back of a small car - like a ford fiesta size with the back seats down. Am I looking at 85cc 2 strokes if loading by myself for less weight? Husky tc 85, yamaha yz85 or anything else??
What are your thoughts for under 180 lb bikes and still decent power. Im 5"7, 150lbs.
Thanks, watching from the UK, great video and logical explanations as to your choices here. Thumbs up.
A kx100 is a nice middle of the ground bike that would be small. Dont know if it would fit in the back of a ford fiesta though. Also being small doesnt really matter a whole lot im 5'6 130lbs and ride a kx250f lol
@@blu3flare25 im looking at that and the rest of the manufacturer 85cc's. Key is I have to be able to whack in the back of the boot.
Thanks for the response. I don't think there are a lot of kx100's in the UK let alone for sale.
All depends on seat height, handlebar width, total height and weight of the bike....

@@shifty277 I would definatly try to find a kx100. But if you go with a 85 you can always get a big bore kit. Most important thing after that would be tuning the suspension for you're weigh.
@@shifty277 biggest reason for the kx100 is the extra power bigger wheels and the stock suspension should be more in the ballpark for you're weight.
